wasn't me doing the malicious compliance more than request but the middleman who witnessed this gloriousness I worked for a movie theater company in a state that snows every winter we had a contract with a snow shoveling company but my boss refused to use it because the costs of each removal had a possibility of hurting his yearly bonus by a couple percent points like $300 max out of twenty thousand dollars only if it snows more than six inches he would say every time unfortunately this meant that one of the ushers would have to shovel snow on the sidewalk since it's a safety hazard to block the emergency exit doors of a theater it meant you had to shovel a path around the entire building and for each exit door ultimately due to the size it's about a quarter mile around the building no one likes doing it because it's cold and shoveling a simple one shovel length path can take two hours during a snowy Christmas week the busiest week for movie theaters of the year imagine Black Friday shopping for two weeks straight it had snowed just under six inches we were extremely busy and my boss demanded to take one of our much-needed Usher's to go shovel snow I was an assistant manager when we asked if the company could come out instead of us doing it we were told no to which one of my co-workers will call him dan said he would do it and how a later after he had gone outside one by one my boss pulled each other in and wrote him up for refusing to shovel snow when Dan came back in the other Ashes complained to him about it Dan asked our boss why and our boss said that it was because no one wanted to shovel all of the snow and if Dan didn't shovel all of the snow he would get written up as well this all happened at the beginning of my shift around 5:00 p.m. cue the malicious compliance what my boss didn't realize was that it was the last day of the payroll period being Christmas week Dan had already accumulated 40 hours of work earlier in the day my boss left right after telling Dan to make sure all of the snow was removed we worked the rest of the shift and everyone assumed Dan had finished and left it's 3:00 a.m. now and we go to punch out for the week but can't because there is a shift that hasn't been approved yet someone is still working and is at 12 hours of overtime it's Dan I go out to investigate since it should only be myself and my manager as I walk outside I see Dan coming back in smiling the biggest grin on his face and the most dry un snowed paths I've ever seen in my life it looked like two pictures cut together there was not a speck or snow on the entire front path of the theatre Dan spent 10 hours outside making sure that he removed all the snow from the walkway we had a good laugh clocked off and left we didn't hear anything until later that week when I was called into the office and had to write out a statement to why I let Dan work 12 hours of overtime he had this smug look on his face like he had beaten us he was not too pleased when he found out that all of our statements included him saying the phrase remove all the snow and that he refused to call the snowplow company my boss was transferred to another theater soon after the next story is titled sexism isn't the best policy kind of a long one but it's some malicious compliance that led to much needed change in the company thanks for reading years ago I got my first full-time job working as a bank teller it was a job that for the most part one enjoyed especially since it was in a low income area with a lot of immigrants which meant I got to meet lots of really kind and interesting people I wanted to spend more time working here but the management was just not great both our manager and assistant manager were females that in itself is not a bad thing at all I've since then had multiple female managers that I consider to be some of the greatest leaders I've worked with what was an issue however was the massive stick up their butts there were three tellers working there myself and two other women I'm the only male months into working here I started to realize that there was a serious case of favoritism towards my female co-workers they would get extra days off paid mind you longer breaks they got away with mistakes that would get most tellers fired losing money misplacing deposits in another person's accounts etc and in general just stuff I couldn't ever get away with when it came to me I was the pack horse I was not given any slack when it came to making mistakes and I was always expected to pick up tasks that the other tellers weren't willing to do emptying the coin machine reordering supplies opening and closing the branch processing international currency exchanges dealing with the tough clients you get the picture I brought this up to my management and they simply told me they're doing their part why are you complaining about doing your own can't a man handle this cue the malicious compliance in response to this blatant sexism I decided to do what they least expected become the best damn teller they'd ever had I started to maintain all of the branches marketing materials so it looked much more professional I developed our own means of promoting our lending products and became the highest producing loan officer in the company for three months in a row I picked up other tasks that were being neglected in the branch and nobody else knew how to process I even took multiple trainings offered by the company to be able to process more complex products such