breast to breast to rest oh god i believe you're for miracles signs and wonders on today oh god i believe that you're gonna make a change on today god i believe that you're about to do something new raise them now as evidence that we stand on the word of god we know that it contains all things necessary for salvation for strength and for miracles we're certainly happy to see those of us who are able to be here this morning and for those of us who are viewing virtually the church in this house sends greetings to the church in your house your places of business your cars or wherever you may be just like to remind you again that pastor's bible study is tuesday 12 noon to 8 pm and we'd like to thank those of you who viewed our revival virtually it was a powerful revival amen on the first night we had 1597 persons worshiping and on the second night we had 1772 persons worshipping virtually like thank those of you who worship virtually and who gave and reverend bishop sir walter lee mack's presentation on his mother was heart touching profound and much needed i learned a great deal and his book that he wrote his mother wrote will be available in our own bookstore this coming week could be you it could be your relative your friend or whomever and then you might have some prayer requests as well so at this time we're going to lift up all of the needs in prayer let us look into the lord gracious kind and loving god we thank you so very much for each and every prayer request that has been submitted to us and we thank you for each and every prayer request that is on our hearts so lord we ask you right now in the name of jesus for you o god to abundantly supply whatever our need may be we know you have done it in times past we've seen your hand all over our lives all over our church and for that we say thank you so god we ask you right now in the name of jesus to move on our situation and our circumstance for the bereaved families oh god we pray that you would be the very lifter of their heads for that one who is in the hospital we pray oh god that you will be the healing bomb in gilead that they so desperately need for that one who is having some type of financial struggle we thank you god that you always always make a way and god for any other person who's going through whatever they are going through i don't know about it but you know about it and more importantly you can do something about it so god we say thank you for intervening in our lives you're such an awesome god such a mighty god such a majestic god such a miracle working god and we say thank you and lord we pray for our pastor as you used him at this very hour that you would anoint him with fresh oil from the crown of his head to the very soles of his feet that you oh god get the glory on this day save somebody heal somebody deliver somebody set the cap that's free and lord we wouldn't be saint philip if we didn't always give you the praise that we did always give you the glory if we did always give you honor because praise is what we do praise is who we are and god we say thank you for allowing us to worship in your throne this day it's in the mighty name of jesus we pray amen and amen we thank you for the heartfelt and fervent prayers that have already gone forth i thank you for the intercession made on behalf of this your servant now we pray that the words of our mouth and meditation of our heart will be acceptable in your sight o lord our strength our redeemer that it will bless and empower your people we pray o god that nothing absolutely nothing will more interfere with diminished distract take away from either word or worship this day to your glory end to your honor nothing more nothing less and nothing else you pray that you would bring forth the fruit the harvest and the response that you desire your glory into your honor nothing more nothing less and nothing else in jesus name amen this morning we direct your attention to two passages of scripture acts chapter 15 verses 4 through 11. when they came to jerusalem they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders and they reported all that god had done with them but some believers who belong to the sect of the pharisees stood up and said it is necessary for them to be circumcised in order to keep the law of moses the apostles and the elders met together to consider this matter and after there had been much debate peter stood up and said to them my brothers you know that in the early days god made a choice among you that i should be the one through whom the gentiles would hear the message of the good news and become believers and god who knows the human heart testified to them by giving them the holy spirit just as he did to us and in cleansing their hearts by faith he has made no distinction between them and us now therefore why are you putting god to the test by placing on the neck of the disciples a yoke that neither ourselves nor we have been able to bear on the contrary we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the lord jesus just as they will and then we direct your attention as a supporting scripture to matthew chapter 14 verses 28 through 33. peter answered him lord if it is you command me to come to you on the water he said come so peter got out of the boat started walking on the water and came toward jesus but when he noticed the strong wind he became frightened and beginning to sink he cried out lord save me jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him saying to him you have little faith why did you doubt when they got into the boat the wind ceased and those in the boat worshiped him saying truly you are the son of god the word of god for the people of god those of you who are standing may be seated in the presence of the lord we continue our series on vision for growth and today we focus on the subject keeping the main thing the main thing i'm convinced that many of us are unfulfilled in life because we have allowed secondary and ancillary issues to take our attention away and drain us from our efforts to make and keep the main thing the main thing in matthew 28 verses 16 through 20 and acts 1 8 jesus described his vision for the church in in matthew 28 he said go forth and make disciples of all nation baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit teaching them to observe everything i have commanded you and remember i am with you always even to the ends of the earth in acts 1 8 he said you shall receive power when the holy spirit has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses in jerusalem in all judea submarine to the utmost parts of the earth the vision of the jesus