where is the proof the proof is in our beliefs the proof is in our lifestyle the proof is in our relationships a life that reflects a perfect creator is the proof that we are his children what an exciting place to be I don't know if you know that but you know to travel with me it's exciting place um we've been talking about how to interpret the Bible and if this is a crucial subject because I hear so much in God's name that I think does not reflect who God is I want to I want to say a couple of opening things to you I hope you can really receive this you the Bible and the Holy Spirit our priority in Bible interpretation not professors not commentators not pastors you the Bible and the Holy Spirit our priority you must pray first read first fake first and then we can let other people help us the problem is we just tend to pass on what somebody else tells us are something we heard from somebody somewhere and don't look in the Bible ourselves Amen or o me I have tried I think my my gift my calling my passion my academic training has been to first of all make Christians thirsty to study the Bible for themselves and then give them the tools and the procedures that will help them do that in a way that others can follow their thinking based on what the text says I am committed that by the Bible is the only clear self revelation of the one true God but it was not written to your culture in your language it was written for you but not to you and the only way to properly understand any written piece of literature is to find out who wrote it when they wrote it why they wrote it and who they sent it to now if you skip that stage you can make words mean anything and one of the famous statements from a teacher I really like garden fie says a book that can mean anything means nothing and that's what's happened in modern denominationalism in America we had Christian doesn't it bother you that on every third corner is a church they won't talk to each other and they're dogmatic that their view of the Bible is the only view of the Bible holy moly what has happened to us so we've got to come back to say look let me present to you my thoughts on this text you look at it you pray about it and then you walk in the light of your own understanding so the key for me the key to interpreting scripture properly is to try to find the intent of the original author now how do I do that the his not my his historical setting the books literary context can't pull things out got to read the whole thing unique grammatical features what did the vocabulary mean then what are the words mean then what implications of those words were then what kind of literature is it the genre and then finally parallel passages now these are the areas to back up what I think the author is trying to say and give you and me a chance to explain to someone else why I believe the Bible says this now I'm so glad that your church goes through books of the Bible because there's no way to properly understand Scripture without working through the whole message and we're so guilty of taking little pieces and bending it or twisting it or ignoring it to make it say what we like and what we're comfortable with now I want to do a brief introduction to first John I know you've probably already done this but it helps me to show you what I'm talking about I'm gonna try to deal with the history and what kind of literature is this the genre have you been surprised when you look at first John that there are no personal greetings and no personal goodbyes this is not a normal letter this is not like you just picked it up the road to somebody this is a specialized piece of literature that's trying to prepare the church for something that's happened and what has happened is a heresy within the church that emphasizes the place of the human being and denies the place of Christ the first 300 years of church history the major enemy was the Gnosticism which is exactly the background to the book of first John the book of Colossians the book of Ephesians and the Gospel of John I'm gonna be so bold as to say if you never heard of Gnosticism you cannot properly interpret first John or the Gospel of John you say well I pray in that record there is a historical setting that must be taken into account when we look at these books now I was looking through my notes and trying to get something I thought be interesting to you I'm not gonna deal with a lot all the background like who is the author but I want to tell you this I'm so surprised that the books of John never say John do you know we have list of all the apostles John is never in the list of the god apostles in the Gospels never he's called the Beloved Disciple in first John his name is never mentioned he's just a committed follower in 2nd and 3rd John he is the elder in the book of Revelation he is the bond servant of Jesus Christ never mentions his name as Prince that is shocking an ancient litter to that literature that always put the name of the author this man is saying Who I am is not as important as what I say and he's trying to get your attention the other thing that's interested me as I look through this is to talk a little bit about this heresy think with me now the gospel came into a world of many religions and said this is the only true religion there is only one way to be right with God boy that calls that that calls trouble then as it doesn't and so there was a group of intellectual Greeks who said we're going to help these early Christians by helping them make their message relevant to intellectual Greek philosophy friends anytime someone tells you they're going to make the Bible relevant run them the Bible is relevant because it's the Word of God it doesn't need you thank you I'm over it I'm over it these false teachers posited some things an ontological