Please note that this website is currently a work in progress! Lots of interesting data and statistics to come.
There's a missed opportunity to call this, "Runescape: An MMO Divided."

I play osrs because it just works better on mobile.
Eh, pretty accurate video besides the whole "it was content creators that brought back oldschool runescape" bit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqYjIjDAdM8
The video only has 157k views after all this time. If statistics were enabled, I'm sure that by the time OSRS was polled that the video would have maybe 40k-70k views only.
Petitions were launched by various people all the time to bring back old school, the forums were spammed with requests to revert the changes or bring in new servers with changes reverted, and so forth.
The "Bring back oldschool runescape" ball was moving pretty heavily at the time and content creators came along for the ride, sure, but they didn't start that movement. They played a big role, but sole attribution to them is a bit much.
I believe private servers did far more to bring back oldschool runescape than content creators ever did. There were countless private servers at the time emulating 2006/2007 with huge player bases, and Jagex was constantly sending takedown notices and legal action against them.
There were a couple of servers in particular with thousands of active players, hundreds of thousands of unique accounts registered (if you take their numbers at face value), and looked more alive and active than RS3.
People started questioning why Jagex just didnt launch their own server given that private servers clearly showed an absolutely huge (and demonstrable) demand for oldschool content.
Why did J1mmy split the mmo in half?
The last 5 minutes was so insanely true. There are so many questions that are destined to get 90%+, so why bother polling it?
Why did J1mmy split RuneScape in half though? 🤔
They should add like annual events that would put both games together, either by competition or colab, idk, but would be fun (not talking about runefest)
