hello everyone so i wanted to make this quick video and talk about the top things that your children should know by the age of eight and so these are very simple basic things that i think all children should know and coming from a homeschooler i know that us homeschoolers we miss very basic things that we don't teach our children and also parents that have their children in public school and private school there are some things that we miss to teach our children these these are things that are very important that are simple that are just like the core foundation that i think all children should know and i just wanted to make this video because i just have seen so much of it this year that i thought it could help so many people so let's get started because i have made a list here so um number one writing their names so all children should know how to write their names right but when i talk about writing their names is a lot of parents make the mistake of teaching their children how to write their names in capital letters i've made the mistake and so i had my child um learn how to write her name in capital letters and then it was really hard to teach her how to write it the right way and then this week i met a third grader who was writing her her full name and capital letters and i thought wow you know that is something that children really need to get away from so she was also writing her nickname so she was writing her her first and last name in capital letters but her first name was her nickname it was not her real name it was it was a short version of her name and so it's very important that from the beginning you teach your children how to write their first and last name just the way that they would write in a document so the first letter is capital the rest is lowercase their full name not their nickname not the short version their full names and they should be writing this by the time they're done with kindergarten so by the time they're six they should be writing their full names let's move on to the next thing so our children should know the pledge of allegiance and i know a lot of homeschoolers are guilty of this they just don't teach it they don't find it useful because they just don't but i think it's very important that homeschooling parents teach their children the pledge of allegiance if you are a a citizen of this country that is something that you should teach your children when you go to events when you go to um different places they're going to be reciting the pledge of allegiance and i think it's very important that your children know it so you should be reciting it every day with your children until they know it let's move on to the next thing here i have their address so another thing that a lot of parents forget is teaching their children their full address it's it's something that maybe they don't need to know because um they don't need to write it anywhere but it's something that you should definitely teach them it's a safety thing they should know where they live they should be able to tell an adult where they live if they get lost along with that same note they should know um their parents um names so you know they call us mom dad mommy uh daddy uh papa mama but they should know mom and dad's full name first and last name they should also know a phone number um it could be one of their parents phone numbers cell phone it could be a home phone but they should know those three they should know their address their parents full name and a phone number it's just for safety god forbid your child gets lost how would they get back home so it's really important here i have birthdays so they should know their month day and year um so a lot of kids they know their birthdays but they don't know what year they were born i think it's important that our kids know their four birthdays what else do we have here they're elected officials our children should know their president vice president governor and mayor all those four president vice president governor and mayor i met a childish here who was coming out of public out of public school and um this child when asked who the president was said that their president was nancy pelosi and that is appalling that a child would think that nancy pelosi is the president and that this child is in school and that they wouldn't teach this in school and that they wouldn't know this and that their parents wouldn't teach them this see these are very basic things and i'm not trying to put a guilt trip on anyone because we're all guilty of these basic things that our kids may not know so please teach your children their elected officials we have also not only their address but they should know their continent their country their state and their city so if you ask a child what continent you live in they should be able to tell you i live in north america or i live in africa or i live in australia um let you know these things so continent country state and city they should know those four they should know where they are on the map they should be able to locate um their location on a map what else do i have here now we're going to move on to things that they do not not only know but that they can know how to do so um all children should know how to prepare a very basic meal like maybe a peanut butter and jelly sandwich here's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich just something really simple your children should know how to prepare something basic for themselves um all children should know how to ride a bike i know it seems simple and you know some parents think it might not be important but i have met adults who yet don't know how to ride a bike and they never got taught to ride a bike and they never learned lessons learned from learning how to teaching a child how to ride a bike start off with a balanced bike and a balanced bike is a bike without pedals i'll link a link one below for you a bike without pedals so that the child is learning how to balance themselves instead of starting off with a bike that has training wheels i made the mistake to start off with training wheels and when you take the training wheels off they have learned nothing about balance and um is having to learn everything all over again so sorry for the balance bike if not just start off with a bike without pedals or or just um just with a regular bike um and and another lesson that i learned was um so i was teaching my kids how to ride bikes and i would i was holding on to them for a long time just going back and forth teaching them how to ride their bike and then my husband says to me no she's never going to learn until you let her go and and and it really clicked that you know it was true and that day that i let her go she learned how to ride her bike so don't hold on to your kids when you're teaching them how to ride a bike let them go they're gonna learn by letting them go they're going to control the bike so all of my kids learn how to ride the bike the first day that i let them go so you hear that the first day that i let them go all of my children know how to ride a bike so you simply um start off with a balance bike and then just put them on a regular bike give them a little boost and let them go i know it seems like oh no they're gonna fall they're gonna get hurt they're gonna be fine all right moving on to the next thing uh how to make their beds all children should know um how to make their beds this is such a simple thing it's something that's simple but the simple things are the ones that um add up to the big things in life so if you get up and and your room is a mess and and then you want to go on to do the rest things in your day but you haven't succeeded at something so simple like doing your bed i don't know i think everything in life matters and the simple things like doing your bed uh make up who you are moving on to the next thing how to tie their shoes how simple as that right well the thing is that a lot of a lot of times these days sneakers come with velcro and so children are not having the the practice with laces so it is very important that you have your children practice even if you've already taught them haven't practiced um you can get one of those melissa and doug shoes those wooden shoes that they can tie every day or every few days so they can keep practicing especially if they have velcro sneakers because they're going to forget it they're going to forget it so moving on to the last thing here that i have actually before the last thing um safety all children should know safety so they should know that in an emergency they call 9-1-1 they should also know what happens if there's a fire in their house you should have a fire escape plan for your family they should know what's doing a fire where to go you should also teach your children about the poisonous things in in their community uh what are the poisonous snakes that they should stay away for from poisonous snakes maybe poisonous frogs what are the dangerous animals that they should stay away from in their communities very important that you teach your children about safety very very important lastly i'm going to end that your children um should know how to pray how simple how how beautiful to be able to communicate with our creator teach your children how to pray so all of my kids i taught them a very simple prayer before meal time and that is thank you god for this food and thank you for the hands who made it very simple they all know it they all say um i'm gonna go ahead and write it below in the description box so if you want to have your kids memorize and you can too and also before bedtime we all say psalms 23 and psalms 23 is a beautiful song to memorize as a family so we have all memorized and my husband and i and all the kids and we all say it together before bed you can also teach them a simple bedtime prayer it is important that you teach your children to to be thankful to the creator to not take things for granted to know that everything that they have they is by the grace of god and we owe it all to our creator so it's very important that you teach your children to pray and start by teaching them very simple prayers like the one i just showed you because from there they can build upon that um what i do is i know this may seem like a lot this whole video what i do is i have this little file box right with index cards inside and then what i do is i pull it out every day and i'll i'll randomly ask each child different things like can you tell me my can you tell me your address what continent do you live in can you tell me who are elected officials um can you tell me our phone number just simple things like that i just pull out our index card and i'll and i'll just review these invest cards so what you do is you you get a file box so you don't even need to have a file box just get index cards and you keep them there and every day you just you know review these things that you want your children to memorize the very basic core things that all children should know i hope this video was helpful i'm also going to link below in the description box a preschool standards list i created this to teach parents what our preschoolers need to know before they get into kindergarten and i'm gonna link below in the description box for you guys i'll link below anything else that i mentioned in the video i hope you find this useful if there's anything else that you think all children should know by the age of eight let me know in the comments and if you want to leave me a comment go over to my community tab that's where all the comments are and i can't wait to read them until the next time bye
