wa this ladies and gentlemen welcome to the mansion that my great great-grandfather bought 100 years ago for $7,000 today our goal is to take this old wall right here in the kitchen we're going to be tearing out and then we're actually going to be building a brand new wall to replace it Justin and Roman just ran into the shed to get some of the wood that we're going to be using while they're doing that I'm going to give just a little tour around the house real quick when we come inside the walk-in door we have ourselves in the entryway we can go down into the basement the basement is this big old gigantic thing we've been working hard cleaning this thing out this is the old Boiler Room we have what I call the interrogation room because it used to be an interrogation room all well okay it had a a metal desk sitting in here with a creepy light that hung down just like can see in the interrogation room it's always dark in here and then we have the room with the big black tank and it it's really dark in there right now but on the other side of our Boiler Room we can go through this door over here and this took us into our laundry room we have a toilet down here and a shower but going upstairs we are going to go back up to the landing and then we pop into the kitchen so we're looking in the kitchen right here this is the wall we're going to be rebuilding today we have another Landing right here we are looking into what used to be the old office this is actually going to be a pantry over here on the right side and we're going to have a bathroom over here on the left on the other side of the soon to be Pantry we have the dining room we are going to be pulling out this wall right here this wall over here is going to be coming out we can look up The Grandmaster staircase we have the old living room here we're going to be pulling out this chimney it's got a bunch of holes up in the bricks up above so smoke actually gets up into the house so unfortunately that's going to be coming out but this living room and the old parlor are going to be connected together into one big living room we can snake all L around the house through a set of pocket doors this is going to be walled off right here where these pocket doors are we have the old front entrance to the house as we can see we can look right down into the Boiler Room wave to the bucket and then we have this beautiful door where we can look right up to the front so going up the main staircase okay we got to take a a second here to admire this view of this room that is absolutely beautiful and it's going to be awesome when we get everything completely rebuilt in here I'm looking forward to it but going up the master staircase right here I don't know if it's called The Master staircase but that's what I'm calling it we have a double Landing system and then we get to the top so at the top of the stairs we have the room to the right the room with cool beveled window this is probably my favorite room in the house we're going to be pulling that whole wall apart just below that we have fireplace down into the living room so that chimney is going to be coming out this wall is going to be coming out this is going to be one big giant room we're going to have a bathroom over here full bath so this is going to be a master bedroom I absolutely love the view through these beveled Windows look at this thing this thing is just cool we got everything spray foam insulated up here so everything's tight we got the full demolition done we've been working hard out in the hallway area all of these walls over here are actually going to be coming out this is going to be a big common area we're going to be building a wall right here straight to me and then this is going to be one giant room on the right side and that is going to connect to what used to be the old bathroom that does not have any floor in it right now and then that's going to connect to my grandpa's old bedroom which this is going to become a closet bathroom room big mix and then you'll be able to take the secret staircase up into the attic our normal staircase up into the is still going to be here as well so we'll take it right now we have some work to do here cuz if you're not careful you will Bonk your head on this and we also have a sheet of plywood sitting up there but we have the secret staircase here we have old staircase coming up into the attic we got everything up here fully ready for construction as well everything has been gutted cleaned up spray foam insulated we used to have the insulation below our feet up here so this was really hot during the summer time and cold during the winter but now I got everything spray foam insulated all the way to the ceiling and this is going to be a livable space but going down we're going to take the new secret staircase I really like this set of stairs this is just cool it's going to be a connection on the room of just like one of the perks of this room coming out here into the common area of the hallway then we can take the servant staircase down this is the wall that we're going to be rebuilding we're looking right into the kitchen right now there used to be a chimney right here so they're going to have a whole bunch of rebuilding to do right there probably going to have to get some longer boards in here at some point cuz they're supposed to go all the way on top of the wall that we're going