one of my most frequently asked questions is how are you getting sex and sex velocities of certain cartridge well well the ways that I get certain velocities especially higher velocities than what you might happen to experience is because of my years and years of reloading and having the ability and understanding what it takes to get the velocities to give me the performance with any percent specific cartridge one of the most popular cartridges out here is seven Remington Magnum at one time had kind of led for years the field in popularity that's weighing behind somewhat but is still a reasonably good good cartridge for a lot of folks doing a lot of things shooting a large variety game anywhere well I'm gonna I'm gonna point out here how some of these things are done and how I get there and we're gonna talk about velocity here and notoriously this cartridge has always been under loaded in velocity even since the very very beginning when this cartridge came on the market and rifles became available for it and that cartridge came out in the Remington from the new Remington 700 many years ago in the early early sixties and it had a magazine box and in a magazine box inside length a three three point six ninety now the factories have loaded this cartridge in most assists around about three and a quarter inches long well this is like four hundred thousand shorter than what you can load you can fairly load - so right on when I bought my first seven Remington Magnum 1964 this came very apparent to me that the factories were seeding the Bullock's much too deep and we needed to do something about it so even my very first early rifle I saw that this throat was lengthened to give me the ability to load to a little bit longer loaded round link and I'm going to pretty much Center around 160 green bullets for the 7 Remington Magnum and because there's some good choices there in bullet design that bullet weight that are good bullets as game bullets so my loading aspect is going to be you know directed there were these things in mind I understand you have various people you know have have rifles that have been manufactured by somebody else for the perhaps shorter magazine box and one thing another well that's where you're at for handicap with that situation you're not handicapped with a little bit longer action for instance you know Winchester action or a Remington 700 and there are considerable other number actions that you can load to at least pushing around 300 600 long and you certainly don't need to load anything longer than that I specifically load my my rifle Sanna winchester Model 70 action 364 action with a good stainless barrel on it and I load I load my cartridges for that rifle 23.93 3.59 oh and this gives me the considerable losses and I just had somebody lately here and I've had of many other times people ask me how do you get these velocities well this is how longer throating my chamber to give me the velocities and i've worked with just about every powder conceivable for the seven Remington Magnum and to this day even from the very beginning once once that some seventy eight twenty eight became available the cartridge was brought out and they made seventy eight twenty eight for that for that cartridge but it never become available for us for many many years as hand loaders however because of my connections in my post relationship with less moment that's Bowman shared seventy eight twenty eight with me that the factories had shared with him there back in the 60s and I still have someone that 78 twenty eight years by the way and and I've in the past couple years I've actually tested that against knew right off the shelf seventy eight twenty eight and I found that I found it to be the to be the same relatively the same I'm talking about yeah there's slightly differences between locked a lot but in all practical purposes it is the same so even though I've worked with with considerably in the other fathers for the seven Remington Magnum I always I always come back almost unbearably to the seventy eight twenty eight because there's nothing that works better it works tremendously good not only with a 160 but boss down with 140 up to 175 white bullets and in all my and all my loading I always concentrate on game game design bullets not bullets that that are match accuracy target bullets because not suited to hunt game with and you're going to have very disappointing experiences now depending on the rifle in seven Remington Magnum with 160 green bullets and I I hear almost invariably you see the Norma or Winchester brass yes I've used a lot other brass and I've had good luck with other brass but those are the two but I try to I tried to stick with brand wise to give me the performance I'm talking about performance I'm talking about the accuracy the accuracy and the reliability in how that brass stands up you know to repeated loading both very very good high quality brass and my velocity is depending on the rifle that I'm working with provided that I can load where I need to load and I have a magazine box it's at least three and six hundred everything throws it properly I can all invariably get thirty one hundred plus up to 3200 not every rifle will give you thirty two hundred my rifle happens to give me that type of velocity that's an edge compared to you know a lot of the structured loaded ammunition that's down there below three thousand feet a second with 160s maybe down there around twenty nine hundred feet a second you know I've seen where people mention that they've loaded that cartridge for four years by the 160 partition at about twenty eight hundred fifty feet a second well they just as well have a 280 Remington because I do that with a 280 Remington loaded with standard length magazine box you know so if that's what you're doing you're only just kind of just kidding yourself because the cartridge is capable of much more velocity and of course we need to understand you know doing all this this loading and all this experiment that we always need to have a good good chronograph a good one-inch tenth graduated micrometer and measure our cartridge belts at the very rear of the belt you know up to a half a thousands of expansion to you know determined our maximum loads and the next determining factor is after you've done this and you've you've adhered to these methods you're going to find that you've been able to load this cartridge brass ten twelve maybe more times and that in itself proves you've got a very good working load that you're doing what you should be doing you're following the proper procedures to get to where you want to go and as time goes by I'm going to cover you know a few other cartridges some of the more popular cartridges the more useful cartridges maybe ones that are used more than than others I'm not going to go into some of the more obscure aspects some these cartridges that have been pretty much you know set aside years ago not that they're not good cartridges but I'll have somebody ask well why don't just do a video on this or a no video on that wall the fact the matter is there's probably a cartridge case that I have talked about over time here that's very close to maybe something that you're talking about and capacity wise so it'll give you a pretty good idea of what you can do with this cartridge or that cartridge so I always worked up you know half a grain at a time with my powder charges and I always pick federal 215 primers and Winchester large rifle primers those will do a good job for you in that cartridge there's other primers and if you have other primers and they're doing a good job and you're getting the performance that you want that's what's important and a while back I did I did a video on various primers and so forth everybody needs to listen to that video to understand primers because there's a lot of difference in primers there's a lot of difference in bullets there's a lot of difference in in cartridge cases there's a lot of difference in in powders there's a lot of difference in every aspect of the component makeup of the Lodz whatever we're loading and every rifle is different and your rifle may only do this and somebody else's rifle is going to do something else and that doesn't mean that your rifle isn't a good rifle that isn't the the things aren't fine they may be just fine so you know just pay attention to these details follow the aspects of loading procedures that I've laid out numerous times for top accuracy and I think that you'll have less need for a question what should I do here what should i do there and you know I think that over time that we're going to see you know an increase in this in this pastime of loading we're going to see with my with my advice we're going to see people that aren't just read loaders but over time we should see some some real hand loaders out here that actually understand what they're doing and they're able to do these things and enjoy this much more because it's a it's a very it's a very good hobby to be involved with anything to do with with the shooting sports it's very very good and you might notice that I'm wearing a 2020 Trump cap well folks get yourself a 2022 Trump cap and wear it so everybody sees it so do your part and good luck with your reloading you
