facing his third consecutive left-handed opponent Bell round one scheduled for 10 at 140 pounds and Russell known for his explosive starts immediately takes the fight to bartella me and already going to the body and upstairs already diversifying his attack out you know in his last six fights tracked by show stats he's landed 159 punches in the first round compared to only 51 for his opponent he's a fast starter we're seeing it right here when you include the postal fight 37 and a half percent of his connects are to the body well above the nearly 30 percent average in the division and goes to the body with the left and the right and now we're also seeing more telling me in this first round willing to trade against the heavy-handed Russell I would I would think that he you know especially in this first round when he would come and use that reach oh nice combination you're right Abner with the talk was if Bartell me were to be successful that would be his best mode of attacking again utilizing the pedigree from the Cuban box school but he told us he says he needs to bounce back he knows this is an opportunity to restore some of the luster of his career knocking off a guy who has has to take that jab away from Russell and by telling me it switches to Lefty Russell has never faced the Lefty as a professional certainly is an amateur but not as a professionals watch ahead by the Francis bartellomi well for Gary Antoine Russell he's had to deal with some adversity here in the first round nice right hand by about telling me that really got his attention and he continues to get his attention bartellomi now coming forward and yet the IQ of Russell on display when he was hurt by holding on WOW he heard Russell again right at the end of that round [Music] up and down keep your hands up and inside he's trying to wait for a moment that we would have thought round one this is Russell Landing a good left hand early and a right hook doing very well early on as he often does but Dunbar telling me look at him I mean that is a strong right hand no wonder Russell was stunned and then at the end of The Run Russell had a had a good moment with the left hand there but right at the end of the round also bartellomi hurt him with another punch by far the biggest shot that Gary Antoine Russell has been hit with in his burgeoning career he's never been down as a pro but dealing with adversity from Rancis barthelemy who has 15 wins of his own but now Russell coming out aggressively going to work to the body and upstairs on bartelli lead right up lands upstairs yeah we're also definitely trying to make his statement make it prove to Bar telling me that he wasn't hurt he's that you know he's got the power now Russell needs to throw more straight punches because bar telling me you know he gets a little crazy in there he's not in the overhand right right there so Russell with the straight punch will get him first nice series of left hands as Russell stepped to the right barthelemy found his success as a righty even though he switches back and forth so he might want to stay as a righty a little bit more and use that right hand as he did and bar telling me telling us that he knows Russell someone who comes forward he likes to be more of a counter puncher and Boyd landed a sweet right hand in the opening frame one minute gone here in round two and Russell now trying to build behind the jab his brother his chief second telling him do not be lackadaisical [Applause] now we see where it's enemy switching left and I think that that's honestly I think that's money he does more damage against Russia yeah I do I stand correctly midpoint of the second stands up so papa telling me flicking away at the jab Russell continues to make the investment to the body combination upstairs when you go back when he goes back to right he eats a lot of the left hands from Russell and more than Bartell me but barthelemy has had the the most eye-catching shot of the fight which is really strange because he's not known as the PowerPoint no he's not final minute of the second bartellomi along the ropes both of them going to the body beautiful right hook from from Russell he's got to follow it up now with the left hand straight down the middle of course that considered to be one of the biggest enemies of the South Park are telomies had himself a decent start did but it was more they pushed that or tell him who gave him but you know he did not uh hesitate to go on top of them now Russell got to uh you know go back to to be more relaxed I think he's uh he's putting too much power on those punches and they're coming in slow it's got to relax a little bit more in this round I want to correct myself I said Henry cuer it is Orlando Orlando cuer who is the trainer of bartellomi who worked with him in the beginning of his career you know we're seeing good body work by both men and barthelemy is Russell beginning to put together some combinations and and yeah Russell with the big Edge as one would expect although like you mentioned that bartender some success a Midway point of the third round you want young fighters to be tested Abner and Gary Antoine Russell that's a good fight it's a good fight well tested you know against bar telling me but telling me doing the right things right now he's boxing more but you know he's waiting a little bit too long he's got a counter right right off that you know those punches from Russell flicks his jab while Russell faints tries to get in good short right hand of the body by bartella me teachers like that right off the jab for telling me king with that hook barthelemy has a knack for slowing fights down and to some degree he's even done that a little bit here only 30 some punches thrown by Russell in this round that's rare for him yeah both of them right now credited with the throwing well 39 and Russell 38 so you're right Al he's definitely muting the offense of Gary Antoine Russell although Russell leads with a right hook upstairs and this is a close round yeah now and the reason he's doing that is because barthelemy has a response for every punch that Russell has so he's making him think more okay with more on the 140 pound division let's go