oh goodness about bulgur rot out of my hand [Applause] hey good morning everybody Chris outers catfish crazy coming from Lake Erie we're up here in Sandusky Bay got a good friend with me Anthony Murphy we're gonna be chasing channel cats using gizzard shad for cut bait stick around I don't think you want to miss this one [Music] hey welcome back everybody I'm here with my good friend Anthony Murphy Anthony thanks for joining us here on the bay today Anthony is a national tournament trail cat fisherman his his a very successful cat fisherman in my opinion but Anthony tell us a little bit about yourself how you got started and why you're into cat fishing well Chris it's been a passion of mine since I was I was real little I started in smaller rivers around home and and slowly worked my way up to where I am today nice nice so now how long have you been fishing good fishing for about 13 years at catfish and catfishing awesome and you got your start kind of channel catfishing correct yes I started channel cats and then rolled into fly heads and then here the past few years I started blue cat fishing nice now now I've been here to Bay before cat fishing and it's a phenomenal fishery you know but you've been here much many more times than I have what can we expect today well Chris you can expect channel cats averaging and eight to twelve pounds and we can see hopefully up to up to twenty or man I really hope hopefully that works out and I'm ready to get started let's get some baits in the water so let's take a minute and I want to show you guys kind of how we're going to cut our bait prepare our bait for these fish up here now like we were saying earlier Anthony I was telling you guys that there's a lot of ten pound plus fish up here so we're not going to use normally what I would normally use for channel cats around my area but I want to use bigger baits so let's take a look and kind of show you guys how we're going to cut these baits up for these bigger channel cats now the first bait I really like to do and I'm just going to kind of chunk this up into n Debates big enough that I would figure a 10 to 20 pound Channel cat would eat but the first cut is that head you know that head is a nice nice good piece of bait you know bloody oily and then I'm gonna go about a inch inch and a half on each one of these next cuts and just kind of stake them up like you would for blue cats or something then we'll just discard the rest of it now all we got to do is just get him on a hook and get some fishing about now on this bottom hook I like to take these heads you see all that blood and stuff in that head I really like that head section I'm just gonna hook it right through the bottom of the lip and out the nose now a lot of people would use a smaller hook than this for these channel cats but where they're bigger channel cats and we're after those ten pound plus fish you know I like to use bigger a little bit bigger hooks now only these Center gut sections you can kind of see the the blood and the guts are still in there I like to hook through those guts and out the belly meat to kind of help hold that blood and those guts in there just that much longer those fish smaller fish would like to come up and try to suck those guts out now to kind of help prevent it just keep out of oil and blood and they're that much longer all right now we're gonna use a couple different rigs today but I want to break this one down and kind of show you this one before we get started so to start with we just got our main line here which is a 30 pound slime line and then we've got a double crane barrel swivel with a snap down to we're using 80 pound Andy monster leader line we've got about 12 inches of line leader line before we get to our first hook and then we're just that's a DAT five seven ah d achi and this is kind of like a version of the Kentucky rig but on the bottom end of it we got a float now there's about 20 inches of leader line there down to a cylindrical Edition demon dragon and that's going to help float that bait up off the bottom and then we got another dat 5d ah qi7 out on the back of it now the reason I like this rig is it gives us two different options we got one that's going to be down close to where our weights at but then we're going to have one that's going to kind of float up and that's what this demon dragons forced to floated up off the bottom and get two different elevations if you're on a Ledge you can get those fish right on the ledge and also get the ones that are hovering just above it good little tip for you guys that are gonna be out fishing and we're casting cast into the structure of this bridge that you guys see behind us and we got a little bit of current that is that is rolling through that bridge and you know for anybody that doesn't understand current or know much about when we talk about current current can be two different driven by two different things either current from water flow or current from wind current on lakes you'll have a lot of wind current but here specifically Sandusky Bay you will have some some actual water current rolling through here and we got just a little bit I did not take long I didn't even get the other rod out Oh sandusky Bay Channel catfishing yes sir train in the background oh he's a wild one anything I've seen Oh manis fish don't know the front oh yeah nice whoo boy he made a mess everybody [Laughter] now one thing you got we need to keep in mind is just keeping these fish healthy you know we're in a great fishery and we want to you know CPR these fish these bigger fishing Oh calm down there buddy so let's get him back in the water and let him grow up a little bit I like to even though he's frisky when he's ready to go you know I like to hold him out there just a little bit let him get some good water in him watch him swim away oh yeah it don't get no better than that folks I'm telling you right now hey there he goes oh yeah hooked up again when I have a double here you know Anthony one thing I want to talk about real quick is new your tournament history you know tell tell the folks kind of a little bit about your tournament history how many tournaments every one things like that Oh Chris starting from I was uh I first started the tournament fishing down and these around home and dragged him yeah and Muskingum River and I got about a couple dozen first-place finishes along with a handful of occupies yes it is I'm gonna set this one right here in this rod holder Wynette that fish now as you were saying before we got rudely interrupted by this big old Hellcat you've done pretty good this year on that tournament trail yes right now we're sitting in second place all right let you get that one out I'm gonna get this other one oh yeah oh there we go Wow well I have to have the net on this one there we get that one out yep beautiful fish beautiful if you take a look at these fish you can see this one was long and skinny and that one he's got kind of thicker a different collar I'm holding up a male this is a male channel cat he's a big old head on them Oh long them females are usually a different there he is oh yeah what a beautiful morning I mean I tell you what get that clicker off these fish are absolutely eaten this morning oh there you go oh yeah chipper he gets him there nice oh you got
