in today's video I'm gonna show you how to replace a lawn sprinkler head in less than five minutes it's really easy to do and I've learned some tricks along the way that make this a much simpler tasks most heads cost less than fifteen dollars but a pro will charge you between 75 and a hundred and fifty dollars to come out and change a head and most sprinklers fail like this you're going to get patches of dead grass near an area that's watered and most people will go out there they'll mess with the head and it'll seem like it's working and that's because when sprinklers fail they don't usually just die they will instantly jam up it won't pop up and what that means is you'll get dead grass so if you've got big patches of dead grass that are near a sprinkler head that used to look good go ahead and just replace the head only need a few things you'll need a replacement sprinkler head along with a cup of water and also a knife now this one's a Hori Hori and it's designed for garden use but you can use a butter knife or any kind of a knife that you don't care too much about because we are going to be putting it in the ground and you won't need a shovel at all you're gonna take that knife and go about two inches away from the sprinkler head what you're doing is you're tracing kind of a doughnut pattern around the head now the key here is to only put the knife in the ground about four inches you don't need to go all the way down because you could actually cut the sprinkler line and if your knife is thick enough you can use it to pry this doughnut out or just use your hands and clear out a little bit of space in the hole you want to just pick up any rocks or any kind of loose debris so you can get clear access to the top next take that cup of water and pour it right around the sprinkler now the simple trick is really great because it will prevent the hole from collapsing when you're taking the sprinkler out with the water soaked in now just wiggle the sprinkler head back and forth sometimes it's easiest to brace your hands in the hole and just push it with your thumb so that you get a little bit of movement now we just need to unscrew the sprinkler head now all you've got to do is put your hands on it and turn it to the left it's threaded on there quite a few times so just keep turning it until the sprinkler head starts to become loose now you can lift it straight out now you want to be careful here but because you poured the water in the hole before the sides of this little tunnel are perfectly smooth not gonna collapse onto that threaded fitting and here's a close-up of what's going on under the ground you've got a pipe that feeds the fitting and then the bottom of the sprinkler threads right on to it now it says right on the sprinkler that you do not use pipe dope or any kind of teflon tape put on new sprinkler head right into the hole and this is such a perfect fit it'll slide right in on its own now we just need to screw our new head into position now when you're turning this you're just looking to make it secure and feel firm you don't screw a sprinkler head in as tight as possible you need to make an adjustment here so there needs to be a little bit of room to turn it to the right or the left so you want to turn it several times and again it should just feel firm not as tight as possible and now you'll want to align the right side of your head and that's easy to do you just want to rotate the head to the left and then all the way to the right and that's what that little triangle means that is where the water is going to be coming out of the head so if you're along a sidewalk or something like this you want to make sure that that aligns with where you want to water the last step is to insert the correct nozzle into the sprinkler now the nozzle is the jet that controls the amount of water that gets sprayed out and my recommendation is to start by matching the nozzle from the old one with a new nozzle from your new set and most sprinklers have a special tool or a key that allows you to pull the head up and you can see that in this head there's currently no nozzle so all I need to do is insert the new nozzle and I press it in by hand but then when you're done there's a special screw that you're gonna tighten down that'll secure it in place you'll notice that that screw can actually go all the way down over the jet now that's how you adjust the flow I have a separate video that explains this in more detail that'll cover fine adjustments if you follow the technique I showed you the sprinkler body will usually come out in one piece but this can also happen sometimes the top of the sprinkler will actually rotate and you'll be left with that shell below now you notice to panic if this happens simply remove the top part and then grab the shell and rotate that with your hands and you'll be able to remove the rest of the body now you've just got to test it out and see how it does you'll also want to replace the grass donut and there gonna be some final adjustments now they're different for each manufacturer so I put a link to all the big ones in the description to tell you how to make those final adjustments to get the water to go exactly where you want being able to replace a sprinkler head is something you'll want to do not just to save the money but so that if you start having issues you can correct them very quickly yourself hopefully you found this video helpful and learn something new if you liked it please give me a thumbs up and
