ministries that keep our church flowing with vibrancy and life if you all are ready for the word of god i want to invite your attention to a familiar passage psalm chapter number 30. psalm chapter number 30 and we thank those who have led us and worshiped us far with the prayers the welcomes the scripture reading and the devotion we thank god for you all i want to call your attention to psalm chapter number 30 and we will begin with verse number one through five one through five we've been in this month on say his name god matters yahweh el nes and that means essentially and that god is a god of forgiveness according to the hebrew translation of the word it literally means that god has forgiven us of a debt that we cannot pay ourselves and so we stand here as beneficiaries of the god who is gracious and merciful god in the person of yahweh el-naz i want to turn your attention to a particular passage that points to this and illuminates this psalm chapter number 30 and i want to begin with verse number one through five it says from the king james version i stole thee oh lord for thou has lifted me up and has not made my foes to rejoice over me o lord my god i cried unto thee and thou house healed me lord you have brought my soul up from the grave and you have kept me alive that i should not go down into the pit sing to the lord o ye saints of his and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness here it is for his anger endureth but a moment in his favor is life weeping may endure for night but joy cometh in the morning if you'll indulge me as we exchange from this thought mercy will mature you mercy will mature you when you go through life and you have experience with god delivering you redeeming you restoring you you have no other choice but to look back reflect and say i can either be matured by this or i can continue in my own way and this is the reason this is the framework in which we have the possibility of forgiveness and with your prayers this morning and god's help i want to tag this text just that mercy will mature you see the body of scripture that we know today as psalm chapter number 30 verses number one all the way down to verse number five has an interesting background and i i want to really illuminate this today you've probably heard this particular passage on many occasions many funerals many comforting moments is quoted quite often as a matter of fact this is one of the scriptures we use to provide a comfort and perspective to those who seemingly need it weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning i'm compelled to knowing that the text gains life when you understand why david penned those words he'll go on a journey with me the first chronicles chapter number 21 just for a moment so that we can gain clarity on why the psalmist david penned psalm chapter number 30. in verse number one and following i'm a hollaback preacher you all know me when i preach i need somebody to give me an amen i need somebody to talk back to me this is not a place where it's dryness in this church amen there's the spirit of the living god among us so as you're right there in your space of worship i want you to tune in with us tap into the power that you have in worship and prayer first chronicles chapter number 21. and the bible says that satan stood up against israel and provoked david to number the people but one of the things that's important to realize when observing this text is what happens before psalm chapter number or first chronicles chapter number 21 in relation to psalm chapter number 30. what happens before first chronicles chapter number 30 21 is that david had just come off a tremendous victory defeating giants of a foreign land the bible says that these were the philistines that were from the line of goliath defeating these giants that david have forgot to slay the first time when he slayed goliath but the bible takes special note to say in verse number eight of chapter number 20 of first chronicles that these were born unto the giant and gath and they had fell by the hand of david and by the hand of his servants the very first next verse of the chapter talks about satan standing up against israel provoking david now to number israel now it may not that may not mean much to you but i stopped by to let you know that oftentimes in life after the lord allows you to experience tremendous victories and tremendous opportunities in life immediately following that sometimes satan will find himself at your front door trying to tempt you to go back from your victory what the bible says in verse number two of first chronicles chapter number 21 that david said to joab and the rulers of the people go number israel from beersheba even to dan and bring the number to me so that i may know it after you experience great triumphs hear me beloved great wins after you experience the mountaintop experience you have to be very careful not to take credit for what god has done you following this you it can be very easy for you and i to believe that you were the reason and i were the reason that we were victorious and the reason you were successful in life is because solely of your personal efforts but the lord says in essence and is telling us to remember who gave us the victory we got to see joab the captain of the israelite army here and verse number three says the lord will make his people a hundred times as many more as they should be but my lord the king are they not all your lord's servants why then does my lord require such this thing why does he cause great trespass that is great sin to israel in other words david don't they belong to you you have a right to count them watch this thing now the bible says in verse number five joab gave this sum of the people that were able and enlisted to fight somewhere between 1.6 