for the church was that it would be an international organism not organization organization is a structure an organism is a growing entity and that it would claim and rescue and redeem those who had considered to be either foreign outsiders are not as close to those who had been identified as the people of god and as the church sought to fulfill the mandate of christ it met with success as it was faithful to the vision of the lord it was success i used to say that god does not require us to be successful but faithful i don't say that anymore because i believe that god expects us to be successful and faithful as a flower grows from a stem so success grows from faithfulness if we are faithful we will see in studying we will succeed in reaching our educational goals if we are faithful in prayer we will succeed in receiving the favor of god if we study the word of god faithfully we will be successful in discerning and learning what the word really said rather than being tossed about by every strange win and doctrine and if we are faithful in the tithe we will receive overflow that only heaven can give that cannot always be measured in dollars and cents i i hadn't planned on telling this but may i tell you again one of my favorite stories that when i was in in my 20s i was pastoring of this older lady by the name of mother hannah harris and mother harris was the kind of person who um would always give you a call during your birthday and anniversary two dollars and that she she did that to everybody and yet mother hannah harris always lived in a senior citizen's building in meager surroundings and never had a lot of excess wealth and and i went to the lord one day and i said you know god i've been saying that if you are faithful in giving that you will receive overflow mother harris has been giving and giving and giving for years and and she's still living in this same apartment and i remember it the day as it was yesterday was a clear sunny day and i was had pulled up to the traffic light in my new cadillac and um i was directly across from the building where mother hannah harris lived and as a bus was pulling off i saw mother harris running to catch the bus mother harris was in her 80s and she was not walking not trying to flash the bus down she was running to catch the bus and i heard the lord clearly say that's her overflow [Applause] in her right mind didn't wear glasses that was her overflow that that that when we are faithful god will give us success in ways perhaps that we have not anticipated and and because they the disciples were faithful uh god had granted them success in reaching gentiles and and whenever you bring in new people they have new questions and they bring forth new issues and so as they joined the church there were those who said well it's good that you're bringing in all these people but but they must be circumcised and they must observe the tradition and the laws that we've always kept and and and that was what the church was wrestling with was it necessary for gentile believers who were new to be circumcised was it necessary for them to obey all of the jewish dietary regulation was it necessary for them to worship in the traditions of those first christians all of whom were converted jews and the church wrestled with that and it reached the proper conclusion found in in acts 15 um chapter verse 8 as as stated by peter verse 10 excuse me now therefore why are you putting god to the test by placing on the neck of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear on the contrary we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the lord jesus just as they will they reach the conclusion that the main thing was jesus christ and that everything else was ancillary and secondary and that they were calling people to follow jesus not tradition i would submit to you that many of us wrestle with the same issue will jesus be our main thing or have we allowed other things to become our main thing we started off in our career with a vision but over the course of time we allowed our personal political goals to take our attention away from the vision god has for our lives that is still greater than any vision we can have for ourselves or others can have for us we started off feeling excited about being a leader and now our attention has been directed to our own turf guarding power and our clips and our clubs we we started off uh being excited about worship and now we worship as we watch our watches because our attention is focused on what we got to do when worship is over have we as believers allowed sports to become my main thing i mean i just am amazed when a losing team like the falcons i'm amazed that y'all get upset when i call them losing since that's what they're doing when we allow the falcons the hawks the braves to be the main thing and we base our attendance and our watching service on when they gonna play what does it say when when 90 000 people will pay huge amounts of money to watch a losing team and we as the people of god complain about a dime out of dollar grumble if the free space is not as close to the door as we want [Applause] and come up with not legitimate reasons but any old excuse to stay away from the house have we allowed what should be our main thing have we allowed our new love to become our main thing to the point that we are hesitant to uh ex really praise god if they show up let me just tell you be careful about becoming too close and tied in with anybody who gets offended and weary when you give your testimony about what the lord has done for you be careful about becoming tied up with anybody that you are not comfortable if they see you praise for blessings that they can't give and have nothing to do with have we allowed being accepted by our uh sororities fraternities and and other exclusive social snobby clubs to become our main thing so that we jump through hoops and when they call we answer have we that and it can happen to anybody and that's why every morning i've already informed you every morning i pray psalm 139 23 24 search me oh god know my heart trust try me and know my mind see if there is any wicked way in me have i allowed secondary stuff to interfere with my relationship with you so search me then lead me in the way everlasting if if we're not careful we will lose our main thing in the midst of our success i about 40 years ago i served as pastor of a young lady who had recently be gotten a divorce that that in that small community she and her former husband looked like the ideal couple and and she came to me and wanted me to know her story she said pastor when we uh got married we decided