dualism I just said that for those you've been to seminary an ontological dualism that matter and spirit are both eternal you see how it differs from Genesis matter in spirit in both eternal then they would say matter is good miss give me spirit is good but matter is evil and if you know anything about Greek writings they would say death frees the spirit from the body the prison-house of the body and lets it go back to the turn a drop into the eternal ocean Greeks saw the body as evil Greeks saw matter as evil so a good God could not create evil matter a good God could not even farm evil matter so between the high good God was a series of lesser God's or angels they called him eons they make Jesus one of these eons and so here we've separated God from his creation and then they said since spirit is good and mater is evil Jesus can't really be a human being because mater is evil so Jesus just looks like a human being when he walked by the seashore he doesn't leave footprints they would say the Spirit of Christ came upon the man Jesus at his baptism and left before the man Jesus died on the cross so they affirmed the deity of Christ but deny the humanity of Christ now in our day that heresy is just opposite Godspell Jesus Christ Superstar we're quite comfortable with a human Jesus we just bought as a society on a divine Jesus it's the same heresy I want to remind you first John for one through three says if you don't believe Jesus is fully God and fully man you are of the little a Antichrist spirit so this heresy not only denied the person of Christ but it said you're not saved by trusting Christ who died in your place on the cross oh no we have secret knowledge from an oral tradition that comes from Jesus and if you don't know the secret passwords you can't pass through these eons back to a high God after you die so now they've taken away from the purse of Christ and and the work of Christ and this was the major major heresy in the early century matter of fact my friends you do realize that the da Vinci Code is based on the Gospel of Thomas which is a heretical Gnostic gospel written in Egypt I had so many calls in that movie came out because Christians are so ignorant the Bible they can't defend themselves against a heresy that's so obvious that was just tacky I know it was meant to be I want you to turn with me now oh this is church you did bring your Bibles right we are going to put it up here but a Christian without a Bible is a naked Christian we're gonna put the screen behind me now I'm gonna try to show you these seven elements that make hermeneutics important and I'm gonna try to say things you've never heard before I hope you say to yourself where did that fool get all that because I'm trying to make you hungry what you could do and you could be as a Bible student you don't have to go to seminary you don't have to read Greek but you do that's become a turn the TV off you can't sleep on this book you can toss most that you've got to read it and you got to read it in context and you got to read it with thoughtful questions you've got to be looking up information and then suddenly the great joy is you're not knocked off your stability when these strange fads move to the church when these weird heresies developed when people around you who look so moral and squeaky-clean but when their theology does not fit scripture a warning light goes off now in verse one I am so thrilled I feel like jumping up and down the shouting whosoever friends I love whosoever I love as many as I love all who I don't know if I'm part of some elite but I am a part of whosoever and so are you this is the invitation of all people to trust in Jesus Christ Jesus died for the sins of the world the Bible clearly says as many as received him to them he gave the right to become the children of God the most famous one John 3:16 whosoever what believeth in him should not perish Romans 10:13 whosoever shall call and it's open its open the problem is unbelief not the love of God the problem is humans who are unwilling not the complete finished work of Jesus Christ whosoever believes now here's a word study I promise you most Christians have never done a word study on one of the main words in the New Testament the word belief now the writers of the New Testament are Hebrew thinkers writing in street Greek so where do you go for the definition of these terms you do not go to Greek poets you go to the Old Testament Greek translation called the Septuagint that was the Bible of the early church this is where these definitions need to come from so there's a Hebrew background and comes into a Greek word the Hebrew word you know it's a form of the word Amen DeMuth and he originally meant somebody who had their feet apart in a stable stance we we teach our of a football linemen to put their feet apart when they blocks they can't be easily knocked over now like all words it moves from a concrete uses to a metaphorical extension so this idea of someone as stable stance came to mean someone who's dependable someone who is loyal someone who is trustworthy well let me ask you do you feel like you're saved because you're dependable loyal and trustworthy I hope not we are not talking about our dependability our trustworthiness we're talking about God's we trust his trustworthiness we faith his faithfulness this Greek word can be translated as faith belief and Trust what major words is this whosoever believes this is a present active participle that means not just some place in the past you know I think we think if I pray this prayer somewhere in the past and I'm in no matter what friends if what you did in the past doesn't change and affect the decisions you make today that wasn't something real in the past Christianity is not a prayer I prayed twenty years ago that has