that account holders from other branches started to come to me at my branch to do business it was an exciting time but hellishly busy my management on the other hand was super happy to take credit for all of my labor communicating to upper management that they had pushed our branch to reach their own lofty goals and had trained us for such that was the straw that broke this camel's back I shopped around and found a part-time position at a marketing firm across town it was intriguing to me and despite being part-time would pay better than what I was currently being paid I forgot to mention I was paid much less than the other two tellers who only started working a couple of months before me I interviewed and got the job I went to my manager and told her that I was quitting that I'd had enough of them taking credit for my work and that their sexism was belittling and was hurting the entire team she couldn't believe what I was saying but dismissed it and simply said well fine then we're done here leave your keys with my assistant before dropping off my keys I dropped an email to our area VP cluing her in on the sexism and dishonest practices in the branch two weeks later I receive a call from this very manager begging me to come back to train the team on the many different tasks they'd left me to learn and take care of I told her sweetly I'm sorry I'm terribly busy with my new job I'm sure teller X and Z can take care of it all for you you've never doubted them before and hung up I heard another week later from a teller I'd worked with in another branch that the area VP had run an investigation into this branch their numbers had plummeted after I left and it was discovered that the manager was not meeting her own lending quotas and the assistant manager had been removing all fees from all the customers accounts and transactions in order to attract them to her to get more business they were both fired and I was free TL DR my managers were sexist and made me do all the work for my female co-workers I obliged by learning vital tasks they were unfamiliar with became their best teller and then left for a much better job they were found out and fired the next story is titled you want to cancel your service current okay you get no internet for next two plus years background I worked for an Internet service provider in Australia called Eyre net we were at the time one of the biggest providers but crucially we did not own our our ADSL one network and we only unsolved the ADSL one service from the biggest provider in the country Telstra we also had a policy that an ongoing issue should have a case owner and I was the case owner for this which is why I got multiple calls about it act one a wild Karen appears I get a call from a Karen while doing an ID check she provides me her age and of course she's in her 40s her internet went down I look at the account and I can see she's got unsold Telstra service one thing catches my eye although there are thousands of exchanges central place your connection goes to shared by multiple suburbs in the country and you can't possibly know them all I know the one she is on because a few weeks earlier a friend was considering buying a house in the area and I looked at this one and found that there are no free ports and thus it is impossible to get a new service connected the waiting list for a new connection was two and a half years at least so I asked her to do the troubleshooting steps and she says she does but I suspect she's just telling me she is doing it to make me go away whatever nothing I can do about that we exhaust all troubleshooting and I tell her there appears to be a line fault I can send out a technician but it will take three to five working days and if there is actually nothing wrong with the line she will be charged one hundred and ninety-nine dollars plus $40 numbers might be wrong it was a while back but it was at least two hundred dollars for every 15 minutes of work to cover technicians time I play her the disclaimer that outlines this and she says yeah I accept on the recording I lodge a fault act to the fault in our loop she calls after two days sounding annoyed things are still offline I tell her it hasn't been five days she hangs up on the fifth day I get the technicians report saying no fault found next day she calls Karen so my connection is still offline it has been five days what's happening me well the technician attended the fault and his report says no fault found Karen what that's bull crap the internet is clearly down and you need to fix it me I don't doubt that the internet is offline but the fault does not appear to lie within our area of responsibility I would suggest you check you local equipment Karen that's not true my son is an IT guy and the router is brand new me okay well I can't speak for the state of your equipment but our equipment appears to be in working order incidentally I just want to make sure to give you heads up that we will be placing an incorrect call-out fee on your next invoice Karen you're lying to me I didn't see no technicians and now you want to charge me over $200 based on your lies I won't let that happen me I assure you the technician attended the reported fault however you did not see them because they probably only went to the exchange which is a proxy for kilometres away from you Karen you're lying to me I am not paying the fee what can I do now meat well if you are adamant that your equipment is not at fault you only option