to Steve farhood oh the only current champion at 40 right now Scotland's Josh Taylor earlier this year he was an Undisputed champion in February he got catered by controversial decision it might be a rematch or killer Michael 147 pounds and we take a look at the notable competitors at 140 with a win tonight obviously Russell or Bartholomew would at least be close to a title shot and by the way Russell says he will make 135 of them on August 20 on Showtime Alberto puello and bet year agmedov will fight for the vacant WBA title the Norman champ Jose Ramirez is expected to fight Jose cicada for the bank of wspp time but lots of talent in this position we're looking to see a lot of that Talent on Showtime absolutely chocolate do heavily influence the the reason the pound for pound lists exist Sugar Ray Robinson loved kid chocolate and uh well kid blast and his fans they had to love the the first round and he's hung he's been very competitive in this fight it's been you know we mentioned that he has a wave kind of deadening fights but this one even when he's controlled the pace it's still been interesting and Russell sitting down on his punches free punch combination you know Gary Russell Jr his brother did a wonderful job in his fight against Victor postal working as the lead trainer for the first time in his brother's corner and and I credit him with making that fight a more dominant win for for his brother because he's the one that urged Russell to use his right hook more often and tonight we're seeing that punch uh from him Gary Russell Jr had surgery on his shoulder doesn't know when he will return to action but is definitely enjoying his role as the chief second in the midst of the loss of the patriarch another good combination yeah you know Bartholome uh you've landed a lifestyle and uh from the southwest stance there yeah and I was about to mention that Russell was using paints and he was being more defensively responsible he hated I left but he is you know Russell is he's trying something different in this round of course he did that because you were thinking [Music] this has been a decent round for us telling me Oh right up our left uppercut landed for barthelemy and he's uh making it rough and tumble for under a minute left in the fourth and we talked about going softball man it tells he's trouble when he's softball yeah I'm with you on that one Abner and barthelemy sitting down on punches goes back to orthodox and you know this match is being fought at a certain Pace again they're on Pace to throw a little over 40 some punches around that's not what Gary Antoine Russell likes to be in terms again he knows the experience for about telling me every every time he he throws something or he wants Russell to stop throwing he makes him some other the punches he gets he gets him really close yeah there it is back goes to the body oh man great exchanges what a fight man who the [ __ ] it huh halfway he's leaving that's it he's gone how are you feeling you're good setting it up and blasts in a beautiful left hand he did that several times Russell came back with his own left hand a little later that one of beauty uh and they banged heads on top of all that thankfully they didn't get uh a cut from it that was an active and exciting round and this man knows he's in a fight round five barthelemy again working with his original trainer Orlando Cuellar who's helped him work his body work trench warfare effective fighting against distance we've seen examples of that here tonight he said I'm bringing him in with this a game and he and the Orlando Claire is about being more aggressive listening Johnson all those years and man he was Mr aggression yes light heavyweight champions Johnson and Antonio Tarver but doing good work with Francis bartella Mia's Russell trying to find the distance pops off a left uppercut on the inside to the face of bartellomi and what's happening in this fight obviously aside from the experience that we're telling me has he has a response every time and Russell's not used to that Russell juicy Landing a hard shot and damaging Fighters and you know Russell's doing a lot of good work in there oh yeah no doubt no question but the wave are telling me is fighting this fight is kind of surprising men are gone in the fifth statistically speaking Russell still ahead but again picking up that experience that is necessary and we of course talked to everyone how would he respond yeah having lost his father he said he's still obviously grieving how would he Channel it I think that Russell needs to stay take a little step back take a breather and recollect himself and and be smarter and as far as how he comes in she's not throwing that jab anymore right good point that's a great Point speaking of being smart he says that he's able to carry multiple game plans and adjust on the Fly that's what he feels is what separates him from his opponents but bar telling me is right there and both of them exchanging Russell now trying to unload on bartolome leaning in on Russell and the right Rook is back for Russell yeah and and that's a big punch for him uh he started to throw it again let those punches flow at first he was he was overpowering the punches overloading on the punches final minute of the fifth lead right hook upstairs and the jab left from Russell but again now if you look at the numbers I mean they are neck and neck in terms of throne and even punches landed in this round another very close round and again Russell isn't just fascinating it really is I mean they are exchanging blow for blow and in my case I had Bertelli but you don't want to sit and trade with the heavy-handed Russell but it's working for him right and we are at the Midway point of 700 and between the undefeated Gary Antoine Russell and former two division champ Francis let's check in with Jim Gray Danny fight begins in the plot thickens so much to talk about in the first half of that fight Out Boy there is and you know that fifth round I think could be an interesting round very close round you don't know how the judges are going to see it uh but it was an intriguing round and I I still believe that one of the things that Russell may