all [Applause] is [Music] in [Music] me lord we would be [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] changed [Music] the [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit peace be with you dear parishioners of john paul the second parish i am delighted to be with you for this mass uh i have come because october as you know is the the date of where we remember john paul ii his first day in the liturgical calendar and i had to anticipate because of conflict to come today as i could not come on that date but truly delighted to be with father richard pagano your pastor and all of you in celebrating this mass today you will notice from the readings that we will be listening to the from the altar of the world the theme of marriage uh marriage for us catholics is a sacrament it's a sacred union it is part of god's plan and so both the first reading and the gospel will be related to jesus teaching on marriage which is the foundation of a family and society is healthy when the families are strong and together so that theme will be all along the liturgy of the world today let us ask the lord to forgive us i confess unto you my brothers and sisters that i have heard their sins in my voice in my words and what i have done in what i have heard to do my fault through my fault through my refrigerator therefore i have everybody repeating all the angels and saints you have brothers and sisters may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and lead us to everlasting life [Music] election [Music] a [Music] these two people love you [Music] we're [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] you take aways [Music] have mercy on us [Music] jesus christ [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray almighty ever living god who in the abundance of your kindness surpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads and to give what prayer does not dare to ask through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever a reading from the book of genesis the lord god said it is not good for the man to be alone i will make a suitable partner for him so the lord god formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them whatever the man called each of them would be its name the man gave names to all the cattle all the birds of the air and all wild animals but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man so the lord god cast a deep sleep on the man and while he was asleep he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh the lord god then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man when he brought her to the man the man said this one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh this one shall be called woman for out of her man this one has been taken that is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and the two of them become one flesh the word of the lord [Music] all the days bless us [Music] shall you be unfavored maybe [Music] [Applause] your children like other places [Music] may the lord [Music] the lord bless you from may you see the prosperity of jesus [Music] may you see your children's children peace [Music] a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters he for a little while was made lower than the angels that by the grace of god he might taste death for everyone for it was fitting that he for whom and through whom all things exist in bringing many children to glory should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering he who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin therefore he is not ashamed to call them brothers the word of the lord holy gospel [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] if we love one another god remains in us and his love is [Music] [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you oh lord the pharisees approached jesus and asked is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife they were testing him he said to them in reply what did moses command you they replied moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her but jesus told them because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment but from the beginning of creation god made them male and female for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh so they are no longer two but one flesh therefore what god has joined together no human being must separate in the house the disciples again questioned jesus about this he said to them whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her and if she divorces her husband and marries another she commits adultery the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ [Music] [Music] dear brothers and sisters of marriage which is the reciprocal love of husband and wife has its origins in god's plan that's what the readings are saying to us this comes from god's intentionality that's why uh the first reader came to the book of genesis as you know the book of genesis which father of which uh uh pope francis pope john paul ii gave so much attention to it that book of genesis is the the mind of the creator and the creator plan for humanity as a whole whereas animals if you come back to that first reading where animals as beautiful as they are and they are by the way and we love them and protect them they were made from the ground but the woman is made from the very self of the male just to say the intimacy of male and female only the human is made in the image of god in the image and likeness of god and that's the foundation the theological foundation of our dignity each one of us is made in the image and likeness of god if you follow the teachings of the church regarding the unborn it's because of that that the unborn has that dignity as a human being and today you will see many change in in the different parishes of our diocese is to to proclaim to the world because the world is not there yet society is not there yet but the catholic community the christians are saying we need to protect the child in the womb and we need to protect the mother of that child and assist her all the way that's why there is such an affinity of man and the woman fostering a supportive and nurturing relationship you and i know that there is domestic violence regretfully you and i know that there are um fights and regretfully that intention of the creator is not always successful in fact just five minutes before the mass father richard and i were talking about a situation on that so this is the idea you and i know that reality day by day is not exactly like the ideal but we are aiming toward god's intentionality over marriage and family life even the language if you go to the in that first reading that we heard uh even the language um kind of uh the hebrew the because you know that the text of genesis is in hebrew those of you who are hebrew scholars in this assembly if there is any you know that it is ish ish is man isha is woman so like to say look at the connectivity of male and female that even the language conveys that connectivity