I am super excited today we're gonna be working on restoring one of the coolest woodworking hand tools ever made that's the stanley seventy one and a half router plane so I've been wanting one of these planes for quite some time now but they're quite expensive define them vintage is very difficult in any case no matter the price and when you do find them they're very expensive I've never seen one in person until I had this one come in the mail I found it on eBay and I've been looking hunting for him on eBay for a while everything's too expensive finally found this one and just worked out to be a great deal it's in good condition and it was advertised with two irons and I'll show you about that in a minute and I think that's part of what made it I guess a cheaper deal is that it was only coming with two irons and the original set came with three when I got it in the mail there was a third ordered included so how amazing is that now I have my full router plane and we'll talk about what it's for right now so there were two designs this is the seventy one and a half so you can see seventy one and a half patented October 29th oh one so that's 1901 for this plane it's got a beautiful natural wood handles it's a 71 and a half it has this closed stroke design from what I've read my understanding the stanley 71 had an open throat design so you could see the iron better so I'm going to show you how it works here we have an adjustment wheel on a threaded rod and then our iron has this notch you can probably see right there this iron slips up through like so and then it sits in on that adjustment wheel as you can see there and then this piece Titans in and closes the iron against the pillar and then this iron is locked in place and what you have here is a flat bottom this iron extends through the bottom of the plane and you can use it you can use it just like that so it's for setting grooves and so you can get that exact depth you want and it's quite an incredible tool it's very specified not many of them around you don't see many but it deserves a good restoration that's not really an usable condition like it is right now but we're gonna take care of that and then I can actually show you what this plane was designed to do so the first step anytime you do restoration like this is to do a complete breakdown of all the components so separate everything everything you can take apart into an individual piece do that don't take a piece off and clean it and take another piece off and clean it you want to break the plane completely down so you can see exactly what you have these beautiful handles there I think rosewood this one's a bit tight instead of coming out of the handle it stayed in the handle so I'll pop that it was just tap that out so these planes were originally the word is japanned they were coated in Japan Japan which is almost like a chrome coat if I can zoom in for you here you'll see places where that still remaining now people really like when the Japan is still on there because it makes this plane original it's not with this one so I'm not gonna worry about preserving the little bits and pieces that are left I'll just clean this like I would with any tool and actually hopefully I get rid of the remaining stuff hopefully it comes off pretty easily because if it's not gonna all be there I don't want any of it there I want it to be nice and clean even for and I love that nice iron look it's definitely not - for me I'm not a big fan of your panning anyways so let's get that iron back off of there okay so let's put those irons assign those will get their treatment later so let's take off this adjustment wheel which is very rusty and stiff this threaded rod you can barely move this this wheel down over up set that aside even separate this little this little thumb screw I'm hoping this will clean up nice I think it will so now we have the solid piece base completely separated so I can clean this up just like it is I'm gonna flatten that bottom and then all of these pieces this should be an easy restoration actually it comes apart fully these Gor just rosewood handles think it's rosewood oh and that was super easy these handles I'm not gonna do really anything with because they're super nice already I don't want to put any rough sanding marks they're just beautiful so I'll clean everything up the wire wheel magic and we'll get to work we got to tune up these irons this is gonna be a awesome I can't wait to have this piece all done add to my collection such a useful tool if you've done much hand to a woodworking you'll know that this is a pretty valuable tool it's tough to replace this and I'll show you why when we get it finished quick introduction this idea here this setup is not my own I actually got the idea sought from Wrangler star this little voice here this little steel voice actually belonged to my grandfather and now I've inherited it and I sort of didn't have a use for it didn't have a place to set it up and what I've done which I got this idea from Wrangler star is I have it mounted on a wood block here so it fits perfectly in my woodworking vise this makes us so nice because I can just throw it in there and take it out as I need it and it's so nice because I don't always want to use my wood job voice here there are lots of times when I'd like to have my nice little steel job vise and it's not so much higher it's up here just under my chest so that makes it nice for intricate work let's say some filing is something filing an axe or something nice to have it up this high I'm gonna be working with my drill this time and I've got super fresh brass wheel here on the drill ready to go and I'm just going to be working on I expect it to be pretty effective I'm using this instead of the bench grinder with the wire wheel like I usually use because there are a lot of small angles and stuff I want to be able to get around and do a proper real deep cleaning on this piece just make sure we got some protection on here especially with those wire wheels you God have these this is those little wires when you get turning at high speeds they start flying out take away your eyesight pretty quick not the best mass I'm working on getting