welcome to the national shrine divine mercy live stream of the first area of oceans my name is father john larson and substituting tonight for father chris lr and we have i'm going to give a talk on our lady of lowe or laos laus apparitions in france that were approved by the vatican in the year 2008 but happened long ago and that'll be the beginning so i'll give a talk on an apparition and then after that i will change we'll have adoration i will pray the rosary and then we'll also have acts of contrition and spiritual communion for the requirements for first saturday and then also i'll do a 15-minute meditation on some mysteries of rosary so i'll begin let's begin with a prayer about talking about this apparition named father and son the holy spirit lord god i ask you to bless this time as we learn about the apparitions of our lady of law in france that this may be a blessed time to help us to understand more your great love for us and your mother's love for us lord jesus we ask your mother's love be with us as we pray hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen our lady of lo pray for us in the name of the father and the son of the holy spirit this is an apparition that is a bit obscure i don't know how well it's known in the world in general in the united states i don't think many people know about this apparition it is a an apparition that takes place in the french alps and there's one visionary and i'm not going to say her name in french probably will say it wrong but the anglicized version is benedicta uh rengrel uh so venerable benedicta she's now venerable and she had apparitions between 1664 and 1718 and she had many apparitions of our lady she came every day for a while to her she had apparitions of our lord and various saints and sometimes a saint would announce to her that our lady was going to appear to her and there was a lot of controversy during her lifetime about these apparitions but also there was a lot of good fruit there was a lot there were a lot of healings a lot of miracles and so these apparitions while not as well known made a huge impact on the area in the french alps and in 2008 the bishop of the area accompanied by numerous cardinals and archbishops from around the world announced the official approval of the church of the marine apparitions to benedicta renkrel between 1664 and 1718. and so he said i recognize the supernatural origin of the apparitions and the events and words experienced and narrated by benedicta i encourage all the faithful to come and pray and seek spiritual renewal at this shrine he also continued nobody is obliged to believe in apparitions even in those officially recognized but if they help us in our faith in our daily lives why should we reject them so yes it's true apparitions are not required to be believed in the church only says that uh they uh have the the approval uh that they are of supernatural origin at least insofar as can be understood and there is plenty of fruits from these often these apparitions and this shrine attracts some 120 000 pilgrims each year not one of the biggest shrines but the catholic philosopher jean gution called it jean gutong called it one of the most hidden and powerful shrines in europe so i'm actually reading from a catholic news agency article from 2008 that gives a little summary so i'll start with this summary about the apparitions so benedicta in may of 1664 was a shepherdist she was caring for some animals and she saw a dazzling lady standing on a rock and she was also praying the rosary by the way benedicta was holding a beautiful child in her arms beautiful lady she exclaimed what are you doing up there do you want to eat with me i have some good bread with which we can soften up the fountain the girl's simplicity brought a smile to the lady's face but she said nothing and then she kept going to the same place and eventually she started the the woman started talking to her she said who are you and she said her name was mary and it was indeed mary uh and so mary starts telling her preparing her for her mission she gives her a mission and uh there was also one day she is having vision she's having apparitions so it says for four months the lady appeared to benedicta every day preparing her for her mission uh then another lady she told but the lady did not believe her one day however the woman secretly followed her to the valley she didn't see the vision but she did hear mary's voice who told benedicta to warn her that the soul was in danger she has something on her conscience mary said tell her to do penance the woman was deeply moved by the message and returned to the sacraments and lived piously for the rest of her days so the emphasis on this on these apparitions was reconciliation that's the main emphasis mary revealed herself as the reconciler and refuge of sinners and therefore she offered signs to convince them of the need to repent she told benedicta that the oil from the sanctuary lamp would work miracles with the infirm if they received the anointing with faith in her intercession and they still to this day have the sanctuary lamp and they have it lit with oil and you can get that oil if you go to the place she took her mission and she received from mary seriously and dedicated herself to preparing sinners to receive the sacrament of penance she encouraged the two priests at the shrine so the the it now by now uh i'm i have the very brief description uh in a few years there is a shrine built and i'll go back and and talk about how our lady gives her the information for the shrine and there were two priests and she encouraged the two priests to strike to receive penitents with sharian