that intimacy yes this one as the we heard from the scripture today yes this one at last is born of my bones and flesh of my flesh this is adam talking about eve some of you who come from a scientific background some of you who are young adults and teens say well we heard that from the genesis but did that really happen that way well it is not about happening that way because as pious the twelve told us we need to interpret the bible according to literary charms to the way in which the writer is intending and this is poetry the literary genre is poetry so in poetry what we need to is not to say the symbolic is physical but we need to see what is the meaning what is the meaning and the meaning is is that union of male and female that intentionality of god that this is a sacred union and the intentionality of god that that's how humanity is to grow no at random but in a context of a marriage of permanence and fecundity which jesus christ has made a sacrament a kind of a reflection of the unity of christ on the church as saint paul explained it in the ephesians so god's mandate is that that's the way of humanity to grow and the flesh of my flesh and the flesh of my flesh is the child the baby so that's why we are so protective of the unborn that's why we are so protective of children with safe environment policies uh to protect the the vulnerable to protect the child in his infancy and adolescence because the fla the child is the flesh of the flesh i always one hobby of mine one little practice of mine is that when i see a child i look at the face of a father i look at the face of the mother and there is always a unique resemblance of both of them one will look a little bit more like the father the other one will look a little bit more like the mother but in in all of them both are reflected both physically psychologically i mean in terms of temperament in terms is is really flesh of my flesh the scripture in a poetic way as such a very very real reality and that is why a child should never be seen as a problem even if the birth of a child you know it creates a lot of challenges for parents many many and that's why a child even if he's sick he or she is sick even she or she is handicapped or has limitation is welcome and we have heroic parents parents that i admire to the end that welcome that child even if they know that they will have to be caring for that child in an excessive way but they welcome the child it comes from god is a gift a child is always a gift regardless in a question if we move to the gospel today that father richard proclaimed for us in this gospel uh it is a the context of this gospel is the q and i the the the the authorities of the time were always challenging jesus and jesus had a very wise way of of responding i mean you could see jesus was shrewd very shrewd and he would never his answers really outdo the questioners and today is one of those instances when they questioned him how about your interpretation of marriage regarding moses and as you know in parenthesis today's gospel was from mark if you read the same the same pericopy in the gospel of matthew you will see variations uh and so because of of those different understanding the hermeneutics of the book of genesis they asked him that question but as you heard and i heard what god has joined together no human being must separate and i think that the words of jesus is exactly the stand of his church regarding divorce that is we are to avoid divorce at the at the most maximum way seeking for dialogue to resolve issues providing counseling to prevent an outcome of divorce because of what jesus said while god has joined together no human being must separate that is if god is the author of marriage it is not for us human to dissolve it yet you and i know the complexity of this in situations when there is abuse in situations where dialogue is not possible you and i know about those situations which we must be very understanding and compassionate the missionaries of mercy can help us a lot there you know pope francis pope francis had given a lot of attention to marriage as john paul ii did you know john paul the second heart has a body of teaching of marriage so much so that he was as a philosopher you know john paul ii was a renowned not only in the catholic church but in the universities of the world as a renowned philosopher and he gave a lot of attention to a genesis teaching or marriage a lot of attention so much so that we have what we call the theology of the body uh what is the theology of the body pop cardinal rotilla was teaching in the university of louisville of lublin a a series a course on marriage and so he was elected pope in i think in october 18 it's 78 and and so what he did he took his notes of his classes of the university of lublin and gave it each wednesday on a caricatures on a teaching at saint peter's square so we have those wednesday caricases on the course that he was going to give in loveland and and we call that that has there is a name for that body of teaching because it was a continuous teaching wednesday when is almost like for a year and a half and we call that the theology of the body which is a very a substantial very solid foundation of marriage engagement and family life pope francis as well called a synod for the family and after the synod the big consultation he wrote a letter the fruits of the synod on the family and he called that the the the the the joy of loving even the name says all about the message of francis a marriage family is is is an opportunity to love and it is a joy to love your children to love your spouse it's a joy it's not a problem and if it is not we need to have the honesty and the transparency to see what are the obstacles why is the joy is not there and pope francis as well he he is very concrete you know francis is is a pastor and he's very concrete in his language in his approach in his conversation with people he has a rare ability to enjoy meeting people where they are he's a real shepherd and and he has given a lot of tips he's very concrete about marriage he's less philosophical in a way he complements john paul the second given the practicalities how to make marriage be a joy an experience of joy and if you google pope francis tips on marriage you will find what i found yesterday preparing this talk for you is right there but just to mention some of what i what google provided for me some of these tips is end every day with forgiveness in other words don't carry your grudge don't carry it to the following day end your day in forgiveness another another tip tip ask permission be courteous pope francis says often say thank you thank excuse me i am sorry he thinks that we need to to have that humility i am sorry i didn't mean it i did not want to offend you i was not feeling well i had a bad day today sort of building up the relationship because marriage is and family life is relationship is relating to one another and he says show gratitude show gratitude and gratitude as