20 and we're gonna continue working on this elf today um first need to do some housekeeping and share the stream on facebook all right so please bear with me one and share it to a page all right hey for you how are you doing okay so um every time i stop and start a sculpt i like to reevaluate and kind of look and see where i left off and where i need to go so that's kind of what i'm doing in my brain right now and yeah i just kind of need to reevaluate some of the shapes here hello hello welcome welcome i hope you all have are having wonder some what am i trying to say having wonderful holidays had a good christmas if you're in the in the us and celebrate that um let's see his head is quite dense but that's okay all right um i was thinking about putting uh making his eyelashes or an outline at least go all the way around his eyes and adding a little bit more um you can kind of see a hint of a line right there just for a lower eye bag or eyelid of some sort so i'm just going to try some stuff you are welcome mafory you are most welcome can't wait to see what you make in there okay so i do have this eyelash already your eyelids come on to select why are you selecting doesn't want to select there we go so i have two i have an eyelid and eyelash but i kind of want this to go all the way around so i'm going to hide this one and then draw some new stuff on there hey what's up neil thank you sir always appreciated okay so let's try this i'm gonna try just i i don't really do this very often where i make it go all the way around but i kind of want to try it just to see i'm gonna make it thicker than it should be and then i'll adjust it later yeah okay i need a smaller brush here if you get too close the lines will snap to each other so i start with them kind of further away and hopefully they won't snap there we go okay there we go thanks thanks so much i don't know how to say your name uh kutab is that how you say your name thank you so much okay so i think that will work for now yeah we'll try that they almost look like glasses right and then i can separate them i'm this this might not work and i might do something different hey what's up kev i may just try some that's weird that it's still stuck around oh there it goes refresh okay so one thing i was just talking to my my good friend steve james about this yesterday yesterday maybe the day before um that one of so i can't remember who said it somebody here on the live stream was like if you you can draw stuff and you can turn on the transparency button and it will just attach itself to whatever is visible so whatever uh sub tool you're working on and it will ignore whatever's transparent so now after having drawn these circles i'm thinking maybe i should have snapped these right to the eyeball rather than the skin around the eyeball so um say my name i said kutab is that how you say it that's how i would say it in english i guess um quick question how would you go about making a female style eyelash one have little lashes coming off using the dynamic thickness neil you couldn't really do that with dynamic thickness um i mean you you sort of could but it would be difficult with with those i will usually add thickness and then apply it and then extrude some out from the face you could turn it so it's sideways and so the thickness is going down instead of forward if that makes sense and you could do it that way so having some problems with bake high and low in zbrush export to substance painter uh mohabbat i i usually don't uh i usually don't bake inside of the zbrush so i can't really help you there um i use um i actually bake my stuff inside of substance painter so uh you can bring your high resolution and your low resolution in there and bake it over there that's that's what i would recommend okay so anyway um so with that being said let me see grab this color been oh you've been trying to do it with dynamic and it's just been a mess yeah because it's a you have to think about it's just a single-sided surface right so basically you could do just a single sided surface just a line like i've done with this one right so it's just a simple version of this but basically you would raise it up so yeah and like i said instead of it um instead of adding the thickness forward you could add it so it's down i i'd have to do it to show you i hope we can understand that but yeah a little different okay so let me hide these hide these there we go and okay let's adjust the thickness on all of these it's going to take a moment because i want it to be to kind of go from thick to thin i should probably turn on thickness get rid of my creases okay then i can go back and forth and kind of check and see make sure it's looking okay i want it to get quite thin down here okay did you all have a good holiday if you're celebrating we did we kind of celebrated a week early here because i had my grandson in town in town he was here so he's kind of the the youngest right now and still into that whole thing so we kind of celebrated both but it was good it was fun do reach topology and top again back to zbrush oh do you uv masters and and yeah uv masters is good in zbrush and it doesn't really matter where you do your uvs and re-topology it's interesting how it's like twisting as it's going around because it's just a single-sided mesh so let me look at it without anything else in the way i want to look at it from all sides i can turn double on too just to kind of see what it's doing hey what's up guys how you doing man yeah i need to practice that more too um i i haven't really done it too much um and i think it's because i just i'm so used to doing it my own my own way in my own places you know so i'm not used to having the opportunity to do it in zbrush so i haven't practiced it enough how are you guys so if you guys don't know guzz is a superhero he makes amazing amazing art with zbrush so uh if you don't know who he is go follow his stuff check him out he's awesome thanks for swinging by you guys hope you're doing well know about this i'm trying to decide if i like i like that or not i think i want them thinner maybe if i just make the thickness thinner hey cinna i'm doing well thanks let's see maybe a little thinner that that way yeah i don't know that's not too bad it's looking more like the concept this way i think could be rounder eyes though now that i have those in place yeah let's push those up in there it's very uh very tricky to manipulate these little lines like this and then go back and forth oh thanks sir all right okay let's build build this up like i was talking about earlier yep this is zbrush this brush is super subtle it's based on a brush by sk sk is another sculptor on here on this zbrush channel you know i think i need to be a little heavier with me the cloth brush oh if that's why it's not working gotta turn spotlight projection off i'm like why isn't that doing anything it's not that subtle hey andre how you doing how did your stream go so andre is another streamer he just barely started streaming on the pixel logic channel okay let's try that again see if it'll actually work this time there we go all right i just want a slow subtle buildup wait great awesome oh i'm glad you're streaming friend you're nervous oh yeah it's i still get nervous you know i don't even realize it until i'm done and i'm sweating you know i'm just like oh man so you're going to start doing it regularly my only suggestion is a little better lighting so we can see your gorgeous mug there we go i'm liking that let's get his little uh little tooth in there have you experienced light box not loading um are you talking about when you push comma like this not loading i'm gonna do it every week awesome oh and you're getting a desk light okay um yeah i'm not sure