[Music] thank you [Music] I've waited all my life to be able to do that we need more rock now today I got our farmer hat on our farmer Safari had it anyway we are out in the field we are going to finish our production acre fungicide applications you know when you see the crop duster's flying around spraying their stuff on that's exactly what we're doing except we're driving it we're doing it like the caveman done we got first load completely done I was in that sprayer that's the right spot sprayer since our map is being silly in this sprayer I want to get the Acres the map is being silly on done first so we're gonna hop in this sprayer I just greased it we checked all the fluids we got the semi completely full of water again so we are gonna go run a load off with this and then we'll come back we'll get that sprayer again and then we'll finish the last of the fields Pete Youngblood's supposed to be coming out to work on this egg leader monitor for whatever reason basically my Random Access Memory my ram on it is completely full so just like when you're on your computer and you have 40 tabs open at once how I get slow well for some reason this is full just because it has like five years worth of field data on it so when I'm trying to delete it off of there it says it's still in use so it's not letting me delete it so there's something behind the scenes I don't know why it's doing it but Pete knows how to do it so he is going to come out and get that taken care of but I'm being a little bit impatient and wanting to get this fungicide done because we're talking rain in two days so I want to get this on before the rain so we're just going to deal with it and jump in the other sprayer grandpa's done and done it all this is going to be high management all in the middle and then that little sliver right there is my high management control compared to my inter crop and then we just have regular management control down here Hanson farm and now we're on the last Farm my window is very very very dirty just filled up for our last load it's about eight o'clock we are going to try to beat the darkness it's kind of amazing how even when you get started at five o'clock in the morning you just seemed like your day just goes like that but this is last load I've been looking forward to this day for a while it's about 10 o'clock we just got everything all done 9 46 to be exact and I am absolutely limping this sprayer Home I can actually see better on camera than I can in real life I can see about [Music] 10 feet in front of me and I'm doing four miles an hour I'm tired now we're done for the night I ended up getting one more load off so we got two off Cooper got two off so basically at 250 Acres done we had a funeral earlier today and I was not able to get here to cover it earlier so now we're doing it now cremation this is a cremation past 10 o'clock we got everything covered at the cemetery just fine I was gonna pull the truck in there I did not see the lawnmower I had a short sleep last night [Music] I had a good sleep but it was a short sleep I have a extremely busy day today I've been doing banking stuff since I got up yesterday was the end of the Farms fiscal year so I had a couple things I had to get squared away there I have some checks I'm gonna be bringing to the bank Cooper's got a couple that he gave me he needs to hit put his account while we're here I'm gonna stop on my CPA I need to sign my 941 form and then I have a crop tour meeting all day which I'm not going to be able to take you on because I signed non-disclosure agreements to be able to go to it that's what I'm going to be doing see what we're going to be driving in 20 years yep I'm definitely not taking up like five parking spots and I forgot to put deodorant on so it smells like onions it's me and now for the attorney supposed to sign my 941 yes you have that waiting for me yes we did I've always grew up in a business so I yeah I'm used to money going in money going out not a problem but once I started getting my own employees it is amazing how much money is spent in different areas just to have an employee things you don't even think about so if you're ever frustrated at your boss or something just remember there's more that goes on behind the scenes than you realize morning what are you doing I'm looking for Paul oh yeah dude he's so he's down at the shop so okay you're just forklifts sitting there and just go ahead and run it's right right down the road here yeah your half brother's coming here in a minute so you better give him a hard time I think he had a cavity yeah Custer Farms oh boy I'm not related to that yeah he's just down there so okay I'll be right back [Music] so when he says keys are in it just run it I'm not responsible for accidents [Music] I honestly have no idea where I'm going I think this is the place my macronutrient salesman is going to be at this meeting and I need some product from him so he dropped off the delivery so we're knocking out two stones with one bird oh yeah there we go perfect there she be [Music] oh well the morning must have got must not have got you too bad let's set her down a little there Paul if you want to shift her to get that elephant out of the room right away the house what is the story with the house are we going to resume construction we got everything completely gutted upstairs we got it all messy and then we stopped working on it we made a really nice dent on the porch we got all the composite decking on top we have not got the stairs done yet we have not wrapped the poles we don't have any soffits we don't have any lights hooked up in here and we still don't have siding on that part on top