you know is here it's a question of awareness the thanksgiving the blessings may be there but you may not be aware you may not celebrate them and at times and a spouse have been with a spouse for 10 years 15 years 20 years the danger is that can take that spouse for granted deja vu well gratitude and that's why the jubilees are so important the anniversaries are so important it's a way of activating that awareness look all the blessings look the hard work of my spouse for my family look his kindness that i never say thank you you know awareness and that goes with every relationship every relationship um pope francis says let your spouse reach his or her greater potential and in a way that takes eyes the potential is eyes look and see isn't there a song like that look and see isn't that look and see i mean we can see and not see and so we we need to see the potential of a child the potential of a pastor a potential of my spouse but it takes it takes a new look it takes a look of wonder a creative look to see that potential pope francis says i don't know how to explain this you will be the best to explain that but he say keep the romance the romance in other words on your anniversary does it date to send a card to have flowers to take the spouse to dinner to see some pictures to increase that awareness of the day that god joined you together tip number six do not give up so easily go to this covenant that lasts forever and you know i don't know father richard if you agree with me but in preparing a couple for marriage if they come with the intentionality this is forever makes a difference if they come with intentionally let's see how it goes there is a huge difference how you come into marriage if you come with this will succeed regardless because we will make it succeed quite different from you come to marriage well let's see how it goes i mean the the commitment is not full as it should be somebody said i i think john paul said well john paul said love is a commitment that limits one's freedom on behalf of another quite profound like everything of john paul it is a commitment that limits one's freedom on behalf of the another in other words in other words there is a self dying that you have to give in you limit your freedom of course i would like to go to the to that of course i would like to do that no but you say no for the sake of the other love is a commitment that limits one freedom on behalf of another and pope francis said a perfect marriage is just two imperfect people we come with our family of origin we come with our imperfections is a perfect marriage is two impo imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other isn't that clever i repeat it a perfect marriage is just two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other no wonder saint paul corinthians 13 at the end of that poem on love that we find in the first letter corinthians 13 we need faith we need hope we need love but the greatest is you got it let us renew our faith i believe he came down on the third he is church and there's one baptism for the forgiveness of sins look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen heavenly father we know that you are the creator of all things and everything good come from you and so with confidence we lift our prayers and petitions to you for the holy father pope francis bishop estevez priests deacons and all religious that they may continue to serve the church faithfully through their constant witness of mercy and compassion we pray to the lord for the grace of fidelity that we may each be faithful to our promises and commitments to spouses children parents communities and friends we pray to the lord for all married or engaged couples that they may recognize christ in each other grow into true oneness of life and bring god's love to others we pray to the lord for greater respect for human life that all human life from conception to natural death will be respected as god's gift and a blessing to all humanity we pray to the lord heavenly father we ask that you may look upon your people in the lordly state and hear and respond to their prayers we have announced on the one we hold in silence also in our hearts as we present them confidently through christ our lord amen today's collection is our john and paul cosmas and damien and all of your saints we ask that through their merits and prayers in all things we may be defended by your protecting help therefore lord we pray graciously accept this oblation of our service that of your whole family order our days in your peace and command that will be delivered from eternal salvation damnation and counted among the flock of those you have chosen the place of god we pray to bless acknowledge and approve this offering in every respect make it spiritual and acceptable so that it may become for us the body and blood of your most beloved son our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer he took bread in his holy and venerable hands and with eyes raised to heaven to you o god his almighty father giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing gave the chalice to his disciples and said saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] when we eat this bread and drink this [Music] [Applause] [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed passion the resurrection from the dead and the glorious ascension into heaven of christ your son our lord we your servants and your holy people offered to your glorious majesty from the gifts you have given us this pure victim this holy victim this spotless victim the holy bread of eternal life and the chalice of everlasting salvation be pleased to look upon these offerings with the serene unkindly countenance and to accept them as once you were pleased to accept the gifts of your servant abel the just the sacrifice of abraham our father in faith and the offering of your high priest melchizedek a holy sacrifice a spotless victim in humble prayer we ask you almighty god command that these gifts be born by the hands of your holy angel to your altar and high in the sight of your divine majesty so that all of us who through this participation at the altar receive the most holy body and blood of your son may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing remember also lord your servants who have gone before us with a sign of faith and rest in the sleep of peace grant them o lord we pray and all who sleep in christ a place of refreshment light and peace to us also your servants who those sinners hope in your abundant mercies graciously that we may be refreshed and nourished by the sacrament which we have received so as to be transformed into what we consume through christ our lord amen brothers and sisters as i come every year on this occasion of the anniversary of john paul ii your patronal feast i also asked your pastor father richard to to give an updating of progress accomplished during this last 12 months and it is truly impressive your stewardship truly amazing when you