no relevance in my life Christianity is a day-by-day relationship with the one who died in your place and hopefully you're becoming more and more like him whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ now quickly I'm trying I can't get through this whole text you know this when you see the detail I'm gonna do here but what I'm trying to do is whet your appetite for you doing this now the word Jesus is nothing more than the Aramaic form of the Hebrew word Joshua the word Hosea means salvation the the contracted form of the word you sang up there I am that's of course a form of the Hebrew verb to be we call it Yahweh we think that's the way it's pronounced by the way when we call God Jehovah he goes huh there are no J's and Hebrews you know that they're all wise so here is the covenant name for God with the name salvation you got to put a verb in there Yahweh saves Yahweh bring salvation Yahweh is salvation so the name Joshua is exactly the name of Jesus remember Matthew 1:21 the angel said now usually angels don't name children the angel said you shall call his name because he will save his people from their sins now this is the affirmation of the early church I personally be this was the baptismal formula and baptismal affirmation of a person's belief in Jesus Christ I believe that Jesus Jesus of Nazareth Jesus the carpenter Jesus the one crucified for treason by Rome this Jesus is the Messiah the word Christ is nothing more than the Greek word Messiah our anointed one which relates back to the Hebrew word Messiah which was the promise coming one of the line of David that will bring salvation and hope to the people of Israel and the people of the world that Jesus Christ is born of God this is the same word born as in John 3:16 begotten a modern Bernice this this is that one unique and only one who is born of God now this is a I know this is you're gonna say why you bring this up I hope you check me and if you have questions ask some of these who have theological background they can show you the books because we need to delve a little bit deeper in this not reading the Bible so fast we don't think about the words and the grammar and the structure and the meaning and the implication that this one verse one clause would say to the people of that day this is a perfect passive form perfect means something happen in the past and comes to a culmination passive means it was done by an outside agent we cannot be saved ourselves this is a beautiful combination that humans must believe and receive but it is God who calls them amen you can't come to Jesus because you had a bad day you can only come to Jesus if the Spirit of God touches you John 6:44 and 65 no one comes to the Father unless the Holy Spirit draws them God draws now the question is does he draw some or draw all does he draw a summer draw all he's got to initiative but this way human beings are not initiators in the spiritual realm they're responders God initiates we respond the one who is born of God nice little next little phrase loves and the word my new American Standard has child in parenthesis I was in Gladewater Texas a while back and I asked the question what are these italicized words mean in your Bible and this person raised their hand and said oh those are the words the Holy Spirit really wants to emphasize no those are the words that are not in the Greek text and are supplied for an English reader so what are we saying here loves the child born of him I think this is talking about Jesus here could it be talking about the believer it could be but I think this is talking about Jesus God the Father love the son the Gnostics tried to separate the father from the son but the gospel merges the father in the son amen this is the idea of one United divine essence in three eternal personal manifestations so here we have the one who is born of God now verse two but you look at it please that your Bible on the screen verse two this first along the first John 5:3 repeats one of the major themes at first John love God's love is expressed by ongoing love for others and obedience don't tell me you love God and live like the world first John speaking to you don't tell me you love God and hate your neighbor six people in first John we're that Christians who claim this or that and John says if you do that or believe that you're a liar and the truth is not in you you mean they're liars in the church yes there are that's my chapter two verse 19 says they went out from us because they were not of us they used our vocabulary they used our fellowship but they used it for their own personal agenda and this is saying that love is the marker the one thing it's Satan cannot counterfeit he counterfeited everything even the Trinity in Revelation one thing Satan cannot counter fate is love it's the mark of God and it's the mark of those who know God now just just a point here I want to kind of emphasize this notice the evidence of a true believer now think of me number one he loves God as verse one number two he loves God's child that's Jesus verse one number three he loves God's children that's verse two he obeys you mean love is spelled OB e why yes and then number five he overcomes the world and that's verses five and six how do you know the mark of a true believer you just have it because you see is there were those who are claiming to be true believers and because of their theology and because of their immoral lifestyles and because of their tearing up the fellowship first John the aged of ah so said no no I put it this way I want you to really think what I'm saying eternal life has observable characteristics it is not a ticket it is not a fire insurance policy it's the beginning of an intimate relationship where the goal of Christianity is not heaven when we die but Christ's