of the porch we don't have anything covering that face plate board we don't have shakes on that little jet out piece we don't have shakes up there and we don't have any soffit up around that window yet then the new addition we want to put on the garage for the vehicles the bathroom on the main floor that is not right next to the kitchen The Underground movie theater I know I know I want to talk about the band side too just uno momento por favor let's talk about the house first so what's been keeping me from actually going into this part of it has been Financial but that's not everything there are a lot of things in here that I can do that don't cost any money the problem is time I have been trying to take our farm to the next level because at the end of the day the farm is what pays my family's bills that is what we do for a living so the better we can make the farm the more we can do in other areas the more we can give to certain things the more we can help other people the more we can do things we want to do the more we can spend time in areas we want to spend because we have the financial freedom and ability to do so that all stems from making the farm better making the farm more profitable making it where we can get through jobs faster so that way we can spend more times in other areas so that way we can make things better that is what I have been really focusing my attention on once I started doing the house I got everything gutted I got everything ready then prices of things just kind of absolutely went insane and then we had the Windstorm that came in and destroyed our big machine shed so that pulled us away from working on the house we spent an entire summer over there working on that and then we built the bin site and now we have issues with the bend sight so my attention has been diverted on a lot of other projects lately but I have good news I was visiting with Justin and it sounds like he is going to be doing more work on his own now so in the past we only got him on the weekends and so now it we're basically going to be able to get him whenever we want whenever he does not have a job that he is working on for somebody else he is going to be able to come here and work on stuff so that means we are going to be able to work on stuff together and I want to work on this with Justin Justin is a good family friend he's helped us on basically every construction project we've ever done since I've been alive but when we work with Justin we learn how to do it and there's just something about being able to say I built my house with my own hands I'm not doing it all Justin knows how to do all the technical stuff but I'm still putting stuff together I'm helping the behind the scenes of getting everything set up and builds into me there's just something special about that it's just it's I don't know the best way to say it I it's like a a worthy noble cause like towards my family all right this house has so much history for my family so many of them have been raised here and it has been an absolute showpiece on the inside for years and stuff is starting to get dilapidated the outside is getting dilapidated and so now I feel like that weight has been set on my shoulders to bring it back to what it was a hundred years ago in an absolute Masterpiece and I feel like that kind of disgraces it if I'm not putting my own Blood Sweat and Tears and actual effort into it so I'm looking at it kind of from that perspective it's not purely just a financial perspective it's just I don't know how to describe it other than that sometimes we can justify things however we want in our head and this is the way I'm justifying so I want to do it it's going to take a little bit longer but it's going to be so much more fulfilling this way or at least to me and like most things I do I plan it out and then it does not go the way I planned it to and a whole bunch more obstacles came up that I ever imagined but that's what's made me the man I am today I suppose before we can do absolutely anything the attic is where we are going to start Justin says that the attic needs to be rebuilt because I don't know to me I feel like if stuff was collapsing you would see it up there but Justin's been doing this for half of his life he knows what he's talking about Neva and I went and visited with a drafter and they are going to come out we have an appointment set for next week they're going to come out and measure stuff up in the attic they're going to put together a computer program of what needs to be supported where what needs to be fixed up in the attic so that way we can end up dropping the insulation in the ceiling in the upstairs because right now the attic is not insulated whatsoever you go up there during the winter time it's colder in Siberia you go up there during the summer time hottest place you've ever been in your life so we want to end up insulating the actual ceiling of the attic so behind the shingles will be insulated then that way we'll be able to have the attic upstairs main floor basement all his actual Living Spaces within the house and so once everything gets rebuilt up there we'll be able to pull all the insulation in the ceiling upstairs we'll be able to pull all the insulation and the exterior wall in the upstairs as well then we'll be able to get everything insulated for the exterior walls upstairs as well as the attic then it will just be as simple as pulling electricity into rooms getting all the heating system figured out in the rooms air conditioning systems figure out in the rooms but we will be out of a demolition Zone and we will be into a construction zone where we are actually building things so that's going