million people included in that number but the bible says in verse number six that levi and benjamin he counted not among them for the king's word was abominable to joab if i could just stop right here and put a dime in the meter and tell you that everybody needs somebody in their life that would tap them on the proverbial shoulder and let them know when they are not in the will of god i don't know about you but i don't need a bunch of people around me that's always going to agree with me that's always going to tell me what i want to hear but sometimes in my life i need some people that's going to tap me on the shoulder and say son i don't think you ought to do that well the bible says that god was displeased with this thing and therefore he punished israel in verse number seven and bible says that david in verse number eight gone goes to god and says god i've sinned greatly because i've done such a thing but i pray i beseech you to do away with the iniquity that is the sin of thy servant for i've done very foolishly you know that's sometimes like us after we get a monishment in advance after we get early encouragement after we get warning after warning to do the right thing and at the middle minute we find ourselves against the will of god and the hand of god is getting ready to come down upon our lives we find ourselves pleading with god well in verse number 9 and 10 the lord spake unto god david seer saying go and tell david thus saith the lord i will offer thee three things three options and choose one of them that i may do it unto thee and this is where it gets interesting because in verse number 11 through 12 god comes to david and says choose thee one of the three years of famine three years ah of that and then three months to be destroyed before your whole foe while the sword of the enemy overtakes you or three days of the sword of the lord in pestilence in a pandemic if you will the lord had gave him three options let me go over them one more time if you are not very familiar with this passage three years of famine three months to be destroyed before your enemies or the sword of the lord overtaking you and pestilence even in the land now god said therefore remind yourself of this word because i will bring again to you what you choose in essence david you won't get out of this punishment because you sinned against me you know these are really not good choices either way he would have had to suffer in some form or fashion and this is one of the things about suffering that i realize is that oftentimes god has to afflict a strain on us for us to learn the lesson sometimes god has to hit us where it hurts so we can pay attention sometimes god has to do something that we think is radical in our lives so that he can get a reflection sometimes the lord has to be personal with us so we can learn the lesson well the bible says that david said unto god i am in a great strait let me now fall into the hand of the lord here it is don't miss your shout for very great are his mercies ah let me not fall into the hands of man y'all know on that behalf i'm just like david i'd rather be in the hands of a just god and i'll be rather in the hands of frenemies and enemies at any given time because if i know i'm in the hands of god god is going to make sure that my judgment is just and it's going to be right with his balance of justice and mercy i know that his pronouncement will be perfect i know that what he's going to do to me other people would not well well many of us we don't have grace and mercy for others we don't have forgiveness for others even in this month of understanding the character and nature of god's forgiveness many of you in the cyber sanctuary are still struggling with the fact that god has told you to forgive someone matter of fact it was up to you you probably tear that page out of the bible you're discredited and say that's not the word of god that must be an interpolation that must be somebody else's words but here it is if god gives us leniency if god gives us long suffering yeah yeah yeah you see your brother and sister fall you shouldn't just talk about them you should give them forgiveness i don't need to park right there because we got some sanctified folk in the house and so the bible says in verse number 17 all the way when you look at the pericope from verse number 14 through 17 the bible says essentially in those particular verses that the lord sent pestilence upon israel because this is what the decision of david determined he chose this option and there fell of israel 70 000 men see the text takes special notice to let you know that this was david's temptation in the first place to number israel and still seventy thousand men were destroyed those were those who had nothing to do with david numbering israel i pull a principle out of that the principle is that you number one ought to be careful of who is in your inner circle you ought to be careful of who is in your concentric circle of concern you got to be careful of who's close to you yeah but here it is you got to be careful of who's leading you because their influence could cause your downfall could cause you to go down the wrong path to cause you to go down a road that you do not want to be on you may suffer even the judgment and punishment of the path that they want you to take but by the road that you don't want to take they don't want to take themselves and so you got to be careful of who's leading you who's influencing you i'm talking about those people who work in corporate america i'm talking about those people who work in the academies and universities i'm talking about those people who are going back to school you got to be careful of who's your inner circle you got to be careful of who's influencing you a child of god may i submit to you you should be