what's up Hobby friends my name is Casey and welcome to another miniature rescue this time let's look at some of the cool things you can do with old Derpy stormcast models [Music] this video is sponsored by flexi spot now it's no secret I've pretty much always been in a weird place with stormcast models on one hand I really like them there is a ton of variety in how you can paint them which I really enjoy the other hand the level of dirt that the original models come with is actually astounding if you look at the rest of the Games Workshop lineup like I get what they were going for and at the time it seemed to work pretty well the bulky not space marine armor the not space ring shoulder pads and helmets that give the model a very unique silhouette no matter how they're painted you pretty much know exactly what type of model it is that in and of itself isn't the problem if anything it just hits home how thought out most of gw's models generally are you know what they are without having to think about it too hard the problem has always been that the storm cast have felt kind of like a first draft and not a completed model and this is really noticeable when you see the progression from their origination all the way through to the new Dominion box set where they were redesigned from the ground up into actually really very good models so now that we have pretty decent stormcast minis what are we supposed to do with all these squatty sigmarines out there well I think I have a solution when I came back to painting after a very long break the first models I took on were the original stormcast models even after not having painted a single miniature for almost 20 years I still felt like I wanted to make those models look different from everyone else's so I decided to go down the Grim dark Road and make them kind of as gnarly as I could it didn't exactly work out how I thought it would but I suppose it could be worse for a first foray back into painting after so long when the new line came out I got really hyped and ended up doing a dirty version of the traditional color scheme and I really like how those turned out really quick painting with great results and the Army altogether looks really cool but then again these are the newer models and they kind of just look good on their own already with the older ones I've resorted to using the trusty stonecast look in order to make a quick beamed Army that I can throw all the older models into which makes sense but it's not really enough to make a truly great Army the point is I've wanted to revisit these squat cast models and do something to make them more Grim dark and awesome so let's get into it and see what we can actually do to improve these models before we continue let me tell you about today's excellent sponsor flexi spot now I've been needing new tables in this space for quite some time and when the opportunity to work with flexispot came up I knew that it was time for a serious upgrade I was sent two different tables both with lifting Motors that absolutely changed the game as far as hobby surfaces go first both of these tables were super easy to build right out of the box it took me about an hour to put both of them together and if you've ever built furniture out of the box you'll know how quick that is the tables are super sturdy and the surfaces are perfect for building and painting models on on top of that these tables make getting into a comfortable position really easy whether you are building painting or gaming you can adjust the height to fit your knee perfectly I honestly didn't know what I was missing until I started using these tables on a daily basis being able to get into the exact position to paint properly and not hurt my back has been invaluable and even gaming on a table that can be set to a coffee table height or a standing bar is so much more comfortable than bending over a dining room table on top of that these look really nice in my hobby room something that I know my wife definitely appreciates if you need a change in the way that you Hobby and want something that is high quality and surprisingly affordable then I highly recommend checking out flexi spot all the applicable links will be in the description below and for every table purchased through that link I get a little Kickback that will go a long way in helping out this channel thanks again flexispot for sponsoring this video now let's get back to those squat little cigarettes the first thing we need to do is Define what a grimdark model really is because it kind of depends on who you talk to here are some examples of grimdark models and you can see there's quite a bit of variety in them some of the models are still very bright but they have weathering and blood effects some are more on the Grim side and less dark I like both approaches but for me I lean towards taking Grim dark pretty literally like the mini is in shadow kind of at all times and it's beaten up and weathered the colors are generally muted there are spots of rust on the metallics and there tends to be a good amount of freehand checkerboard and Stripes that give the mini some kind of extra contrast occasionally a good spot color that gives a little extra boost too the Grim and the dark are what we will be shooting for today and we're going to turn a squad of old storm cast models into something pretty special so I grabbed a selection of stormcast models now I definitely have thoughts on Old stormcast versus new storm cast and I've done some videos on that personally I think the new ones are actually really good models well the old liberators have a lot to be desired what that means is we're gonna do something to make them actually good or at least try the new ones on the other hand I think they're pretty good on their own but I think they can be improved especially if we want to do some Grim dark messed up models that actually look even cooler than they do now so we need to cut these up [Music] the first thing I want to do is clean up the used Minis and get them ready for some new bits I'm gonna end up kid bashing these with new parts to make them look a little different the biggest change will be in the heraldry so to speak I want most of the stormcast markings off of these models so I need to get out my Dremel and shave down the shields to get them flat and ready for some freehand work [Music] thank you [Music] I think a lot of the problems with these old stormcast models is that they just have too much going on and not that there's a lot of stuff around there you know they've got a little bit of you know they've got an extra weapon they got some little ornaments hanging off that kind of thing but the the proportions especially when you compare them to the newer ones are just a little weird they're kind of squat and just funky like everything is just a little bit too heroic scale so I think taking a lot of that away and matching it with the better designed and newer ones just makes more sense and of course you know converting models uh tearing them apart putting new things on gives them that unique look so even if we're cutting into these and we're making them a little bit different Wrecking them some might say you know it adds to the overall feel of that Grim dark messed up armor and everything like that so kind of whatever we do to these even if it's not perfect is going to add to the overall look and feel of them when they're done another thing to keep in mind is that these old storm cast models go for really inexpensive on eBay generally that being said you can actually find a lot of dominion stormcast for a really good price too I usually go for a lot less because the Dominion boxes were really mass produced