that's weird if that's not working i forgot kyle's like oh i didn't think you were streaming i guess i was going to take today off but i decided to stream anyway sorry kyle i'm streaming might as well might as well um before you i'm not sure why that wouldn't load um yeah if there's nothing here um yeah that's super strange i would i would reach out to um support at pixellogic.com and ask them or reinstall it maybe but i'm not sure why that wouldn't show up okay let's see what was i gonna do um oh let's get this let's get his tooth in there since he only has one and make it this color um could it oh that's that's true cat so um which tab do you have selected up here uh try try doing uh project right here or tool it should load up like this but if you're yeah if you're on an unpopulated tab that could be the reason but make sure you're on project you should have projects in here by default you wouldn't have this ruler one in here that's that's the one unless you have installed it um that's a good good call cat thanks for the suggestion uh yep that is guzz and if you would like this ruler project um you can always get it on my on my uh web page 3dcharacterworkshop.com i give that away for free but for you i know you have that one so it should be showing up if it scrolled over really far oh yeah that's true too okay i'm gonna solo this and whoops get rid of these creases now i'm kind of spoiled with the uh with the thickness that comes with dynamic subdivisions so even though this is a cube and i want to keep it as a cube and i can insert edges and things like that what i'm going to do instead though is i'm gonna get rid of everything and keep it a single sided surface oh that worked okay sweet so i'm just gonna hide all the stuff back there then um uncrease everything now this is super cool um the the the dynamic subdivision thickness modifier i don't know if you'd call it a modifier but the thickness option um so if i it it will support or it will recognize support loops so support loops are like a traditional um oh hey hey glenn how you doing man the gang's all here that's awesome finally got to watch you before 2020 gives out awesome well i'm glad you could swing by sir thank you so much so i'm a huge fan of glenn by the way southern graphics he's uh um yeah super super great sculptor so if you haven't heard of glenn go check him out gotta give a shout out to all the peeps that's awesome okay so what i was going to say is i can use this z modeler and use an insert insert edge like this and i can put it kind of close to the edge do it again on this side just kind of like traditional box modeling how you could do this you know insert support edges support loops and i'm going to put this one pretty close to the top now if i add dynamic thickness um i actually need to crank the thickness up then i'm going to turn on post subdiv and see now i have uh nice nice beveled edges so this is a an easy way to get beveled edges when i'm just using the dynamic subdiv modifier whatever you want to call that right right over here dynamic with thickness so what i'm really editing is this single-sided plane with some support loops and then when i add the modifier you know the dynamic subdivisions then it gives me these nice bevels super cool trick that i've been using a lot lately hey glenn awesome all right let's put that tooth back towards the mouth a little bit more yes thank you neil neil's my my streaming bot but he's actually a real person [Laughter] i'm lucky lucky lucky thanks neil all right i curve these eyebrows a little bit all right and then we'll make these glasses next after i get a little drinky drink all right it's funny how he's got these little stringy hairs in front of his ears i'm going to try and try and keep that and then these little stringy hairs popping out from the front right there i i'm trying to decide if i want to do those fiber mesh or not we'll see we'll see when it comes to it all right let's get those glasses in there first um let me use my cylinder insert multi mesh brush um let's reset this okay and we'll split this into its own and let's save it just in case there we go excuse me okay um so with these glasses i want to do the same thing that i just did with this tooth i just want to make it make it a single sided surface so i can add some thickness and it already does have thickness but it's a little bit more difficult to edit um and i want to bring like i'm i'm trying to make these uh the rims the brims whatever you want to call them and i can use these as the lenses right so in order to make the wires go around i'm going to duplicate this okay and i can use these edges but they're all in the same polygroup so i can hit this groups by normals and it's going to put anything past 45 degrees into its own polygroup but you'll notice it's not symmetrical so i can just go mirror and weld and it'll make it symmetrical now what i want to keep is the light green and delete the rest so let me hide this okay and hide the in interior i can turn on double so i can make sure that these rings are what i have okay and then delete hidden now so i can do thickness one of two ways i can do thickness like this because it automatically added thickness or um and that's that's completely fine i could do that or i could add thickness from the back to the front kind of like i was explaining to you neil so this is this is kind of how i would do those um eyelashes that you were talking about do the thickness in this direction rather than front to back but i want to do it front to back so because i want that thickness to be consistent but i want the thickness to go from kind of thick to thin around the edges here so to do that i can just go to my z modeler brush and do extrude and polygroup all that will kind of give me rims like this but like i said i want to dynamically generate the thickness so i'll keep everything or i'll delete everything except for this this blue right here so let's go to select lasso and just isolate that delete the rest i know it's kind of a roundabout way of doing this whole thing um and now i can add thickness to this this way so now it's going from back to front and the reason i can do that now is or the reason i wanted to do that is so i can i guess that adjust things from forward to like i can make it i want to make it a little bit oval this way and i want to kind of curve it more along the face like this i don't want it to be colliding with his nose a lot smaller maybe push him back a little bit it's like because i do want to make the metal that goes up and over his nose kenny that is the truth sir it's all about roundabout ways of doing things okay let's get a color on it okay and we can now uh grab our lenses and kind of do the same thing just kind of move them into place maybe not so thick something like this i just want to see me figure out the curl of that beard um now yeah i was thinking about that too and i'll either draw it already curled that way or i i can use that bend the bend deformer and try it that way as well but we'll see i'm not sure yet okay i'm gonna fill this where am i going and then we can do that gradient kind of is that a yellow no there we go okay just kind of fill that in like that shadowbox i don't really i'm not a huge fan of shadowbox um it's okay but it gives me kind of um the geometry that it gives is is kind of difficult to edit in my opinion i like it but i don't really use it too much okay now for these again i want to do the thickness of you know dynamic thickness so let's do um auto no uh group by normals mirror and weld isolate the front delete the rest and there's our thickness all right kind of edit edit this a little bit to get it even out in there a little better and to give it kind of a rounded surface um well