careful to reevaluate the priorities of the people you keep close to you that's why i'm very careful about who i keep in my circle because you ever looked around and wondered how in the world problem after problem trial after trial situation after situation keeps coming upon you and sometimes you just want to look up to god and say what did i do lord that's not about it here to tell you it may not be you but it may be who you have around you the bible says that there was an angel sent to jerusalem to destroy it and as he was getting ready to demonstrate this act of demolition uh here it's getting good to me the lord behold says it is enough stay thy hand it's getting good to me y'all he says it's enough say thy hand good god almighty how many times in your life has the lord had his angels standing upon your life how many times has the angel been right there to carry out judgment when you're at the wrong place at the wrong time how many times has the lord been there to issue a punishment but the lord said that's enough stay your hand and stop here it is you ain't talking back to me here the mercy of god is bigger than your guilt yeah it's guilt that leads you to repentance but i want you to understand that the forgiveness of god is so much more deeper than you can comprehend or imagine because in the midst of the crushing in the midst of the perplexing moments in the midst of david reaping the benefits of his sin god says stop stay your hand watch this thing now he said that's enough stay your hand and the angel of the lord was standing at the threshing floor of the jebusite in verse number 17 david says unto god is it not i who commanded the people to be numbered even i that have sinned and done evil indeed but as for these sheep what have they done let thy hand i pray thee o lord my god be upon me and my father's house and not on my people that they should be plagued see a good preacher a good pastor a good shepherd a good minister a good advocate knows yeah when when to go and plead on behalf of the sheep if you keep reading in the text the bible says that david and the elders of israel go to the rushing floor to build a memorial where the temple of the lord will be built later on this is where the house of worship was to be in that dispensation in psalm chapter number 30 here it is is the first song that they sing as they enter into the temple so psalm 30 is very directly related to this narrative and first chronicles matter of fact they sang psalm 30 to god when they built the temple and entered the temple now turn to psalm 30 with me and let me tell you what david is saying in context and no wonder why the subscription has this declaration he says i will extol you lord in other words he says i will worship you oh lord because you have lifted me up people who are true worshipers people who worship in spirit and in truth do it because they don't do it for themselves they know that the only reason why they've been lifted up from the pit is because god lifted it their mom he says you have not made my enemies to rejoice over me i do remember the first option that god gave david right the first option was that he was going to allow the enemy to advance and overtake david for three straight years in essence god was going to make him not win any time during three years he was going to take loss after loss and season of loss after season of lost and so david is singing a song god i thank you because in my sin you still didn't let my enemies advance to rejoice over me oh y'all ain't saying nothing in here anybody got some enemies in your life any everybody has some frenemies in your life enemies are the people who are happy at your demise they're the people to see you take missteps and mistakes they're the people who want to see you fall and fail but david said to god god i thank you because you didn't allow those who want to see my demise rejoice over me he said lord my god i cried unto thee and thou has helped me ain't that good news y'all because the lord has brought us from the pit and kept us alive one of the things i want you to notice about the movement of this text is how david after he's gone through what he's gone through david is no longer taking credit for what he has done every time he opens his mouth he is saying i'm going to extol you because you have lifted me up not because i've lifted myself up he says i'm going to worship you because you didn't allow my enemies to rejoice over me not just that you kept my enemies off my back god i cried unto you you have brought my soul from the grave whenever you go through life's trouble and life problems you ought to be careful not to take the credit for what god has done in your life you gotta understand the reason why david was in sin is because he numbered the people so that he could have something to bolster his pride but here it is after he goes through this season of sin he comes he comes back now to say to god i'm not doing this by myself you are the one who gave me what i have you're the one who exalted me when i was just an obscure shepherd you you were the one who gave me a place in your kingdom and i need somebody in the room at least five people in the room who could be real to say with me the reason why i am right now where i am the reason i have this walk in this talk the reason i have my mind the reason why i'm still holding on is because of what you've done for me oh lord god you watch this thing now he says lord you have done it all for me and i praise you i extol you because i didn't do it myself and you did it all for me and so he says here it is oh ye saint of his give praise to him you know i'm just sick and tired of folk who have no song or or no praise on their lips after god has done something for them they just think that god has supposed to done it for them that