to be rebuilding then we go down and we are right back to where we started so we got a couple sheets of plywood we need to get laid down and finalized so that way we have a good working area and then we're going to get started on this wall we got a difficult part here Justin and Roman got to go underneath of that old wall they got that bottle jack currently holding up the wall right now that's why they're able to get it that high carefully setting this plywood in place where do I start where do we start Justin okay so we're going to come in here we going to build a temporary wall to support that floor system we're going to take this wall out rebuild where the old chimney was rebuild you mean this hole here yep so we don't have a hole here correct we're going to fill all this in then we're going to start we're going to take some of these plankings out here to cover up that hole in the floor we're going to sheet it and then we we can start building back better build back better build back better all right sweet Justin and Roman got the rest of this OSB down now they have a nice working platform to work on on so what Justin's doing right now he's laying down these 2x4s on the floor because as we can see those big boards that come in at an angle right there they sit on top of this wall so if we're taking this wall out we need something to support all these big boards up there otherwise it will literally fall through so we are actually building a temporary wall right here so we're going to build it up to the ceiling so it'll look just like this and then once it's here it'll hold that ceiling up we'll tear this wall out we'll build the new wall here and then we'll tear the temporary one down did I explain that right sure didn't hear what you said but no my job is agree with you so this little tool that ran has right here is really cool it is a laser so he has that laid down and it's pointing a perfectly straight line along that board you can see the green line on the back wall and so that's what we're going to use as a reference for where we're going to set our 2x4s on top of that straight up and it also puts a line on the ceiling look at that you don't even have to measure anything wa wo wao this doesn't look very oo approved you don't if you don't look at it that's okay heyy moved in yet I hear I hear pain I hear some pain here oh wow looks a lot different hey Cole yeah can I ask you for a favor remember there was a outlet here when we cut it out it just fell down you mind plugging it in yeah I do mind it's dark down there take a laser with you so it can shine oh I've learned Roman's afraid of the dark so he doesn't want to come down here into the basement so right there's his plugin that he wants and I do not see the one we need I'll probably just use this one right here by the way if you're ever pulling on an extension cord and and it comes unhooked just do that with it and then you can pull as much as you want it doesn't come apart I guess if that doesn't work you can always use super glue but uh you might not get it apart what is it Justin 716 okay how many marks is that seven seven 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 did you measure it wrong Justin what was it 716 716 measure it maybe your tape measure not measuring right I'm sure Justin's tape measure not right three that's 3/4 I don't understand what are you measuring two for seven seven I I don't know how to count to seven can you count for me Co one see that one right there thank you little off what you got it I I just was embarrassed that I don't know how to count to seven yeah kindergarten was tough for Roman okay Justin don't mess it up again I'll try not to what's the next one 516 516 so we need this parallel straight edge quarter two big marks four little marks or the first big Mark can we use this metric tape measure we cannot why you don't know metric I don't know metric can teach you then I'd have to forget something Justin's already told us he can't learn anything new unless he forgets something else so we always are constantly questioning him just like to make sure he knows where he is and stuff cuz he's becoming super old so like one of these days we're just worried if he's going to even know where he's at or even know his name he forgets his colors too okay Roman that one hid deep it's not just his fault he's so severely severely severely colored blind that he literally sees in black and white I wouldn't be surprised if I could see a flying Hammer from just normally it takes me about 5 minutes to sharpen my pencil I take this procedure very seriously this is the first step to being precise and accurate so what you're looking for is to create a perfect curl oh right at the end yeah just like that just wanted to make sure that we're cleaning up these boards cuz we want a nice structurally sound wall it's temporary too remember tighten down to exactly 400 ftlb of torque so now we have the temporary wall and then we have the old wall behind the temporary wall is currently supporting all the weight up above so we are going to come in with the saws and we're going to cut out this old wall once we get the wall cut out we're going to finish the flooring down underneath the wall and then once we get that done then we'll rebuild the wall back build back better build back better and just like that we have a little problem that we have to do