a nice respirator mask here but it's doing the job for right now so let's get to work [Music] [Music] cannot believe how nicely that cleaned up you just near spotless there now no ugly scales of Japan or anything left just sparkly clean and quite a shine on it to really surprised how easy it cleaned up but just gorgeous that bottom obviously I'm not going to touch with with the brush I'm just going to saying that to a nice flat finish but this is just an awesome awesome cleaning got a plane cleaned up fantastically we'll have a look at that in a minute but first we have some sharpening to do I've got my stones in soak here now it's pretty cold in the shop I don't know if you can see my breath there but it's a lot a lot of steam so now we're gonna have a look at these irons well I'm wondering about how to sharpen these irons it's a little bit of a predicament because normally my plane irons I put in a jig and so they're perfectly square but these irons how do you put that in a jig just not happening so I guess I'm going to have to freehand that luckily whoever owned this plane in the past took care of it and knew what they were doing because I mean the odds are in good shape they're actually this half-inch one hair is pretty sharp this one I'm not sure this is a spear point blade I'm not sure if it belongs to the plane set or not I don't think it does because it looks newer but it fits in there and I'm super happy to have it but it is in mint condition just needs a little bit of sharpening so I'm gonna start off here with my lovely Nana wah 400 grit stone so I'm just gonna start off here let's see what happens to this already see how flat it is I'll work the ends of my stone here because it's a little bit flatter and it's a good opportunity to lower the end but I'm starting to get a little bit of a stupid misnomer okay so pretty flat you can see it's a little bit high here on this part of the iron maybe I'm just putting a little more pressure there okay so I flatten the bottom of all three of these irons pretty nicely there's a few little small micro pits in these two irons but got it pretty good now the tough part is how to run this bevel on the stone there's no way to use a guide it's much to the angles far off being able to lay it this way on the stone seems like that could have been something they could have done if they hadn't made it at that angle my only other idea is to hang the stem over the side they sharpen like that it's a little bit awkward but I think I can do it and neither one needs that much filing you see with those four your strokes I've already started so I'm just gonna work it on this stone moving over to my wood stock combo stone so 1000 grit now I don't need to take really need to take the irons above 400 grit they're pretty crispy sharp there now but I want a buttery smooth edge a 400 will cut well gotten pretty well but you won't get that going through the material and it won't sear off the fibers the same so I have the stones here I figure why not and these are good stones they cut fast so I'm not spending a ton of time on it so sharpening is done and we're into honing just starting on my 3000 grit Nanoha and this will start bringing in a Polish now defining that age then we're on to the 6000 up to this and then I'll show you what we have here I'm gonna lower that iron down till it just touches the stone and then we'll see how flat we're keep doing that until I have a perfect surface or a perfectly flattened iron so you can probably see there it's a half-inch iron and my strokes are only but a port of an inch wide I'm just gonna work that until I get the full width I can already see a widening big-time so just to give you an idea here look at the angle of that micro bevel that's how much my iron was out so a little bit out but now it's perfectly reference with the bottom of the plane that works perfectly now this this tool run true and you'll get a perfect perfect cut well here is my stanley seventy one and a half all cleaned up i have the bottom flatten the edge is chamfered ever so slightly i just did that with a file and a little bit of sandpaper just then it's been oiled now it's time for the assembly I'm gonna go ahead and put these hardwood knobs back on see how nice here these screws cleaned up just beautifully a restoration is a lot of fun when it goes this smoothly when all your parts fit together and you don't have to make any new parts and you don't destroy bolt heads trying to get it apart when your handles don't crack frustrations a lot of fun there's a lot of fun anyways but sometimes it gets pretty frustrating when stuff like that happens too much tension on it because they don't take a lot of force this piece goes on next and my adjustment wheel and then finally my irons now let's have a look so here's how the arms turned out you see that micro bevel which is perfectly flattened nice polish these are shaving sharp all these irons spearpoints beautiful six thousand grit polish and the quarter inch turned out just lovely as well all nice and flat so I know my cuts will be true let's just put one of these irons in here and there it is my gorgeous stanley 71 and a half waited a long time for this one and it is perfect I couldn't have imagined it turning out any better than this just look at that lovely finish those handles all the parts cleaned up just almost spotless like they came out of factory almost irons all true and razor edge this is a full complete stanley seventy one and a half now these planes are actually worth a lot of money I could probably put this on now and sell it for probably closer to 300 Canadian in restored sharpen condition ready to use like this probably getting up well up in the twos for sure thanks for watching guys I hope you liked this hit the like button if you want to see this plane in action you're gonna have to wait for the hand tool hangout session that's gonna be using this beautiful plane that's it for this restoration I hope you guys enjoyed it leave me a comment tell me what you think let me know if you've seen this plane or use one before I'd love to hear that subscribe to my channel if you haven't already we'll see you in the next video
