Ryan Gosling Breaks Down 'The Gray Man' Scenes | Freeze Frame

that's a very nice room i don't usually like to do interviews in rooms that are more interesting than i am but i'll do it this once hello i'm ryan gosling and i'm going to be talking through some of the clips from the gray man for british esquire you must be loyal we'll give it away it makes you think i want to do it again this this clip is entitled trash stash okay okay yeah immediately as i watch this you must i would react differently to the pepper spray if i were to do it again kind of like how i said esquire british esquire i probably put too much on esquire i think probably should have had a stronger reaction it looks like i'm getting sprayed with avion which is what's happening um you live you learned you must be lloyd i gave it away the white pants the trash dash it's just well first of all okay there were lots of lines here we you know the russo brothers like you to improvise a lot so my this trash dash improvisation made the cut but my favorite did not which i think was um something like how do you know i'm lloyd because you look like all the new kids had an old kid this was my first scene with chris and you know a hero was only as good as the villain and we showed up with the mustache and the white pants and i knew we were in we were in good shape this was going to be a lot of fun it's also my first time leaving a room through the window i would do that differently too my body position is it goes a little universal stunt show on my end they save it because they cut out a bit quickly yeah just when i was a kid that was we were all trying to grow them you know it's all you could grow was a trash dash i should lie down for this trauma-based chris that was just sort of like um we did have a big fight scene at the end of the movie which we did spend a lot of a lot of time on i did chris memorized it immediately um sometimes but um in this situation i think i was very professional they're saying otherwise they're saying i was unprofessional i'm just thinking about when that snl clip with you with kate mckinnon well that's different another one of these idiots was just like what's that when kate mckinnon is sitting on your head looking for the source of the tear and i was like hey last guy who did that got double barrel pink eye and she's not supposed to it's a little different you know i've always wanted to make an action movie but uh you know there's a lot of good ones and a lot of great action characters so sort of finding the right team you know the russo brothers have been doing this for a decade at marvel and killing it so i felt like i'm new here this is uh uh these are i can just go along for the ride i was comfortable with them driving and then the character was just i thought you know a fun twist because he doesn't want to be a spy and he he'd rather be home watching tv and he doesn't want to be in this movie so that was like a fun that was a fun thing to to play with this was a long way to go son this was something that they wish this was the last thing we shot the scene and it was based after reshoots and then they i had to go back to the trailer to kind of de-age and they said you know just basically like to see you like 20 years ago or something so i thought it would be a great idea to shave steps into my side of my head and my eyebrows and then i right on my way to said i texted them i was like hey how about steps and they were like oh no that's terrible idea don't do that that won't that won't be good at all but i already had regrets well i'm just gonna cut to the chase my name is donald fitzroy and i'm here to commute your sentence this i'll tell you something this i was trying the whole this this was supposed to end in me blowing a bubble so i spent the whole scene chewing this massive piece of bubble gum all for the payoff of the bubble which they cut out so it just looks like i'm housing this bubble gum and it's just very distracting i thought the bubble would have just like the proper paint and walk out of this prison you walk with me i would have cheated no offense i thought you'd look different i may be we'll see what's the catch you work for us who's us the cia we're gonna train you to kill bad guys and since you've already killed one it shouldn't be too difficult it makes you think i want to just wait too much gum billy bob's giving such a great performance i'm just chewing chewing the scenery i think it adds to it so what's that i think it adds to it you don't have to say that i do because i think that he you know what what a lot of these characters want is they want you know either revenge or money or power or information or something but what six wants is to be free so i think it's that's what i liked about this character and thought you know you could root for him because you you could i you know you would want that's a that's something we can all identify with amazing i've been a fan of his for such a long time he's an amazing actor director super just fun to work with this dynamic in the movie is really important because his character is obviously like you know he's very remote he doesn't have a lot of connections you know we don't have a lot of time to spend on on those connections so you just you immediately like billy bob and and you come as an audience with such an affection for him anyway so it was just great casting because you immediately understand kind of things that you we don't have time to to cultivate in the movie are you ready for the next one i don't think so oh but let's go the clip is called let's go nice try pumpkin sorry why you want my foot in your ass ah [ __ ] let's go i'm good let's go sounded like a question how'd you find me you make a lot of noise hey open it this was fun because a lot of people right above the frame there's all these people sitting in their windows drinking coffee watching us shoot the scene where was it show up in prague and i thought they should have included them because that was i feel like they would have been watching this anyway so you know but um this is another situation where anna darmis is saving me thank god if it wasn't for her i would not be alive for a potential sequel and it was super fun to work with her again because we did a movie before but you know i was a robot and she was a hologram so it was limited and it was fun to play people not the trunk get in i could really use a comfortable chair right now this was fun trying to figure out how this would go down you know getting hit with a dart like that and falling into his trunk it led to two more days being in a hot trunk in frog which was not as much fun but anna de armas fun fact is a wonderful driver so she was actually driving she drove yes she's very good driver and i felt very safe yes absolutely she was amazing at the action she's very funny you know she it was so fun to work with her like in this context because again the other thing we did together was was was a cool experience but we we didn't really get to work together you know i mean in a sense like literally sometimes i because there were played shots she wouldn't even be in the scene or i wouldn't be in the scene so yeah um but you know it's a great character and you know there could be a film just about her character after this i i think it's great because i think this movie would be ken's favorite movie why do you think that he just ken would love agreement ken wants all of these clothes ken wants that track soon also you're bringing a new ken to life and maybe having a kendo brain isn't such a bad thing i don't think so at all i'm very proud of mike energy they recognized it and that's you know good for them yeah it's palpable you're feeling it right oh a hundred percent yeah yeah i love like the marie condo style of acting or if it sparks joy you do it if you can thank you for watching my esquire therapy session