likeness now so others can go to heaven with us when we die notice verse 3 for this is the love of God that we keep his Commandments now this is a genitive form of we're not sure here is it the Greek is not clear it could be our love for God or it could be God's love for us now John is noted as someone who has purposeful ambiguity and many times he puts two things together that you can't tell which he means because he wants them both to apply so is that my love for God or God's love for me that causes me to keep the commandments yes yes that is certainly true and notice what what do you mean keeps the commandments well I think we've got to realize that love is not a drippy gooey emotion love is an action word not I say this in front of James and I'm not talking about you okay just know that there were some students that drove me crazy I mean their personality types oh my I've had more fellowship in bars that I'm having some my students I mean it was just just a conflict but I want to tell you this when I saw them and I chose to spend time with them there was no way that I told Jesus I love you more than spending time with his children who irritated me and treating them with love and care people were friends with me be friends with anywhere but because we're in the church the goal of Christianity hear me church hear me the goal of Christianity and the work of the Spirit in the life of the believer is for the health and growth of the body of Christ this is why Western individualism is so dangerous and negative to the corporate orientation of Scripture we are together we are a body we are a building we are a field we live together or we die together no lone ranger Christians no you cannot worship God all the time in a deer stand no you can now a little bit us word Commandments this is interesting as Christianity have some Commandments absolutely may I say to you the goal of the New Testament is not no Commandments the goal of the New Testament is writing the commandments on our heart not on a law but on our heart that we might love God from the inside out now those of you know your Bible what I've just done is the New Covenant of Jeremiah 31 31 through 34 there is still God like God wants to change you in such a way that others and your family friends and co-workers see such a difference in you that they want to know how can you be happy in the midst of this how can you have peace in the midst of this how can you keep this your attitude positive in a situation because they need to know that something has made a difference in your life not just where you park your car at 11 o'clock on Sunday these commitments matter of fact when Jesus said Matthew 11:29 take this yoke upon you and lean on me for I am meek and lowly at heart the word yoke is the ribbon a word for Commandments there are some New Testament Commandments there are some New Testament guidelines so I think we need to deal with that if we could okay I want to look quickly at this little phrase overcomes the world this is by the way do you ever buy Nike tennis shoes this is the word Nike this is the word victory now how does the believer overcome the world what does that mean well first Jesus has overcome the world and because he has overcome the world and we abide in him we are Victor's that doesn't mean we doesn't don't struggle that doesn't mean we don't cry that doesn't mean we don't need to pray it just means in him we have already overcome I heard somebody one time say a good definition of preaching is telling Christians what they already are in Christ and I like that I think that's good now notice here overcomes the world now the word world this is the word cosmos is used in different ways in in Paul it often means the planet or the people of the planet but in John particularly in John particularly in first John when John uses the word world he's talking about human society organized and functioning apart from God and just take a minute I think many of the things we enjoy as modern people are wonderful but when they become ultimate they become evil let's just think for a minute education education is wonderful but can education bring you a happy life I've known some really stupid mean and unhappy phd's what about government can government bring priests friends we cannot vote the kingdom of God in I don't care what your political party is ultimately men with power get corrupted and women to government can't solve our problems thank God for a government that allows us to be free thank God we have a freedom and willing to worship the Lord here thank God for that the government can't solve our problems what about medicine if you just had the right medicine just how to peel I think the worst thing in the world would be to live 900 years thank God for medicine but medicine can't bring joy and happiness in peace friends these things are all good but when they become ultimate when they become the goal they become evil for John the world were those things apart from Jesus that made people feel like they were secure and happy and independent that's exactly what we do not need now would you look at your Bible just for a moment at the end of verse 4 is the word our faith this is it defines what the victory is our faith do you know and hope you'll check me on this that the noun form of the word believe believe faith or trust the noun farm only appears here in all of John's writing this is the only place in the five books the word faith appears like this the noun form now you ask yourself why is that it maybe because John did not want people to depend on a doctrinal content this is what the Gnostics would have done they would have said we know what salvation is we know and because we know we don't have to live they separated justification from sanctification you cannot do that you