Sat, Feb 26 - Holy Mass from the National Shrine

[Music] mercies lord eternal shall my praises be for you've been faithful to your word your love like air and encircles me by faith and grace we have gathered here to join our hearts and communal love these gifts you give we hold most dear your precious body and your blood in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the lord be with you and with your spirit well welcome to this morning liturgy here at the national shrine of the divine mercy we celebrate today a memorial of our blessed virgin mother blessed mother mary and particularly we're celebrating a mass in honor of our lady the queen of peace especially in its time in our world and some difficulties and and unrest breaking out we ask our ladies intercession to intercede for us who is our mother and queen of peace brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fall therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen [Music] is [Music] let us pray lord our god you sent your only son to bring peace to our world through the intercession of blessed mary ever virgin hear our earnest prayer grant that our times may be tranquil so that we may live in peace as one family united in love for one another through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever r amen a reading from the letter of saint james beloved is anyone among you suffering he should pray as anyone in good spirits he should sing a song of praise is anyone among you sick he should summon the presbyters of the church and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the lord the prayer of faith will save the sick person and the lord will raise him up if he has committed any sins he will be forgiven therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed the fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful elijah was a man like us yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land then elijah prayed again and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit my brothers and sisters if anyone among you shall stray from the truth and someone bring him back he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins the word of the lord thanks be to god [Applause] let my prayer come like incense before you let my prayer come like incense before you o lord to you i call hasten to me hearken to my voice when i call upon you let my prayer come like incense before you the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice let my prayer come like incense before you o lord set a watch up before my mouth a guard at the door of my lips for toward you o god my lord my eyes are turned in you i take refuge strip me not of life let my prayer come like incense before you hallelujah [Music] blessed are you father lord of heaven and earth you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom [Music] the lord be with you and with your spirit a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory to you oh lord people were bringing children to jesus that he might touch them but the disciples rebuked them when jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them let the children come to me do not prevent them for the kingdom of god belongs to such as these amen i say to you whoever does not accept the kingdom of god like a child will not enter it then he embraced the children and blessed them placing his hands on them the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ be a little child and enter into the kingdom of god this is the words and the message that the lord speaks to us today in the scripture and i want to begin with uh a little story actually it's kind of an image that i think helps to bring this idea out so i recently was ordained a priest but i've been in a seminary and in formation for many years and studying and trying to learn and soak in all the the wisdom of the catholic faith and in seminary and i you know have to live away from i have my mom and dad live at home and then my brother and his wife and they have three little children and they live you know a couple hours away from where i went to study and went to seminary so i wouldn't i wouldn't see them very often you know every couple of months or so and so the three little children you know i did they don't didn't get to see me often and so it happened that you know and these little children are currently seven and five and a little two-year-old two nieces and a nephew and so i remember i was in i was on the campus one day of where we studied at the university close by to our house and i remember my family came to visit and along with the three little children and i was on the campus kind of at a one of their main gathering places kind of student center and there's a big kind of patch of grass you know a big lawn and i remember kind of turning the corner and i i see my my mom my dad and then the three little ones there and we kind of catch eyes we're about 100 yards away probably and the little ones they just start running they just start running straight for me and it's a long way it's a hundred yards for for little children that's a pretty good pretty good distance and so they just keep running and i'm just smiling and they're like yelling and they call me uncle stewie that's what they call me a little family name but uncle stu they just shouting it out and they keep running and i kind of am on my knees and just kind of ready to ready to welcome them and i'm like wow they're still running they're still going for it you know so they continue to run and to run and to run and they're just so you know happy and exuberant that they're really not worried about anything else they just they want to they want to come to me they want to give me a hug you know i want to see and see me and i thought it was interesting in the midst of a college campus and a student center you know sometimes at that age young people can kind of be trying to trying to discover themselves but there can be a sort of edge you know like kind of a too cool for school kind of an idea you know they want to be they want to kind of be in kind of want to be the the in crowd there but i think it was beautiful those little children just with wild abandon just running you know and of course they come and they you know give me a big hug and kind of bowl me over and you know i take them all up in my arms and give them a hug and a little kiss and embrace them i think this is a beautiful image for what the lord is speaking to us today about when he says let the little children come to me because the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these we hear in the gospel that the lord is teaching us about this and he just recently finished teaching in the gospel of mark a few verses prior about marriage and about this union between a man and a woman and the two come together and become one flesh and i think in a beautiful way the personification the realization of that one flesh union is a way the child itself it's one flesh of the two that have come together and so it's no accident that the lord's teaching on children come right after his teaching on marriage the fruitfulness of that communion and married life and we know that looking at jesus's own life we know that jesus himself had a mother whom we honor today our blessed mother our lady queen of peace under her title today but our blessed mother the mother of god that title that we honor her with and we also know that jesus has a father the