pastor john gray just made a surprising announcement that had many in his congregation stunned as you may know pastor john gray has garnered national attention including some praise and some criticism since moving to greenville south carolina in 2018 and forming relentless church he leapt to fame while serving as the associate pastor under joel osteen at lakewood church in houston texas where he still preaches on occasion he and his wife also starred for three seasons on a show on the oprah winfrey network called the book of john grey that highlighted his pastoral duties and mentoring to those in need he has been in a lengthy legal dispute over property rights between relentless and redemption church and pastor ron carpenter then in 2019 he drew national criticism when he bought his wife aventa a 200 000 lamborghini is an eighth wedding anniversary gift and shared the exchange on instagram just last year he admitted to having an emotional affair with a woman other than his wife now pastor john gray and his wife are in the news for a very different reason on sunday january 24th the 47 year old pastor made a surprising announcement to his church congregation in greenville south carolina according to a church spokesperson while preaching a sermon entitled intentional generosity pastor john gray informed members of the congregation that the offering baskets typically used to collect donations for the church were instead being used to provide donations members in attendance were invited to take what they needed from the donation baskets in an effort to help members overcome financial hardships incurred by the coronavirus pandemic these donation baskets contained money and were passed around to congregation attendees fewer members than usual were in attendance at the mega church given kovid 19. restrictions in total relentless church donated more than 30 000 to church members on january 24th in addition in an effort to assist members who continue to face difficulty relentless church has committed additional funds for future donations and will include members who join the service online as well in greenville south carolina and across the country many have experienced economic hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic pastor john gray said our calling is to be consistently generous and prayerful for the welfare of our community we know that these unprecedented times deserve unprecedented generosity and our focus continues to remain in making a difference in the lives of those we serve last year relentless church launched a number of initiatives to give back to the greater greenville south carolina community including free laundry services to community members drive-by grocery giveaways and a to school drive in a similar move back in november 2018 pastor gray invited veterans widows single mothers and fathers to the front of his church and instructed him to take what they needed from the sunday offering during service speaking about the november 2018 giveaway chuck fuller an associate professor of christian studies at anderson university in south carolina cautioned that giving away a collected offering in this fashion could project an image of a truly giving selfless and open community but it could also cause people who give to become reluctant to give without oversight nevertheless on january 24 2021 members who took money as instructed were overjoyed and grateful for the help during their time of financial need and anxiety as pastor gray explained it relentless we are deeply honored to help provide much needed relief for members of our community and church our people are resilient but many of them are still facing hardship and we cannot fail them in this critical hour to stay up to date on news that impact the christian community be sure to subscribe to the inspirational gospel music channel on youtube there you will find music that will uplift encourage and inspire you