god has done it because their privilege or their pride but no god didn't have to do it god didn't have to forgive us god didn't have to give us mercy god didn't have to give us grace but i know somebody in the house can understand by the graciousness of god that we're living manifestations of his goodness i know you come to church and you expect for people to sing to you i know you come in here you expect for people to cater to you we come in this house as servants of the lord because we have been forgiven we have been given grace we have been atoned for a man somebody you gotta have a testimony of praise on your lips every single time you reflect on how god is brought to you and i stopped by here to let you know that the reason you ought to sing the reason why you ought to praise god the reason why you extol god is because god has been so good to you the reason why you lift up your voice even though you can't even sing even though you came to carry a tune is because you know god is worth it and more they met somebody you know that god is the truth come here john god is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth you all know that god gives us truth in the character of his forgiveness if it had not been for god's forgiveness he would not be true to his own nature it was in his nature to send jesus it was in his nature to give us atonement it was in his nature to give us redemption because that's who he is and if that's who god is and we are disciples of the living god we should try in our spirit when we mature along this journey of discipleship to forgive others listen you don't need a million reasons to forgive others you just need one god forgave you of your sin you don't need a congregation to encourage you and forgiveness because you ought to reflect on how god has forgiven you in your past david declares in verse number four psalm chapter number 30. he says o ye sanctives give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness this word for remembrance is fascinating because it gives us the idea or the picture of a memorial what david is saying essentially is that i'm giving thanks every single time i remember how god is holy and i am not in other words whenever god delivers you from some place the holiness of god is manifested in his deliverance you ought to have a spiritual and mental memorial to remember what god has done with you so you can have clarity on how god has used his power in your life whenever you go through life and life takes you here and there you ought to have a reminder of what god has done for you so that every time you walk by some familiar place you can say to yourself god will get me through this and so that every single time you walk by an unfamiliar place you understand that god will get you through this because you've been there before yeah you've been there before in your mind you've been there before in your spirit you've been there before physically you were in a place where you needed deliverance and you got to understand every single time god takes you to a place every single time circumstances in life takes you to a place you ought to set up as david says a mental memorial where god has delivered you from so you can say that's the place where the lord set me free that's the place where the lord taught me grace that's the place where the lord gave me a little bit more time after sickness that's the place where the lord saved my marriage that's the place where the lord kept my mind together that's the place where the lord matured me that's the place anybody in here can give thanks at the remembrance of the time when you passed by yeah yeah he said give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness but here he is he concludes this way for his anger endureth for a moment but in his favor is life in the original hebrew rending of the text the idea is this that the favor of god upon your life is everlasting you know the favor of god lasts more than the anger of god god almighty y'all do know what favor is favor is when god covers you and keeps you and blesses you even though you did not expect it or deserve it favor is rendering something your way that you didn't necessarily do anything to achieve it or earn it i don't know about you but that's enough for me to child because i made god angry at times in my life and i thank god that even when i may got angry his anger was standing at my door but his favor looked down upon me and he didn't deal with me in total anger i remember psalm chapter number 103 it says the lord does not treat us as our sins deserve nor does he repay us according to our iniquities and no wonder why david here says that weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning because the anger of god and the weeping is just temporary but the favor the forgiveness the joy of the lord is forever god almighty help me in here the thing about joy the thing about forgiveness the thing about our favor is because god has given it to us that means we cannot not necessarily receive it unless we tap into it and so you can't really receive favor you can't really receive forgiveness unless you accept it and some people think that favor and forgiveness comes by osmosis but no you got to ask for god's faith you got to ask for god's forgiveness you got to repent but here it is after god sees your heart he deposits favor in your life and someone might ask why do you look like you're glowing within why does it seem like you have a renewed pep in your step why does it seem as if you have a renewed hope that the joy of the world that tried to give it to you but they can't take it away it's the joy of the lord that gives you the ability this is the forgiveness of god that gets you the ability to to navigate this life in the time of a storm to navigate this life in the time