kindness charity and kindness in order to help them convert mary asked benedicta to admonish women and girls about living lives of scandal especially those who commit abortion the unjust wealthy and the perverse she also encouraged priests and religious to be faithful to their vows between 1669 and 1679 she received five visions of the suffering christ and i'll talk a little bit more about at least one of those and then in 1718 christmas day she dies actually well some say she died on christmas day other day others say she died three days later i'm not sure and she said she passed away peacefully around that time made a confession received the last rites so she had many apparitions through her lifetime and there are so many probably that we don't know how many she had so this is an apparition of one person but it's an apparition that is rather continuous not completely continuous but for over for many years there are apparitions now st faustina is not totally unlike that saint faustina has many visions of jesus a few of mary a few of other saints and at one point in the diary she says jesus appeared in the usual way she's getting so used to it that jesus just appeared in the usual way now here i'm sure that this benedicta would have seen the said the same thing mary appeared in the usual way she had many visions and these visions were toward mainly as i said the the um the uh repentance reconciliation and so refuge of sinners so the emphasis is on repentance in fact this girl actually received the ability sometimes to read souls now often we think of the ability to read souls only with say a priest sometimes priests in confession like padre pio but other people sometimes have been given the ability to read souls sometimes lay people are given this it is rare but it does occasionally happen and that was part of her helping people to repent interestingly enough i don't think the priests who were hearing the confessions there could read souls but this benedicta was given this and sometimes people would come and she would know exactly what they needed to repent of or what they were not telling or something like that and early on she has this tender compassion for sinners she is she is really wanting as as we see the children of fatima they pray for sinners a lot and this girl especially in her younger days she she finds that she prays for she prays often she only sleeps two to three hours a night she's praying a lot our lady helps her to discover a small chapel that had been forgotten and uh our lady tells her that there will be a beautiful fragrance coming from the place so she goes to this little village area and there's these little hovels little small houses and they all look the same and she goes around and she smells the fragrant beautiful fragrance at one goes in and sure enough there's an old altar covered with dust and our lady tells her that this will be the place that she is to start she has the apparitions in and the benedictus says this chapel is very poor and in an unsuitable condition do not grieve respond to the sweet virgin in a short time nothing will be missing from here neither linens nor ultra cloths no candles no vestments i want to have built in this place a great church with a building for a few resident priests this church will be built in honor of my very dear son and be mine many sinners men and women will convert here it will be the length and width as necessary and as i wanted you will see me here very frequently build a church replied the shepherdess but there is no money for that it will be necessary to remain in this chapel as it is do not worry insisted the mother of god when it will be necessary to build we will find everything necessary and it will be soon the copper coins of the poor will provide everything nothing will be lacking so uh there is eventually a church built and and it isn't that many years later uh then there are many miracles uh so i'll just mention a few miracles of the place one of the first was a miraculous cure of the son of a surgeon from gap gap a certain local place it seemed that the blessed virgin wanted to require science to give testimony to her power and to recognize the supernatural which offends certain people and this pierre had seven ulcers that devoured his lower limbs in addition he had an infection of the eyes for the prior 15 months that had left him almost blind the surgeon had spared nothing to cure his son at which end he brought his son too low the child recovered his sight and his ulcers closed and radically cured he was strong enough to walk home to gap also there was a son of jean robert also from gap who had small pox that left him crippled and unable to move for three years he was carried to low and he recovered completely there are also andre aleman from saint julien who had been deprived of his sight for several years and recovered his vision at the holy chapel uh and actually two of these that i mentioned the second two occurred on the same day on august 15th uh and so there were numerous miracles sometimes at the at this place uh so uh this this uh benedicta decides to become a religious start a little religious community there and but she has a lot of persecution a lot of opposition and that's a whole story unto itself but she in the end has tremendous visions that boost her and help her to survive all the persecution jesus gives her lots of virtues and she has a particular also particular devotion to a particular cross we have a cross that's considered miraculous actually right here from poland that we're still we still have that's traveling around and uh the people pray before this cross often and there's great uh