evening 12 rounds of boxing for the wba super lightweight championship of the world and now ladies and gentlemen in attendance and boxing fans joining us around the world live from atlanta georgia it's showtime introducing you first the challenger on my right fighting out of the blue corner tonight seeking his third division world title wearing white trunks with yellow and silver trim the young star of boxing from baltimore and representing his adopted home of atlanta georgia he weighed in at 139 and three-quarter pounds with a sensational record of 24 wins no losses he has 23 big wins coming by way of knockout ladies and gentlemen here is the popular and acclaimed three-time two-division world champion the hard-hitting current and undefeated wba super featherweight and wba lightweight champion of the world introducing uh jervontay [Applause] [Music] world champion fighting out of the red corner wearing pink trunks with blue and gold trim joining us from the beautiful city of san antonio texas he weighed in at 139 and one half pounds he is undefeated in his campaign to the ring with a record of 26 wins no losses 17 wins coming by way of knockout tonight making the high with gervante tank davis daring to be great against by far the biggest opponent he's faced mario barrios someone's always gotta go here in the atl you ready ready the bell and round the one davis the softball in the white with yellow and silver trunks barrios in pink and blue with gold trim farios is very jab centric 49 of his punches are in fact jabbed he didn't do that enough against mattier akhmadov in a fight that was as we've pointed out tonight so close for him he wants to use that punch tonight in 24 bouts davis has never faced a foe as tall as barrios or with as long a reach he's on a 15 fight ko streak in fact the last fight to hear the final bell took place nearly seven years ago a six-round decision win over the durable hermann marazz in october of 2014. now alvaro is doing something that i i kind of figured he would do which is walk david's back and you know you want to keep uh davis back on your back on the back foot davis not really a well a good fighter backing fighting backwards so you definitely want to keep on going backwards especially with the jab at a good range you don't want to over commit either with davis leo santa cruz of course much smaller than barrels tried to push davis back uh with a little success earlier but obviously he ultimately walked into a monstrous punch yeah davis scored the ring magazine 2020 knockout of the year with that lethal left uppercut stopping santa cruz for the first time in his career and yet davis telling us despite all of the hype with his prodigious power in the lower weights that he thinks this is the fight where he is going to showcase his sweet science which i know will make his mentor floyd mayweather smile you know davis normally lands 37 of his punches of his punches that are landed for the body he hasn't been in a position to throw to the body yet but i know he wants to get there and you could tell right away the reach how much it's affecting davis davis just missed those that one too just with the simple fact that barry was able to step step back and with that jab long reach yeah barrios the tall ranging boxer puncher usually gradually breaks down most of his opposition from the outside but has his natural instincts to want to get on the inside and not utilize his height and reach and make it a firefight but against a guy like davis you want to use that jab like you said al yeah he wants that punch to be out there and not bend in and not give davis a chance to land maybe a big powerful overhand left [Music] davis blocked that right hand from barrios davis double pumps the jab just looking to use it as a range fighter trying to find a way to close mayweather the hall of famer heavily invested in the career of giovante tank davis taking in the adulation from the crowd here in atlanta keith's the victory for these two men uh he wants to pedroza him he beat jose pedraza to win the title he bullied him work the body get inside and land shots to the body the uppercut is if he can get inside he has one of the best in boxing fight tall stay on the outside don't bend it land the counter right hand when davis is coming inside and he has a good uppercut especially his left uppercut [Music] working his 11th fight with the respective virgil hunter who knows how to teach range and defense and seems to be a good fit for the aztec warrior yeah virgil hunter of course a wonderful trainer and they have been together as you said for a while and it has really been a great partnership you know what i suggested there those keys is for that i thought davis at some point is going to try and get inside and actually bully the bigger man we'll see if that happens and i think davis is going to give up these couple of rounds trying to figure out mario's and i'm good for barrios you got to take those routes yeah that's great he may have been choking but david said watching floyd mayweather against logan paul gave him a sense of what's happening in terms of the physical interesting levels of course i thought that was a fascinating comment that he made saying that a minute [Applause] and mario's being really smart again you don't want to commit with davis you know you don't want to just lunge in because david davis is dangerous especially with that uppercut the right hand got through the guard by bodios on the pint-sized powder keg that is gervante tank davis and now barrios trying to put together accommodation