I want to build an impala like this.... not exactly in this way tho.

I want to build, mechanically like this... with the engine and suspension and such... however I don't want it to look pretty. I want to basically be a car that's been sitting and rotting away with dents, scratches, rust and paint falling off with missing trim pieces - like junk, appearance-wise anyway. But underneath (like underbody, interior and such its all freshly repaired and painted.

Old ripped and mushy seats can stay.

I don't think the styling of the Ring Brothers cars will age well.

not a fan of the exterior, but the engine bay and interior are beautiful

I believe that meets the legal definition well another episode of Jay Leno's Garage the Carol featuring today 1969 Camaro hardly stock this is done by the ring brothers you know these guys do incredible work this this one the award at SEMA I think the Chevrolet Design Award I love the fact that it still looks like a 69 Camaro until he's dr. look close and you see all the kind of cool little things they've done so let's bring in Mike and Jim the ring brothers come on in guys how are you nice thanks for having us thanks for being happy yeah yeah well this is just great I mean it's I like the color I mean that that's a chevrolet color is actually it's something similar but yet looks like it could have been in that year yeah I mean I I love the fact that I hate it when a cars changed so much I can't even tell what it was originally you know I love the fact that you've kept the integrity of it but just little I see all what tell me where to start I don't know where to begin ever even the door handles the owner Donnie Atkinson came to us wanted us to build this car and he said you know I really liked the 69 Camaro and he said I want him I want to modify it I run a really bad 69 Camaro but I want it to look like a 69 Camaro and you know I think we I think we pulled that off it's it's still got a lot of the Camaro features and and look but everything has been touched on this car yeah you just have to look twice like I just first off the door handle you know - no way it kind of resembles the original but not real you put the original next to it it wouldn't look anything like it but to see it you have to look at it twice and then you get into the detail of it beautifully done and this here what do we have here well it's the ground effects that we wanted to achieve but you know make the car look a little lower with actually not making the car lower so making carbon ground effects that actually turn are away from the car be a turn up into the car and even the doors are the Don you know the owner he was he's amazing guy and he's got a great eye and even the corners are round you know sorry a lot of the things are are the original Dorf but yet nothing's left alone I like the fact that as normal ground so you can drive and let me out you look car I'm gonna get some of these cars you pull into a gas station it's just not practical you know this is a fun thing about these kind of cars from this era you know such thing is scraping on the ground and it just doesn't happen well the wheels are huge I'm one of those twenties actually it's a it's a 20 in the back and a 19 in the front it's an HRE wheel that we kind of designed it around kind of the old throwback iraq wheel right merrill again we would still wanted it to scream Camaro but yet be different I think they fit the car the gold gold works we went back and forth and the gold you know who'd ever thought we're gonna paint a car blue with gold wheels brown interior and white right but it came together I think I think the car looks good no it looks really good the wheels look big to me but that may be more me I mean if anything distracts from us from a 69 Camaro it's the size of the wheel mm-hmm I mean I just like having a bit more rubber but in terms of Sam all right and you know it's uh I mean somebody I've got a couple of cars with big wheels and just in LA you hit on Patil Bank yeah five thousand dollars down the drain well yeah it drives me crazy but yeah if there's anything that immediately distracts it's probably that it's probably that and you actually designed the wheel yourself right we work together with HRE we okay that's really really rankles a guy that does a lot of our design work for scene that's a great job there's no spare time you gotta say yourself doing carry a nineteen ever thought of it that way beep ah yeah there's a cell phone yeah yeah and we have the array of you camera is that what that is actually that's uh that's a replay camera that's on there to actually tape the police officer that writes you the ticket oh yeah yeah yeah you know it's funny now I'm starting to question everything did you guys do it it was original originally Camaro now this crease is Camaro but it looks different at the front what is different we actually the crease actually follows around the wheel well but we continued it forward and I think when we actually did that we seen that in the rendering the step in the fender here okay maybe that's what's throwing me off we asked Gary the designer about that actually when he did and he said no that's a shadow line but you guys put it in there so I think it worked no it works less we really make the edges sharp on this car yeah so then they were so I think the reflection and the shadow of how sharp they are I think it adds to that I mean that's that's kind of a fun