Shodoshima’s “Angel Road” Sand Bridge

that's some good iced coffee from 7-eleven how you doing everybody this is shodoshima check it out i woke up to this i love living right on the side of the beach here right on the coast and in this episode i'm going to be hey there's my hat i've been looking for it all day what are you doing here in this live stream going to be taking you from here where i'm staying this is hotel idi to the other side and that is the angel angel road do you see those people walking on water [Music] how cool is that they're walking on water or are they we're gonna go over there right now and find out what the heck are those people doing we don't kid around on this on these live streams we're going straight straight over there figure out the deal as is that a um is that one of the fairies no i don't know there's a lot of action going on here in shorashima last night i ate at that ramen place we're gonna be passing it on the way this is a wonderful area to stay for a few days but i'm here on a mission and my mission starts at 10 am where i'll be filming a main channel episode on a topic to be released fairly soon it looks like they could no longer cross oh we got to figure this out i'm pretty excited i'm pretty excited even though i was there yesterday i could cross angel road is this magical road that appears uh when the tide goes out there are some islands here on this side of shodoshima this is near tono not too far away uh maybe five minutes four or five minutes drive and uh on the south side of the island and when the tide goes out you can actually walk across from from this beach resort to these islands over here and you can keep on walking across there and it's kind of a neat thing called angel road and i'm no angel i'm no devil either so let's see let's see if we can cross maybe some of you might be angels help me out here this is where i ate uh dinner last night it was so good they used some sort of fish stock in the ramen soup and the noodles were so they were kind of different too i'm not sure what was up with that but i sat here watching the sunset with the beer some gyoza and a bowl of ramen and i ordered it with this with the topping you can get ramen with toppings you don't have to it's like you can make ramen into like a like a pizza in japan you don't have to just take what what they give in front of you you can add an ajitama you can add more beef more more pork steak i mean chashu you can add here a special seaweed that's found uh and cultivated and it was so good i'm not even sure what it is just like that bridge over there it looks like you have to go in the water now to cross this is going to be interesting the tide is up you can smell it it smells like the tide oh yeah i can't can't get through there all right so to get around you have to go through the hotel or you have to walk into a special place i'm not a hotel guest so i should probably go around but being me i'll just walk in the hotel see if they yell at me i'm a guest of the island that means something just somebody else i was just really amazed at how much the island does have here a lot of motorcyclists i guess it's because it's summer there's a 7-eleven down there loads of restaurants beyond just that sushi place behind it beyond just this uh seafood place in the ramen place i showed you there's lots of different places to go this is the shodoshima international hotel and this is right in front of the angel um angel road so let's go inside and take the shortcut [Music] and we'll come back around everything is wonderful thank you very much all right let's get to the angel road i kind of like when i walked through here yesterday and they do have a cafe they got others other sorts of services so i thought i'd get my coffee here but i went to the 7-eleven instead really good iced coffee they got a gift shop here which i thought was good so i might pick up some stuff this looks really good looks like there's some kind of uh some kind of really special uh juice kuromitsu or something inside there there's an onsen on the right hey awesome adam from 2099. all right angel road open oh i got the power [Music] hey awesome awesome meadow do you mean in terms of comments for the uh for that live stream i did that's pretty cool i did do the midnight snack run i got i did i said if we get it i'm going to do the vanity snack run and i did it before i left [Music] and ezekwazion is here how you doing yo bring it last night this is a was all decked out in these neon purple lights which is pretty awesome and they had an inflatable flamingo which i guess did not make it i wonder what happened last night on this other side seems like a pretty nice hotel the view that they have the sun sets over in this direction so the view that they have is is way better than mine um it does look like a like a 1980s hotel though but um a lot of these places are are actually uh renovated in the inside so they look a lot nicer than they do on the exterior which is just a cement block kind of like a bubble era looking hotel they didn't care so much about what the exterior looked like they just wanted to build it quick to get people's money back in the 80s all right people are coming here build something quick oh gosh look the tide is in so we can't cross without getting wet but that's not a problem since as a human being it was built to get wet that's why if you went to ohio state university between 1992 and 97 you might see a student walking with an umbrella in the rain closed why i brought that umbrella i'm not really sure but i was often just getting wet so this is the angel bridge and probably the new thumbnail for this video it's a lot better but you can see you can't apparently those people are stranded on the other side i don't know but when the tide is out you can walk across and when the tide is in you have to swim across i can't get this gimbal wet so let us try now the tide is in if the tide is out you can walk it's very it's still morning here hey is this mr das are you driving later i am i'm driving a little teeny rinky dink uh james bond for your eyes only looking car [Music] i don't know he had like a little little volkswagen that was pretty scary with the top down looks more like that than it does the aston martin girl pulls up in her car the music uh they had this weird comedic music it was really funny because it was a crappy little td car and that's sort of what i have although it's not too crappy it goes i can't believe that the uh road is this was all land and now