is to file another fault and send the tech out again it is fairly rare but it is not impossible the technician was wrong Karen and then you'll pretend you send the tech and charge me another incorrect call outfi meat we will most definitely send out another tech but yes it is very likely to come back as another nff and in the case of further fee is likely Karen that's bullcrap I have been with you for five plus years and this is how you treat me cancel my service now I will go to your competitors they'll want my money meet ma'am the exchange you're connected to only has Telstra ports and is at 100% utilization if I cancel your service you will lose your spot it is unlikely any of our competitors will be able to provide you any service at all you should just transfer your service to the next provider so called churn this will allow her to keep her sport Karen don't you tell me what to do you lying sack of crap you will cancel my service now our I will do everything in my power to have you fired now I'm pissed off myself now it's a crap situation but there's no need to take it out on me I'm trying to help her and that's her response engage malicious compliance meet okay ma'am hold on for a moment I am canceling you service meet okay cancellation processed let me just remind you that the incorrect call-out fee is still due Karen you won't see a cent of that meat noted but the amount is over collections threshold so we will send you to collections Karen act 3 the joys of the waiting list about a month later I get a request to transfer to me it's Karen I take a moment to catch up on her file and the service is canceled and fee invoiced I run a quick service qualification on her line and I can see that our service so called codes have dropped off and there are no other codes on her line she did not manage to get connected with anyone Karen hello I think I spoke to you last time me yes you did Karen my internet is still down and you are still charging me for the fee I need you to get rid of it me I cannot do that the charge is valid Karen well I can't pay you've ruined my business I was operating an e-commerce business and that won't be possible any time soon running a business over residential connection is a breach of customer service agreement but I let that slide me I am sorry for you predicament but the fee stands Karin I'll do you a deal if you reconnect my service I will pay the fee me I can probably sign you up again even though you're behind on payment but I was not lying to you when I told you that there are no ports on your exchange it is very unlikely you would get a port they are all in use did you try with our competitors as you said you would Karen I did none of them would even try signing me up because they told me they couldn't provide a service meet we are in the same situation Karen why can't you just give me back my old port me because it was given to the first person on the waiting list Karen and how long does the waiting list take me last I checked more than two years Karen this is ridiculous I'm going to Teo telecommunications industry Ombudsman me you may do so as is your right but to be very clear we will substantiate the validity of our fee Karen whatever conclusion she did in fact file a complaint with TIA and I handed her case over to a tio complaint specialist I made sure to point out that she was breaching TOS with business over residential service tio obviously ruled in our favor and we were allowed to send her to actual collections before I left the company about a year and a half later I caught up on her file and she had filed a loss of business claim which was some early closed because residential connections have no service level agreement last contact was her speaking to our credit team asking them to make sure they mark her debt is paid with our collections people and make sure this is reflected on her credit rating there were still no codes on her line it is quite unlikely she got any reasonably priced service connected for at least two years realistically longer as demand only ever went up the next story is titled you won't pay out my pto we'll see about that alright this is pretty tame as far as malicious compliance goes but hopefully you guys take away a nugget of wisdom or at the very least and entertaining short story not too long ago I decided I was done working at my job the project's all started blending together there wasn't much innovation or inspiration people fought so hard to keep the status quo instead of progressing I'm sure you guys know the like also my wedding was coming up and as we were doing the whole thing ourselves from soup to nuts my mind was busy elsewhere at the point typically with us jobs you're not required to but recommended to put in your two weeks notices resignation and if you have any PTO paid time off saved up usually they will pay this out as societal expectations go I let my director know I'm submitting my resignation and this was two weeks prior to my last day she had no problem with it and made the request to Human Resources the next day I get a notice stating that my request to get my PTO paid out has been denied WTF mind you it's not like I had a month worth of PTO or anything crazy like that it was literally three days that I just wanted them to pay out instead they tell me I needed to submit my resignation three weeks in advance for me to receive my PTO not to so I dig out this archaic binder I received on my first day of work and find the