[Applause] my sisters and brothers all in faith and in struggle good morning this is the day that the lord have made and we should rejoice and be glad and put your hands together as we welcome another beautiful sunday morning here at the abyssinian baptist church we thank god for your presence today as we seek to lift up the name of jesus in our work and in our witness and now as we go forth in this worship experience let us collectively pray together the prayer that jesus taught his disciples when he taught them to pray by saying our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom the power and the glory forever and ever amen and now the choir will come without opening him certainly lord [Music] do you have a religion [Music] oh do you love ourselves as we prepare to be in conversation with god to thank god for all the ways god has brought us and taught us and led us and to ask god for strength for the living of the days of our lives so we might be a light and ambassadors for truth and the radical love of jesus that is his witness pass me not o gentle savior hear my humble cry while on others thou art calling do not pass us by we come this morning sisters and brothers all continuing to pray for members of our faith community who are in bereavement a longtime member of the abyssinian baptist church bernice rutherford transitioned on september 13th and her homegoing services will be tomorrow at the owens funeral home 216 linux avenue the final viewing at 10 a.m and the service begins at 11. we're praying for the family of our brother philip morrow who recently transitioned and then of course we're praying for the daughters of sister sheila lily who we've been praying for she transitioned yesterday at the calvary hospital in the bronx also remember in prayer the family of brother joseph moses and sister deja watson remember brother elijah brooks and sister lorraine vinton horn who sends her gratitude and love to the abyssinian community for the outpouring of love and support extended to her at the joint memorial service celebrating the life of her mother and aunt and then we come sisters and brothers all praying for our deacon thelma mason who celebrates her birthday today and while she continues in rehabilitation at the pinnacle nursing home her children are here to celebrate with her we thank god for their demonstrated love for her parents for their parents we also lived in prayer the chair of our trustee board trustee alexis thomas who was praying for her father who's critically ill dr marcella maxwell who we lifted last week and her daughter sister deborah young we continue to lift them in prayer sister pat feemster who requests prayer for her brother-in-law who has experienced death of several family members and our member alberta newton request prayer brother van durk fisher is battling cancer and is in hospice care our faithful usher sam lyons request prayer for his mother pamela lyons and also for deacon barbara hines who's in hospice care we're pleased to report that deacon al vinson had a successful surgery and deacon solomon is at home recuperating after a successful surgery we come now sisters and brothers all praying for our sisters and brothers in haiti and we stand in solidarity with them we come now bearing witness to the power of prayer not only is prayer as spoken words but his prayer has demonstrated love in action and so now our assistant minute pastor reverend eton hope young will come and lead us to the throne of grace [Music] let us pray lord as we lift our hearts and our spirits to the heels that come as our help god we recognize that our health our help and our strength only comes from you god in this moment of sacred conversation we'd ask that you would incline thine ear to hear the petitions that will go forth on today god we ask that you would allow for us to experience a divine healing healing in our bodies healing in our families healing in our communities oh god the names of those who were sick and firmed and bereaved have gone forth so god i ask that you would touch each and every one of those persons right now god i ask that you would bring comfort to their bodies god i ask that you would heal them from whatever illness is present god for those who are dealing with the loss of loved ones i ask that you would bring to their hearts a sense of comfort and a sense of peace that surpasses all understanding and god as we lift up the names of those who need you right now god we remember to pray for ourselves god we may or may not be sick in our bodies perhaps we are emotionally challenged perhaps we are financially challenged perhaps our realities are not as peaceful as we would like for them to be but god we know that you are god and god alone god we know that you are the author and the finisher of our faith god we know that you are our strength we know that you are our rock we know that you are our divine protection so god we call upon you right now to meet us at the very point of our need to be to us all that we need you to be right now and goddess we lift up ourselves before your throne of grace god we remember our brothers and sisters across this world who were challenged by poverty challenged by war challenged by leaders who are more invested in themselves than in the interests of the people god we ask that you would allow for a remnant to rise up oh god to meet the needs of the people around this world god we pray for our brothers and sisters in haiti god we pray for those who are still stuck in afghanistan and trying to find their way out oh god god i ask that you will remember our brothers and sisters in ethiopia who are facing an ethnic genocide god i ask that you will touch us right now that you would heal us that you would allow for us to experience a divine wholeness that can only be given from you god in this moment we ask that you would shelter us under your wings oh god that you would envelop us in your divine love and that you would give us a peace a sense of comfort and a faith that remains strong with everything around us seems to be standing for just a moment the american baptist women's ministry is a christ-scented ministry with a commitment to encourage and empower women and girls to serve god we are a community of faithful mission-minded women engaged in worship and service today they are in rally and are so happy to be in church we're happy to have you in church and in addition they honor the memories of their past members sister jacqueline carton wow sister gwendolyn jones sister dolores jeffries sister brucey smith they say they are gone but