was able to land overhand left against barrios and even though davis is a shorter fighter and uh he's got great power of course in his left hand he wants to land that overhand left as well mario's landed a good left hook to the body of davis a few moments ago a minute 15 left in the second neither fighter has ever been down in their respective pro careers there it is left by davis that was what he's been looking for and you know he fainted a couple times and after that i think it's a key for davis to faint more of course you want to faint the taller guy you want to make him make the mistakes almost predict see what he has and and davis was quick with that left marios goes to the body with a right hand left hook right hand through the guard good combination put together by barrios double [Music] davis has been credited with landing just one punch here in the second round by show stats as mario's doing a good job of keeping him at base and that one punch was that nice overhand left listen for the belt gentlemen davis knows how to attract a crowd huge audience here in attendance at state farm arena all right guys round two home game for davis uh adopted by atlanta and here we'll see we talked about uh davis wanting to get the overhand left in and there actually it was a pretty straight left hand i mentioned that akhmadov had landed that punch a lot against barrios and david's able to get it in then later on barrios throwing the hook to the body and then the straight right hand so terrific combination in which it was a creative combination that allowed him to land that right hand yeah it's almost a set up right hand yep against lefty davis's trainer calvin ford has been with him throughout his life has proven to be a light through the darkness that was devonte davis's youth and now a bona fide box office draw just how popular is javonte davis they've sold out the arena tonight 16 570 even bigger than the audience that was here for his victory over yuri orcus gamboa and barnum is finding his way you know up to this third round because davis has not yet pressed on the pedal he still has not pressure barrios you mentioned the the ahmadab fight against bargains but aquadog was a pressure fighter and he was not just being standing in front of him yeah you're right that's true and you know barrios against us made up landed uh knocked him down with the left hook and a right hand the right we've seen land the left hook from barrios we haven't seen him even try that punch yet against davis has found a home for the left to the body and then upstairs he's got to be careful he looked over to the crowd yeah almost looking to get approval from someone that was interesting showing their approval by showing up here tonight to witness davis's move up two weight classes there's a one-two now the hand speed of davis on display i'm sorry guys but that didn't touch anything mario's keeping the distance really well and davis getting pressured by bardios and you see barrios try that left hook he knows that punch at some point might be available to him and he kind of felt the waters out there [Applause] davis says he's getting closer with that left hand and the crowd of course reacting to everything that davis throws into after modest point that doesn't necessarily mean that all these shots are landing but whatever he throws they are going to react in a positive way yeah exactly and you know there's barrios fainting a little bit he could do that as well and it's almost every time that david davis pressures is that he almost has his time his moments he's got to pressure a little bit more final 30 seconds of the third round [Applause] goes to the body with the left hook davis along the ropes i guard we have completed three rounds scheduled for 12 at 140. [Applause] another good round don't bring your head too close okay listen to me right now okay you can't come over the top so don't bring your head in range okay number four coming up make him have to reach for you when he's going backwards that's when you let your hands go okay but keeps people keeping at a distance with these kind of hands forward you not a lot in terms of offenses we begin round four last round both were credited with throwing 23 punches each barrios connected on five dave is credited with three landed punches yeah we have only had a little over a hundred punches thrown in this fight it's been a very tentative and strategic start for barrios he likes that because he can stay on the outside and peck away and very important advice given to him by virgil hunter about about not leaning his head in yes and and also barrios needs to be careful not to be being too predictable because davis is just waiting for that right hand to land his uppercut i think we're going to see davis start to jab a little bit more to try and range fine for that big left hand well he's touching touching mario's jab which is a sign he's trying to take away that jab and that's that's a good thing you want to do that against a taller guy that right hand bounced off the glove of davis davis utilizing his footwork to get away from the ropes resetting in the center of the ring fainting pine at mario's with the jab instead it's barrios that sticks a sharp jab lance taking advantage of the [Music] the physical attributes the physical advantages there it is it was so quick i mean he didn't land it but you see the intentions from from tank davis and you know the other fascinating thing that we're all sitting here on pins and needles we're wondering what happens if he lands a left hand you know that's