so you can generally find a box for around I don't know 110 dollars I've definitely picked up a few of them and they've come in handy not only do you get pretty good value in that box getting both the cruel boys and the storm cast but basically by find two of them you get two full armies it's almost a thousand points each side per box [Music] now in order to get a lot of parts and pieces I did Source them online I bought a bunch of 3D printing packs with weapons and heads and all sorts of different things so we're gonna head over to 3D printer print that stuff up and see how well it matches [Music] my goal with these parts is to make the models look more old world and gritty the helmets give off an entirely different look and hopefully will help give them the more grim look it's the same idea with the weapons too these just look more dangerous compared to the shiny hammers they usually carry it took a minute and some scaling but eventually found a good size for the weapons a little oversized but they look really cool and I printed all of them out now all we have to do is cut up these Minis and attach the printed Parts here are the minis so far though I'm still a little unsure of the older models but I'm hoping once we get the parts on they're going to come together weirdly though the newer ones don't look too different and that might end up being a problem we'll see though and honestly either way these should look pretty rad by the end [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause] all right so we have some primer on the models and they look pretty solid I'm really liking the weapon swaps and the helmets really bring a different kind of vibe to these models in particular one of the older minis had the original helmet modified and sanded down and I really like the way that that looks now so that's definitely a great option instead of head swapping every model paint will be the ultimate decider though so let's get to that step and see what happens the first color to go down will be relatively dark silver the goal is to weather this down and add some color back into the more monotone color scheme I'm also thinking a little bit of hard contrast will be in order so some black and white and probably yellow speaking of which I'm going to use a kind of drab yellow as a base here just airbrush it onto the shields shoulder pads and in some cases the little leg pads just to bring in that little bit of color once we get to weathering I'm going to try and knock that back as much as I can but having it will give us some nice contrast and something to bring your eyes in towards the models when they're on the table after the yellow goes down it's easy enough to clean up the metallic with a brush so as far as speed goes this seems like it's going to work just fine with doing an entire Army in a pretty short amount of time that's what I'm looking for with projects like this I want maximum results in a small amount of time I'm still going to take the time to do the freehand but anytime we can save on the rest of the models we'll give wiggle room for the fancier stuff later on next up will be everything made of leather I went with a medium brown that should work pretty well for everything on these models the newer ones have a ton of Under Armor showing and this brown will end up getting darkened down quite a bit by the washes now that the base coats are down I want to add a little variety to the yellow some orangey Brown through the airbrush should help out with the Shady and add a little bit of that weathered look even if this gets onto the armor it's just going to help sell that rust that we're going to add later on so unless it really covers up the metals I'm not too worried about the overspray of course I say that and then I still came back in and fixed up the shoulder pads and bottom of the shields but there was still a good amount of that color around the models and it looked pretty good so I just left it in now that all the base coats are truly finished up it's time to add some free hand to the Shields and shoulder pads unfortunately the footage was corrupt for this section with only a single clip of adding some stupid Tamia masking tape down the center line of the first shield for the most part it went quickly with some tiny squares and triangles for the Shields and a little eye to tie everything together as part of some kind of unique unit I'll definitely be making a video about this at some point but for now you can just imagine that I worked on this for many many hours and it all went perfectly according to play alright now my favorite part weathering everything down and making it look super messed up I like to start with some Tamiya panel liner over pretty much everything this just gets a good black line on the armor and starts to darken down the yellow and white parts I use this right out of the bottle and just slather it on as much as I can once it sets up for a few minutes I can come back in with a makeup brush to just remove and streak that wash once that layer goes on I'm going to slap down a thick coat of brown enamels this is really the layer of paint that will do most of the work towards making these look really beaten and weathered however the brown builds up it dries like rust and we can just wipe away any excess to uncover the metallic paint for highlights it's always a super satisfying process and really fun when I'm sitting down to paint I just love stuff like this getting a little bit messy and getting in there on a group of models to really make them look just like you want them to and more specifically this is something that takes almost no skill to do it's about pushing that enamel around and making it look interesting to you there's no right or wrong way to do it and it's never not a good time the last few things to do will be to add some dirty down rust in a few places where the armor has been kind of scuffed up where water might collect and mess with the metal again just playing around and making something fun with little to no skill involved alright so that does it for these models and I have some thoughts let's forego the usual reveal and just get into whether or not this makes the old Squad cast models better or not and if the new ones still hold up with this type of treatment the first feeling I get with these models is that I really like the way that they came out I'm happy with the conversions and head swaps the process was relatively quick to get all of these guys on the table and I think it's definitely viable for doing an entire Army like this what surprises me the most is what surprises me the most is that I actually think the older models look better like this the heads I printed work better and actually bring some presence to the model more surprising I think is that the original head that had all the spikes cut off actually looks way more Grim dark to me the face looks Hollow and creepy and really works for the model I might end up doing that with a ton of them and just going with that but you have to let me know what you like better down in the comments helmets or shaved heads overall though I think these do look more cohesive as a unit the older models have been elevated while the newer ones have actually kind of lost a little something so they're about even in terms of quality at this point not exactly how I thought this would end but either way this was a really great project and I can't wait to do more of these and what fun we could have with some of the larger units from that Old range I'm very excited to see where this could go with some of these all right well thank you again for joining me on another miniature rescue if you enjoyed something about this
