what's up youtube top tactic fishing here welcome to another episode so i am here in our nation's capital in washington dc and we're gonna be targeting blue catfish today um you may recognize this area this is the tidal basin uh of the potomac river and i've heard a lot of good things about this area i've personally never fished it it's my first time here i was told that there's really good population of blue catfish and carp in here as well which we will target some carp as well in another video but purpose of today's video i said blue catfish and i'm gonna be using cut bait and i'm also gonna be using raw chicken um i was here one year ago not this not at this exact spot but somewhere close by on the potomac river and i did really well with the raw chicken this is something that my twin brother uses down in tennessee as well as the scenic city guide fishing service fishing charter service if you're in tennessee and chattanooga you definitely have to book a a trip with them but anyways they they're the ones who kind of started this raw chicken thing so for blue catfish and i did really well with this last time i was here last year and so we're going to do a little comparison throw some raw chicken out there and some cut bait to see what we can get all right so i brought some of my heavy duty bank [Music] bank rods here i guess you could say use these for the flat heads but um pretty much what we're going to be doing two rods are going to have cut bait one's going to have a bluegill headpiece and the other one's going to have a bluegill chunk piece and then my third rod is going to have a piece of chicken raw chicken on the hook so this is a eight foot rod baitcaster i have a musky angler baitcaster reel which is very identical to the um the bass pro shop cat max reel and 30 pound monofilament line down to carolina rig fish finder rake here actually um with an 80 pound uh leader line which you might be a little bit heavy for this area but these are from the flathead so i baller didn't i didn't bother changing the line but um i would say at least knee 30. um blue catfish i'm not sure how big they get in here i hear there are some big ones and i've seen some big ones being caught out of here so but i'm not sure if we're going to catch anything big today we may have to come back for a night fight but i'm just hoping just to get something today small little piece here but you know i always find smaller baits just typically do better in the fall and winter season so just because the bite tends to slow down i mean they get hungry but i just find just the smaller baits just do well so this will be a headpiece with catfish i always think it's good especially blue catfish i always think it's good to have another kind of bait besides just cut bait or live bait and the chicken just does well but this is going to be the head piece just like that not crazy deep here but i think when i looked on navionics in here maybe like seven feet between six to eight feet in the tidal basin it's gonna go right through the top there so this will be the second half of its body ah i think he came off i wonder if these are gar is there our gar in here there are definitely gar in here i'm gonna recast this one out there [Music] there we go there we got something on how do you play in the drag down i think this one got off yeah [Music] thanks man at least the bait's still on there that's always important there we go look at this one nice nice he's maybe like six pounds we'll get a quick picture we've actually had a lot of runs already one on the head that came off i had that that guy tried to reel in for me but we're gonna go ahead and release this blue oh there he goes so for my third rod like i said we're gonna be using the chicken which i have right here and we're gonna be using like a two odd hook anywhere between two to four is usually pretty good for the breast even smaller hooks are even fine i just find i don't want to use it i don't want to use one that's too too small but um i'm just gonna kind of cut a small piece here just like that all right all right guys we got all three of our rods out here i think it's gonna be a good day we're gonna get a lot of hits i think so we've already had one one massive run on this first one with the head that we missed and we actually had another one that we missed as well i don't know i'm using eight odd circle hooks i'm a little surprised that we're missing some runs but i don't know what else is in here these could be there could be gar in here also picking out your bait um smaller fish especially so it's kind of hard to say um first time here so but i did use a smaller hook on the chicken chicken piece from the chicken rod here so it's like a three ought hook there so all right let's see what we can get stay tuned all right that was on this was on a beat up on a beat up cut bait which i'm glad he took this one right in the corner of the mouth here guys nice blue all right man that thing was like bent small ones today so far and both have come to the uh the cut bluegill body pieces there he goes a little bit bigger around the same size but there was a subtle kind of a subtle take down foreign so all right guys there we go 12 pounds eight ounces we're gonna release this one always tail first and we did miss a fish on that cut bait cupcake's still on there though let's see if i can get my pliers out of its mouth there he goes back into the depths all right guys nothing nothing on here yet so i'm actually going to trim down the chicken a little bit um see if maybe that might help worth a shot maybe it's just a little bit big so i'm just gonna cut cut this off just a little bit not a whole whole lot but maybe that just might be a little bit easier for the fish that's pretty good cast of far out there all right guys so we've now had three blues all together two on the body pieces of bluegill and one to the bluegill head so all on cut bait so nothing on the chicken yet i'm still staying optimistic about the chicken there we go yeah he feels decent yeah nice it's a good one i'm just crossing my other line here [Music] this one's 13 13. almost 14 pounds but 13 we'll save let's say 13 pounds all right guys this is the biggest of the day so far 13 pounds all right let's release him he's ready there he goes [Music] yep another fish this one feels bigger this one was pulling some drag in the beginning yeah baby now i'm good thank you [Applause] all right i had to guess maybe six seven pounds nice one let's release this one there he goes all right oh i got a fish got a fish ah all right that's a nice blue you might be close to 10. come on man let's go let's go all right that's a nice one there she is maybe close to maybe nine pounds in her nine pounds this was on the bluegill head look at this fish there she goes back into the depths there we go finally all right finally got our first one this one's this one's on the chicken nice to finally get a blue on the chicken nice fish let's release this one so we've caught in around seven blue catfish i believe so six to the cut bait one on the chicken we'll see if the chickens can start doing some things here so that one did take a long time i put a little bit bigger piece on that one so we'll see if maybe get a little bigger one [Applause] all right on the chicken this is the second one on the chicken chicken really starting to come through when the tide's dropping or going out that is oh come over here buddy man he's really really hyper all right there we go nice blue still not getting big ones with the chicken not as big as the with the cup bait but we'll release this one there he goes let's see i think we're getting a run here see come on come on go down go down uh must be a small one if it's doing it like that there we go it doesn't fit in the rod holder that well but this is a fish on the chicken third one on the chicken that's a blue it's a blue we just hated him over here all right guys oh nice fish all right guys we're gonna call it quits for the day we uh ended up catching nine blues for the five hours that we were out a pretty good day as far as quantity the biggest blue was uh 13 pounds 13.5 pounds that is and that was uh on the cut bait on the body piece of a bluegill so six fish um we're to the cut bait and then we caught three on the chicken liv on the not chicken livers but the chicken breast um so i just really want to see what was the best bait today i really thought to be honest that the chicken breasts would do better but the cup bait did really well today especially for the quality of the fish that we got but over the last few couple hours there's been more just all on the chicken so i haven't had anything on the cut bait but um we're gonna wrap it up here i'm gonna go ahead and grab some dinner and i'm actually gonna come back for another episode and do a night bite not at this not at this exact location but we're going to go someplace probably nearby and see if we can try to hook into some more blues for a night bite as always guys give a thumbs up for this video and see you next time on top tactic fishing take care guys