part of what makes it so fascinating yeah because we still don't know if davis brought up the power all the way to 140 so meanwhile barrios would love to earn a one-way ticket to the exo sphere if he were to record the upset victory here tonight despite his physical advantages he is the underdog and now davis with the jab under a minute left well we said that earlier remember that jab if davis can get it on track can help him land that left hand and it's the pressure that davis is putting now he's not moving backwards he's standing his ground he's pushing back he's fighting his way under 30 seconds left in the fourth double jab through the guard by body goes doesn't follow up with the rights there's the right hand [Applause] there's a big difference from barrios doubles with the jab there's a right hand again that scores through the guard barrios effective with the jab and the right hand here in the final seconds of the fourth frame [Applause] right there i'm gonna come back to you for the water if you don't mind good boys fourth round we have nine over ten don't bring your head in line okay keep playing this glove like you're doing sometimes knock it down and stick the jab okay knock it out the way just slap it out the way okay don't don't pitch that knock it out the way but don't take yourself out of position you're doing good here is in the last round barrios sticking that jab out and getting a right hand in uh from distance against davis nothing that hurt david certainly but it was a punch that landed and there have been few and far between of those in this fight fifth round underway scheduled for 12. cervantes davis debut at 140 pounds where mario badios is a perfect 9-0 with eight knockouts in this division and again bardios gets through the guard with the right hand pine atom with the jab at this juncture it is the onus is kind of on javonte davis now that somehow changed his script a little bit and whether it's him jabbing his way in and then landing power punches or whether it's him landing a big overhand left from outside i don't know but he's going to need to change his script a little bit yeah he's got he's got a change of speed in this fight speaking of davis he's that he's trying to take the jab away from mario's and he's doing it right not letting borrows get the full extent on that jab dave as a belt holder at 130. secondary title 135 so many mouth-watering match-ups to be made and the left hand twice got in for david and it all came from taking the jab away yeah you take the jab away you're the good range stand and let go of the left davis there it is there's a left hand that lands for davis [Applause] [Applause] straight left hand the lead left lands for davis barrios is leaning in just a little bit more in this round he's making himself a little bit more of an appealing target good head movement and footwork by bodios to avoid davis attack davis still putting on the pressure there's a right hook to the body by davis left hand upstairs and barrio stands his ground there [Applause] electric atmosphere here in atlanta [Applause] yes he changed the script and it's the pressure the pressure move forward take the jab away get in short under 20 seconds left here in the fifth mario's beginning to feel the pressure of javonte [Applause] round [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in the last round davis was able to get the left hand in on several occasions first using it as a lead left that was earlier in the round and then later on barrios uh who was firing back against him would rip the left hook downstairs it was kind of blocked by davis didn't get in exactly the way he wanted it at the end of the round davis had excellent moments and you notice a little blood around the right eye of barrios and there's the left-handed just got there in the head following as well round number six barrios cut for the first time since he was cut against jose roman back in july of 2018 over his left eye this cut appears to be over the right eye how is it safe to say this is one of the keys to victories for tanks pressuring barrios off to a good start here in the six though with the jab and again dave is trying to take the jab away and he is [Music] and he has closed the distance between himself and barrios now as you know and that will allow him to potentially put draza him by getting on the inside and doing what he did to jose pedraza a little bit and rip shots on the inside and and and land power punches now this should be disrespectful to jose padras he's come back from that and done very very well for himself but that's what davis did and and of course left hand lands for davis barrios now the man going backwards and we talked about that and you know if if barrio in the second half of the fight was going to go back to his old habits you know which is crawling he's got a box he's got to continue what he did in the first couple of rounds i know he has a more aggressive davis now but hey plan b faint look for openings make davis make the mistakes davis continues to lock down barrios continues to negate the jab by pawing at it hoping to find an opening for that left hand just like that another left hand by davis now there was a counter right by barrios and that's something he wants to do at davis over commits [Music] left hand for davis starting to encroach on mario barrio's personal space beginning to find his distance there's the upper cup on barrios he still thinks there's a home for that punch [Applause] here comes the tank under 20 seconds left here in the sixth round marios continues to [Applause] going back davis's left hand has become a potent weapon in this fight he's landed it not a lot but enough to to make a difference and there was a good straight left he's landing it as a lead punch not even and not always use it and there he uses the jab to set it up so he can land it as a lead or the jab [Music] [Applause] floyd mayweather continues to add his advice to the corner in between rounds goes to davis's corners we begin the second half of this 12-round affair being contested at 140 pounds javonte davis who holds bounce at 130 135 moving on up wanting to test the limits of his power against mario barrios both fighters undefeated and one thing we have not mentioned is that davis has taken barlow's punch as well also yeah good point lands to the body but davis does a good job of avoiding the punches upstairs as we bring in our hall of fame unofficial score steve ford oh uh early on i was asking myself how many rounds is davis going to give away well we found out the answer the answer was four because he didn't win any of those first four rounds easy rounds to score with the exception of the sixth i thought that was close i have barrios clearly ahead at this point at the halfway mark tend to agree with steve farhood uh single digit connection round there needs to be an uptick in the offense but again credit mario barrios for sticking to his game plan davis has used the jab better and it's changing this fight it's allowing him to try and get into a better position to throw power punches another thing that bars is doing well is he's turning he's turning every time he throws a punch or every time david comes in he turns he's not walking straight backwards and it's a good thing for him [Music] [Music] trying to time mario says varus goes to the body with the left hook straight left the lead left lance for davis [Applause] box shotting with the left in the final minute of the seventh first left uppercut we've seen davis try and almost got there [Applause] [Applause] mario's left hook [Applause] you got to change the jab here and there for barrios you can't just throw it straight all the time oh double jab followed by the left hand from davis and again the crowd erupts 15 seconds left in the seventh it's been a good round for juvonte davis and yet punches remain at a premium as we go to round eight right there you got your chance up it's time to go to the body now okay send the jab in first and drop that quarter to the mid section drop it right in the middle in the pit right in between okay then come around with the left okay when he's coming forward you just keep that jab working okay and keep turning him in a circle you're doing good we need these last surrounds okay you got this fight mario you got this fight davis attacking and using the jab very effectively we've talked about that and what does it do it sets up the straight left hand as barrios retreats it was three consecutive jabs and then the left really good way to get inside the best way huh yes round number eight scheduled for 12 between two undefeated warriors and jervante tank davis and mario barrios mauro ronaldo al bernstein abner matas here at ringside state farm arena in atlanta joined by brian custer jim gray and showtime championship boxing crew where in one interview javonte tank davis said he would stop mario barrios in round eight and there it is your bar you do take those shots you take those opportunities when davis is going backwards you know both these men have had some issues in later rounds barrios got tired against achmed um davis has had some stamina issues a little bit even though he knocked out cambodia yeah right but you oh [Applause] shot [Applause] you okay you want to continue come here protect yourself a volcanic eruption here in atlanta and davis continues to generate on mario barrios [Applause] davis hits him well [Applause] wow [Applause] looking to survive the final 45 seconds davidson bludgeoning barrios here in the 8th but barrio's trying to fight back [Applause] [Applause] holding his ground the aztec warrior [Applause] but one question has been answered here in round eight javonte davis has brought his power to 140 pounds [Applause] [Music] this round you got what it takes [Applause] that's a weapon we haven't seen yet in this fight from him and he led with the right hook and sent barrios tumbling 75 and you could tell he set up that punch he was waiting for the right moment yeah there it is he looked like he was gonna jab yes and then he brought it back and and and pulled the trigger with the right hook and that's what i mean by perfectly placed at the time and then went after barrios and would land the straight left that would send him down again so take davis with an eruption here the beginning of round nine and round eight over 16 500 were on their feet as they watched davis knock barrios off his feet for the first two times of his career and guys davis is a great finisher so you got to give it up to barrios he held his home yeah it's a very good point yeah take that is a good finisher the biggest opponent of david this career is going to take a little more yeah davis eats that shot to the body from barrios and davis again now they calculated the dynamic of this fight has changed because that would be a 10-7 round with those two knockdowns so the question is early rounds we know some went to barrios and then the middle rounds david's starting getting there and right on the cube there's steve with his unofficial scorecard so davis wow and davis has never been knocked down and you wonder did davis