graces from this cross but she had devotion to a particular cross and uh she was one day focused on the sorrows by seeing these the suffering of our lord and he told her what you believe you see me suffering is not what i am suffering at present but it is to show you what i suffered for sinners and the love that i had for them these words little reassured the compassion of soul because after these apparitions she spent long days without able to be without being able to be consoled one time her affliction would even last six months this would not prevent her from finding uh an indi definable charism in these visions also she found more and more delight to be present at the foot of the miraculous cross when her good jesus inspired her to return there and so one day she was harvesting a wheat field in the company of other persons when suddenly she left her sickle and walked to the side where she was directed by the divine attraction arriving at the cross she saw a lord attached to it with nails like on calvary with blood running all over his body and with such an expression of suffering that she was at the point of losing her senses some angels were at the foot of the cross adoring in a gloomy silence my daughter the savior said to benedicta i let you see me in this condition so that you can participate in the sorrows of my passion and then following that day she was indeed crucified once a week that is from thursday evening from 4 pm to saturday morning at 9 00 am she remains stretched out on her bed her arms outstretch one foot upon the other her fingers slightly bent but stiff and immobile and less flexible in her body than an iron rod and she was unable to make any movement during that entire time that indicated she was still alive nothing else in nothing else indicated death but on her inert body for her facial expression were the double impression of unspeakable martyrdom and unspeakable happiness in the shape that the crucifix had made her she had in her body the impression of the sacred wounds although it seems that the wounds in the feet were visible but not the hands and that was so she didn't have to she wasn't too conspicuous uh and so that was something there were these friday passions but then she has them for a time and then she is told to go back to work to to distribute food to the crowds and uh and also probably to minister to them in other ways so the lord has her do that for a time but the apparitions so have all different aspects to them but so they they are interesting things to learn about there's many many aspects to them but i leave you with those few examples so this our lady of low is laus by the way low it is not as i said very famous but for those who go there it is a wonderful place of pilgrimage and it is well known for many conversions so that's the that's the main emphasis it is really a place of divine mercy and uh the divine mercy the emphasis on god's mercy on repentance uh is certainly sought seen there in our lady's desires for the place and places like this another place of divine mercy many places many marian shrines are really places of divine mercy many powerful confessions many returns to the faith so we we should think about that ourselves uh in our own need to repent continuously recognize our sinfulness repent and continue our journey to uh to greater uh sanctity and so i will close with uh just the thought that uh no matter where or what place our lady appears there is in some way a call to repentance and that is certainly something we see in all the different shrines that that happens there there are healings there are miracles but there's also that call to repentance and so that is very primary that is why she comes uh she wants us to follow her son and so uh we can in one way in in following her son and making reparation for outrages and sacrileges is the first saturday devotions so uh in a few minutes i will start the first area devotions i'm going to go downstairs and vest and then we will begin the first day of devotions momentarily hmm [Music] [Music] so please so [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] oh [Music] oh purchased for us the rewards of eternal life grant we beseech thee that while meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the blessed virgin mary we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise through the same christ our glory amen saint michael the archangel defend us in battle be our protection against the wickedness and the snares of the devil may god rebuke him we humbly pray and do the whole prince of the heavenly hosts by the power of god cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits who pray about the world seeking the ruin of souls amen may divine assistance remain always with us [Music] amen the father and son of the holy spirit we continue now with a 15-minute meditation on the mysteries of the rosary i'm going to look particularly at the sorrowful mysteries i don't know if we'll get through all of them but i intend to meditate for now 15 minutes on the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary and this is a technique that one mary and father michael collier taught me years ago there are various ways of doing this technique of meditating on mysteries of the rosary one is to take a small passage from scripture perhaps the gospels and to link it with the mysteries and one might take a different passage for each mystery one might even take the same passage for all the mysteries and this is an exercise in meditation where it is quite possible to take a small passage and develop a great meditation out of it so here is the passage i'm going to use it's one verse from the