section regarding PTO payer lo and behold it states three weeks seriously my director goes out of her way to let HR know that it's approved that she's okay with him paying out the three measly days denied so docket instead I submit a new resignation letter dated the same date as the original and instead changed my last day to the end of the week I also submit a PTO request to take off the last three days of the week approved to make things more official I even put an out of office message for the last three days I'm not in office essentially putting all projects on hold because well I'm out of office enjoying my paid time off it was the most useless asinine hoop jumping I had to do just to get three days paid out which was rightfully owed as it had been earned so the lesson in all of this know your company's policy real well if you're even thinking about quitting don't lose out on anything you've earned being a wage slave the next story is titled he told you he could do it a friend of mine shared this gem with me many years ago when he was a small lad of seven or so his classroom had a Boy Scout instructor coming to give a presentation to the students including how to start a fire with sticks the fun starts when the instructor was having some trouble getting this little fire going and my friend started to giggle this prompted the instructor to call him out and ask if he could do better I sure can sir then why don't you come up here and show us well my friend happened to be from a very outdoorsy hunting fishing family that also did American Revolution re-enacting so he proceeded to pretty much set the table on fire now this was a big note of course and he was taken to the office his father called and the whole tale laid out to set gentlemen who looked at his son they looked at the principal instructor and teacher and said simply he told you he could do it apparently he also then took my friend for ice cream just to make it plain what he thought of the matter the next story is titled want to demand changes and dinner about sure you'll pay of course I am a web programmer among other things and used to be a consultant at that with a very high-end very expensive agency I once had a client who was incredibly anal about the exact wording on their menu specifically at the time pretty much every website had a section on its main menu that said about us and they wanted to be different than wouldn't have that but had to have that section only not with that name so we got a writer and a graphic artist and a programmer together and we sat down and came up with a new label for that section portraits we told the project manager who told the client and we all went about our lives the client got very agitated about it probably because there was one person there who felt he had to have his finger in every part they insisted that they had to decide on a name and the new scope of work their decision would entail what they didn't bother paying attention to was that the contract said very clearly that they had to keep paying the entire team or they'd lose us and the moment they asked for any change of scope or work would stop but they'd keep paying the entire team full-time so that was the project manager at $300 an hour me at $300 an hour the artist at $200 an hour and the writer at $200 an hour so $1,000 an hour total normally we wouldn't all be working full-time on the project every day and would only build a client for actual hours worked but the contract was very clear that once they told the project manager there would be a scope change everyone build for 8 hours a day until they decided and all work had to stop until the client either approved us to resume on the old terms or finish negotiating a new contract or fired us so we stopped and build them 8 hours a day we wanted to keep working because there was other stuff we could do but the project manager who I adore insisted they had signed they could deal with the consequences we had to stop work the client was a fortune 500 company who is mega successful they really could afford it meanwhile the client paid eight thousand dollars per day while they thought about it and they thought about it for four days before they announced that on the morning of the fifth day we'd have a teleconference to discuss it on the teleconference we spent perhaps a minute to describe our deliberation process over words give a list of words we had rejected and state that we were all in agreement that portraits was the word for the job then the client people started arguing with each other over whether this was the right word isn't this other word better no that's boring well how about this one no that's overused we all sat in our conference room and looked at each other like are they out of their minds and waited as they kept arguing literally an hour later I got a word in edgewise and told them that it was no problem to me how long they wanted to argue about it because I got paid either way but this meeting was costing them $1,000 an hour in our time plus I don't even know how much for theirs so perhaps it would be to their benefit to just let us use portraits and get on with it the boss of that company who had been very quiet on the call chuckled and told his people to suck it up and gave us approval to go on to be fair he didn't even walk when he got the bill for $33,000 for one word although I expect he probably had to look at it twice to believe it if you enjoyed the video please subscribe to