potentially punch himself out in that ferocious eight well virgil hunter said that i think to pump up barrios but he's hoping it's true nobody looks alert he's alert he knows he's still in this fight [Applause] and again it's those moments that davis pulls back he gives his space he lets mario in and mario bardios allowed the opportunity to regain his faculties reset here in the ninth in the center of the ring after going down twice in round eight yeah the interesting thing is the thing i was talking about when that knockout came is that both men have sometimes had issues in later rounds so we'll see if either of them fades more when they're not when that knockdown happened in the ninth left i can see davis taking this round off after you know [Applause] i think that eighth round took a lot of uh davis he was going for the knockout so i think i think he's taking this round off well in davis [Applause] [Music] number 10 in tonight's main event time right there i got you baby well that was fascinating that whole exchange here is where barrios in the last round and it's that same nice left hook it's that same hook that knocked down the mario's the fade to the body came up upstairs yup that was it and he used that to knock down akhmadev when he fought him you know who else used to love to jab to the body and then go upstairs with a left hook a guy by the name of floyd muddy mayweather and that was a fascinating exchange between he and jevon take tank davis with of course calvin ford trying to do his top of the corner as well so here we are round number 10 mario barrios looking to establish the jab early [Applause] looking for a check hook there right hand to the body by barrios now these are two very important rounds for both davis and barrios left took one to the body one upstairs for barrios that lands and steve forward our unofficial scorer has barrios now one point ahead the evan flow to give and take terrific stop here [Applause] [Applause] is not forced to fight a trench warfare fight will he be able to sustain and get through or will he be hurt again by davis's power another right hook curls behind the guard of barrios and the jab pops davis's head back and it's going to be the pressure from davis that's going to have barrios almost fight marios again battering the body of davis with the right hand barriers only 15 for davis in this round so he's been busier davis walks in left to the body starts to back up barrios barrios looking to utilize the dude punishing right hand the body by barrios that was a little low by barriers under a minute left here in the tent to the liver by davis [Applause] bobbing and waving sustained body attack by mario barrios this is going to be a hard route to score guys [Applause] [Applause] and then another oh left that scores from davis [Music] the show now okay keep your punches technical don't get wild okay breathe mario one more i i'm wondering guys is that too much conversation in the corner i understand how much floyd mayweather means to davis but calvin ford's got a job to do as well in that corner and it just seems to be an interesting scenario abner what do you think about floyd mayweather's advice to tank davis in between rounds repeatedly like that well we know he's a legend you know he knows his stuff but you got to give your your coach your head coach you know you got to give him time to talk you got to give him the the authority he is the coach in your in the corner comes back with a three-punch combination through the guard we have reached round number 11. the penultimate round of this prize fight at 140 pounds tank davis daring to be great and his power has already delivered two knockdowns but mario barrios isn't going anywhere and round that last round which steve followed his unofficial score and gave to davis barrios is doing quite close and then davis turned it around with those big power punches in the latter part of the round and we've seen that david has brought him out by the referee you got to take refill gonna go quick i need tape no coaching no coaching that's good that's good momentary respite for barrio says the action resumes davis double jab left hand and barrios has been 12 rounds twice he's won both of them davis went into the 12th round when he knocked out gamboa once and that was in this very arena [Music] [Applause] [Applause] seems like davis is looking for a knockout right hand to the body by barrios [Applause] davis unloads the left jump barrios to double now earth's over it's over davis has ascended to 140 pounds and davis has recorded the knockout victory you can't fight the power of gervante davis what a scintillating display of his ferocity outburst it was a fascinating ending to this fight barrios had shown his power and put and thrown power punches and then davis came back as we look at this young man who could not get it done but for javante davis it was an amazing last round because he faced adversity getting in with those big shots and then went after him yes and i mean i can't say this enough tank davis brought up his power to 140 and was able to substand punches from a solid 140 pounder two he was never faced so one thing i have to say is hard over height tonight for tank davis a tremendous display of respect mario barrios hoping to break through and in many ways he proved his grit and mentally top 10 fighter 140 pounds who had never been defeated who had never been knocked down tonight a guy who holds a title at 130 and 135 moves up to 140 and closes a look at the numbers and a key here is davis always lands at a very high