Reviewing Katz’s Deli - NYC’s most Legendary & Iconic Pastrami Sandwich!

hey there i know you you know me of course you do it's epic hearing with eric yay and i am on my last day here in uh new york and i was thinking i want to leave new york with a bang and there are so many restaurants in new york city that i haven't had a chance to try so i kind of had to shortlist and figure out what is the last restaurant that i would leave you with the biggest impression of new york city and i think that restaurant is going to be an epic restaurant called cat delicatessen uh it's a 100 year old restaurant tons of people love it and i think it's just like a new york legendary staple that i just have to showcase so today we're going to visit uh cat's deli down in the lower east side and i'm gonna order uh a couple of their famous like pastrami sandwiches and maybe add a little bit of sides to that i think it's gonna be pretty good it's gonna be pretty awesome excited to try this legendary restaurant never gets old uh so stay tuned with me let's go to the restaurant let's go [Music] guys they allow me to try this give it a try you guys approved yeah well guys welcome back and i finally got seated and i'm inside cat deli and the first thing that i want to say is when you're coming in here it is just packed okay uh it's about 9 00 p.m at night on a sunday night the lines are out the door you have to line up and i like the vibe in here okay lots of energy people are enjoying their food laughter i hear the uh the cutters like chopping away at the meat it's gonna be a good start okay so a couple of things that you guys probably would want to know and i didn't know when i first came into cats because it's been so long since i've last had cats deli when you first come in you're going to be given a ticket and this is the ticket that i was given and what happens is you're going to be uh directed to a specific cutter station um in our situation it was uh cutter station number three and that is actually where you're going to tell the cutter exactly what kind of sandwich that you would like to order in today's case we've got three sandwiches and i'm gonna go through each one of them and he's gonna prepare all the sandwiches cut it up for you and first give you a taste of the meat that you order most of the people when they come here they order the pastrami so you're going to get a sample as you saw earlier they cut that put on a little tiny plate and you definitely have to finish that if you don't finish that it's rude okay so be sure to finish that and everybody usually uh loves the sample from uh the cutter so after your food uh is finished uh you're gonna go ahead and take your ticket along with the j this gigantic tray of food you're gonna go down to the next line and you're gonna order all your sides so in this case i actually have one single side okay and all your drinks is then uh uh ordered at the end so after you get that bring your food back onto this table and now you can actually start to enjoy your meal so uh that is a little bit of a an educational process of how it works here at cats uh let's move on to the food review okay i'm sure everybody wants to know what is the most famous uh sandwich here at cats and it's by far gonna be the uh pastrami sandwich look at this behemoth of a sandwich this sandwich is probably like two and a half pounds okay and i just want to give you a cross section of what this looks like can you see this look at this cross section look at how much meat is on each one of these sandwiches okay this is one but i think i can only fit like half in my belly all right so in my sandwich i got two sauces you can see right here this is the russian sauce and on the other side i got some mustard okay and it's always on rye that is a traditional way of having cat's jelly so without further ado let's go in for the first bite [Music] oh my god they're super tender super soft most of the pastrami that i've had are usually usually very salty or very dry this is neither just take a look at this when i took a bite you could see the cross section of the meat it just breaks off um from what i've read they cure the meat for up to 30 days whereas other places cure the meat artificially and get it done within six days so the question is do you think the meat's gonna taste better in six days or in 30 days you do the math let me know okay first this is uh setting the bar really really high this i think is probably going to be the highlight of the night okay pastrami sandwich cat's deli boom number one the second most popular actually before i hop onto the second most popular sandwich i want to go over some sides because i could balance a little bit of meat with some veggies so the other thing i actually have is some coleslaw now i don't have a fork with me right now i'm going to just use my spoon but take a look at this the coleslaw looks like there's a lot of dressing okay i'm not exactly sure if i'm going to enjoy this coleslaw but from the looks of it i don't know let's find out in my opinion a little too much dressing maybe maybe if you eat this with the sandwich it might be a little bit better but i think with uh just by eating just eating the coleslaw by itself too much dressing in my opinion so what i'm gonna do is take a look at this come take a look coleslaw on my pastrami sandwich here we go but cole salt is a little sweet counterbalanced by the smoky slightly salty pastrami there's like a yin yang yang in my mouth going on right now all right my friends that's another way to eat your pastrami sandwich without the coleslaw is a banger with the coleslaw it's a banger as well okay no proper way to eat it but those are my two suggestions so now i do want to talk about the second most popular uh sandwich here at cats look at this corned beef second most popular sandwich is their corned beef sandwich right here and just like my pastrami sandwich i got it slathered with the russian