not forgotten this past year has caused a disruption in our local activities but we continue to support the following programs they have a love gift a national support overland planting hope gift of giving world day of prayer international ministries missionaries and programs around the world workshops domestic violence prayer and meditation and through the national office they have been active during this pandemic so we thank you as they address issues like sex trafficking domestic violence homelessness immigration economic empowerment cross-cultural relationships and the united nations sustainable development goals they're asking for our continued these are deacon thelma mason's children and they came to celebrate her birthday and we're delighted and uh y'all make sure your daddy's all right he's been in bad shape since your mama ain't been home man pray for him digging keels we're glad to see you back feeling better i saw it there he is right there and beloved i want you to know this ministry cannot go forward without good deacons it's just impossible and deacons you have been good and loyal and strong and deacon kiels has been the leader in our sick ministry and communion and we're delighted to see him looking so good so brother want you to know that's true that's real so i am um i'm delighted matter of fact uh lefredrick you need to go see londell and tell islanddale here this morning where is it yeah you need to talk to the friendly frederick and cook and you need somebody in that kitchen that can cook right now [Applause] the frederick can throw down yeah we gonna now you know don't don't don't get too crazy because lionel londell has been 30 how many years 35 27 almost 30 years that we've been supporting lying down and londell has been supporting us so let's keep that in mind yeah talk to the freddie the boy can overdid it a little bit friday night i went down to the harvard club and the president of ghana nana ado dankwa okofu i do was the keynote speaker he had with him apostle professor opoku anaya who is the chairman of the board of trustees he had his finance minister and they all came to celebrate the building of the national cathedral of ghana it's the national cathedral of ghana which will house the bible museum of africa and the biblical gardens of africa now i invited the president to come and worship with us he said that he would the architect is the same gentleman who built the national museum of african culture and history history and culture and uh it's going to celebrate christianity in africa and i think it's a wonderful project and i wanted to mention it to you i'll put more information on our website um but it was a great gathering one of our member sister teresa clarke of um [Music] africa.com invited me to come down and you know i want a closer relationship between africans and america and africans on the continent uh and i continue to work on that as we go forward so dearly beloved please uh keep that in mind those of you watching follow up those of you two weeks i want to begin at verse 21. matthew 16 verse 21 we continue our discussion of the church why we want you to be followers of the lord jesus and why we want you to be a part of our fellowship in the church matthew 16 beginning at verse 21 this is the king james translation from that time forth began jesus to show unto his disciples how that he must go unto jerusalem and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and be raised again the third day then peter took him and began to rebuke him saying be it far from thee lord this shall not be unto thee but he turned and said unto peter get thee behind me satan thou art an offense unto me for thou savorist not the things that be of god but those that be of men then said jesus unto his disciples if anyone will come after me let them deny themselves take up their cross and follow me for whosoever will save their life shall lose it and whosoever will lose their life for my sake shall find it for what is a person profited if they shall gain the whole world and lose their own soul or what shall a man or woman give in exchange for their soul for the son of man shall come in the glory of the father with his angels and then he shall reward everyone according to his works verily i say unto you there be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the son of man coming in his kingdom may the lord bless unto us this reading of the word and sanctify it to the good of our souls let's pray together beloved as we consider the text and the pericappy go home read matthew 16 again and [Music] i was on thank you all by the way for your text messages and uh phone calls regarding the good morning america piece i appreciate that i told one of my friends that uh the thing i was most nervous about was uh how i would look on tv with a bald head you know and then i got on and i was you know i'm thinking about this you know how we are and then this slim tall good-looking dude walks in the room that's uh the host what's it ain't tj t.j he clean as the board of health young you know sliding in there hey brother butts what's happening i said oh lord here we go i'm got old my headball and this young man is and then at the end of the show you know i was checking him out now you know he's clean you know i checked out that that that vest and i had to i had to back up a bit because i had to check myself i tell you i tell you all that uh there are some deadly sins some deadly ones and one of the greatest of them is jealousy [Applause] it's a smoker it really is it's a smoke jealousy man you know you see somebody with something you want you wonder how they got it and you want it and it eats you up on the inside man it's a smoke you gotta watch that jealousy thing it is it's one of the seven deadly ones and and as i think about that you know i i got uh i got caught up here in seventh heaven with that completely yes and there's a listen beloved there's a metaphysical war going on a metaphysical walk i mean there's there's there's something happening around us that i want more and more of us to be aware of is spiritual and um let's do it this way every faith just about particularly the abrahamic faiths you know the abrahamic faiths of judaism christianity and islam abraham is the father of all of those and they all place a special emphasis on the presence of evil listen evil it's real now i have preached to you before about evil and jealousy can give rise to some evil stuff i appreciate you poor by evil and for us in the old testament new testament tradition that we follow evil really began we