it looks like it's a little too thick but that's this is why i love this thickness slider because i can adjust it on the fly anyway i'm just like light lightly inflating the surface so um when we if we render this out it will catch the light better okay i think i want to move them back even more now since these are i want to move them together i can turn on this transpose all selected sub tools and clear everything so it's it's uh this kind of transparent looking then you can hold down control plus shift and add pieces to your selection so i just added the rims and the lenses now i can pull them both back in space together hey from brazil hello welcome ah maybe not that far back because it's kind of going into the skin i don't really want that so i might just leave them where they are i think that'll work because otherwise i'd have to raise it up and then pull it back it's just kidding i don't want to adjust the skin to compensate you've just been watching you talking about doing gradient on the sirloin videos nice nice nice yep uh gradients add a ton they really do like for example with this nose just to make it look a little bit better whoops let's uh where are those lenses there they are what is with this polysphere it looks like i have a random polysphere just hanging out in there okay so like with this nose i could grab this color and the airbrush the soft brush and just take it down to and just paint just paint some ambient occlusion in there and then it just all of a sudden looks a little better so uh it's this is not blender this is zbrush okay this is a pixelogix uh twitch and youtube and facebook channels and pixlogic they are the makers of zbrush okay so let's make uh grab this lens here and we can um insert a cube yep no worries okay that's not what i want to do i want to reset this and then snap it into place there we go and we'll split this how might one make a stylized character that's ready for animation so there's a few um after basically you make your high resolution character first which is what i'm doing and then you take it to um you can either do it in zbrush or somewhere else but you have to do re-topology which is rebuild the surface topology to make it ready for animation deformation ready essentially and then you do uvs if it's for a video game you do uvs and then you can bake maps there's a lot to it if you're doing it for film then you use uvs but you use something called udems and displacement maps instead of normal maps is what you usually use for games there's a lot it's a it's a it's a really big question okay now again i just want to get rid of the everything that's not this front face and then we'll give it thickness same way that way i can easily adjust the thickness there we go okay and again it will use some support edges so i can put in a loop there i'm going to bend this down just to be that make that earpiece when doing a character's mouth you sculpt it closed then just open it by using mass and moving it no um uh usually i will just i would just push it in like as i'm sculpting i'll push it in and then i'll close the mouth is what that's kind of my my regular workflow these days if you want to watch me actually do it you can watch last week's episode on pixellogix youtube channel you can see how i did it okay let's see just putting some support loops in here okay you plan on finishing this character leaving it as a bust usually i i leave for those these live streams i do just bus and i save the full characters for my course i mean i have done a few full characters on here a while ago but yeah that's typically what i like to do um have you switched over entirely to gizmo 3d or do you still use the transpose line the only time i really use the transpose line anymore is when i'm bending a line but other than that i use the gizmo 3d uh let's see here yeah it's just so much easier for me to use than the transpose line i i also i take that back i do use the transpose line for posing sometimes as well because it it kind of looks and acts more like a temporary bone to pose with so i like i like using it for posing as well okay that's a little too much just trying to sneak this down just enough where i can get the glasses to actually kind of be functional and not inner penetrate that ear there we go i think that works i'm not sure if i'll even add that middle wire because i think it would just distract from the design so i think i'm just going to leave it as is right there all right okay let's add some or the band to the hat we can do that how i usually do that is just duplicate what's there and delete whatever is not the band so looks like it goes up about this far right here so i can use the slide and do edge loop complete and just slide it down to where i think that hat band should live be about that thick and then delete the rest and the bottom two i actually like saying that like delete whatever is not the thing that you want i don't know why it's okay there we go weird it's getting weird display issues there we go okay so now we have this this hat band looks like it's kind of peeking through down here and then we can just do what we've always done and add thickness turn off post subdiv and add in some support edges first i want to raise this front up because it's sticking down below the brim of the hat so insert put an edge up there and one down here and it'll give me a much better uh a nice beveled edge i'll grab this color and fill it like that and i think we could use a little more thickness this is why i love the thickness like like if i were to extrude this i would have to go in there and like you know figure out how to add thickness without scaling because usually moving along the surface normals will scale it weird and being able to just adjust the thickness is so much more powerful mo betta there we go scooch it up yep i gotta scooch this up scooch is a word right there we go all right so now we can just kind of fake do some gradient i love how the gradients are i mean it's it's in shadow right but it also looks kind of like a like a black velvet with green highlights or something like that which i like a lot so grab the brim of this hat let me see sure we're showing it yep scooch scooch on up all right so we can grab this dark green brown somewhere now you can hold c the letter c down on your keyboard and just kind of hover whoops i mean to do that um as long as your ring is showing okay um if if your ring is not showing and you hit c you're just going to grab the color from the back canvas right here so you've got to make sure that you push z or z on your keyboard and make sure this ring is showing then you can just hover with the letter c over your image you can see the colors changing i'm not clicking anything i'm just hovering and so i'm looking for kind of a dark a dark green brownish there we go some maybe that right oh i had it there's so many colors in here you don't realize until you try and color pick out of there okay so with i'm just trying stuff out so with this on and since this is a single sided surface it's going to color both sides of this brim hey cason welcome to the stream all right so yeah that dark brim like that and then just kind of go up the sides of this i like the drawing is just add a bit of gradation gradation hey scraws in the walls is that how you say it welcome stream thanks doing my thing am i listening any music today i am um i've been kind of on an old 80s well i'm always on an old 80s like i don't know i like to listen to um back in the 80s it was called new wave it's like old wave now so it's just like um i don't know like the pesh mode and erasure and you know all those bands of the 80s that i loved as a kid all right so i'm going to do the same thing to this band oh you have been missing