gospel according to saint mark chapter 12 from the parable of the vine dressers verse 7 but the vine dressers said to one another this is the air come let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours so the vinedressers know that the air is coming the air of the vineyard owner and they think that if they kill the air the inheritance will be theirs they will have the vineyard and this idea uh obviously backfires and we know that from the parable but there is the obvious way in which killing jesus thinking that this will illuminate the air and then they will have the vineyard doesn't work that way but today we can think of this in relation to the killing of jesus in souls so people who try to eliminate the state of grace from the soul trying to eliminate the indwelling of the trinity the indwelling of christ having the mind of christ putting on the mind of christ or being part of the mystical body of christ as saint paul talks about this imagery is still important today that there are many people who try who want to kill jesus but in the soul to eliminate the faith in jesus from the soul and if we look at the first sorrowful mystery the first sorrowful mystery the agony in the garden jesus is in agony according to many mystics jesus sees the sins of the world he sees many many sins he sees many many outrages and sacrileges sacrileges against the eucharist sacrileges and and all kinds of uh very offensive behavior toward jesus he sees all these evil things now he does when consoled by the angel see good works good things fruits but for a while he sees sins and he sees those trying to eliminate him from the world eliminate his message eliminate any knowledge of him eliminate any love of him from the world he sees this and there's we can think of endless examples of this where there are people hard at work spending long hours working very hard to destroy the faith destroy the church destroy the image of god in the soul destroy the the interest in the faith destroy any knowledge of the faith to make it all seem dubious etc so we know that's the case and jesus would have seen that so we can think about that in the agony in the garden he sees all this effort although he does say to saint faustina that the thing that most was a harsh was was most difficult for him was the lukewarm soul who simply didn't care that was even worse he'd rather us be hotter cold than lukewarm but he certainly suffered seeing all the efforts to try to destroy the faith to make people forget about him and his great love for them and to ignore his his mercy his promises his promise of eternal life and so we can think about that that is a part of the agony in the garden they are they say this is the air come let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours thinking that they will be in the end success the six the ones who succeed but in of course in the end at the last judgment they are the ones who fail they failed completely and they will not reap any benefit from it and so another uh way we can think of these mysteries uh or this this passage we can look at it in light of the second sorrowful mystery the agony or the the scourging at the pillar the second sorrowful mystery and this we can we relate often to jesus suffering for impurity so here thinking of how there are so many examples of people trying to destroy any faith destroy any interest in jesus through spreading impurity many many examples of that many many uh that is a very common thing and some people work very hard to do that they work very hard and they spend long hours and work hard to make sure they have lots of impurity uh etc you know there's lots of available uh possible access to this uh and lots of uh hookup sites etcetera all this kind of thing all these ways in which they try to destroy any interest in the faith any knowledge of jesus any knowledge of the commandments and to to mock them to thwart them to to say this is impossible or hard to do or you can't do it or this type of thing and so uh there is lots of effort lots of effort in this so we can think of that too in light of the scourging at the pillar now in the passion jesus suffers because of things passion means you suffer because of something on you you know it's it's you're you're being hit so to speak you're being hit by something that's passion and so he is being hit especially in the scourging that is very much a passion that is very much a direct part of the passion and but he takes all these blows and he takes the blows so that we can be forgiven of our sins and so he brings the hope of salvation even to those in the depths of impurity so jesus is always available he is taking those blows but he wants us to live with him live the life of grace and our souls to stop a life of impurity and start living in the light of christ in the life through the life of christ having christ live in us and so that we can think of as the second sorrowful mystery in relation to this the trying to kill jesus the third sorrowful mystery the crowning with thorns he is crowned with thorns often uh this is associated with uh knowledge so the head his head is crowned with thorns it's associated with his kingship but also he suffers in the head his head suffers and where it what's in the head the brain and what's the brain it is this place we have knowledge we learn through the brain the nerve center and so there are people who try to destroy knowledge of jesus or discount it or disprove it try to show there is nothing to this some even suggesting he never lived uh this sort of thing so there are people who work hard at this in all different ways trying to discount the faith discount the church