part you know is it Camaro or is it Memorex yeah those commercials you know you can see there but it's just so subtle it looks great and of course the hood is fantastic so it's it's it's a whole ocean carbon fiber and the instep no the hawk the whole hoods carbon but I designed it they actually have these exchangeable inserts so like if you get sick of a cowl hood you can put a flat hood you can put right I just changing the insert we did raise the towel up a little bit to get it a little higher right you can see without you brought the fenders you know the the windshield post around the fender on it Camaro typically runs up to the window oh okay right and this and this does extract heat correct yeah it actually works real well pull the heat out and that will kind of defrost the wind there you exactly in Wisconsin we need that yeah you do need that boy that's really nicely done I really enjoy that that looks great it's people really miss the roof on this car a lot the way the roof is stepped in oh here yeah something that gets overlooked a lot yeah yeah you kind of have the ultimate gurney bubble here yeah yeah and we even made the headliner mimic that on the inside so it actually pops down or that oh I see yeah what it is is that the Center sunk a lot of people think we raised outside but we have sunk the middle okay now is that the stock rear window it is it okay that looks different to me maybe because the way it's more flushed yeah okay you know that's what it is okay I bought it on the front let's see what else we got here it's fun finding all the subtle change it I mean the real genius is no one when to stop yeah I don't know if we figured that out yet no I think we really did because I mean I see so much stuff that's just over done they just taking it one or two steps too far you know and that's what's nice about this I don't get any of that here you know the mirrors on this car what do you do for mirrors there's nothing out there we do we really wanted to do something yeah all the carbon fiber here well the carbon and just the whole way we've machined all of these parts to hold it like in your hand and write a new-style bracket but I think they work well on the car yeah they do they work very well we had got help with Gentex on them there yeah and what's different in the front let's say everything every single thing engine oil cooler down low here on this side okay so we're steering cooler on the other side all the bumpers are a hundred percent machined out of blocks and billet Wow all of these pieces were machined the grilles machined the grille bars and everything all laser cut and put together why re deemed actually what was cool about this Jay is the owner Don he owns a machine shop we could never machine anything that's one chunk bill at that bumper and the rear one and you know that's the real genius of the ring brother yeah yeah get the guy to do all the work he did you a lot of work and and we wanted to make it look like a 69 the RS grills if you didn't have a car here you wouldn't notice they're real flat this one we like the arc of like a regular 69 grill because they have a lot more taper the 69s are real flat because of the hideaway headlights right but the way we did this it's really tapered back meaning the point to the center on a non rally sport cars this pretty flat right but and how does that how's that go are open on their head actually they don't it's got an LED that's what I thought that's that's the head yeah a DoD approved with a with a lens that kind of hide they're very bright too yeah it's I looked and I thought oh they made that the Hitler well maybe not maybe that's just terrifying well and that's why they are opening sir you know on a regular 69 hideaway car the the machined area is much tighter because they do open rather these we needed to narrow it up so that you could project the light through it now tell me about the motor what do we have here so Wagner Motorsports ls3 416 okay cubic inch they start with these an ls3 yeah okay 350 block yep okay and it's not a whipple supercharger on it well that's pretty sanitary huh yeah it sure is it looks like a vacuum cleaner to me yeah now this is a the Whipple that's normally used on the supercharged Corvette correct correct yeah wait just changed the pulley a little more this one turned up plus the whole bottom and everything about it you know Karl they're pretty good friends of ours local engine builders right and they build it from the ground up and it's it doesn't have quite enough power we actually put a smaller pulley on just for you to give it a little more ease and what are we looking at here about 900 machine actually probably with the new pulley it's it's probably a thousand horse Wow it's it feels like a thousand horse you know it's funny cuz when I was a kid the hots the thing was to get the engine dress-up kit mmm-hmm which would be Chrome this and polished that and really the only shiny thing you have yeah and the transmission is what a Tremec Tremec yeah six and it can take 2,000 horsepower pretty tough usually the clutches are what gives up and what are you used for clutch this one's got a center force collection okay just even the latches of machine the latch yeah to to work with all the factory GM stuff as much as the new car stuff we can use we try to use because I know it almost looks as if you know in the old days they'd have a display motor made of wood they would put in