it's out the tide is in the land is out the road is out that's pretty deep that's pretty deep can i do this [Music] the water is nice and these birkenstocks are waterproof she could not do it but she has daddy leo you will do it leo daddy's although daddy might have to because it's getting a little deep wow it is actually getting a little deep i lost a sandal doing something similar i guess i'm not an angel because you would float you fly over this angel's got wings angels don't swim i don't think there are many angels around here haven't heard any bells all right we're done we did it well if you're watching this in the future this is from the future this is what the world looked like in 2022 still clean look at how clean that water is i don't know if you're watching this in 2032 has everything dried up i don't know it's pretty beautiful last night i was looking at the sunset with my beer over yonder i was thinking boy we live in a really beautiful planet don't we [Applause] i'm a scuba diver a dive master since 2004 and a lot of dives and i've seen a lot of coral reefs and whatnot underneath the ocean unless you're a diver you don't see it's kind of messed up down there sometimes like big cities in tokyo takamatsu okayama i guess the kansai region and there's a lot of stuff on the island but it still has this we're an island kind of feel to it which i like that's what we crossed just now you and i we're that guy oh your pants are fine it's not that deep [Applause] at the end here you can go all the way around some people some people are going around the island it's harder now but you can see um there's some emma or like message boards and you can leave a message behind on one of the trees or something which is also very japanese a shinjuku thing to do but the island is very holy and you don't want to climb into trees and stuff like that it's a nice scene here for a minute it's nice to see you again mr das it's been a while we'd have another sunny one today and tomorrow too i'll try to film the this episode's opening and closing scenes in a sunny day tomorrow i only have access for today what i'm about to film this is one day so i gotta go they're coming at the 10 10 uh 10 a.m so i have a an hour to get ready so i have to go set up the dji ronin 3 gimbal i bought to get some good shots we're gonna have the sony a1 with a 16 to 35 f4 power zoom on there let's get some good shots of the secret topic i'm covering here olives natural sandbar where the drinks it should be free if it's natural i guess people gotta make a living i can't feel it it's still kind of early but it's gonna be a hot one i think it's gonna be 35 today but my car's top opens so you don't i can't do this with sandals see the rocks are getting into it i don't want it to float away either so one of them is an old sandal and one is a new sandal can you tell which one i lost one in the muck when i was uh uh peter and i were uh riding around hokkaido there is a bell i guess an angel did get his wings these babies oh should we go across well yeah the tide's coming in fast it's deeper than it was before just in a couple minutes the more you think the deeper it gets it's true story so [Music] [Music] hey guess who's in the house w r x double that does look like a turbo doesn't it probably would catch a lot of fish here uh the there's a you know this island is famous for um for beef for its wagyu but it's an island in japan so you'd think they'd have really good fish and they do but it's hard because it's so overshadowed by the by the beef that they have here all right we're gonna walk around the hotel this is pretty cool i think you buy the emma and the things either inside the hotel or somewhere here this must be some person selling them and uh uh it's always it's always nice to do that if you come to japan you can visit a shrine i think it's like 500 yen with four dollars at the exchange rate here you get a chance to write a wish or something it helps out the shrine and you a bit of you remains behind in japan when you fill out one of these emma boards at the shrine and and leave them behind it's kind of nice it's like abe lincoln four scorer seven three thousand years ago so there you go this is the angel bridge um i i thought it was just a neat little thing to bring you on a lot of the attractions here on shoto island are natural places i was at a rice terrace the other day driving over it with my um convertible car and i noticed i was taking with uh insta360 video over my head i taped it to the back of the convertible so you can get this 360 really wide view as you can see me driving on the bottom and the scenery all around and then i got back and i can't fight the file is there on the 360 camera there's no internal memory but i can't when i go to import it i can't do it so i have to re film this again it's on the card but it's not it's it's weird it's on when i look at it on the camera but when i import it into the from the sd card into my computer it's not there bizarre my coffee's at the hotel so it'll still be there the owner has been really friendly very local a family-run place there you go people some people are brave enough to cross and then there's those people i just want to take a picture you gotta you have to know when the tide is in and out guess what it's in [Music] yeah leo and kanai are probably to come with me in october when i come back here to film the olive harvest i'm just here mostly for scouting to build the relationship i like to when i give her go when i come to islands and film it takes time to get to know people it's hard to you can do that by emailing and stuff but i always found the best way is to get out there and to do it you just go and you meet people exchange your business cards you show them that you're not like typical media media media doesn't have a good image anywhere i mean maybe to viewers but if you're interviewed by media and things like this typically they go in and they leave and they don't and they edit the story the way they want to and locals really never liked the news in japan really knows but if you're somebody who goes there you spend time there you spend money there you talk with them you actually care about their island you care about you know this is their home um usually you'll get more stories and it takes yeah and it doesn't make a lot of sense monetarily it makes sense for the story to get to know people i that's been my experience so today i'm really happy to get a chance to meet with locals today to film the episode i want to do
