Isam marada is such a great fishery for laid up Tarpon because of the geography you know having Everglades National Park in the backyard of Isam Mara the gulf and the Atlantic and everything kind of merging to make this Tarpon Mecca that's really special but what makes it so great for laid-up fish is having the back Country Florida Bay having all these Flats these banks these Coes lagoons Lakes we've got issues about fixing the okobe Basin we've got issues about how we're going to transport water South to feed Florida Bay the Everglades the keys Isa marada I'm not telling you it's a challenge that can't be resolved but it's one that uh is affecting the long-term sustainability of the resources we love we like Tarpon what a beauty he's a nice fish oh yeah baby get ready W he's big peeling line what a beast Tarpon have characteristics that distinguish them from other species their size and strength top the list but they also behave in unique ways they swim in strings ball up like bait roll and gulp air and jump like billfish giant they also lay up Isa Mara presents many areas and opportunities for laid up fish in peak season you can find Tarpon laying up right off the banks of the shore with all of the edges and channels around it's a perfect habitat for a sleeping giant a laid up Tarpon is a a fish that is floating on the surface and more or less is not moving uh occasionally you know they will move they will slide or they will you know kind of you know kick their tail a little bit from left to right but uh but a late up fish in its most perfect sense is just a stationary Tarpon that is within the first couple feet of the water column that's that is what a laid-up tarpon is George look over here at this big fatty laid up on this golden bottom in about two feet of water wow getting a laid-up fish to eat can be very challenging uh there's times where uh the water's dirty and you know the fish are golden and and it seems like you throw it in front of them and they can't wait to eat it but uh there are other times when the water is gin clear and it is a bluebird bright sunny day and the fish is so aware of his surroundings and his environment or her environment that it is just so challenging to deceive the fish right there that dark right there see that yeah there you go nice one George very nice just let that thing sink down it's kind of strip they named Patty yeah you ready got it yeah good perfect perfect tag beautiful Pat let this Taylor go let Taylor go Patty still kicking Patty's gone with the help of the University of Miami and some really cool technology we were able to track Patty's course as she left the Florida Keys we were amazed at how far her migration took her Patty has given us perspective a personal Ride Along on her migration North it's encouraging to see a tarpon leave the keys and travel all the way to Virginia while we miss them when they leave it reminds us that Tarpon are a shared resource it is absolutely mindblowing to think that these fish that for so long we've thought you know are our fish Florida Keys fish Everglades fish it it's mindblowing that these fish travel you know completely around the State of Florida all the way up you know to Virginia and Chesapeake Bay it's unbelievable but one of the major things about learning that this migration is so vast is how important it is from a conservation standpoint all throughout the world to make sure that people take care of these fish as they go across their Coastline because they're not just keys fish they're not just Virginia Beach or Chesapeake Bay fish they're not just Texas fish these fish are everyone's fish and having the uh the information that that Dr Lou and Dr alt uh have been able to learn over the past you know 10 years or so and and showing us where these fish migrate it gives us that extra piece of knowledge that we need to take further measures to uh continue to protect these fish and uh and have you know our kids and Grand kids and their kids be able to still enjoy them God go good job Sam good job what a beast love that M man nice fish holy dude it this is a this is an absolute giant great job starts here [Music] there is a fight going on right now but the battle isn't being waged with a rod and reel it doesn't involve a sharp hook and a screaming drag it's over for a number sandwiched by two letters H2O roughly 19% of the State of Florida is covered in water lake okobi is Florida's largest freshwater lake historically its overflows went South through the Everglades feeding nourishing and cleansing the natural habitat and ultimately ending up in Florida Bay where it's stain thousands of Acres of seagrass and the balance of salinity this balance is necessary for the seagrass and food chain to thrive in Florida Bay Bait fish shrimp crabs redf fish snook Snapper sharks Bone Fish permit triple tail and Tarpon all of their lives are impacted by the changes we impose on their habitat this graphical map reveals how Lake okobi overflows once flowed South through the River of Grass but with the expansion of civilization and cultivation the Herbert Hoover Dyke was built around the lake to keep it from overflowing and flooding the surrounding areas unfortunately this disrupted the natural Southern flow of fresh water the booming agricultural business with its pesticides and runoff have created a toxic imbalance of Lake okobi when the water reaches Peak levels it is released and diverted East towards Stewart and West towards Fort Meyers choking off the Everglade and polluting the coastal edges of the state down this threat impacts South Florida real estate tourism and the condition of drinking water this isn't a prediction of what might happen in the future it's a harsh reality of what is taking place today everything flows South and Florida Bay is the indispensable factor that gives strength and vitality to the Florida Keys the solution lies in acquiring enough land in the Everglades agricultural area to store clean and move water South into Florida Bay efforts are underway but politicians need to hear from concerned citizens log on to bullsugar.org Florida and the wildlife within it you know nature Delta is a card that we're dealing with so we've got issues about fixing the okobi Basin for sure we've got issues about how we're going to transport water South to feed Florida Bay the Everglades uh uh the keys Isa marada those are all critical parts of sustaining the Glorious worldclass Fisheries in the keys right I it's not constrained to the Everglades it's the whole South Florida that's involved and so it's going to take you know a fair amount of focused science to inform decision making to set up the right policies that minimize the risks to the system I'm not telling you it's a challenge that can't be resolved but it's one that uh is affecting the long-term sustainability of the resources we love we like Tarpon your are probably thing right here any permit is a high for somebody you know to catch any any size but they go in in in in different calibers of how they classify a permit so anything from 10 lbs you know under it's a permit e it's going to take off any second I know is but then once you go from 10 lb to 20 and you jump to the second number going 20 lb walk once you're in a 20 you're like amazing well when you hit that 30 mark That's those are fish of a lifetime those are fish where see my body I I I can in my one hand count how many on fly I have uh guided to or caught myself and none of them have ever been captured on film definitely my biggest one nice nice nice work being smart here being smart here easy easy here easy here he sees me he hates it dude hates it hates it if he sees me he be easy though come on baby come on baby doesn't want to give up no he's a big fish man definitely in the 30s I I think he's about 30 lbs man I think he's fat he has those little runs you know he does he hasn't done anything spectacular there you go head up head up turn him to the left oh oh yes oh he's going to kick off back this way back this way killing me things got me so nervous right now you have no idea oh just keep doing everything in your power brother you be smart think it all the way through I got her he's not going to let me have that thing dude he's he's going to break my wrist that thing is going to break my wrist now when you get that close to him you're on a very short leash come here dude there's no way hold on get her jar get her oh my God they get one for my buddy they catch him one that is at that standard of a fish this thing that's oh my God look at that big you know when you seeing them it looked like a tarpon and all a we get it from start to finish something we can always go back and you know watch again it's that's a that's a fish of a lifetime 30 lb dude what an awesome fish so I knew how important that is for myself wow was wow wow wow as a guide two6 you know guide somebody to that but for as a fish for himself as a personal I don't you know it's going to be hard to beat that one it'll be hard to beat how awesome was that buddy the catch your biggest perit on