there no wires another yeah very cool well I said what is the car Wayne you know you know and that's one thing we hadn't done we were gonna have Dave scale it before we left and we have it I'm sure it's pushing for thousands I'm sure you think yeah I think it's probably 38 to 4,000 it's not a it definitely wasn't intended to be on a diet when it was built with yeah subframe connectors and all that dinah Madden yeah the Dynomax heavy a lot of weight yeah it works but it's it's a lot of weight we could weigh in here there you go good yeah but before we do that let's shut the hood again just from the seven you can just show you is that a Hurst shifter we actually manual damn it right I mean for a while there everybody had these short stubby deals now a second car I've seen then yeah be getting taller you know yeah but that's a really comfortable looking see it really is - they are it's a it's a seat that actually started its life out of the Recaro that oh ok quickly cut up and ya know that looks comfortable I know you guys came with that lawn chair actually that wasn't that mad comfort know what it just looked like a electric chair the steering wheel in here actually Don the owner made that it's we wanted to we actually wanted to make sure it would look like Camaro but that's machined out of another chunk of there's probably two hundred and seventy hours machining just yeah that's doing well and of course you charged on so that oh yeah yeah yeah it's interesting that the wheel looks familiar to me I know it's an original wheel but it has a bit of that Chrysler from the sixties thing you know with the oblong kind of steering wheel well tried to pull the wheel spoke into it you know the way yeah with the big spokes yeah and the modern Camaro will look similar does the side panels look great thanks they're really really nice we work with the guys Steve at upholstery unlimited raps and does yes yeah but he's really he can so straight he's local it's yeah that's the best-looking seed I've seen in a long time and the dash is whose gauges of those actually it's classic instruments again we machined all of the parts and and sent it out and then they actually filled the holes with the gauges but okay yeah Don again did that right no why hurry DMD burnt extra if you look at it like the taillight panel there's grooves in it because we wanted texture nothing just flat we didn't want to think somebody made it out of flat aluminum or something so he actually wired he ETM dand burnt all those grooves in the dash and he was like a machine a piece of carbon and then they burn it in you know the machine carbon to make the grooves that you want and then they put it up to that material and it burns that surface wow that's an interesting way they do that let's go on the back of the car the rear is actually one piece machine this this entire panel yeah was all cut out obviously that was sheet metal from the factory but this is actually a machined piece that carries the taillights tell me about the taillights taillights are 100% one-off they're they're all machine the lenses actually we started out with a red lens material an inch thick and machining the lenses LED boards were made for each one spent a lot of time in the taillights its they're really bright it's hard to be behind this car they sell each other no they're not actually but they're you know they're just a really nice looking light when they're not yeah bumper again was 100% machined out of one big chunk nice tasteful spoiler here yeah I didn't want to it and even the gas door open it oh and it's got the new style filler with no cab it's direct fill Oh kind of nice a bigger tank 16 oh it's actually probably less than that because we had to get the exhaust by it so we're not just each corner we took a couple gallons that's like a Harley peanut yeah oh well well it started at 16 anyway and what's actually registered it's actually registered this time yeah it's the street-legal car well 269 yeah you don't have a lot of problems and you guys won the award at SEMA right yeah Jim gave us best best Chevrolet again at SEMA there's a nice award from them guys that's great that's great very cool we want to see what it weighs sure sure do it and it'll be fun to put up in the end see what looks like I'm sure yeah come on let's take it next door put up near and we'll see how much it weighs go with 38 will this tell you what the weight is this fit this machine and own toys yeah each corner Wow the wage client okay welcome to the ring brother challenge which ring brother is closest to guessing the weight of the car you guess I think it's heavy I think it's 4,100 4,100 and you have it's 4,000 pounds it's 4,000 pounds George can I have the scale I have it on my phone the correct number is 39:53 he cheats he probably waited 7950 three because she put you maybe maybe you were sitting in anything I think it was yeah yeah these looks are great they give you the way for us it's a Chevy that's a 12 just Wombles yeah Shelby what with the three 73 year old it's a little stronger done not actually had purchased that before you even brought it does he want to make sure we didn't throw any Ford dime didn't tell us I mean look at the level of well it's you build the floors around the exhaust I think that's probably a key when you're building something you don't you don't try to incorporate the exhaust after the fact you really start by building exhaust you build around