abundantly upon us and make those hastening to attain your promises heirs to the treasures of heaven through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever amen a reading from the book of numbers the lord came down in the cloud and spoke to moses taking some of the spirit that was on moses the lord bestowed it on the seventy elders and as the spirit came to rest on them they prophesied now two men one named aldad and the other mad dad were not in the gathering but had been left in the camp they too had been on the list but had not gone out to the tent yet the spirit came to rest on them also and they prophesied in the camp so when a young man quickly told moses aldad and mad dad are prophesying in the camp joshua son of nun who from his youth had been moses aid said moses my lord stop them but moses answered him are you jealous for my sake with that all the people of the lord were prophets but that the lord might bestow his spirit on them all the word of the lord so [Music] the priesthood [Music] the law of the lord is perfect refreshing the soul the decree of the lord is [Music] the lord [Music] the fear of the lord is pure enduring forever the ordinances of the lord are true all of them just [Music] in keeping [Music] cleanse me from my unknown [Music] then shall we be blameless [Music] god [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james come now you rich weep and wail over your impending miseries your wealth has rotted away your clothes have become moth eaten your gold and silver have corroded and that corrosion will be a testimony against you it will devour your flesh like a fire you have stored up treasure for the last days behold the wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the lord of hosts you have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter you have condemned you have murdered the righteous one he offers you no resistance the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] greatest [Music] [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to your lord at that time john said to jesus teacher we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us jesus replied do not prevent him there is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me for whoever is not against us is for us anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to christ amen i say to you will surely not lose his reward whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea if your hand causes you to sin cut it off it is better for you to enter into life maimed then with two hands to go into gehenna into the unquenchable fire and if your foot causes you to sin cut it off it is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into gehenna and if your eye causes you to sin pluck it out better for you to enter into the kingdom of god with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into gehenna where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ on this 26th sunday of ordinary time i could not imagine a more sobering message from the word of god it strikes us moves us and should call us to action most definitely the second reading from saint james is a motivational speech to put into practice what christ teaches us saint james in my opinion is the greatest motivator in the new testament to live what we believe and we need st james to clearly deliver a message of urgency to us to our community and i fail in comparison with delivering the clarity of what he expresses to us this weekend what is the central theme of the scriptures first reading second reading and gospel responsorial psalm but to live equitably to live for the sake of one another to live stewardship the whole sense of time talent and treasure for the sake of community comes from a sense that god bestows his blessings upon us and we are called to share those generously with one another so that we may live in the unity and the mystical nature of christ's body in the world his church we are many members but one body you know what do you think that the catholic church is exclusively for catholics is that what the church would teach that there would be an exclusivity that those who can only participate is just for catholics why tell me it's an oxymoron yes we're taught as catholics to be apostolic and what does the catholic word mean what does catholic mean universal that what we have is to be universally inclusive that all people are welcome this is a very important reflection that these doors are open to all and this is delivered most clearly in the first reading as well as the gospel isn't it when we open up the book of numbers and we see moses's great responsibility of ministering to the hundreds of thousands of israelites what a job what a responsibility to muster up and motivate the behavior of the israelites so that they would not grumble and mumble and complain what a hard job i complain to god and i only have about 1800 families right imagine that so moses needed help so moses lifting up his desire to fulfill his vocation and ministry calls out to god and the spirit descends upon those in the tent and those named and the spirit is shared as a portion of what was poured out upon moses and these two eldad and maydad they were outside of the tent right but they still received a portion of the spirit so that they could prophesy now what happens in the midst of that joshua stirs up a rage and jealousy and goes to moses and explains to moses look stop them stop them my lord they're prophesying they weren't in the tent with us in our exclusive tent like you tent people out there right now they're not with us they're in that air conditioning you know they're not with us they can't receive the same blessing from god we're an exclusive group and then what did moses respond are you jealous for my sake would that all the people of the lord were prophets that the lord might bestow his spirit upon them all i pray to god that the lord who hit me in the same way i think as moses where like my whole life changed moses life's change i hope that passes to you i hope that passes on to the kids i hope that the kids grow convicted in the spirit that they would prophesy that they would lift up their voice in the world and proclaim the kingdom of god that's my prayer and i would share every ounce of what i have so that you would have it but jealousy does stir up in our midst and we begin to want things for ourselves and to live exclusively to push people away so that we could store our own resources and benefits before god but that is no way to live if you are to follow christ let's open up this reading from the letter to say of saint james and tell me i tell you what listen to this come now you rich weep and wail over your impending miseries your wealth has rotted away your clothes have become moth eaten your gold and silver have corroded and that corrosion will be a testimony against you it will devour your flesh like a fire you have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure you have fattened your heart for the day of slaughter if that does not rock you and make you come to some form of sobriety we need to continue reading it what is god aiming at what is saint john james expressing to us what is the urgency of this message my brothers and sisters it's a message that is very clear that the luxuries of life can lead us to a place of self-obsession mother teresa would put it this way that our need for money would lead us to the superfluous did i say that word right right superfluous i struggle with that one every now and then but it's her word so the superfluous and frivolous use of luxury the need of money leads us to the superfluous immersion and obsession with living luxuriously it's a slippery slope and it could grab a hold of us and trust me it