to be really exciting once we get the attic rebuilt but it all starts there the goal is to be able to get that all rebuilt get all the old insulation out of there and the new stuff sprayed in before winter time I think it has to be above like 45 degrees in order for the spray foam insulation to properly adhere to the wall so the goal is to get everything done and sprayed before that time period so that way we can actually work during the winter so I think it's going to probably take a couple weeks to be able to get those plants together actually be able to get the stuff ordered and be able to get things built and then get stuff lined up with the insulation guys to come out so during that meantime I would really like to get the shakes around the half moon Windows done get the little softening bits around those because right now some birds that are pretty smart are getting in behind that softening and they're starting to make nests and some of them I don't know how they're sneaking up into the attic every now and again you'll wake up in the morning hearing a bird chirping around in the attic and then you gotta go open a window try to chase it out it's incredible annoying so I would really like to get that fixed if anybody has any ideas on what color shakes we should put up there with the gray siding and the white trim and then we also have the porch that's kind of like a it's a lava rock color is what they call it it's got a little bit of a red Hue to it or I guess similar to the color of the walk-in door on the house if anybody has any ideas on the shade color I would really appreciate it I don't really have an eye for color matching summer does so she's working out too but I would gladly take suggestions on what would look good as well as what style shakes would look good there's a bunch of different options I don't want to get up there and have to paint I really don't I know vinyl does not look as good we could go with the cement board this time kind of between the cement board and a vinyl right now because I do not want to have to get up there and paint that's like 32 feet off the ground or something like that I just don't want to do it I want to put it up and forget about it the what is keeping us from getting the porch done well basically it comes down to me getting canned lighting up inside of this thing the little area that I'm sitting in right now from me to that wall that sticks out we want to have this area into a three seasons room so it will be wrapped in a screen we can come out that door which is right off the kitchen I'm gonna come out here and eat when the weather is fair you're not getting attacked by bugs and stuff but we want to have lights and we also want to have a ceiling fan so we need to get those cans up in there we also want to have cans that wrap around the porch as well so that way it it'll just kind of look cool when it's dark let's say you're out there you turn it on it it'll just give the house a nice accent and I just have not got that done yet we did get the softening figured out what we're gonna put in there I need to get it ordered but we just need to get the lights in first so that way we can get this offering put up around it and then that will be done the problem is we do not have electricity over here yet the house has electricity it's knob and tube the stuff down on the main floor is it goes from the box Grandpa did it in probably the mid-1990s it's just Romex running to a bunch of different outlets and stuff and it's just for like the main priority items like the refrigerator or an outlet in the back room so stuff on the main floor is safe upstairs all knob and tube but we are going to be redoing the electrical system in the house when we end up actually doing everything so I think we're just gonna have to ever get everything wired up have a big bundle of wire sitting up there maybe run it inside the wall so that way it's out of the elements and then it's going to kind of just have to sit and wait until we get electricity to it so I guess that's been a little bit of a non-motivating factor for me because you do all the work and you don't even get to see the lights turn on but it needs to be done as for it the siding not being done right here yet that 2x4 that comes down the way we tied the roof and stuff into the side of the house we use that there is a supporting board so up above it's supported off of that 2x4 that is slapped to the side of the house we need to get the ceiling done so that way we can end up wrapping that post before we can put the siding on Justin explained it a whole lot better than me but that's my understanding he just says once we get the ceiling done we can get that done and once we can get that done then the house watch we kind of look complete and then once we get the shakes done and softening done and these poles wrapped with what they need the stairs on the deck then it will actually be done so we're getting closer we know what we need to do we just we need to get it done and as for the new addition that is not here yet which is going to be the garage The Underground movie theater the bathroom that is not right next to the kitchen because not going to lie having the bathroom right out the kitchen is a little embarrassing when your Carlos O'Kelly's from yesterday decided it was going to hit you when you have people over and hey guys would you mind going to the living room for a little bit that's embarrassing it's good memory but it can make people uncomfortable especially when it's not me and so here's the thing I'm trying to get better at when we start a project we are going to finish that project through before we jump into