it and we got the the traction bars here actually the four link it's lower or control or control I see okay and the uppers are shorter company called the trade speed it's where you barn here yeah and which brakes are these got the bear Oh bear yeah this has got the race brakes on it they they shut down really well yeah yeah and there's steel rotors right yeah deal rotor the dry sump you know just for some reason for me it just makes me feel comfortable especially if you're hammering on these shows yeah you know they're getting oil with Tremec transmission the six-speed these are great transmissions yeah they really ought to read we do a lot with Tremec and you know you can move the shifter anywhere around three or four choices into it we typically put flex joints in all of our exhaust I tend to call them down a lot you know I'll use these in my Steam car yeah all the fittings how many hours in this car five thousand and that doesn't count God's time that doesn't hopefully Don can ride with you so everybody can see who this done get serious not well he's beep I know he's busy working on your other and this is a street car this is I think are you know I always amazed when I go to SEMA sometimes the guys have chrome rotors oh my go what does that do you can t put the brake on one see you shred it but you know not managed to do yeah what's the yeah and then and this is not a Riddler car you know this is car meant to be everything's not perfect it's it's really just nice but it's not overdone and it's it's these flex joints are great because stuff doesn't move and you know you've how really bolted tight and then cracked I think that's the key of these old cars it's so hard to make them you know you you with all the cars you get in all these new vehicles it's hard to make an old car feel like an order yeah yeah no it is but you know the thing I always say there are guys who do paint and bodywork and trim and then their guys do mechanical and there are a few guys if you guys that can do both to really make it work you know because a lot of times it looks great it needs an engine rebuild it runs like a top it needs paint and chrome in it you know but you guys actually do the whole package and it's really it's really impressive it's really impressive it's probably uh time to take this thing from right I think so good okay it's got 800 foot-pounds of torque yeah up to 60 100 it's the most powerful car you have yes definitely is I think it's a say that's the most powerful Camaro I've ever been in boy it holds very nicely but it's all linear it doesn't it's not peaky and crazy and Lakes rpm yeah yeah so you have a machine shop huh yeah actually we do a machine shop tool and I design and build okay and then of course we do automotive stamping to it all the time so oh is that right yeah forty gallon tank probably won't get you too far [Music] the tumbleweed crosses yeah and be dream of the new Camaro with the 650 horse I haven't yet but I will it's impressive it's impressive got across country it just feeling tired wanting to break loose and every second I don't think you've used a full throttle um you don't know yeah you got to be on a roll into it a little yeah I just want to get some heat in the tires that's my favorite thing on YouTube you know you go to these car and coffee events you get these guys kind of been sitting flags for four hours and they want to pull out of the parking lot make a big show off deal and they hit it they power slide right into the park car guy come over punches into the face he lands a thing with these pilot cars everything happened so quickly right like when I was a kid you knew why you had an accident well I gave me the guys I felt myself something new I over corrected too much and then I had now everybody goes I know what happened and getting the card I'm stepping bang what happened she's got a lot thing that's interesting about it is it just keeps right on follow-up yeah yeah I mean like I said 860 100 you know a thousand horsepower can cure a lot of problems but this thing is it good you should let Don you want to give it a try at your car I can drive it yeah let's say yeah let's it lets at the boss drive it sake is uh it's pretty it pretty unbelievable yeah beam you see let me make everything for it yeah I shouldn't let me drive it right at least they can do is let you drive the same come on son need six gear this day we did all the three Macready machining on it yeah thank you [Music] well how was it to drive your own car very nice very nice yeah I got to do something I couldn't do before that's hilarious that I drove before you did I want to give me at least give me the chance feels okay you said you want to throttle a little too sensitive I found that too yeah I want to get a little more spring in the throttle you know when you start pulling out with it your body goes back and then it goes forward you get a little extra trial activity out of it that way so that needs to change well it's a beautiful car and you you guys do beautiful work and your machine where combined with the ring brothers really makes this an exceptional car do you want Jim to do a burnout with this thing I think it's appropriate he's got more miles on it than I do so I think it's time for Jim to let it bark yeah Plus that way if he breaks it that's right it's still under warranty right thank you how did that burn out right now I believe that meets the legal definition [Music]