will not let us go where then our possessions we are in turn possessed by and we do not utilize our possessions to build up others this is the urgency of the message and it absolutely compromises living equitably and it is probably one of the most fundamental temptations of the human person the desire for wealth money and luxury why is that there's a great jesuit who presented this as an exercise and i want to share this as an exercise with you to consider these words and if it appeals to you in any way listen to this quote only in money will my soul be at rest in cash is my hope and salvation it alone is my rock of safety my stronghold my glory once again i want you to interiorize that only in money will my soul be at rest in cash is my hope and salvation it alone is my rock of safety my stronghold my glory now does that speak to you how does it make you feel question do you live by that do you live by it partially or wholeheartedly how concerned are you with it if we begin to look within and really look closely in those spiritual mirrors that father leonard encouraged us to look at this past week if we look more deeply into ourselves we could see these little glimpses of behaviors and actions that would reflect this mantra my brothers and sisters trust me i know it i profess it i proclaim it and i see it time and time again we are called to be a stewardship community we learn stewardship by the way god manifested his stewardship by sending his only begotten son who gave all jesus christ poured out everything in the midst of the world to show us what stewardship can bring about in us and what does the stewardship bring about the precepts of the lord if we live by those precepts if we live that stewardship model give joy to the heart the joy enlivens us and it overwhelms us so much so that as we begin to live for one another we forget ourselves and we begin to live in the midst of god and the very kingdom that is present here among us that is the truth but there are things that get away from it you know when we think of time talent and treasure how absurd would it be i'm gonna pick on gracie i'm sorry for doing it but i'm gonna do it anyway gracie has a gift to sing what if gracie only sang in the corner of her garage removed from everybody in her house and we never heard her voice how tragic stephanie's gift of playing piano where she would only be in her garage playing her piano by herself the joy of the offering is that they are here to make offering before god and we join that offering with grateful hearts and lift up our prayers before almighty god we enter into community life by sharing our gifts and our talents and our resources but how tragic when we cannot plant our gifts in the community or when we keep them to ourselves this is the urgent message because if we have gifts before god if we have talents and if we have resources and wealth and we do not use it for the kingdom we see what happens it is thrown into the fiery hell of gehenna meaning that none of these things that have produced any fruit in the eyes of god is worthless my brothers and sisters i proclaim to you today that your gifts are not worthless the living hope of my heart is that we would be those prophetic witnesses of utilizing these gifts to build each other up and building a sanctuary before the world that will be a lasting memory of what he has done our generosity could never reach the heights of what christ has accomplished ever but man there have been many men and women throughout history who lived up to the point of extensive virtue haven't they our own patrons saint john paul ii mother teresa let me share a story of mother teresa with you there was a ceo of a company very successful company found himself in india and was inspired to go out and visit with mother teresa as he met with her he was very surprised because she began to talk about the positive impact that businesses can have how we do immense good in the world by creating things that are needed and by giving people jobs to make a better life for their families remember the whole call for you to read the dignity of human labor by john paul ii in the face of communism did you all do that how many of you guys did that yeah okay maybe zero none of you guys read that okay good one person read that i'm doing a great job here moses helped me moses helped me mother teresa mother teresa sometimes it feels like you know why am i here seriously no seriously you know i'm sure moses felt that too it's like you know mother teresa offered this listen to this if you have money use it she said don't just leave it in the bank put it to work and here's his business man wildly successful internationally and his takeaway was like that's great investment advice and considering the source it took on a whole new meaning as you can imagine he went on to say accumulating dollars after all isn't the end goal in life otherwise the world's richest people would be the most fulfilled yes brilliant money is merely a medium of exchange and it's far outweighed by health happiness and most of all love mother teresa quote love cannot remain by itself it has no meaning love has to be put into action and that action is service to my brothers and sisters this is a call for stewardship and these scriptures provide such a catalyst to communicate a clear and sobering message may we receive that message urgently and think deeply how we can invest our time our talent and our treasure to build the kingdom on earth and live equitably that is true prosperity when we live for the sake of one another and share from the gifts that god has given so that we may reflect the perfect love of the holy trinity undivided unity father son and spirit blessed in whom we our hearts take up rest may god benevolently continue to pour out his many gifts upon each of our families in this community especially to those in the tent so that we would live inclusively to all and reflect the generosity of god poured out for us upon the altar of the cross of jesus christ that nothing would get in the way no power no demonic influence no selfishness nor greed none of the seven deadly sins get in the way of our offering pairing with his this is our time and if one of you listen and follow that instruction i would be at peace as your pastor let us profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us man and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen father with hearts centered on your love and your mercy we lift up our prayers and our petitions for the holy father pope francis bishop estevez priests deacons and all religious that they may continue to serve the church faithfully through their constant witness of mercy and compassion we pray to the lord lord hear our eternal god for you so loved the world that in your mercy you sent us the redeemer to live like us in all things but sin so that you might love in us what you loved in your son by whose obedience we have been restored to those gifts of yours that by sinning we had lost in disobedience and so lord with all of the angels and saints we too give you thanks as an exultation we acclaim [Music] holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory [Music] [Music] blasted is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving you thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me i shall lift up the chalice of salvation [Music] this we proclaim your death oh lord until you come again therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope felipe our bishop the clergy and your entire people remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and martyrs and all of the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages that we may also merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever
