Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
a necropsy (til, a necropsy is when an autopsy is performed on animals other than humans) was performed on both sham and secretariat when they died. shams heart weighed in at 18lbs, which is huge for a horse (~2x average). some call a horses heart size the "x-factor" and it seems to make sense to me. a huge heart can pump more oxygenated blood through the body and improve performance. Secretariat's heart weighed in at 22lbs.
paraphrased from Secretariat's wiki page#Death).
Secretariat not only won the triple crown but set speed records for all three races that still stand today.
He indeed is the greatest horse that has ever lived!!
ESPN did a special on Secretariat that was really well done.
Here is the second part of the special. It provides some context about the popularity of Secretariat, and how absolutely mind-blowing his win was with the public.
The reporter talking about Jack Nicklaus' story is especially touching.
I know nothing about horses, but I can see the attraction after watching that. That was amazing to see. Thanks for the link.

The Usain Bolt of horses
So, if this horse is so good, like, so much better than others, can (could) you still bet on it? Would it actually bring any profit with the odds one would expect?
I was a little kid when this happened and knew nothing about horse racing, and I distinctly remember being captivated by the large headline in the newspaper and the accompanying photo.