followed it from isaiah with the fall of the archangel lucifer from heaven and lucifer the bright and morning star did y'all hear what i said that's how he was known lucy was a bad boy he was an archangel he was the chief angel i've told you this story many times and what got next to him was jealousy and who was he jealous of the only one he could be jealous of was god i've often told you for those of you who sit in high positions be careful of those who are around you satan [Music] lucifer became jealous of god and that's why you see in revelation that passage there was war in heaven he said the dragon and his angels fought against michael god and his angels and lucifer lost because you can't beat god no matter how hard you try [Applause] lost and you see in isaiah and you see in revelation that god threw him out of heaven that's where i get that little thing and told him where he could go that's where he sent it threw him out of heaven and jealousy listen to me brothers sisters all of us jealousy made him shake his fist at god as he failed if i can characterize it that way down to the earth and say i will get you in other words this battle this war is to be continued and the book says that it rages down on the earth and satan is the prince of this world the battle rages down on the earth today and how is lucifer satan going to get to god through you through you through you brother through you satan has everything else he got money he got men he got women he got power he told jesus didn't he he said if you fall down and worship me i'll give you the kingdoms of this world one cosmic phantasmagoria he laid it out for him who else could do that but god that tells you how tough satan is and so he pledged to get even with god but one thing lucifer knew and he knows that his time is short and he understands now better than anybody else that lucifer and all of us your arms are too short to box with god i hope y'all listening to me jealousy and the one thing that god cherishes more than anything else that lucifer satan does not have is your soul it's your soul it's your soul what does it profit a man or a woman to gain the whole world and lose their soul and satan is working every day over time if you follow time over time to get your soul and he has all kinds of temptations and tricks to pull you in and now let me shift for a moment back to who i am as a black man talk to you in the vernacular of black folk i've told you over and over again that one of the highest expressions of who we are is defined as soul i went to soul food didn't i i went through soul music didn't i i went through soul train there's a motor transportation i told you all of that and we used to hold that up as the highest expression of our cultural uh contribution soul love peace and [Applause] and so if there's one thing that could break the back of the black man and black woman it is to capture and decimate their soul his soul murder and beloved you see it all around you all of those things that we used to hold up so high and celebrate are now being pulled apart the very essence of family life and the very essence of our wonderful music you know there are illustrations all over beloved of how people try to steal our soul from place to place the soul is the seed of our joy restore unto me david cried out he had gone through hell the joy of my salvation give me back my soul and beloved your soul is attacked not just cooperatively uh as a people it's attacked individually it makes you question god yeah jesus did that major question on the cross why have you forsaken me now i'm going to pause for a minute and talk about your soul and why it's so important to strengthen and nourish and ensure remember that word insure your soul there's a church over on 120 [Music] 4th street it's between frederick douglass boulevard and no it's saint nicholas avenue and frederick douglass was called the sole saving station i'm not sending you over there what i'm suggesting is that that name that name represents what have i been preaching about these last two sundays the church we are the sole saving station because it is our responsibility not just mine delivered all of our responsibilities to ensure that our sisters and brothers and our souls are safe and insured against the destruction of the devil and all around you you see what happens to men and women rich and poor educated and not educated whose souls have been destroyed suicide goes up drug abuse rages depression robs us of our joy and that's why we have to put this emphasis on saving our souls and the church through christian education through good singing through preaching through teaching has to be responsible for making sure that our souls are safe it's the only thing about life that can be eternal your car's going to break down your house will be deteriorated you'll even lose your life and you insure all of those but what insurance have you placed on your soul mama died and you loved mama she was the source of your strength in life you haven't been able to get over it what's wrong with you you need to have a little talk with jesus in this world you will have tribulation but the lord said be of good cheer for i have overcome the world mama's not the only one who's going to die it might have been your husband it could have been your brother you're going to have these challenges in life and beloved the thing that keeps us stable is a balanced and nurtured and encouraged soul i was sitting there thinking a moment ago about my own mother and father how good they were to me what good people they were they've been uh they've transitioned now years ago but my my faith and my soul is anchored in the lord and i'm able to press on knowing that one day i'm going to have to come to that house myself and i'm trying to say to all of you who are out there listen to what the lord said i want you to watch this and i'm through peter y'all been following matthew 16. the first encounter jesus says who do the people say that i am you remember that and uh peter is the first one to jump up i told you oh bad peter you know be careful you know y'all who talk so fast peter jumped up and he said you man you are the christ the son of the living god and gee what did jesus say said flesh and blood did not reveal that to you but the spirit of god the spirit speaks to you it speaks to your soul sometimes you don't even understand you don't know why you were crying when they were singing that song that may not have been one of your favorite songs maybe it was just the way they laid it out but it brought tears or made you clap