listening to the midnight not nice so the midnight is like new old music it's like they call it synth wave which is a lot like 80s synth um but it's it's kind of newer i like it a lot and then midnight is a really good example of it so i just want to continue that shading down into this hat band it's a little brownish that's okay i'm discovering a lot more bands that are kind of like the midnight you can so in spotify you can choose a band and then you can say listen to this band's radio and if you do it's kind of like pinterest you'll get this discovery system happening where you'll discover bands that are a lot like that band and discover songs that you like and some that you don't and so i'll just add the ones that i like and make a new radio out of that and just kind of grow it from there it's pretty cool okay and with this tooth i want to add just a little bit of this yellow shadow to it hey andrew is this the new version of zbrush yep this is uh 2021. i think they've came out with a a newer update than the one i have right now but this is pretty new okay that's good his ears are feeling a bit big now that i have his glasses and everything in place there we go 20 21.5 thank you oh it's it looks like it's blocked from my little bar up there you can't see it nice that's a good one okay so it's kind of i'm i'm trying to decide if like i said if i want to do the hair in with geometry or do it with fiber mesh or just what i'm usually i like to do fiber matte all right sorry i like to do geometry in case i ever want to 3d print this so that's the only reason i would kind of use geometry and you can make um you can make fiber mesh into geometry it just takes a little bit more effort and experimenting so okay i came in a little bit is the soft brush part of the new newest i think you're trying to say newest version or is it a brush available for purchase these these down here are my brushes not all of them but most of them the ones that look like this these are brushes that i've made and this one and this one um and you can get all those for free over yeah thanks neil on 3dcharacterworkshop.com i give them away for free so um just really quickly i'll show you where to go to get those so if you go to 3dcharacterworkshop.com this is my website um and i do teach an online workshop if you're interested about in if you're interested in it you can click here to learn more about it and you can just scroll down here and there's the brushes right there so you can just fill in your name and email and uh that's you get on my newsletter but i don't really send out much email because i'm not a spam fan so i just tell you when occasionally yeah when i'm doing stuff so all right well thank you so much i'm glad you're glad you like them okay so yeah let's uh keep working on that okay what what do i want to do with this hair let's you know what let's play around with some fiber mesh we have time we can do it hey what's up ghost it's been a while yeah spam not a huge fan of the spam but um my goals for uh 2021 if any of you guys are interested i shouldn't say this i always i always regret it but what i would love to do is um start putting out videos on my youtube channel and if i do that then i'll send out email whenever i post a new video so that's that's kind of the idea for 2021 but we'll see no promises okay so let's do these little hairs up front first hey there quicksilver how you doing okay so to to start messing with fiber mesh i'm just going to put a little dot right there on his on his head maybe maybe long maybe wider be like this yeah hit that bill lock on there's a here's a poll for you guys uh and i i think i already know the answer but um for my youtube channel i'm like should i grow i have two of them i have one that's 3d character workshop and i have one that's channelson so i'm just trying to decide which which one to grow like if you were to do a search would you search for my name or 3d character workshop i'm pretty sure i know the answer but i want to hear what you guys have to say see if i'm right okay so i just make a little kind of dot on his head where the hair is going to grow out okay let's save this before we get going any further thanks cena okay so far i'm not wrong okay it's good that's good okay let's do um search both okay let's see fiber mesh where are you why did i click on size alright mesh nano mesh fiber mesh there we go okay now with fiber mesh um thanks quicksilver um with with fiber mesh what i usually do is you know the default fiber mesh if i were to just hit uh preview you can see what it looks like it it just it just makes a whole mess it's kind of hard to see but kind of see it's just this big mess of hair um and i can go i can start from there and just start adjusting it but it's funny this hair uh the default hair reminds me of those uh do you remember those uh magnetic um they're kind of a blister thing on cardboard that's full of like uh metal filings and you take a magnet and you drag those metal filings around to make hair you know that's that's what this reminds me of is like yep i see more images with the 3d character workshop branding considering your signature is in the logo and then search for me okay interesting the bald dude thanks okay let's see uh but i what i like to do is go to uh fiber meshes up here fibers there's a whole bunch of preset ones um and so there's more to start from if you can find one that's kind of closer to what i'm looking for so let me drag this down even if there are different colors i i ignore the color because the color is easy to change i just look for the shape so these are a little wavy he looks like an emo kid look at that um oh this is curly gotta read it too i wonder if i can change gravity on this but i think it will the gravity will come with it look at that crazy crazier all right i think well maybe oh this tall weeds one but that's kind of i don't want it to hang that way sure wavy this is wavy i keep going back to this one that's kind of oh maybe this one nope oh goodness it's like [Laughter] the the toy was what are you talking about the toy no i i really don't take offense i'm i'm as bald as they come so but i've i've embraced it i'm that guy so whatever it doesn't bug me all right so i think i'm going to where's that longer one this one i think i'll start i'll start with this one i don't know let's see what happens gravity i love playing with fiber mesh because it makes me laugh oh the the magnetic toy got you got you got you uh what are you thinking about posting on your channel um funny you ask i actually i've been kind of working on a list of of potential ideas and let me know if you guys think any of these are interesting um okay so here's the idea i want to post motivational stuff um kind of tips and tricks little short videos on how to do specific things and then some tech stuff so like i said how to do specific things very technical and then keep the art stuff in in the course right so like reviews of your characters all that kind of stuff would remain inside the course and then i would kind of start to pull out some of the tech stuff um but and then some more high-level generic um industry type videos like how to stay motivated what to put in your portfolio how to get freelance work where to look for full-time work um should you go to conferences or not um should you focus on real life realistic or stylized how much should you charge for uh freelance work i don't know what happened with that all of a sudden this just went away okay i like leaving his hair changes his whole character um and then how do you customize your own zbrush user interface how to make your own brushes um how to make your own insert multi mesh brushes that kind of stuff that's like the technical stuff um like