something about it which is our floor floor joyes splicing up right where we're going to take the wall out meaning we have that side supported but this side is not supported because it's just one separate board to resolve that issue we need another little header board that will support these 1 2 3 4 5 six boards and on this side we'll have a little stud support we thought we have a board laying around here but Justin and I started looking for one couldn't find it and he found found it he found it I guess somebody threw it away and it was in the trailer yeah who threw this who threw such a good board away it wasn't thrown away it was was laying in the pile that's Roman's pile yeah that's my chicken smells like smoked food out here do it oh burnt wood from the miter saw now we got our header temporary header in place we can work on keeping taking this W out which there is not much left here and we'll peel the bottom plate off so we can finish laying our subflooring all the way to the end of the wall I'm taking a little trip to the eye doctor quick for whatever reason this eyeball see it's all swolling all up in the corner and stuff I don't know what's going on with it feel like I got punched in the eye so dad had a doctor appointment today I'm just going to ride up with him to the eye doctor and we're going to see what's going on here hopefully it's just like pink eye or something they give me some eye drops and that'll be the end of it but look at this we're going to let Justin and Roman work on that wall while we're going to the doctor there's a bald eagle pain or just irritation uh just when I blink hard I have a little pain [Music] okay there now just pull it rotate it towards you other side ouch you good yep now we have everything really exposed well we were able to take the that we had here in place before put this one in that's supporting now and know it's looking sketchy but it does the job and it's not going to be here for too long because we're going to put our full sheet of p over here always B to be exact and finish with our flooring as good of an issue or problem Seekers that we are with some another problem that our Joes are not in a straight line and it makes our Rim board go like this bowing like that so we need to trim them down so we have straight line one step ahead to backwards Justin was able to fix our problem of going board right Trim in all these Joes and make them in the same plane so this board would come and flush but now we have one stubborn Joys that we're going to beat see how this one is down low that's because it's this spot where we used to do so we're going to pull on it yep Victory one screw wasn't enough two did it I know you're going to say there is T30 heavier screws currently we don't have any Cole is going to bring some but we couldn't find that single screw that we had so we had to just work with what we have currently so we're getting ready to put Plywood And we just going to pull the three boards so our 4 ft is going to land somewhere over here but then we'll have to cut these boards at 4 ft to make it all work and we'll be one step closer to building our wall here we thought all the demo was done we're ready to cut the floor but anytime you we do something like this we do what we say set the depth of of the blade so in our instance this board is 3/4 of an inch and we do that because we do not want to just keep slicing through the structural Timber or structural Lumber that underneath in our case that's Joes so we have to be real careful and precise with our cuts that way we don't damage anything underneath of the surface that we're cutting so this is our flooring board or subf flooring board and we're just going to carefully adjust our base plate and the depth of our saw so it's barely touching just like [Music] that and also what we try to do is pull any nails or anything that can dull up the blade sometimes you have to go through the nail if you do just do it slowly it will cut but you'll pay in the long term in the longevity of the blade we found more things that we want to do besides our main project and that's continuing this floor Joys sister floor Joys all down to that wall because currently our new wall is going to come all the way throughout here going to land on this so we want to have a support not just one Joy too being side by side and also we found another project which is moving this header beam out of the way because we're done with jacking the whole floor just on that side and also this beam is right in the place where the new wall is going to come to so we need to move it out of there when that bits wore out I'm retiring okay what are you doing eating ice cream again no I ate it all unfortunately all I had was like three spoonfuls well that's just hunky dory look at this we jacked it up that stud wasn't even nailed well we might as well get rid of it e Den nailed by itself by its nature smells like Cedar offset that's close this is our bad blade that we use for demolition so if we H Nails we don't really worry about it too much because it's an old bad blade but for clean lumber for nice Quick Cuts we use the nice blade then we want to set set the depth again so we didn't cut Justin's saw horses [Applause] [Music] underneath can I start mudding these you sure [Music] can I am 26 and 1/2 years old and I have never been to an eye doctor before I did not like that