something else because I have 40 Projects all going on at once right now and that is incredibly overwhelming let's just focus on one thing at a time and not only that you don't get 40 of them done ever because you're just dividing all your attention so spariously between 40 different things they never actually get through we're gonna start with the attic get the attic rebuilt get the attic insulated we'll get the insulation pulled out in the ceiling we'll get the insulation pulled out in the exterior walls we'll get the upstairs insulated upstairs attic insulated that is done that is ready to be worked on during any outside environment the downstairs I don't know if we're going to end up doing that at the same time we do this new addition they're going to be connected together so Parts mirror like I would rather just have one big mess I don't know where we're going to live during that time but we're gonna attack that first and then we'll do that this I don't know if we'll do that first then this or this first then that we'll probably do it at the same time we're making a decision now we're doing it at the same time and for the new part Neva and I already have it completely designed and Ava like found this app on her iPad where we can actually make our own blueprints so we've sat down we have designed the attic we've designed the upstairs we've designed the main floor we've designed the new addition we've designed the Underground movie theater we know exactly what everything is going to look like once we're ready to move those next steps we'll just go to the drafter and we'll give them the stuff then they'll be able to review it and then they'll tell us if it will absolutely work or not it maybe things need to be tweaked a little bit so we have all the kind of planning done it's just a matter of got to get the work done so that's basically the story with what's going on in the house right now we have plans things are moving forward stuff is going to happen we're gonna attack it as hard as we can and when Justin's around we're we're just gonna nail things down we're gonna get stuff knocked out it is Dewey out right now holy cow like four Birds just flew underneath the truck in front of me it is Dewey out right now we are going to get some more tissue samples from the fields put them in the nice bag here and then we'll send them off to the lab so we can see what nutrients are in our plants but since it's a dewy right now I don't want to get all wet out in the fields so we're gonna take the new five loads of rock we're gonna finish spreading that out [Music] ah look at that the new driveway gonna get some rock up in there now then over here along the side of this driveway up to the big machine shed then over here we got all this grass off to the side and then over there where we got all that soil if you would have told me when I started this project that there was going to be more than five dump truck loads of rock over here I would not have believed you but we have 10 in this so far and we still have from there over to the Big Machine Shed to go so I'm guessing that's probably gonna be like another five I'm gonna have to wait for some more rock to come in before I can get this part finished I was trying to get Just a Little Goat Trail mate here so I'm going to come out of the door of the heated shop we can just stay on Rock if we need to come over here to go over to that building to get the scaffolding or anything sometimes we just have to make trips back and forth and in the past it's always been an absolute muddy mess so he's here now we have a little rock path but the idea is we are going to rock all of this as well we were planning on putting grass seed in it at first we kind of had a little bit of a mind change just figured it would probably be a little bit better place to park extra stuff that we're still using but we kind of need it out of the way so that way it's not in the middle of the driveway and from the middle of that building up through here right around the corner of this garage that is going to be an active driveway so really we just have a little spot over there well it's a good sized area but by the time you get two trailers an enclosed trailer and the dump truck over there that spot's going to be full so then this would be the next viable area the name of the game is to keep the driveways clean because we've been running into that problem where we've had congested driveways where stuff gets parked in the middle of them and then we end up having to either Circle through the grass or not be able to go that way and have to back up and we're trying to dummy proof our farm dummy proof by making it where we only have to go forward no matter where we go we have a we can scoop the loop we don't have to back up because when we back up that's when accidents happen I shouldn't say that is when accidents happen it's just that accidents are more likely to happen when we're going in reverse than when we are driving forward and I got really carried away spreading Rock so I've got about three hours of daylight left to get all these fields scouted we're going to be boogieing I should probably grab a long station I just realized I forgot to eat breakfast well I usually don't eat breakfast but I also forgot to eat lunch because I was busy so it looks like I'm just gonna be eating supper we're going on an unintentional 24-hour fast so I guess over these next couple hours while I'm walking out in the fields I'm gonna be doing some intentional praying that this is embarrassing it's not something I've been doing a good job of lately and it's something I need to get back into because at the end of the day our