cannot do that so I made a little list here our faith brings victory because it is linked to Jesus victory it is linked to our new relationship with God it is linked to the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit amen now the word faith is used in different ways sometimes in acts it says the faith in Jude verse I think it's verse three and 20 it says the faith once and for all given to the Saints so when it has the definite article it usually means a doctrinal content but in the gospel and in Paul it often means the personal trust that one has to put in Jesus Christ for Christianity to be valid so faith is both well I put it this way salvation nothing I'm saying salvation is a person to be welcomed truths about that person to be believed and a life like that person to be lived and my denomination is forever asking me Oh Bob which ones can I leave out and still go to heaven when I die do you hear the reductionism of an only belief only we believe heresy you are saved to serve you are not safe to get you are saved to serve the body of Christ you are saved for others not for yourselves you were gifting for the body not for yourselves spiritual gifts are not merit badges you can put on your collar and say look at me look what I do look what I am you are a servant with a towel that is meant to serve the body of Christ do you want to check a few verses on that I hope you look at first Corinthians 11 7 and 11 I hope you'll look at ephesians 4 11 and 12 my soul what we've done to christianity pray this prayer brother did you realize there is no sinner's prayer in the New Testament grew up all my life people say pray this prayer it's all you where is it give me example they say well it's the parable the Pharisee and the sinner no no both those are in the synagogue both those are part of the covenant community I am I have been so amazed as I have tried to think about this I do a lot of evangelism particularly overseas and people come to an aha moment it's not what they not a prayer if you can see it on their face you talk and you talk about Jesus you talk you can have him you can know him you can have peace and suddenly the fear and the anger it just changes I know people who've had one of these aha moments singing a song with lyrics quoting the eighth the Apostles Creed in a hospital room crying out to God in the middle of a night with with death and illness oh my god is looking for the smallest crack in the door of your want to to flood you with himself but he will not do it unless you open the door this is the revelation 3:20 deal we have to open the door he won't kick it down but he wants you to open it open it open it verse 5 Jesus is the Son of God now this is the content of our faith I don't get too technical but this is what we call a haughty Clause believe that believe this now in this context there are several things believe that Jesus is the Messiah believe that jesus is the son of the child of God believe that Jesus is the Son of God believe Jesus is the life the Zoe now these are the things we believe about this peasant carpenter killed from treason now friends it just got to come to a place in your life Jesus illy is really the greatest manipulator and liar and cheat the world has ever known or he is the Incarnate son of God and you must decide there's no middle ground he can't be a great teacher a wonderful person no no he's a liar or he's Incarnate deity we must decide Jesus is the Son of God and this is the one who came is what the Incarnation here he came in Bethlehem he is the only God man now what does it mean by water and blood well there's a big fight among theologians and I know there is I tend to think that in John 3 we're at Nicodemus it has to be you know born-again that probably the word water there has to do with physical birth versus new birth at baptism symbolic I think it's here here you wonder if this is talking about the acts in Jesus life could it be his baptism where God the Father spoke out of heaven this is my beloved Son in whom I'm well pleased could it be the Transfiguration where God spoke out of heaviness and my beloved listen to him could this be his death on the cross and they shoved the spear in his side and water and blood came out I don't think we know exactly but it does say it is the spirit who testifies now what is the role of the Holy Spirit if you would go to sometime in the future I know not now probably John 16 verses 7 through the next few verses it says this here's what the Holy Spirit is supposed to do he is to convict the world of sin he is to draw the world to Jesus if they say hello he baptizes them into Jesus and then he forms Jesus in them now that is the role of the Holy Spirit so when we say here the spirit testifies and the Spirit is truth I think there could be different ways of looking at how this is done was it done through the witness of apostolic testimony was it done through the changed lives of those who have trusted Christ I'm not sure if I answer that but aren't you glad there is an internal witness of the Holy Spirit that's one of the ways we know we're saved the Holy Spirit speaks to our spirit Romans 8 of the Spirit of Truth convinces us that we are part of the people of God not because we don't spit dance or chew but because we trusted Christ amen that was a you don't do that here okay I want to go for a minute but I see my time is counting down notice where it says verse 9 if we receive the testimony now there are four kinds of ifs in the New Testament in English we just have the word if and they're all conditional but friends if you don't know this you're gonna really miss misinterpret some text these first-class conditional sentences are assumed to be true not to reality always but to the author's perspective I'm never the one that got me so much