sauce the russian dressing on one side and mustard on the other side but again these sandwiches are absolutely hulkish they are giant this unit is like this is a pound okay it's going for the first bite can you see like the fat and the lean meat in here i can already tell just from that initial bite which one's my favorite pastrami like i said set the bar really really high this one hard to mash the pastrami not to say this is not good it's still really really good it's a little bit leaner has a little bit interesting taste um jamie not really but something different that maybe i'm not used to [Music] but nevertheless it's still good just not as good as pastrami take a look at this they gave me two kinds of pickles one looks like it's not pickle or maybe it's pickle form last days this one's good this one's good a second one seems like it's pickled for a little bit longer this one is a little bit saltier me i like the one that's a little bit greener so presumably pickle for less time there is actually one lap sandwich that i want to talk about but because there's so much food here i didn't want to order a third sandwich because there's no way i could finish that i already know that so i asked a cutter can i get a half sandwich and they're like no you may not okay maybe they actually say that but they say if you want to get a half sandwich you're going to have to compliment that half sandwich with a side of soup so i said okay and i decided to order a house sandwich and a soup and take a look at this the soup that i got is the matzo ball soup can you see this right here yeah in this matzo ball soup clear broth chopped carrots and this matzah ball right here there's only one other time in my entire life where i've had matzo boss too and it's actually uh with my friend because he's jewish so how does the mata ball soup taste [Music] hey this is good okay guys i think this matzah ball soup tastes better than my friends hopefully you're not watching but if you are sorry this is pretty good and i don't think there's any meat in here i think it's a lot of different flours and eggs would this be considered vegetarian you guys let me know i suspect this is vegetarian and i suspect kosher this matzah ball soup better than i thought there's matzo ball soup came because i needed to i wanted to order a smaller sandwich what is that small sandwich you ask oh let me show you this is the tongue sandwich baby and look at okay look at this tongue oh my god guys take a look at this tongue this might actually be one single tongue does that look right that is crazy huh my gosh the only other time i've had tongue isn't like mexican taco lengua tacos right but in a like a jewish sandwich not so much okay now i think i forgot to order some dressing on the tongue sandwich because it's you can see there's nothing on here just a bunch of tongue so luckily on the table they got this right here the mustache and i'm just going to drizzle it right here look at this oh yeah now i got some action [Music] mustard with my tongue sandwich here we go [Music] maybe it took too big a bite i actually never had a sandwich with so much tongue look how much tongue is in here okay and i took a really really big bite like i said before the only time you usually have is in like mexican uh taco tacos and they chop those you know tongue in small pieces like they dice it up whereas here no i think you actually get the entire tongue like i said i showed you guys how big that piece of tongue was and so for me for for a split second um the the image of just eating a gigantic piece of tongue or multiple tongues at once kind of like had me paused okay uh but nevertheless i think it's still good i think it's just like i was getting a little bit of that in my head okay my mouth was was was fooling with my with my head and uh you know had me paused but my favorite still the pastrami this one is super super um it's lean and it's super soft not gamey at all and in fact the texture is quite nice okay oh guys i forgot to show you one thing when i was uh ordering at the end of the line ordering uh a drink i saw that they had this uh brand called doctors brown soda look at this and what's so unique is i actually have never heard of dr brown's and this says this says since 1869 a brand of soda that has been around for over 100 years i gotta try that cream soda here we go that is good that's like that's like a vanilla soda um it's basically like a vanilla soda like a vanilla ice cream soda think of like a like a root beer float okay think of a root beer float this is exactly what it tastes like it's a little bit sweet but it's like uh really really nice to wash down all the food if you had a chance to come to cats definitely let me know um let me know in the comments below what you order and what you like the most about cats oh and one interesting thing before i wrap up this video is there's a video or movie that came out in the i think it's 1989 and it's actually called uh when harry met sally and there is a table over there um where there's a sign that says this is where the uh the film was shot and we're not we're not sitting there today but that table is literally like maybe 15 feet away from me and i'll show you um that that shot in a little bit and i'll put a little bit of the video clip up here so that you can see what i'm referencing but that is basically where meg ryan you know the hollywood a-list superstar had a moment and uh for those young ones out there uh cover your ears close your eyes i'm gonna put up the video and uh show you exactly what kind of moment she was having but at the end of that clip there was a grandma that was sitting on the side and she said i'm gonna have what she had and hopefully today i ordered exactly what she'd had because some of that feeling is like tingling through my body okay the food is that good um but nevertheless cats get my thumbs up to get my stamp of approval uh if you've been here let