uh and then like differences between dynamesh and sculptures pro z remesher versus retopology what when to use it and why that kind of stuff um z spheres making eyebrows all sorts of things all right yeah okay sweet sweet sweet so those are kind of my rough high level ideas okay let's turn these max fibers way down this is still quite kinky i don't want it that kinky here you can also turn the so the coverage is the thickness of the hairs okay let me let me change the color so you can actually see it all right we'll make it white just so you can see it better thanks jack i've always wondered how to make custom interface and brushes awesome sweet and how to download mine install it and then edit it to your you know and how to make custom menus like the one here so i made this custom menu because i don't like digging all the way down into this tool menu because it's really really long once you get a bunch of these open so i just wanted to pull out my favorite stuff and stick it on my own custom menu and the custom menu is really easy to make if you know how to make it right so that's the if part and that's where my video would come in is teaching you how to make a custom menu so okay um now there's this profile and the profile is the number of sides that these fibers give you so right now it's one which is essentially a single sided surface but i could do a a 2 and it's going to give me a warning a 3 will make a triangle so see all of a sudden it's a lot thicker but these each hair is a is shaped like a triangle and then a four would make a cube so each of these hairs is actually a cube you can see that pretty crazy do i cover rigging and posing i do cover posing i do not cover rigging yet yet so i was a rigger in a past life so i do know how to rig specifically in 3d studio max and maya but i'm learning other software and i yeah i'm thinking about doing some rigging rigging classes um so but right now i'm also trying to figure out um what to do with um like if i wanted to segment my course into smaller bits i'm also toying with that without uh making my current students angry because right now i have one course and it's one course to rule them all it's like the the ring from lord of the rings right so um it's it's like uh everything's in there i just wanted because i wanted it to be simple and um you know low maintenance for me to handle because it's just me so that's why i just jammed everything in there and i just sell one thing and it's all in there but i'm thinking i need to kind of diversify and break it up a little bit but we'll see i don't know yet i'm still trying to figure that out okay okay there we go now i gotta figure out where this kink is get rid of it all right neal shush it i'm on that but yes that's part of it okay oh coverage scale the tip where is it there's clumps rigging yeah rigging can be annoying for sure um well that's the width coverage scale tip radius i'm just trying to figure out where that oh it's revolve okay i don't want revolving there we go yeah it is for sure i mean and i was i was also an animator for five years of my career i've i was in um games for well it's about 22 years now and i i did rigging for about an equivalent of a years of it yeah i'm not a huge fan of rigging but i can do it okay let me lessen the max fibers i don't want that many okay a little bit more than that okay and now let's let's do i want to scale the roots okay and then segments or how many how many times it's divided going down the length of the thing so i can if i turn up the segments it's going to add so it's not so uh polygonal looking and yes that it's clipping through the hat and that's fine i thought it was clumping together um scale root sorry i'm just kind of concentrating a little bit animation is what i'm trying to get into do you have to have the degree to get a job in the studio i've done two years of school but i just haven't finished no um in in uh character arts and character animation and rigging all you need to do is show the studio that you can do the work that they need you to do so portfolio is king in that instance um degrees matter less degrees will help you network with other people you know if you're in schools like that and you're you're talking to other people but it's not necessary a degree isn't really really necessary it's it's you just have to have a really good portfolio to say yep i can animate see okay let's see whoops i didn't mean to do that gravity profile interesting okay so i think if i bring this up there we go so fibers are really tunable if you know what you're kind of doing which i don't um i'm trying to i'm trying i want to kind of gather them together that's what i'm looking to do now i i thought clumping would do it but it's it's not really doing anything so segments previous settings export okay well i think i'm just going to keep them as they are right now i think that'll work i kind of want to splay them out left and right as well but i don't know how to do that either so let me see if i can figure out the slider that makes them whiter that rhymed the slider that makes them whiter and i can also turn the length down just a bit there we go okay surface area coverage variations no scale scale scale let's see um i want to get into 3d printing sometime this coming year and i was wondering what 3d printer i should buy do you have any recommendations i do here hold on a second i'll show you so i would get one of these things it's any any cubic let's see this thing i haven't used it yet it still has the the packing stuff inside of it but this isn't any cubic resin printer it's like the cheap one of the cheapest resin printers you can get for the money um and it's it's a it's called a photon they have several different versions of it but um so for for a beginner just getting into it um i would i would bypass the extrusion printers that's the one where it heats up the tip and pushes plastic through the hot tip to do it that way i can't remember what it's called um but yeah that's it's a it's a good it's a good size the only problem is the resin kind of stinks so fdm thinks um so the the resin is a little more you just make sure you're in a well-vented area and uh you'll be just fine but yeah i think that's i think you can get those for around 200 bucks or something like that um and then um the yeah and then it just it just works really well and these back here that you see these were printed on a form two for the most part the mouse was printed on a form three but everything else was on a form two and the quality that comes out of the inner cubic is really close but the the print volume is much smaller so that's kind of what you're giving up so uh yeah you can ask a question about the workshop for sure uh yeah the smell will go away as the resin hardens so um resin is very susceptible to uv light that's what cures it and that's what uh it's basically every single layer gets a flash of light or laser to that that is uh has uvs in it that will cure it so as it cures that's um it won't stink anymore but the liquid itself and as it's um as it's curing it stinks but when it's all done it doesn't smell at all it's hardened oh yeah there's wash and cure as well uh-huh i have the wash and cure for the form two well for from form labs like it's not really for the form two it works with form 3 as well but it's actually sitting right here it's like and that they're about as big as that printer see this this is the wash station where you actually put put your stuff inside and and the the cure station is just as um the same size notice you mentioned keyshot and such for rendering but could someone use blender for rendering the model if they don't have the money for yes absolutely uh-huh yep so i've actually been um i i do a q a for my