heavenly father and so it's powerful to think of that jesus himself is this child this little child with his mother mary and his father god the father you know we know mary has this human nature so this human nature belongs to mary but this pure divine nature belongs to god the father and the union of those two the two becoming one flesh takes the human nature of mary and the divine nature of the father brings them together and the unity is the incarnation it's the two becoming one flesh the god-man jesus christ human nature but a divine person in one and this is the child and we can also look at how is it that the lord speaks to us of being a little child in our lives and so entering into the kingdom of god we know that jesus himself was and is the son and i think that's a powerful revelation in our understanding of the faith and our understanding of what god wishes to speak to us that we are caught up in this family dynamic as christians that god came as the son as a child and so if we are to inherit that kingdom if we are to be participants in that kingdom of god it's to participate in the fatherhood of god it's to let him father us in our lives it's to acknowledge that he is my father and i am his child and if i live his teachings if i live what the father is communicating in and through his son then i will also inherit the kingdom we know that jesus in his earthly life found himself in a situation that he knew was coming but nonetheless he had to to face it and this is his passion and he is the son and he wants to reveal to the world who the father is and it says in the gospel of john in the last one of the last chapters that is coming up to the passion of jesus he's in the garden of gethsemane in the garden of olives and he just finished the last supper and he's speaking to his apostles and he's sharing with them that he's going to soon depart and he's facing the prospect of his passion he's going to enter into his death but this is what he shares with him just before he's arrested one of the last things he says before he is arrested and he says he's speaking to the father and the disciples can hear him your righteous father the world also does not know you but i know you and they know that you sent me i made known to them your name and i will make it known that the love with which you love me may be in them and i in them and so we see here jesus is in a garden he's praying to the father for the sins of the world and his desire is nothing else but to make the father known to us to manifest the father's presence i think this scene reminds us of another garden and another sun and the involvement of sin we know that in the garden of eden all the way back to the beginning that adam is there along with his wife eve and we know that they have they were in the garden but their hearts were turned from the lord and they turned away and in their sin they turned away from the father their hearts were moving away not running towards him but were turned away and they were in hiding in the garden trying to cover themselves up putting all of these masks on to cover up them their true selves and the question that comes forth from the lord from the father to them is where are you where are you and he's not wondering about their geographic location in the garden but where are they in their hearts as his son and his daughter and where they are is they're in a place of hiding they're a place of fear because they're afraid of their father they've lost sight of who he is they've lost an awareness that they are to stand as sons and daughters in humility before the lord and we see another example of this in saint therese of lesu who's well known for her little way the spiritual childhood but one of the beautiful quotes that she shares is well she was 24 when she died but the lord brought her to the heights of sanctity precisely in and through this spiritual childhood doctor of the church the age of 24 she dies that's just that's god's action in her life but she said it is not because you know the lord's prevented me and protected me from mortal sin that i have this confidence in the lord she says even if i had every sin on my conscience that one could ever commit i wouldn't lose none of my confidence and with my heart breaking with sorrow i would run into the arms of the savior into the arms of the lord and ask him to embrace me and this is someone who knew with confidence who the father is because it's not so much what we've done where we've been what sins we've committed but it's that we run to the father we recognize lord you were the one who heals you were the one who reconciles you were the one who speaks again that blessing which is my identity as your son and your daughter that will never change but it takes our hearts to run to the father to move towards him and not continue to wear those masks in our heart not continue to hide but to continue to run towards the father as terres did and so i'm reminded again of that that image that we began with you know to be a little child entering the kingdom of god and those little ones running to me just in that reckless abandon as little ones do and i just want to end with a little prayer of sorts and i just want you to imagine yourself on that lawn i described and imagine that just the beautiful green grass there and imagine yourself as a little child maybe five years old just a little child and then i want you to see in the distance that the heavenly father is there and you catch sight of him and you see him then i want you to begin to run to the father just imagine yourself running towards the father and as you keep running and as you keep running what is coming up in your heart is there an obstacle is there a resistance to you running to the father to receive his embrace and keep running keep running to the father whatever you experiencing whatever you're feeling just keep running towards him keep running towards him and as you get closer and closer and he becomes bigger and bigger on the horizon just imagine yourself throwing yourself into his arms receiving his embrace and you can recognize what it is that's coming up in your heart but offer that to the father leave that in his hands surrender that to him and as you're there in the embrace of the father he places his hands upon you he kisses you he blesses you just remain in this place with the lord we can even think of this lenten season coming up but what if this lenten season for you and for me was nothing other than a running into the arms of the father just leaving whatever we have where we are in our hearts wherever we are to just continue to run to him to experience his embrace very simply very humbly as a little child because this is the lord's invitation to us today in the scripture he says be like a little child and if you are and you too will enter the kingdom of god and now let us stand and offer our prayers with great confidence to our heavenly father for all clergy may they be blessed and strengthened as they care for god's people let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for civic leaders may god's providence lead them in their work to defend the dignity of life from conception through natural death let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the sick and those who care for them may they be comforted by the presence presence of our loving god let us pray to the lord lord hear your prayer prayer for all catechists and parents who