really look on the high quality streaming efforts that you have done during the during the pandemic and the growth of 20 to 30 families each month enlarging this already large parish community and to know and to recognize that just at the offertory and donations you have increased by 64 percent this is amazing to me what that says to me and to others is your satisfaction you how you are pleased with the growth and the care the pastoral care under the leadership of other richard for this community of faith and a 30 increase in register family in a year 30 percent i don't know of any other perish with that right and anyway you are applauding but you are applauding to yourselves [Laughter] because a parish is the families and you enable your pastor to to succeed in leading you and shepherding you and and that's why he was appointed pastor last october 17 and this mission was upraised to perish and on april 28th pope francis appointed your pastor father richard as missionary of mercy a practice a ministry that he was already doing but now he has a mandate and not only from his bishop but from his pope and uh i i see many features i could go on and on for another homily [Laughter] but i know you want to get back home but all the all the growth in so many levels you clean up 100 of you involved in that perish cleanup day your job party festival with he father richard has brought from saint vincent to paul seminary the care for the outreach and visit the paul society the knights of columbus the jco is top station for our officers who care for our security and deserve our maximum esteem and the year of saint joseph how you have done it in this parish and model to other parishes i could go on and on the communications and technology not only you but almost like an online parish for the richard reaching out to so many uh 1 000 views weekly that's quite a record and you know i am particularly particularly happy about your completing the pavement of our diocese mortgage [Laughter] you know even in last may you completed that so you in visa vidi diocese you are clean completely i know that you have exciting plans for the future very exciting even in this month you have a lot of wonderful activities and we are on the final stages of the complete recognition of that process and uh you will hear in a very near future about that but what you are doing is is truly magnificent and i want to say that it is such a joy and satisfaction you know that i submitted my letter of resignation my retirement and you may think well he retired pope francis these appointments are like chess a move here alters a move there so i don't know the chance i don't know the game but it is not uh it is because the next a bishop in the apostolic succession is not ready at this very moment uh it will be whenever it will be for the praise and glory of the father amen amen bishop may i say a few words thank you i'd like to invite up the ministers of holy communion to the sick may you go on the compassion of christ to meet human suffering spurred on by the gospel you have received and may you assure those whom you minister today of the solidarity of our prayer and our good intentions go in peace thank you for your service excellency i couldn't imagine in the providence of god for you to come on this day which is very unique in the calendar for our diocese today we memorialize the florida martyrs and in the gathering space you'll see two of the adopted martyrs that our parish adopted last year roberto and eladio roberto and elabio gave their lives in defense of our lady of la leche and how fitting as we go into this next week when we prepare to for the coronation of our blessed mother that our bishop in the succession of the apostles which represents so many people who gave of their lives the yamasi warriors roberto and ellario many of the tamuquan tribe who embraced our lady in the chapel of the indians in our own community nocatee nocatee the tamuquin language meaning peaceful river bishop that you would be here before you celebrate with a vatican prelate the coronation of our blessed mother next week is sincerely a gift to us and that as we enter into this next week bishop along with all the priests of the diocese to prayerfully prepare for this monumentous occurrence which is a fruit of the beautiful nature of your heart and your ministry in this diocese which we are so grateful for thank you for securing a feast to our lady in the first shrine in the united states of america thank you for your love of the mission grounds which we are the northern territory to by the way how beautiful that john paul ii would be so dedicated to our blessed mother but bishop you ordained me a priest you installed me as a lecter and opened my mouth to the congregations of the world and you have secured me as a missionary of his holiness to extend the faculties of mercy wherever i go for that my soul is indebted to you as my father who has placed me in this place to minister to these beautiful people and it's been an absolute joy and i anticipate even greater joy next week next week is the canonical coronation of our lady of la leche so please check the bulletin and our website for details we will be showing a live stream of the massive coordination which is going to take place at the cathedral next sunday at two o'clock p.m so we're going to host that here i will not be at any of the masses next weekend it's all bishop's fault so i i'm very humbled and honored bishop that you asked me to represent you and your interests at the mission grounds welcoming the pilgrims obviously the cathedral is packed so i'll be hosting people down at the mission grounds if you want to come to join me i will be there all day on sunday and then saturday evening there'll be a special event for youth and young adults spread the word and we will definitely have a beautiful devotional experience there on the mission as the sun sets and we adore christ and we anticipate the crowning of our blessed mother as the new image appears in her historic chapel in the sacred acre so as we go into this next week a request on behalf of the bishop and myself and all of the priests of the diocese please keep us in your sincere prayers this weekend was a wonderful restorative renewal of marriage this is our time to renew our priesthood as well and we depend on your intentional love and your support so that we may come back renewed into the mission of the church and continue to proclaim the good news god bless you and after this mass there is a reception so if you want to join us come on into the tent and we'll celebrate for a little while thanks thank you the lord be with you blessed be the name of the lord our help is the name of the lord and may almighty god bless you all the father and the son and the holy spirit go in peace thanks be to god our recessional hymn is number 727 anthem [Music] we are [Music] and just [Music] who was justice [Music] [Applause] [Music] we [Music] who could [Music] we are [Music] how are you