students every other friday saturday-ish and during my q a i did a demo on how to push your zbrush models over to blender to render them out in cycles okay i think i'm just going to say i like this and be done with it i like because i do like it so i think this is close enough this is as close as we're gonna get okay so let's do accept and when i hit accept it's going to make a new sub tool and now i can since i i have very few of these i can kind of spread them out by hand and clean them up a little bit so i'm going to do an auto groups which is going to put each one of them in their own group you can see how this kind of built them it's uh made them into cubes these little cubes and it has this one little tiny hair here we can get rid of that guy um let's go over to select rectangle and now i can just uh select a few of these and just kind of uh like bend them out a little bit maybe closer to the head like this sorry some sometimes things like hair they just take a long time to do they're not as fast and as glamorous as some of the other things and people are like why can't i just get this done fast well sometimes things are fast sometimes like re-topology and uv's not fast so you just have to have some patience just kind of work your way through it okay let's see maybe this yellow one yeah no worries hd for sure any cubic photon is what it's called or if you if you can afford it my favorite printer by far is the form two or form three form two form three yeah they're they're by far my favorite okay let's see i need to this one's crossing over weird and then i don't know if i'm liking these being clear out there that big it's a little better see this hole right here maybe i need to put this one in that area over here something like that sure that works there any companies you can send a model to to have it printed uh yeah that's the thing uh shapeways does that and i just barely put a dynamic subdivisions on this on these hairs so that that'll make them even softer and have a pointier tip on them now this will not 3d print well just so you know they're too small but i have 3d printed some um some fibers that aren't too much larger than this for my mouse i can show you guys that if you want to see it what characters did you make during the time you worked on disney infinity a whole bunch of them so i don't know if i can really go through the the list of them but some examples are like um uh ant-man olaf um anakin let's see i need to look at him uh ahsoka spider-man venom mickey mouse joy aladdin syndrome um yeah whole bunch of them yep yep on my art station there's a bunch i need to put more of them but with that bobby's oh nice you do does that work pretty well for you you said it you said they're pretty good huh so do you have them print in like uh um any of the metals by chance and how does that work if you do just super curious put this down here yeah awesome that's super cool so do you do mostly rings or or necklaces or everything or sorry i'm super curious that's really interesting to me because there's a guy um his name is uh thomas that that's a streamer on here and he does jewelry as well i was always just curious oh thanks i actually have a big version of boba fett right there right right there um does the resin get chunky when it gets old i haven't ran into that yet jack it's it's it's been so far so good um but i can easily see it doing that i just haven't seen it get chunky yet there we go let's try that for now it's pretty spiky hair oh i haven't done rings because you don't know how to size a property interesting okay okay i'm gonna do this move elastic because it's very squishy so with hair i like to use move elastic because it has a larger fall off and it's like i said it's squishy also um snake hook brush works pretty good for hair as well i don't really use many of the grooming brushes because usually i'm just editing a few hairs like this at a time oh thanks hd i i don't know where to find them anymore i actually saw some listed on facebook um but yeah they're becoming more and more rare harder to find i don't know where to go there are ways to force zbrush to print sizes accurately yep and so i can actually tell you how i do it if you want to know and it's using my ruler so this ruler right here i made a ruler that's very similar to that ruler when we were working on disney infinity and basically how zbrush works is if you go to the print this 3d print station right here uh the 3d print hub basically you can either set whatever height that you want your character to be right that's usually what most people will do but to me that's not very accurate i mean it's accurate as far as how tall you want the character but we had to have a base right so the the base on the character was this ring and that ring was a known size and so we had to build our characters to that ring and we had to have that ring print out exactly the same size every single time so what i did is i made a ruler and that base that ring base that were together and then we would kind of hand it out across the character modelers and we would all model to that base and since that ruler was a known size it's actually 200 millimeters tall we could just print the entire scene at 200 millimeters and it would print out absolutely accurate when uh when we would do our prints like like to a micrometer it would print out super accurate so that's that's how i got around that so if you and like i give that ruler away if you want to have it it's over on 3dcharactworkshop.com you can grab it um but if you were to like guess how tall he was from his head to the base you would it would it would you would probably shrink the ring either or grow it because you didn't know exactly the size that he should print at but like i said if you if you have the known size which is the ruler it's much easier okay so let's color these hairs in no not the hat hairs there we go that's pretty funny i like those hey mike what's the best way to learn zbrush for character creation like this total noob here well not not to uh shamelessly promote but i have a full-on course that you can get called 3d character workshop and it takes you from absolute beginner to intermediate advanced but i wouldn't recommend investing in that unless you're actually you know super serious about it um so i would i would actually uh if you're if you're wanting to dabble like put your toe in the water i would go actually grab either zbrushcore mini which is free or zbrushcore which is i believe today it's like around 900 or something like that um and you could uh you could play with that and see if you like sculpting um and then if you if you decide you're more serious then you know make an investment and join us over the 3d character workshop okay so now that i have this hair let's do let's do some more so you want to clear that mask sonic i don't understand what you're trying to say there sorry about that is learning traditional sculpting a prerequisite or can you be successful sir i'm not a traditional sculptor at all but i have students that are so it it doesn't hurt at all so art is art and the the software is just a medium just like you know people saying is is painting in water watercolor versus oil versus drawing versus you know whatever it is your art skills will transfer um so your knowledge of anatomy will transfer your knowledge of composition and color and all that kind of stuff will transfer no matter what medium you're using so um yeah it shouldn't it shouldn't matter is what i'm trying to say oh okay zebra's core is now 180 all right thanks for that i wasn't sure okay so i'm just gonna paint where that hair is coming out right there hey what's up just no problem mike wish you luck on your journey let's do check that out how long did