hey everyone Adam micher singer songwriter and vocal coach we're going to jump straight into high [Music] notes lost to me with high notes one of the most important aspects we got to work on is our placement and resonance placement is where we subjectively feel the sound resonating resonating is really just a fancy word for vibration where do you feel the sound vibrating that's really all it's talking about when we're talking about high notes we got to make sure that we allow the sound to come out in the right places in the body if we force the sound into specific parts of our body we're going to end up with a less desirable sound let's go over a couple things one thing when when a lot of people talk is they'll talk with their voice way back in their throat like yo how's it going so this is a really bad resonance and placement of my voice you know because I'm putting all the pressure backwards against my vocal cords and that's going to cause a lot of problems as time goes on whereas what I want to do is I want to bring the sound more forward the more forward I can bring this sound as I'm speaking the better off I'm going to be as a singer as a speaker I'll be more intelligible people will be able to understand me but it will also allow the sound to carry much better even if I'm quiet when I'm really careful about where I place my sound it can be quite intense and forward whereas if I let the sound fall back in my throat and I even try to like increase the volume it's it's still hard it's not as intelligible to understand what I'm saying so you can understand how placement has a really big part to play in notes in general but high notes in particular because we're going to feel them and everybody subjectively feels them in slightly different places but we want to place them more or less in what we call a forward upward placement so the more we can imagine getting the sound up and out of our throat and up here into the front of the face the better off we're going to be this is a term that many people have heard called singing into the mask so in Elizabeth in times they used to have masks that they would wear actors would wear masks on stage and in order to project their voices outwards to the audience without amplification they would speak into the mask sing into the mask so that the sound would carry that's literally just saying feel a buzz here in the front of your face and one great way to really start to experience this is if you have some sort of massager and be able to put that vibration right where you want to place the voice and that way with very little effort notice one of the things that I said at the very beginning of the video is that we want to allow the sound to resonate in the right place that's key because we don't want to force the sound up and out of the throat we want to allow it to come out freely naturally and finding that placement is so essential so when we create vibration vibration will will follow vibration so if I allow the vibration to be there naturally my voice will start to resonate more forward in the front of my face and so this I can use to find like specific spots okay that's banging my head these soft spots will allow me to bring my my voice into these places of my face and so then that way even if you're just speaking saying some phrases it'll bring your voice like there naturally I felt my voice kind of lift up and out of my throat that can be a super helpful way to get the voice up and out and if you're singing a note so this works for high notes pick any high note you're working [Music] on and then that way you can bring the voice up and out of the throat on whatever note you're singing in whatever song you're singing whoops I just dropped that so another great way if you don't have a massager is to really just bring your fingers to the front of your face and try to feel vibration there and see if you can uh bring the voice voice up into the front of the face and especially when you're talking try to bring that resonance forward hi how is it going bring that resonance to that spot and then you can bring that into different parts of your range how's it going how's it going and that way I'm bringing my voice more forward as I'm singing the phrase whatever it be L I've been i' been losing sleep you're bringing that sound more forward instead of being L man that's going to be much harder to sing another great exercise to open up the resonance cavities in the body is the NG sound many of you have probably played with this sing but here what I wanted to do is start with that and then I want you to pull away and try to open up the mouth so we're going to go now with this what you'll notice and if you watch in the back of my throat when I do sing my tongue and my soft pette meet but when I open to the a they pull apart completely and especially for higho notes we want that separation to happen so one thing that can help people that are really struggling with high notes is on an awe try to put your finger on your tongue and there I want you to try to think of making a nice clear a sound this is really going to help to open up those resonators that will fit the placement to where we want it to be when we're singing those high notes another thing to notice is that what we want to happen is for the uula on the soft palette the little dangly thing that's called the uvula we want that to go up now watch this and you can do it at a low volume [Music] ah and so you can see how the uula goes up the soft pallet Rises this is going to assist try that and see if your soft pallette Rises as well and your uula goes up that is a natural progression that needs to happen as we go for high notes this is going to create the space inside the mouth for placement and resonance to happen optimally now the reason why I emphasize this is because so many people when they think of singing high notes number one they don't make enough space in the mouth for the high note to exist number two they think of pushing up for the high note this allows for the mouth to open wide and the throat to open so that we hit the high notes more easily if I sing it like most singers think of singing high notes it's more like H uh and watch my mouth as I do that tongue is high and soft pallet is low that's going to lead to strain because we're not going to be allowing for the positioning of the throat to be in place also the next strains the chin goes up all of these things so rather than that what we actually want to do on high notes is Anchor downwards when we anchor downwards allowing the jaw to open properly we're going to notice that we're going to engage our support much better which is an absolutely crucial aspect not one that we're talking about right now but support is essentially meaning singing from your butt I know it sounds gross but you basically need to use all the muscles of the transverse abdominis the pelvic floor and lower back to press the air out of the lungs and so if you can think of pressing down baring down kind of like you're going to the bathroom for the high note with your pelvic floor all the way down to your butt then you're going to notice much better freedom in those high notes and it'll help with the placement so sometimes thinking of that downward pressure and anchoring can help throughout the whole system but that opening of the mouth is crucial whether you're belting or you're singing in mix so if you're singing in a mix where you want it to be a little bit more rounded a little bit more vibr in it then you're going to have a type of sound whereas if you have more of a belt so it's not quite as much of an opening as the which that definitely has much more of an opening it's more of the operatic classical style than the belt but both create that same space and the UVA naturally is going to lift up in the back so I hope this helps let me know if you have