faith and our relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important thing we have like nothing else matters nothing and I have not been pursuing that like I should be so we're gonna make a change we're starting right starting off on Zach's farm this is a cornfield this was planted in our first phase planting remember we have three phases of planting first one it got rained out then second one got rained out and then third one then got rain down we got done so this is in Phase One first planting stuff if you have a shirt with a hoodie on it and a hat and sunglasses I would highly recommend that's what you wear in the corn scouting keep you from getting itchy sunglasses keep you from getting a corn leaf paper cut to the eyeball I did that the other day that was terribly uncomfortable we're gonna do two things out here we are going to evaluate the plants we're going to see how healthy things are and then we're also going to be grabbing some tissue samples we're gonna be grabbing the leaves I like to start down below I want to look at the leaves do we have leaves drooping down do we have brown starting to creep up the stalks what do our brace Reds look like those things that stick out above the ground do we have them braced way off the top like this one here it's kind of high that one's a little higher that one that's what I like to see right at the surface of the ground how thick are the stocks that's a big old girthy thing geez looks like we had maybe some deficiency of some sort when the plant was a little bit smaller it's starting to become evident now then as we work our way up we're just going to start looking at leaves are we seeing any lesions on the leaves that would indicate we have some disease the biggest one we seem to have an issue with around here lately is tar spot so we're just looking for a literally just a black dot on the leaf hopefully we don't find it this field was planted with our white planter and compared to last year looking at the ear Heights much much more consistent and our spacing from plant to plant take a look at that a whole lot better we don't really have any doubles right here we got a skip so either one was there it did not come up or one did not get planted but that is a significant Improvement wow and then we got a little runt right here so that one won't amount to anything we want to minimize those as much as we can just look how much smaller that little ear is on it and it's there's nothing even in there last year we had a runt like that it seemed like like every six plants so one two three four five six hey no runs one two three mmm baby run four five six one two three four five six that's better there's another one that one's a little bit smaller but not as bad as it could be we're definitely not perfect yet I don't know if we'll ever be perfect but we're making strides in the right direction this corn is fully pollinated we got brown silks Brown silks means it's pollinated if we got some little blonde ones coming out so I take it those didn't get pollinated or is it possible that the ear got bigger after it pollinated and then those shot out saying like hey we can actually pollinate more but at that point no pollen was falling from the tassels anymore so those won't ever get pollinated we don't have any more pollen falling like this guy here look at that we got a nice pollination out of him that's a nice size here too I have noticed this more than I would like to see those are Japanese beetles just absolutely diving into where the silks used to be it got clipped off and now they're trying to eat those fresh ones down inside of there those stinking things I'm kind of tempted to maybe change the insecticide we're using because especially in the soy beans I just I have more eating action going on than I would like to see so this is what I did not want to see we got some tar spot starting right here we know that it's tar spot see how it's just like a nice little speckle right there I'm going to try rubbing it off it doesn't come off so we got this back there we got this pack there looks like I got a little bit bigger lesion here we got some down there good news is that's on the bottom part of the plant so that's below the ear these ears or these leaves are going to be the ones that start dropping off first but we really want to protect these upper ears when we find it through the upper ears that are upper leaves that's when it's more of a problem so hopefully it just stays down here right now we did get a fungicide on this but I've been told once you see tar spot it's already been in the plant for like two weeks so at that point fungicide is kind of too late it's more of a preventative measure which this one is not a high Management Field so we just did a laid fungicide on it once we hit Brown silk oh next up we are on the North Farm white did a nice job with the air placement here though look at that all on the same note that's what we like to see we got some double ears going on here hopefully those can mount to something they might have got pollinated a little bit I don't know maybe not why notice stinking water hemp we figured out the mystery with the non-planted field it looks like it is going to be a co-op south side of Mary Lou's as for the beans there's not really a whole lot to look at basically we're looking to see how many bugs are doing munching on here we're right on the edge on the grass there's going to be a lot it is better out there we're seeing how much they're shaded in they should be fully shaded in at this point and then we are just pulling up plants while we're looking at spacing see how far they are spaced apart just like corn