percentage his power shots everything other than the jab and tonight landing at 45 uh that is remarkable and uh we said the body would be important well guess what it was important at the end when he landed that big body shot to hurt his opponent he didn't land a lot of body shots but the one that was important was that one at the end the last round had so much drama packed into it there were a lot of ebbs and slows we'll take a look here at the knockdown well this is that tremendous what of course it's an uppercut what else would it be for for devonte davis and again we see a body punch much like we did with jamel charles knocking down rosario doing big damage yeah it's down the pipe right in the center i mean and after here's where we see the stoppage bar was just not expecting that and because of the body language of mario barrios the referee not wanting to see him take another punch and they did not complain barrios didn't complain about that stoppage nobody in the corner did so they they felt you know he was protecting him from what a situation he perceived could be dangerous for him jervante tank davis sticks the landing in his debut at 140 pounds three knockdowns 24th knockout the 26 year old is now 25-0 and continues to add to his aura let's go to jimmy lennon jr to make it official ladies and gentlemen we have the time of two minutes 13 seconds and round number 11. a referee in charge thomas taylor stops the contest he is the winner by way of technical knockout he is still undefeated now a three-division world champion and the new wba super lightweight champion of the world jervante davis doesn't just want to be great he wants to be one of the greats [Music] [Applause] let's go to jim grave all right morrow thank you very much tank congratulations on becoming a three division champion how would you describe this fight uh it was it was i made it tough i made it tough i say it definitely i could have made it easier but you know um it is what it is i went up and wait two week classes and i got the job done why did you make it tough and what do you mean by that um just you know adjustments you know he won 40. you know i was trying to catch what you know some clean shots i'm the type of fighter that i want to catch you a clean shot i just don't want to throw any type of shot so the shots that i was throwing most of them was missing but eventually i caught up with him did you feel an urgency to get a knockout and you did not want this to go to the judges uh no no because i was coming up with the two-way classes but i knew that you know if i catch them i know for sure i'm cracking so when i caught them it showed you cracked him pretty good in the eighth round maybe we can take a look at that first uh knockdown in the eighth round you were probably behind on the judge's scorecards at that time at least unofficially where tell us what happened here in this eighth round um my coach was telling me to go to a jab side but me i'm southpaw so they know that i'm going to the jab side so i was trying to bait him in and i i faked like i was going left and i threw my right my uh hook up over top and that's why i caught him and then as we move forward here al bernstein and abner morris said particularly after that you were very effective in taking away his jab was that the game plan that definitely was the game plan but not the country i just want to say thank you to you know uh god first i want to thank my team you know i want to thank mayweal promotional heyman i want to thank atlanta i couldn't do this with without y'all you know uh i didn't win this myself we did it together be more atlanta the whole up top that's dory the dome afterwards thank you all right let's take a look here at the end of the fight hey tank tank here's the end of the fight tell us about it uh i knew he was hurt you know i just had to catch him at the right the right time uh floyd came to me and was like he told me like i said he said he was honest he said i was down i knew i was down so he said show me that you're great and you know how we do in the gym dog house baby what does it mean to you now to be a three division champion you joined floyd mayweather oscar de la hoya uh manny pacquiao julio cesar chavez in many greats listen man i can't i can't you know compare myself to them great [ __ ] you know this man this man set the tone you know i'm just i'm just going i'm filing his footsteps so thank you for you know guiding me the right way floyd uh i appreciate you you know leonard had to be out heyman i'm thankful to be in the position uh once again atlanta we did did not disappoint man i heard great things about this place and i look forward to coming back here and fighting again but man never been a hater congrats to tank he came in here you know he did his thing uh i thought i mean it was nothing short of an exciting fight and that's exactly what both of us predicted but i mean he was he's walking away tonight the better man but i'll definitely be back what happened mario in the eighth round a lot of people questioned would he have the power coming up from 130 to 140 and he caught you twice and knocked you down twice in that eighth round yeah i know man like you said he's man tank's explosive uh you know he he caught me slipping and uh i mean you know there's boxing you know at the end of the day at one point you could change the fight that's exactly what i thought happened but man you know congrats to him like i said i've never been a hater atlanta thank you very much final thought you fought a terrific fight did you think the fight