is the Romans 8:31 if God be for you who can be against you and I don't know about you but you know there's things in my life I'm so embarrassed of there are thoughts that I have I'm so embarrassed of there are things I've done in the past I'm so embarrassed of and you the devil says to you what you can't be a Christian look what you did look what you said look what you thought and hear the Bible says if well friends that's a first-class condition since God loves you who can be against you now once you know that grammatical construction that's an affirmation not a doubt and there are four of these I've tried in my commentaries online to identify every conditional sentence in the New Testament and I hope if if you're a Sunday school teacher for sure you need to check the IFS amen amen Bob will do it right that he has we received the testimony of men what's that Apostolic witness John's preaching the internal witness of the Holy Spirit the testimony of God is greater and he God the Father has testified concerning his son so what are we talking about here where they've been the baptism this is my beloved son may have been the Transfiguration I'm not sure which God has affirmed this is my son know him listen to him come to him and he has a testimony in himself noticed in verse 10 he has made him a liar there are six people six people inside the church that first John says is a liar and does not know God example one who hates his brother that's not no God I don't tell me how much you love God and hate your brother John's gonna say how can you love your brother unloved your brother who you've seen and you claim to know God whom you haven't seen old friends that this book this is a hard-hitting book you take this real seriously not only do you get assurance in one way you get real struggles and others real warnings than others because he has not believed God has given us eternal life now I'm gonna pick up on just something I'm gonna do next session this is the text that deals with the unpardonable sin or the sin unto death and many Christians uh I was kidding you during the seminar when there's a full moon everybody calls the pastor with strange questions we almost want to put it on the answering machine for the full moon and I've gotten so many questions I think I've committed the unpardonable sin it always at 3:00 between 3:00 and 5:00 that's when they do it and my standard answer is if you think you've committed the unpardonable sin you haven't done it you hear us said if you're worried about doing it you haven't done it so what is the unpardonable sin on the sin of death friends I believe it is the S it only can occur in the presence of great light the Pharisees knew who Jesus was but called called him the devil it only can occur in the place of Christian preaching Christian teaching where there is a atmosphere of gospel truths and yet people turn away from those gospel truths I believe every sin can be forgiven with repentance and ongoing a faith every sin except the sin of unbelief the unpardonable sin is to reject Jesus Christ to say i don't believe i don't i don't agree anymore i don't know what i did in the past now people is Baptist we are always nervous about we call it once saved always saved I feel very uncomfortable with that because I believe salvation is a personal relationship if that relationships ever ceases that salvation ceases but it doesn't cease because you don't tithe exactly ten percent and it doesn't cease because you miss Church - two days last year and it doesn't cease because you dropped your Bible four times once in the toilet see how crazy are we we're all nervous are we really in have we done enough did we join the right group did we say the right thing if you know Jesus you've done enough there are no perfect Christians there are none of us who don't struggle there are none of us who have arrived I believe that Jesus died for me and I've trusted him and I talked to him this morning when I grew up in the Baptist Church we used to say you got to have a personal relationship with Jesus I always wondered what does that mean now I've had people say to me Jesus walked in my room and and touch me and I get so angry I've been sick as a dog he didn't walk in my room I mean because I haven't seen him physically does that mean I don't have a personal relationship when I pray and read my Bible do verses light and the Bible floats do I hear voices mom no I don't I don't how can I say I have a personal relationship with someone I've never seen or heard when I'm alone and afraid and frightened and don't know what to do and I say Jesus help me Jesus forgive me Jesus give me direction Jesus I want to be pleasing to you that's a personal relationship now I hope church is not just a place you go to sell more stuff and your business I hope the church is not just a place you go to find people if they Domino's or something with I hope you're here because there's no place else you can be that you want to be with the people of God who lift up Jesus and love him they're trying to live more like him may God's assurance and the witness of his son sealed our hearts against a fallen world that's trying to draw us away from him may we pray for a moment lord I thank you for this opportunity to share this text to deal with the details that are here for the early and first readers but somehow have been closed to us because they read the Bible so little so quickly and so thoughtlessly Lord I pray you would stimulate your people to hunger for you to hunger for your only clear self revelation to help you know how to live in a world like ours to help you know what to believe so we won't be tricked by the haves and maybes of the world god help your people be the people of God that others may see it and want to know you too in Jesus name