need to do more is get that right hook going and he started in experience working his 246 professional fight has just stopped the fight you're here Orlando prayer he's upset drawn the higher yeah they're telling me corner there's no need to go against the corner the Right Hook from Russell hard to land that from outside so wide he did it right and and you made the point it was not easy for him to land but he got it in and clearly great punch it hurt by telling me it put him down and then the next part of the story is where the controversy comes in and I also was fairly early in the round right so certainly bar telling me could have been in trouble the rest of the round but we would like to know whether he was going to be seeing that's the thing now we won't get to know all right let's listen to the referee at the time of the knockdown let's listen to referee murdon what he was saying [Applause] five six seven eight look to me [Applause] [Music] Francis bartellomi has just tasted defeat [Music] yeah we look at the final numbers here and you can see this was a competitive and interesting fight for sure the 46 victim Power Punch is landed by Russell very impressive he does that it's part of his signature he got his right hook working in this fight and that was ultimately what ended up stopping the fight though many would feel not appropriately what a way for Gary Russell's knockout streak to continue he's 16-0 with 16 Knockouts great sportsmanship here again they both heard each other ladies and gentlemen we have the time of 50 seconds in round number six our referee in charge stops the contest he is the winner by way of technical knockout and still defeated Gary and Russell look to the heavens and said we did it Dad Gary Antoine Russell remains undefeated 16-0 16 Knockouts showcase the power with that right hook but this decision will be debated in terms of the referee stopping the fight when he did especially as to how competitive it was but let's talk to the winner here's Jim Gray all right Moro thank you very much ask the referee for a comment he will not speak and the New York State athletic commission had no comment at this time they want to speak to Chade Murrah the referee before they make any comment on this we turned out to you Gary congratulations on the victory did you feel the fight should be stopped first and foremost I want to thank God uh I want to tell my father up above is Washington I did it for you we're going to keep it going Pops I want to thank Charlie for allowing this all to go around I want things showtime for putting on this the show and let me participate in it um as far as the fight go I know Francis Bartholomew and myself we are a high grade class athletes and emotions got high whether you got bruises hurting or not you're gonna have a gladiator spirit so with that being said I know he wanted to continue by the doctor and the referee was doing their job um if they would have let the fight continue I'm pretty sure later on down the road or later in the rounds just same outcome would have been been a um I just want to thank him as well for giving me the opportunity I'm gonna keep going to the to the Forefront I'm gonna keep going that's what we're doing the ultimate revenge is success and that's what we're striving for you just paid tribute to your father this the first fight since his passing uh and obviously it's it's a very difficult time for you your brothers and your family can you describe what it was like to not have his presence uh it's the first of many um it had me tunnel vision they had me a little eerie but I know I still had to get a job done something that my father instilled into all of us no matter what going on in life we gotta continue you know certain things are just inevitable uh life and death those are two things that's definitely inevitable um he raised us to be men well-rounded man thorough I think being thorough means to be well-rounded he prepared this for not just boxing but life outside of boxing and enduring these type of pain this type of pain is something that everybody got to go through and not everybody are prepared for those type of pressure and he prepared us to go through these type of pain trials and tribulations so I thank my father I thank my family and like I said I did what I had to do he did an excellent job let's take a look now as we make the transition back to the fight and tell us from your Vantage Point what happened here in the sixth round in the fight sixth round I had him backing up Southpaw I knew he was going to try to look for his right cross and I caught him back in know right on top he was going to my hook hand I shot my hook heard him put him down as you can see right there he's still kind of buzzed up but the warrior mindset one of them keep moving he wanted to keep going because it's just his mentality he's a warrior Gary congratulations thank you for your time thank you thank you thank you Francis and Felix De Jesus will translate and trainer Cuellar will join us as well did you feel the fight should be stopped um definitely I mean no no they shouldn't have stopped the fight I mean this is not the first time I've fallen and I've gotten up I felt good just it was a good shot I'm not denying that but you should have not stopped the fight what did you say to the referee and what was his explanation to you application I'm fine I'm good to go in Orlando you exchanged words with him as well you were very unhappy I'm very unhappy of course this was a very good fight that these fans paid a lot of money to come and see it was a pull-down drag out old school fight how can you take it away from a man that's on his last leg he's on his last leg this man is a two-time world champion he's been down before and he's been up and he's fought on how can you rob not only the fighter but the fans of what could have been a great fight you're supposed to give your fighter Gary Russell supposed to let him fight you want to see what kind of character Gary Russell or Gary Antoine Russell has well this was a chance for Gary Antoine Russell to show that character but you robbed not only Gary Antoine Russell because it was a gimme but you also rubbed the