and we'll pull plant oh man half of it just fell off but look at that I'm also looking at the top part of the plant we'll find one that's intact here but be very tippity top is no longer putting a flower on anymore so that means it is not going to set any more new ones of these try leaves so it's not going to be getting any taller it is just solely focused on making pods now I walked out actual testing era you can see my flag right there I pull the plant these ones look a whole lot better we don't have nearly as much feeding going on even though we do have all those guys just chilling on that leaf right there but pull this plant up here looks a little bit different than the one I had on the end row it's still starting to set more pods it's not quite developed as the one over there but we're seeing some really nice development going on I also pull them if I can get them out like this look at the roots if I have a shovel you can do it every time but yanking out usually all those little balls that look like little spider eggs those are what's called punctualization I believe that's what is actually fixates nitrogen from the soil for the plant soybeans are a legume so they can fixate throw nitrogen and then I'm looking at a big root that's sticking out on the bottom that one right there that is the Tap Root we want to make sure that's growing straight down if it is it means we have a nice healthy plant now north side of Mary loose these are the beans and carols they're branching nice they're starting to look good I think these are also at their last flower right at the top don't see a flower coming right there we scouted until it's dark it's by 9 30 right now I got Nate and Jamie coming out in the morning we are going to look at the last three remaining Fields I hope they are I don't want to be pessimistic about it but I went and looked at the bush Farm which is the farm that we are trying the speed trial on we're also trying a biological on the seed and it's a high Management Field split with a regular management so there's a lot of testing going on on that I just got done walking that one before it got dark and it got hit with 90 mile an hour winds the other day there are areas that are blown over on the ground that's a small percentage of the field but there are about one out of five plants where the leaf that the ear is on which is the very most important leaf on the plant the spine of it is snapped so they're pointed down so I think I'm going to stop managing that field I'm not going to be pushing it anymore because the most important ear is broken so it's basically not supplying the nutrients to the plant that or to the ear that it fully should which is kind of a bummer because I've put a lot of work into that and a lot of thoughts and preparation but that's how it goes this is the difference between people who are great and the people who are good when stuff like this happens to those who are great they say you know what happened we're going to keep trying and those who are good or are not good I should say just give up that's really the difference bad things happen to the greats and the bads but the grades just keep getting up keep getting up I mean I mean honestly that's all you can do you can pray and you can keep trying which is what I'm gonna do if you can smell it got you around looks like it was laying on something breaking action yep you can grow through it I didn't see no big residue chunks out there no but that looks like that's a brace front piece there so when that would have kicked it would have been dry yep scattered then there's actually more proliferation than they kind of anticipated going down on the road with those guys found a crack or something so here's what I'm talking about we got the ear we got the leaf and see how that vein right in the center that spine of it is just snapped off so I think this Leaf's kind of half shut down which is what we don't want and we just have that kind of all throughout in here that wind really just boogered up a whole bunch and this is the most important Leaf Uncle Orleans got smacked with some wind this is a pretty common occurrence and when we look down the row it's kind of leaning pretty hard a lot of the top half of the plant is snapped off and then there's a lot leaning like this so I think this is probably going to be a field we're going to want to get in here and harvest early or first because this is going to continue to get worse and just more and more falling on the ground which is kind of a bummer if you look real close you can see those spots that kind of look like almost that the sprayer may be ran over some corn when my brother named Cooper was driving it you know those little dark streaks right there that don't show up the best but uh yeah that's what kind of wind damage we saw so really not bad but they're you know there's spots like that that definitely got dinged now the last thing we're gonna do today we're gonna pull everything out of the big machine shed we need to get to the area in front of the combine because the 24 row planter needs to go in here because the 340 is going to the farm progress show in Illinois so we need to get the 24 unhooked from the 340 so that way we can wash the 340s that way it doesn't go to the show dirty but right now we do not have room in this shed we do but the way everything is configured in here it is just kind of randomly placed so we have a lot of wasted space here foreign [Music] Cooper just pulled in I'm calling it an early Friday night we got the rodeo tonight so he's gonna get everything put away for me that is all I have for today thanks so much for watching we'll see in the next one