that we wanted to have a major house and we have planned it down to the detail we saved our money and it was just everything we thought it would be the problem was that when we moved into the house we discovered that we had built a house but not a home [Applause] we had appliances but no anointing we had comfort but no conversation we had parties but no prayer we had rooms but no romance we had space but no smiles we had furnishings but no fun and she said the alliteration was mine but but she said pastor we discovered that we had put a house before the love that drew us together and she said it became such a burden on my spirit that i walked away and my family and my friends could not understand how i could walk away and leave everything to him but you said pastor i wanted peace so much i wanted my freedom so much i wanted my joy back so much that i was willing to leave everything so that i could get back the main things that were in my life am i talking to anybody this morning if we're not careful in our efforts to grow we can allow what is secondary to become our main thing we can and and and the more we are successful we become the more focused we have to be on our main thing it can also happen in the midst of challenges that that sometimes problems themselves and challenges themselves can take our attention off of our main thing and and and it seems to me that was the problem with peter in the in in the text that he it was storming when jesus invited peter to get out of the boat the rhythm was already rough but he looked at jesus and said lord if it's you telling me to come i'll get out and he was walking on the water and the word says when he took his eyes off of jesus and paid more attention to the wind and the rain at that point he began to sing i just need to tell somebody that trials and tribulations will come in the midst of our successful walking on the water but keep your eye on the main thing on jesus because god is able in the midst of your storm if you keep your eye on him to reach down because you become hear me what you focus on [Music] you you can't walk in the vision focusing on your naysayers and your credits you can't walk in the vision focusing on your past mistakes you can't walk in the vision that god has and stay on top trying to get back at people who tried to do you in and fail that's why that's why you have to be patient with some people who keep jumping up and giving god praise and making noise because their testimony is that i was in the storm and they were coming at me and i'm still standing and i'm still walking and i'm still have my eyes [Applause] they've learned the truth of hebrews 12 considering we are surrounded by such a great crowd of witnesses let us lay aside every weight and the sin that does so easily beset us let us run with patience the race that is set before us looking unto jesus the author and perfecter of our faith who for the joy that was set before him despise the cross endureth the shame and the sat down at the right hand of god the father god has more jobs to give than the one you got keep your eye on jesus he has somebody else for you other than the one that hurt you keep your eye on jesus because if he were saved because he kept the main thing the main thing redemption was the main thing and at the beginning of his ministry satan came to him and and after he had been fasted for 40 days said you hungry turn these stones to bread but jesus said my main thing is not bread but breakthrough and then he said jump down from the temple and you'll get fame and he said my main thing is not fame but faithfulness and then he showed them the kingdoms of the world and said bow down and worship me and he said get behind me because my main thing is not riches but righteousness when his family tried to turn him around he said my main thing is not relatives but redemption and when peter told him that the cross was not for him he told him my main thing is not the cross but the crown that comes after it and so they hung him high and they stretched him wide but he kept his eye on his father they buried him but earlier sunday morning the god who was his main thing raised him to stoop no more and not only did he raise him to stoop no more he gave him a name that is above every name that at the name of jesus every knee shall bow every tongue shall confess that jesus christ is lord to the glory of god keep jesus as your main thing you know when i was a when i was a boy my my daddy's mother mother leona watley used to say when you get in trouble call on the one you've been serving well when you get in trouble call on the sports team you've been following when you get in trouble call on your money to get you out of when you get in trouble call on the people that you've been denying the lord for trying to impress but but i got some other questions to ask you when you get in trouble is your main thing able to get you out and bring you through as more than a conqueror when you get sick can your main thing heal you or give you grace that is sufficient and strength that is made perfect in weakness when you are lost in sin on your way to a devil's hell can your main thing pick you up and set your feet up on the street called straight down and when your way gets blocked and your enemies come upon you can your main thing make a way out of nowhere and even now in this low land of sorrow has your main thing going before you into glory to prepare a home for you where the wicked ceased from troubling and the weary are at rest and as we used to say you'll be howdy howdy and never goodbye he has to be the main thing that's what that writer was saying when he said jesus is all the world to me my life my joy my all years my strength from day to day without him i would fall when i am sad to him i go no other one can cheer me so when i am sad he makes me glad he's my my my my mind can i just go across the field and say it like this can't nobody do me like jesus can't nobody do me like the lord can't nobody do me like jesus he's my friend that's why he's my main [Music] nobody can't nobody do me like jesus [Music] yeah yeah yeah we we don't see this there's another reason why he's my main thing [Music] because jesus is on the main line when you get in trouble all you got to do tell them when you sit and can't get well call them up and [Music] [Applause] [Music] the main thing is on the main line call them up and tell them jesus is on the main line forth now god we pray that you would bring the hardest whatever harvest you bring we'll be careful to give you the praise in jesus name my brother my sister if you're here and your main line is