it take for this model um we're going on let's see two hours last week and an hour and a half this week so three and a half hours so far is where we're at okay um let's do turn up the max fibers on this guy he looks like mad hatter a little bit it's funny all right let's turn up the gravity on it that's almost where i want it that's too funny okay let's shorten it up let's turn on transparency so we can kind of see where it is underneath there maybe be right there okay at a studio how long would one be roughly expected to scope the full character depends on the character honestly um yeah it depends on how detailed the character is so for these infinity characters it would take us three or four weeks for the high res because we'd have to go back and forth with art direction and um the uh you know the owners of the characters like disney or lucas or whoever owned them we'd have to send that back and forth and get approvals from them and yeah it just depends and how detailed the textures are and all that stuff so okay maybe something like that that's not bad like how it's kind of curling out like that it's funny i know in on this one there it's supposed to be coming out from underneath the hat but here i kind of have it coming out like right at the hat so i'm trying to decide if i care if i want it to come out underneath the hat or not but i think this is kind of funny like it's growing out of the side of his head like that thanks neil okay so let's turn the gravity down just a little bit more there we go then i can edit this i think this will make it go out so this is the gravity profile yeah i don't want to do that so if you ever accidentally add an extra vertice in here to get rid of it all you have to do is drag it off and it'll go away okay i'm going to try one well i think i'll just leave this and edit it so let me accept it and then back up to sub tool here's our new fibers and then we can edit these okay so that's interesting that they're kind of off as far as symmetry goes all right i can just kind of push this down the head a little bit more okay so just curious is there any other youtube videos that you guys would want to see from me that's not like straight up teaching that's just more like i want to see this specific thing or any specific industry questions that you would have and want me to cover i was also thinking about um i was thinking about doing some industry pro interviews hey sonic this is the pixelogic um twitch stream or youtube channel that's why so pixelogic is the owners of zbrush it created zbrush and that's this is their channel i do have industry professional interviews inside my course right now students like those a lot but i might do an edited down version and make those free on youtube if people are interested what sort of work should a junior sculptor expect during their first year would you get to work on characters or mostly props or just re-topologizing or retopology and uving um so it depends on the studio and it depends on it depends on how much work they have and what they need you to do versus um like how much they need to train you on doing certain things um but you probably aren't gonna get to work on like the the front most character maybe some crowd characters and things like that um it just depends yeah hd there's some really good ones in there um one of my favorites is probably the one with paul dc that one's really good the one with tyler bullier they're all they're all really good to see some introduction to environment if you can make it available uh yeah i'm not an environment artist just doodoo i'm i i could um i could interview one you know like i have a lot of environment artist friends but i've never done it myself okay this isn't as thick as i'd like it to be but it's always fun to see artist station setups oh yeah yeah whoa what is on the tips of these things oh okay it's just the subdivision things okay and then curve is there a way to get a custom axis just choosing x y or z doesn't line up right um not that i know no in bend curve you have to use the um you have to use the little dots to drag along it's not really based off of the the gizmo axis or anything like that let's bring this out i'm just going to tune each of these um hd i don't know if i'd recommend that i would still i would still just push through that being your first one here i'm going to hide these it's a it's a really good taste before because stylized anatomy is like kind of a next level thing yeah that's that's kind of an intermediate doing a a human block out it's kind of intermediate yeah i'd do the head first yeah i need i really need to do a better better onboarding so i can uh kind of clarify what what you should watch first and second and third and so forth and i'm also working on a challenge like a beginner challenge that's uh like a saturday morning cartoon blockout like we did with the student challenge a while back um that worked out really really well and i want to make it a thing that every new student goes through so that that's that's coming i is it better to learn realistic or stylized as a beginner i would say um if you don't know either right now i would say uh realistic because stylized is basically realistic with broken rules not necessarily broken just pushed rules hey what's up chris no worries because that's all stylized is it's taking re reality and exaggerating it and simplifying it but knowing what to exaggerate and simplify is also a skill uh sonic i use a i use a tablet i'm on a cintiq right now oh thanks neil yeah that was fun i think it was really effective make some of these a little longer i'm just not gonna i'm just gonna tune a couple of these by hand they're just a little a little unruly look like little stringy stringies um they i believe are you in the are you in the chorus told talden you are um so i would go into the forum and then into the student challenges i think they're there you can check them out right there if i'm if i'm remembering correctly okay let's see let me i want to mix these holly berries or holly leaves in this holly berry i started learning cartoon then went into some realistic style is sculpting now i'm learning stylized i want to aim for a realistic stylist look for my character yeah yeah there's so that well i'll i'll have to um i'll have to get into it on like a q a right but you also need to learn how to walk before you can run and overwatch is like i don't know learning how to like if you're learning how to play guitar you need to learn how to play like mary had a little lamb first kind of a thing before you learned jimi hendrix not saying that overwatch is jimi hendrix but hopefully you'll that makes sense i would start simple and then work your way up to that is what i'm trying to say okay let's make some of these hall these these leaves oh no worries sonic um yeah back back to your question the about the cintiq you just need a you just need some sort of drawing tablet something with some pressure sensitivity that's all i recommend just don't don't use a mouse for sculpting you can use it for um certain things that you don't need pressure sensitivity for but for abs for sculpting especially like lines like this you will want something with some pressure sensitivity oh hey marcus oh i thought you neil you posted you posted the name marcus i just barely glanced and i thought marcus was in here but okay this is i also picked up one of these these 3d connection space mice space mouse this is really cool for getting around so like i can hold my pen in this hand and i'm i'm moving around with my space mouse and i can sculpt and move at the same time it's almost like doing vr okay so let's do let's do these hollies holly holly i keep saying that and they keep getting distracted okay let's