discount jesus and all his promises discount all his gifts and so that is something we can think of in light of the third sorrowful mystery and there is so much effort all of these meditations we should be praying for these people i think i think in light of this i'm just kind of you know meditating but also it leads us to think about praying for these people so we should have that in mind uh trying to pray uh for uh the people involved in this sort of thing praying for conversions sometimes there are people who are very atheist who become very strong christians very strong catholics and they sometimes have very good arguments they they write books uh they they argue uh for uh the the faith in very strong ways so we see that we see that sometimes so it's good to think of the positive side of some of this too when people convert now the fourth sorrowful mystery is the carrying of the cross can take this in different directions jesus carries his cross to calvary he tells us to take up our crosses and follow him so we can take this maybe as difficulties along the way and crosses and people trying to argue against meritorious suffering arguing that suffering is useless so perhaps here we could think of people who promote euthanasia assisted suicide who promote ideas uh where suffering is is just simply useless and bad and we shouldn't go through it uh where we should avoid suffering at all costs and uh never do anything that might cause us to suffer in any way so never lift a hand to help people if it'll be a burden to us this sort of thing so a very selfish uh hedonistic lifestyle here some people try to promote this in order to kill the life of christ in the soul promoting this this sort of selfishness where i am all about what i need and what i you know what i want what i've got to get i've got to get all these things so that i'm you know not suffering in any way i want to be always tranquil always peaceful never suffering in any way jesus tells us to take up our cross and follow him expect sufferings expect hardships expect that there's going to be problems along the way uh and so that's another thing also to pray for people who are that who are thinking and trying to promote that sort of lifestyle and then finally the crucifixion and thinking of this mystery uh it kind of wraps everything up all the others because at the foot of the cross there are people yelling at jesus come down and we'll believe if you come down from the cross you know if if you come down we will believe and really all these examples are that kind of person who are trying to kill the life of christ in the soul but also they themselves perhaps have an argument they have a beef with jesus they have the something he didn't do that they wanted him to do or something that they feel like he he let them down and those who saw him that day suffering on the cross he let them down according to their ideas he's letting them down you're supposed to be our savior is supposed to save us save us from the romans our political savior you're supposed to save us but you're not doing that you're just dying on the cross they so they had a beef with him they had a problem that he wasn't doing what they wanted him to do obviously he wasn't he wasn't doing and he didn't do what they wanted him to do he was not a political savior but that was not his purpose he was a savior in a different way he was going he was not about temporary salvation he was about eternal salvation and there's a there's a an eternal difference between temporary salvation and eternal salvation and he was more interested in the eternal side of course because he knew what it was much better and so so he in the in the crucifixion uh it's all of these examples they're trying to destroy the life of christ why often because they have some problem with what he did that is disappointing the crucifixion is from a human natural perspective very disappointing nothing there he just dies that's the end there's nothing there but that's not his purpose his purpose is to suffer for eternal life he'll rise in three days and give us the ability to have eternal life so there is everything the cross has everything every good gift every possible goodness is in the cross but it's hidden it's it's not obvious it's infinite power it's not temporary power if you win one battle you might lose another but if you win forever you never lose and that's what he did he he'd rather win forever than win a billion battles he could win a billion battles and then if he lost that's it but if you win one battle for eternity you have no more worries there's no more battles to win so much better you could trillion quadrillion keep going you could win uh google battles you know google is a number you could win that many battles doesn't matter in the end if you lose you lose but if you win for eternity infinite power then you never lose so that gives us the the one little uh passage we can take one line and we can meditate on it in light of the mysteries of the rosary and uh father michael kalia he's very good at this too i mean he he's amazing and so this is one example of taking that take one little passage from the gospels and take one mystery of the rosary and i assure you you will connect them even if it seems very odd you will be able to connect them and you will find that there is so much fruit in this type of meditation that the mysteries of the rosary do connect up they are great mysteries and they do connect to all the mysteries of salvation so we will now close with benediction so feels oh [Music] me is [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] oh [Music] you have given them bread from heaven [Music]