at all I would put that up there to the equivalent of my liking of needles my hands were sweating when I was in there when they're poking around in your eye and they make you go up to a little machine and they blow air into your eyeball holy uncomfortable but come to find out apparently I just have pink eye and it's all swollen because that so they give me eye drops three times a day I guess that was what was wrong so good news is there's nothing in there but uh yeah we got pink eye so I'm going to be old swollen eye for a little while longer [Music] me in [Music] hey Roman you better be happy with these cuz they were 300 where' the stairs go they're right behind you they're they're portable stairs if you need you have to put them in if you don't just holy cow that looks a lot different but you better be happy cuz I about you $350 worth of screws put it in your trailer now [Music] yep well we just got done pulling this old top plate out and look at this mess took us quite an effort to pull it out so between B the damage and the Joes because it just splintered away to leaving all these nails behind we have a mess for us to take care of just just said that this stuff Cuts easy and it's not because he has a nice new sharp blade it's because this wood is has served its time here we are we're thinking that we were excited that we'll start building the wall but no we're not ready for building just yet no I'm not saying it again you missed it sorry Justin was just complaining that by 4:30 I'm ready to get out of here I'm tired of these guys everything I have is junk everything I do is wrong I cannot please these guys so I'm going to start backing my hours off to 3:00 they can deal with it that's all I can handle easy peasy because you have a new blade and I think my other BL would have worked just fine put it on put it in as soft as this is as dry as it is put it in I could have got it with a chisel with two PS put it in so you see where the laser that's where our new stud top plate is going to go so we need to notch it in yeah I think I can start putting the top plate in the top plate is this in your wall and in modern building code it's required to have two of these so it's going to be two top plates flood boards running across and our studs are going to be running up to them well we'll grab boards and start screwing them up this laser level that Roman has is extremely handy it's just this little battery powered thing but since it puts down the laser line all the way to the back wall and up the ceiling we don't have to really measure anything we just lay that where it needs to be and then we just simply line the board edge up right with the edge of the laser and then it is perfectly straight I've never worked with one of these lasers before I'm relatively new to like modern tools construction stuff cuz I've always worked with Justin and Justin's kind of got the mentality of well I've been doing this for 29 years if I've been doing it that long I'm not going to change now so we've always used a string line h i take this back we got the laser level out but Justin was already one step ahead of us cuz he used his little chalk lines we got the laser are sitting on the chalk line all the way down but that helped us to shoot it up line up the laser laser is plum which is which meaning it's the vertical line and now we don't have to do anything here it just shines shines the way for us on the top I do tell you what though they took out the stairs that we would walk to get up here I never realized first of off how big of a crawl space that was secondly it's a lot bigger drop from there to down there than I realized so I I kind of missed the stairs I actually just about stepped off this just a minute go what Justin is doing is actually working on my mess up I just realized so I had that board put in because when we removed our old wall it took the chunk of the wood with it so then there is there would be nothing resting on the joys anymore so I put that board to address that issue and forgot to notch it Justin are we ready to build a wall we are I guess Justin Got a Brand New Impact no name on it yet we just need to get a marker put an old cold the corn star on there hey hey hey Roman Roman you just entered a residential site and you did not have your beepers on while you were driving your fork left that is a violation I have my license what are you talking about yes but you did not have your beepers on I'm writing up in the book sorry pal you're naughty you don't have any empathy Justin did you I just got a ticket hey you should follow the rules pal I don't know what to say there's nothing to say but I'm sorry learned that word I've never heard that word I know you haven't because you don't have any empathy according to your test why am I speed square is laying like trash cuz it's junk uh I don't see the words Martinez written anywhere on here that's probably why because it's Johnson it means it's mine what's your speed square where is my piz stop insinuating that I stole your speed square too I saw him touching it where's my speed n is Empire I bet it's Empire empire see made in the I told you he's evil empire made in the US of a strong 316 make sure you stand right behind it where the sawdust is blowing R like this 11 16 and a quarter quarter water if you're doing that why do you need a line from the speed square well that way the