split this off and i'm just giving myself kind of a plane to uh to draw on yes it's mirrored for some reason oh you found them awesome okay cool okay so i'm just going to make a leaf on here i'm trying to trying to decide the best way to do this turn symmetry off i think i might just do like a sculptris pro version because they're so complex yeah that's a that's a good call take it slow i'm actually going to turn this so it's parallel with the world so you get a little bit better results when it is with um sculptures pro because it's kind of like uh it makes a grid sort of sort of a grid okay let's see turn up adaptive size there we go are you serious chris no way that's awesome uh what is better for fixing manifold issues for 3d printing blender or zbrush i have yet to try zbrush when 3d printing what i usually do is i will decimate so basically you can go into this decimation master and decimate your model so it's very very light in triangles so your printer can read it because it'll make it a very small file but sometimes that will create holes and non-manifold geometry and what i will do then is i will do a a weld points close holes um which you can find that under modify topology and that will kind of clean it up and then you'll send it over to your printing software and then usually your printing software will have some sort of a clean up algorithm that you can run so like like a you know fix issues and it will it will help you fix those issues as well hope that helps okay i'm just going to delete the edges of this i'm just trying to get a clean surface to start with here oh goodness i didn't do it okay undo that maybe i will give it some thickness okay i'm going to turn my z intensity way down i just basically want to triangulate this get it ready for sculpting on there we go okay if i was smart i could do this down at 0 0 and use use mirroring and everything but whatever i'm just gonna go for it um let's see i'm gonna actually go like make a leaf shape like this have i seen the cool works of ryan love i have not makes cool helmets nice i don't know how good this is gonna work but i'm gonna try it what am i working on the leaf see these holly leaves right here i just don't know how good it's gonna work something like that i guess um then i'll do uh let me fix this a little bit you're like what the crap is that that you're doing right now okay now i can do a let's see yeah um edge loop mask border which will put an edge loop all the way around the mast area and then let's see i polished by features that'll clean up the edges a little bit and ignore this and then i can just isolate this could one theoretically make the shape in shadow box i guess you could i'm just not a huge fan of shadowbox i don't know why i just i know a lot of people use it and like it i'm just i don't and i don't know why i'm just not a okay let's see um like there's so many different ways of making things inside of zbrush which is great that's what's great about it is you can just find what you like to do and do it that way uh just uh well i i'm not gonna demo it right now i'm you it's um you can find it on on youtube pretty easily i think somebody demoing it where can you find the edge loop mass border it's under masking um let's see i'll tell you really quick it is um it's under geometry edge loop mass border so tool geometry edge loop mass border so right here right there that's where you get it okay just smoothing this down a little bit okay sorry i don't have time to demo that right now i think i might bend this first let's give it a better color it's not this weird brown color there we go that's more leafy okay i just want to bend this and um somebody was asking if i ever use the transpose tool and this is what i do is when i want to bend something specific like this i'll just switch over to the transpose line drag it down the length of what i want to bend like this and then i'll kind of drag it out past the thing because it works like a bell curve not a it doesn't go through here and then through there it works like a bell so it comes straight through this one and then bells out so if you if you have um move selected with your transpose tool and you hold down alt and click on this white circle and drag it it will actually bend it like that so i'm just i'm just kind of adding a little interest is all i'm looking for so it's not just a super flat i mean it does kind of look super flat up here but i want to add a little bit of 3d to it right 3d yeah something like that okay that's good enough i think all right let's make this a little bit bigger creature brush who could that be thank you for so much uh it makes me laugh thanks holly leaves all right let's see let's get that berry on there there why is this flat in the world that's weird it's like totally flat oh what was it that did that oh i i i found it once i can't remember what makes it flat what makes it do that i'm going to save it though if anything if ever anything weird happens like that just uh just save it so i'm going to select a different sub tool and see if it yeah it's doing it on that one too so weird well i'm just going to append a sphere instead dynamic thickness already turned on oh ah that shouldn't do that shouldn't yeah it doesn't really yeah i don't know here i'm gonna do um yeah chris i just don't want to restart that's what i that's my first thought is like re it's time to restart zbrush but um i don't want to do that during a live stream so um i'm just going to append as a sphere in here i wonder if it'll do it on like this one yep see it's doing it's doing on a completely different tool it's just it's doing it on every single every single tool that's not doing it on these so you said it's on modifiers under the brush here let me change back to this one so what what is it oh come on so what's the option called oh yeah reset the brush and i'm trying to remember how to reset the brush there's load strength modifier this thing i think it's supposed to be that i don't know i don't know what i changed right at the bottom of the brush menu is reset okay reset current brush let's try that yeah thank you alright thanks party people there we go okay yep that works that was weird i don't know what i did thanks everybody for your help appreciate it hey emmett um drawn tap control did you uh no like there was some modifier that was that was messed up i don't know how i did it okay so um let's see yeah i think i think we're going to end it there sorry i didn't get to the beard creature brush i use fiber mesh oh where speaking of hair where did it go there we go fiber mesh and i i if you want to watch it back this uh you can watch this video uh back on pixellogix youtube channel you can go watch it there you can see exactly how i did it if you want to see so anyway um i think we're going to leave it right there so let's do this just turning on uh i kind of wish his eyes were a little closer those eyes are really close together but hey it works it works all right everybody thanks so so much for hanging out with me today i appreciate it and uh yeah thanks everybody for your help uh have a wonderful wonderful new year hopefully next year is going to be better right fingers crossed and get out of this this funk of a crazy year we got going on um if you like this user interface these brushes um and my ruler file i give them all away for free over on my website 3dcharacterworkshop.com it's right here and um yep thank you neil and uh and thank you neil for posting all those links for everyone i appreciate it and um i will see you all let me see i believe next week let's see where we at that's on the 4th yeah i'll be streaming on the 4th so yep thank you happy sculpting we'll see you next monday everybody thanks take care we'll see ya