your hands or jumped to your feet why because the spirit was speaking to your soul so then look what happens in the next instance jesus says if you're going to follow me pick up your cross then he says i got to go to jerusalem i'm going to die they're going to take me up on charges i told you about the pharisees and sadducees and he said they're going to crucify but i'ma rise again on the third day and then what does peter do he jumps up again watching those of you who run your mouth to me he jumps up again and what does he say he said oh no that ain't gonna happen no we're not gonna let that happen it can't go down like that you're not gonna get crucified it's not going to happen and then what does jesus say it's the flip of what he said earlier he said get thee behind me shape first he said flesh and blood didn't do this but the spirit of god now he says get thee behind me satan for you are not thinking the way of god you're thinking the way of men and what i want to tell you beloved now in that same instance listen the moment you think that you got it straight with god the moment you think that people are praising you because you hid it right and god spoke to your soul satan is right on your heels don't bring that self-righteous stuff up in here satan is right on your heels he flipped peter just like that and he flipped him again because jesus said you're going to deny me oh no no no no satan gets in your soul and that's why you need to ensure your soul you need to take care of it and that's why the church becomes important no beloved it's not that you're not going to sin it's not that your heart is not going to break it's not that you're not going to deal with depression and all of those things it is just that there's a soul-saving station so that when those things come upon you you have something you can lean back on what have i to dread what have i to fear what leaning on the everlasting arms i have blessed peace do you know what you're saying with my god so near what leading you've got something to lean on that doesn't make you a wimp and it certainly doesn't make any other religious practice any more important than yours is all of us have to deal with the devil all of us have to deal with the pressures of the soul and so here we go it's getting behind me and there's lucifer he's battling for your soul and he's going to dangle stuff in front of you oh yes he is and you're going to get weak from time to time yes you are jealousy that is that man's wife leave her alone i know she used to be my girl i know honey [Applause] but that's what she used to be she's not your girl anymore you mad because another brother i saw the beauty in her the glory in her the intelligence in her and he swept up while you were out there playing the field [Applause] now leave her alone jealousy jealousy how do you get that position you're not supposed to be in that position jealousy you see what i'm saying that's devil that's evil and beloved all of us none is good but god and all have fought and fallen short of the glory but what is it but how do we overcome this if we are caught up in this what else does the church have to say about our sinful behavior our uh ragged uh lifestyle what what what is it we know we're in the church what saves our souls it's something called grace it's an unmerited favor it's a gift from god that's why i stay close to the church one thing have i desired of the lord that will i seek after that i may dwell in the house of the lord all the days of my life it's called grace i'm not worthy but the love of god shines its light upon me and i strive every day beloved to battle satan why you talk about him because i know him so well and it's the grace of god that has showered itself upon all of us and so when we recognize the grace in our lives we get better we get stronger we're not as jealous as we used to be let me start in where i started so i'm on the program and i'm talking and i'm talking to this brother and i'm checking out this vest he got on ron you know i know ron ron sent me a note saying he tells me where i can get the vest from and uh he you know and so i you know butts this brother is 30 years younger than you you know what is wrong with you i'm checking so i had to i said man who is your tailor you know at least let me try to get a vest similar you know but the jealousy can beat you down you laugh at me that's all right i don't care but think about yourself and it's not just jealousy that eats up your soul it's the depression and the bereavement it's the sadness it's the injustice you know it's all of that it's the heartbreak of children bad marriages bad relationships they chew your soul up but i'll tell you one thing bo and camaro your mama see you on her birthday that strengthens her soul see what i mean and even though she may be struggling with an illness right now she'll get better she'll be stronger and for all of you out there listening to me those of you on live stream come on back to the soul saving station so listen so we can put our arms around each other we can pray together we can jump up we can sing together we can be joyous don't let this world and this pandemic and the gossip of men and women keep you from your church it is your soul saving yeah i know we got to be careful but we are doing the best we can we are wearing masks we're washing our hands we're doing all the things we're putting in infrared whatever it is sister but we're not going to let satan get thee behind you say this pandemic is evil he's trying to push us apart and especially for the black man and woman in america i admire this live stream we're going to continue to use it but don't use that as an excuse not to come into the house and give god some praise and if you don't know jesus pick up your cross and follow him and he will encourage your heart he will in he will uplift your soul he will encourage you and you'll be able to meet any challenge even that day when you walk through the valley of the shadow of bereavement i'm talking about depression i'm talking about jealousy and talking about all of those things revenge that you got you want to get even with somebody and what they did to you was wrong to be sure you got to let that go cause it'll eat you up fast and it will eat them don't you hear what i'm saying i'm trying to help all of us to save our soul [Music] save our souls [Music] so i thank children are downstairs you know our sunday school teachers are back and uh we're building so i hope by the time we get through this last quarter we'll be full again but we have people watching us on