L the saw knows where to fall okay Roman if you really want to know the honest answer I've always cut with a skill saw I've never actually used this saw before so you're just pointing out the obvious and you're making me feel bad this is an uncomfortable work environment and the microaggressions coming from your mouth are high right now so please just tone it down I'm learning okay how come you're learning if you're not fixing your mistakes I didn't know it was a mistake to begin with until you pointed it out and you still ignored what I pointed out no cuz you said it in a condescending way that's aggression right there guys y we use a different board what's wrong what's wrong look at it I do not understand what is wrong with this Bor in good job ran when you were selecting your wood that's on Roman can't trust the guy beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep see that Roman that was proper forklift etiquette When approaching a home in a residential area what is this stud called King stud what makes the king stud huh what makes the king stud it's taller than the are we going to put the here yep what's the doing carrying the header so we're going to have a header there header across here over to there he promis us to walk us through when we set it all up may maybe what please maybe okay what so we have a king stud a a header is there any other terminology that I'm completely unaware of right now King stud a a header um no that'll do it for this wall what do we call a board that's super naughty all splintered up and broken and absolutely useless junk what a Roman come on the process we've been going through Justin measures from the top board down to the floor and it's going to be 116 in in some change so he tells us if it's a 3/16 so 116 and 3/16 116 and a quarter so either say 3/16 a quarter an eighth right on the dot whatever then we come over here to our measuring station with minor saw I measure out 116 and 1/4 in I make my line I cut it I hand adjust in the board back and then he gets everything screwed in TR pretty simple process two man job so that way he can just stay up there measuring and screwing things in well we got one guy cutting so it works out pretty good while useless junk just stands around oh always a good day when you're whipping out the oscillating tool yeah some dummy forgot to lach this out what I'm working on now is the header header header is the board system that's used to carry the load above the any openings in the wall such as doorway or windows for our application this is the header for the doorway we have our cripples jacks on each side it's going to take the load from anything above it either it studs or whatever or it can go all the way up to the top plate and it will transfer anything that goes up above it to these two and down to the floor so it's kind of like a bridge kind of like a bridge that's a good way to put it right here is an excellent example of a header that has already been in the house notice how we have two 2x6s sitting side by side on a vertical plane so all of these boards right here in the middle that come down to it their weight transfers down to the header and then that weight is transferred over to the side just like a bridge down these big double pieces of 2x4 that transfers all the way down to the foundation of the house where if we have like a doorway right here where they had an incorrect header they have a parallel to the ground board and then the only thing holding it up right now is Nails notice how the actual header it's actually sitting on the board so even if we didn't have nails here it would still hold where this one does not but also if you take a close look at that one it's got a smiley face in it for a reason and that Boeing was the reason why we could never close that door in the back parlor in the living room we also have another header you can see the vertical boards coming down that carry the load straight down and then we have the big bridge plank going across and then another board carrying the load down so that's how they were able to get away without having a wall here cuz all of these floor joists are carried right in the middle of that big old header so anytime we take a loadbearing wall that we're going to remove we absolutely have to install a system of headers above it so that way it distributes the load out to the outside and we're basically just forming a big bridge in the middle of the house we ready to take our temporary wall out because our new wall the permanent wall the drum roll is [Music] ready our wall Adventure started down here Justin and Roman got a new in plate board on so this is all fixed we don't have the chimney here anymore so now we have support where we did not before we got our new wall installed so this is 16 in on Center and then we have a double plate up at the top to help support the floor joist and then we have our nice big 2x2 headboard system built in place so we're going to have our entryway here and eventually we'll end up having the ramp out the back but this is going to be the access into the kitchen we had a super stinking solid day today and we are all tired so don't forget to head to the link in the description or cornstar far pick up some cornstar Farms gear it all help support the project otherwise this is all we got for today thanks for watching we'll see you in the next [Music] one