of a crisis to navigate this life in a time of insecurity you got to understand that god has given you something powerful in the form of his forgiveness his forgiveness lasts forever and weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning if you're in a season beloved hear me where you are in this life not knowing where to turn where to go if you're in this life and you feel as if everything from your past is rearing up to overwhelm you if you're in this life and you feel as if you have no confessor to to talk and confess your sins to i want to introduce you and submit to you jesus the christ i want to submit to you yahweh el-naz the lord who is mighty and able to forgive you beloved you have to understand that you have to tap into this forgiveness i love the psalms and also the scriptures that were read in our hearing before without understanding that god is gracious you will think that everything that you do will reap the anger of god and just like that old writer says that you will be in the hands of an angry god but i want you to understand that god's anger is temporary but his love endures forever you can always tap into his love if you make the effort if you make the conscientious decision in your heart to repent to turn back to god so they can heal your very being i'm just about done i'm about to take my seat i'm about to offer the invitation in just a few but i just want to let you all know that if we have been forgiven if we expect forgiveness we have to forgive others and that takes a bit of unshedding of your pride it takes a bit of putting off of the old man but god expects that of us every single day after we are beneficiaries of his forgiveness so today i want you to be in awe of the favor of god in all of the forgiveness of god because that's who he is you can't just look for god to do stuff you got to look to understand who god is you can't just expect god to be a fairy tale god and just give you everything your heart's desire you've got to know who god is and very at the the essence the core of his nature is the ability the capacity to forgive i need somebody here today to to know that forgiveness is essential with your walk with god the very mark of you being a christian is you loving god and if god loves you there ought to be some collaborative effort when it comes to forgiveness and today you can become a child of god by repenting of your sins to accept god as your savior confessing him as the sweetest name of mortal tongue jesus the christ who can save you from your sins and give you an eternal life you need to repent of your sins and walk with god because this is a process of discipleship and after you do that god will be just and fair to forgive you of your sins god bless you now and forevermore as we journey along with him in forgiveness in favor and in joy that the world can't take away god bless all my father [Music] is [Music] thoughtful and [Music] to blessed [Music] yes jesus will carry you through why don't you ask [Music] [Music] let the church say amen it is such an honor and a privilege to be here on today as we come to this part of our service we commemorate the death the burial and the resurrection our lord and savior jesus christ we do this every first day of the week in his remembrance he's died on a cruel cross for our sins we're just so i'm thankful to god for this opportunity to come before you in holy communion now paul used the idea of communion in the first corinthians letter to represent the union that is created by the partaking of the lord's supper he wrote the couple of blessings which we bless is it not the communion of the blood of christ the blood which we break the brain which we break is not the communion of the body of christ first corinthians 10 and 16. the word denotes the idea of fellowship or sharing to give the understanding that we partake of the lord's supper we are actually in fellowship with the lord sharing his sacrifices his body and his blood as he gave it on himself to die on the cross for our sins and partake in this communion we become united with christ so the idea of communion is also extended to include all christians let us go to our father in prayer father god we're so thankful for this opportunity to worship you on today and to go to this holy communion service in commemoration of your son our lord and savior jesus christ who died a cruel death on the cross for our sins thank you for this great sacrifice that you gave to us god and the lord you offered up your body for us we're so thankful for this opportunity to worship you and fellowship with you with this holy communion let us now partake of this holy communion at this time why did my savior come to work [Music] it is now time for us to consider our giving back unto the lord and only at the heights can you get a series in the collection appeal and a title and the title is it's not about the money the title is it's not about the money and last collection appeal we talked about it's about saying thank you understanding that god is the source he is the giver and we say thank you with our giving this time it's about trust and we find this in mark chapter 12 verses 41 through 44 and the new living translation reads jesus sat down near the collection box in the temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money many rich people put in large amounts then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins jesus called his disciples to him and said i tell you the truth this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions for they gave a tiny part of their surplus but she poor as she is has given everything she had to live on god does not require us to give everything that he's given to us but what he does require in our trusting him is to put him first so before we consider what needs