teach the word of god to young people may they be guided by the holy spirit to be living examples of god's word in the world let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for those who have died may they rest in the eternal embrace of god let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all the members of the association of marian helpers and the confraternity of the immaculate conception both living and deceased and for all the intentions they have entrusted to us as well as all those who call a right to us may the lord favorably hear their prayers and strengthen them in faith hope and love let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer and for all the silent intentions that we carry upon our own hearts and for all the souls in purgatory especially of those of priests and religious let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer we also pray for the conflict in russia and ukraine that the lord will grant his peace especially through the intercession of mary our mother the queen of peace may peace reign in that land and in our world and in our own country and in our own hearts let us pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer prayer and we entrust all these petitions to our blessed mother as we pray together hail mary full of grace the lord is with thee blessed art thou among women amen and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death amen we make all these prayers through christ our lord amen [Music] are you our god of all creations [Music] it will become for us the bread of life [Music] by the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share the divinity of [Music] christ blessed are you lord god of all creation but through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human heads that will become our spiritual drink blessed be god forever [Music] spirit and control let me be accepted by you o lord sacrifice watch me award for my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and the good of all his holy church lord as we lovingly venerate blessed mary ever virgin as queen of peace we offer you the sacrifice of reconciliation be pleased with our offering and bestow on your family the gifts of unity and peace through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father and as we honor the memory of the blessed virgin mary to proclaim with fitting praise the greatness of your name she is your lowly handmaid receiving your word from the angel gabriel and conceiving in her virginal womb the prince of peace jesus christ your son our lord she is the faithful mother standing fearless beside the cross as her son sheds his blood for our salvation and reconciles all things to himself in peace she is the disciple of christ and daughter of peace joining in prayer with the apostles as she awaits your promised gift the spirit of unity and peace of love and joy now with the saints and all the angels we praise you forever as we acclaim [Music] [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord [Music] you are indeed holy oh lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] when we [Music] drink [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and william our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command informed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always right let us offer each other the sign of peace [Music] have mercy on us have mercy on us i'm of god you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us [Music] peace [Music] peace behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the lord and my soul shall be healed first [Music] you [Music] too [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] an act of spiritual communion and thanksgiving my jesus i believe that you are present in the most blessed sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you are already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen and from the diary of saint faustina entry 705 i suffer great pain in my hands feet and and side the places where jesus's body was pierced i experience these pains particularly when i meet with a soul who is not in the state of grace then i pray fervently that the mercy of god will embrace that soul let us pray bestow on us we pray o lord the spirit of charity on this memorial of our lady queen of peace so that refreshed by the body and blood of your only begotten son we may be effective in nurturing among all the peace that he has left us who lives and reigns forever and ever amen thank you for joining us today at this morning liturgy in honor of our blessed mother in a special way i also want to invite you as well to attend either here at the shrine or online father chris will be giving a presentation at 11 a.m and his topic is going to be on penance why do we fast why do we pray why do we give alms during the lenten season and so of learning the spirit of sacrifice and and the reasons why during the lenten season so you're welcome to join us for that at 11am here this morning and may god bless you this day especially through our blessed mother's intercession our lady queen of peace the lord be with you and with your spirit and may almighty god bless you the father the son and the holy spirit amen go in peace thanks be to god saint michael the archangel defend us in battle satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking to ruin his souls amen we continue with our final prayer here as a prayer during an epidemic to the end of the coronavirus and all the difficulties associated with it lord jesus hear our pleas our good shepherd and divine physician we implore your mercy in the wake of an outbreak of serious illness and disease guide our efforts to prevent contagion and make preparations to care for those most vulnerable assist all professionals and volunteers who work to eradicate the epidemic now spreading may our actions be marked by your steadfast love and selfless service and never by panic or fear bestow your comfort and healing to the sick sustain and strengthen them by your grace may they know your closeness as they carry the cross of illness and they all you have called from this life come to worship you eternally with all the saints as you grant consolation and peace to their mourners amen holy mary health of the sick pray for us saint joseph hope of the sick pray for us in st rocco protector against epidemics pray for us [Music] help us o lord to learn the truth your word imparts to study and follow your own will inscribed upon our hearts help us o lord to live the faith that we proclaim that all of our thoughts our words and deeds glorify your name [Music] the greatest joy for me was the liberation of a young man who was 17 years old he came to me at the church this shrine and asked for help because he felt bad i began to pray and intercede for him it became evident that he was possessed there was a demonic manifestation i made an appointment for our next meeting at our next meeting god's great love and mercy were manifested because after the second prayer after the exorcism the young man was delivered when i celebrate the rite of exorcisms i also add other prayers to this rite i remember that i only recited these words eternal father i offer you the body and blood soul and divinity of your dearly beloved son our lord jesus christ in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world i only recited these words from the chaplet and he began to flee the devil fled you
