website at Living Word online.com 2007 it was the day after Labor Day and I was vacationing with my family in Lake Tahoe and with my in-laws my wife's parents they had a boat and I had planned a date that night our fourth child had just been born and my wife and I hadn't been on a date in a while so I planned an elaborate date it was going to be a sunset cruise on the boat just the two of us I picked up Olive Garden take out them breadsticks extra gluten and we got out on that boat and began the the water was just glass there wasn't a person on the boat on the water anywhere because it was the day after Labor Day we got out pretty far just cruising along that coastline the Sun setting the wind in her hair and and all of a sudden boom I heard this big noise there was a huge clunk and the the boat came to a stop we had hit something underneath the water and I would rev the engine the engine was still going but they wouldn't engage it wouldn't move we're just sitting there in the water nothing I began to check all the stuff and the gears and whatever I could find something had gone wrong I popped the engine compartment to see what was the matter and water was pouring into there was a crack in the hole and why we were sinking in and I began to look the Sun is going down it's getting dark and there is nobody on the lake this was startling my wife starts calling her father and I was kind of not wanting her to make that call this was his boat of the top five things I think you don't want to have happen in your lifetime one of them is to sink your father-in-law's boat and we're sinking fast and I didn't know what we were gonna do yeah we have to swim to shore maybe and just let it go I saw in the distance a boat I was like Oh God has saved us and so I waved and they waved back that was like no come and they did they came over and they put a rope in there and we tied it off and they towed us back as the boat was sinking we got back in time and they the marine people put it on a hoist and lifted it up out of the water and kept it safe about that time my father-in-law arrived and it was very awkward because you know I had sunk his beautiful boat and and the marine captain was there and he looked underneath it as they got it in the air to see what had happened and he said this in all of my years in seeing boating problems I have never seen someone do this to a boat I had shaved off the entire bottom the prop everything was gone it was just smooth underneath he said what did you hit I don't know it was a rough day I'm gonna know it matters who is on your boat I should not have been on that boat maybe today I want to talk to you about who is on your boat and what I mean is like who are we around the people that were around in our life it matters matters to where we're going and what our destination looks like we're all on a boat somewhere we're journeying somewhere and there are people in this world who are stuck and not going anywhere there are people in this world who are complaining they're negative they're down they criticize they put you down they put others down that negativity can get on us and it can start impacting us there's other people who are going the wrong way you get around that you might find yourself headed in the wrong direction there's people in this world who are doers they're energized they're going somewhere they're hopeful people we want to be around the kind of people that are going to encourage us they're going to roll with us when we need somebody in a row somebody that will stand in faith when we need somebody to stand when we get hit we want somebody that's gonna be there to lift us up can I get it Amen out there we sometimes need somebody that'll punch us in the nose when we need a good punch in the nose does anybody know what I'm talking about I got people my life that'll just pop me when I need to be popped we want to have the right people around us because the the people that are around us matter just ABS ask Sampson if having Delilah in his life was a good idea and sometimes we put a Judas on her boat you know Jesus had a Judas on his boat because he needed to die for the sins of mankind he needed a betrayer but you don't need a betrayer you don't have to die on the cross and who we put on our boat is going to greatly determine whether we get where God is trying to bring us the good news is God has a right destination for you he has a right boat for you he has the right people in mind for you and when he orchestrates your boat you'll go places you've never been before can I get an amen when Jesus spent the night in prayer he did this three times in the Gospels one of the times that he spent the night in prayer he was up all night praying was the night before he chose who would be on his boat Bible says that in the morning he chose the twelve that he called apostles this means that Jesus the Son of God took great care with who would be closest to him he knew that he had to go somewhere big in three and a half years he knew that he'd be turning it over to the right people he knew that God had preordained and selected the people who would need to be on that boat and he spent the entire night making sure that he got it right my dad used to tell me don't just fall into friendship choose friends look and identify to pick the right kind of friends because the friends will matter in your life there was a time when Jesus had healed a demon-possessed man and the then he told his disciples get on the boat we're leaving he began and get on the boat and the demon-possessed man's begged Jesus to let him on the boat can you imagine that I want to go on the boat with you I'll help you guys row I'll make the food whatever it takes he was begging Jesus to let him go on the boat but he's like no you can't get on this boat a predetermined God's pre-selected who would be on the boat with me I came here to help you but you have a different journey God needs you to stay here and minister to the people that you've been harming for so long and the Bible says that he spread news about Jesus throughout the whole region he simply had a different destiny we find time and again in the Bible where Jesus dismissed the people put his disciples on the boat there was a difference he came and ministered but then he was like all right I got to go these if this is my crew I'm gonna get back on the boat with these people I'll see you later you know Jesus was never acted like he was too good for others he didn't treat people like they were a dead weight or they were holding him back he didn't look down on people or think well I'm too good to be around you he never did that even though Jesus really was more holier than thou he never acted more holier than thou you know people aren't deadweight God didn't create deadweight the people around us are amazing they're wonderful people but they may not be going where you're going Jesus it was simply saying this is my crew and this is where I'm going he loved and would eat with anybody he was never too good to be friendly to everybody can somebody say Amen this is not a sermon where we begin to treat people like well I was stuck so I had to cut them off you know that's not love that's looking down on people we're just not like that that's not who we are at Living Word we love people but not everybody is going to be going where God is taking you you might have to get on a boat and depart and say goodbye to some people can somebody say Amen why because God's got us a journey for you and who we who's on our boat matters think about Noah for a second if you were shem hammered you path you needed Noah on your boat can I say Amen the Bible says Noah found grace with God it doesn't say the Shem hammered your path found grace with God it says Noah did but because they were connected to Noah they got the blessing that was on Noah's life they got their lives spared there's a story in Acts chapter 27 where Paul was on a boat he had been arrested and they were hauling him all the way to Rome to stand trial front of Caesar the Roman centurions and the Roman soldiers that had him in prison there they were not god-fearing people but they had Paul on their boat Paul said to the captain you better not leave there's a great storm coming and we're gonna have trouble if we go but they left anyways they didn't listen to Paul now they got into a big storm just like you can imagine and it was crazy and they were afraid that they're gonna lose their lives they dropped anchor they were being drugged they were pouring cargo they weren't eating they were sure they were gonna die you ever been in a storm where it got really bad look at this men oh he says this verse 21 after they had gone a long time without food Paul stood up before them and said men you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss now if you actually look at that entire verse in the Greek and really break it down it actually means this told you so but now I urge you to keep up your courage because not one of you will be lost only the ship will be destroyed last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said do not be afraid Paul you must stand trial before Caesar and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you the boat crashed the boat sank but not one man not even one hair on one person's head was lost why because they had the right person on the boat with them they had Paul on the boat when you find the right kind of people that have that hand to God blessing on them the anointing of God in their life yes God's anointed you but sometimes we come across people who may be a little further along in their faith a little more hopeful a little more upbeat a little more presence working in their lives you get connected to that having that with you or being close to that will matter these men didn't even know God but their lives were spared because the right person was on the boat somebody say Amen think about Potiphar for a second the Bible says that Potiphar was greatly blessed because of Joseph he had the right person in his household and the blessing God all up on him I want to look for people who are blessed who were going somewhere who I can see physically the hand of God on their lives I want to make sure that I'm close to those kinds of people somebody give the Lord a hand clap right now my brother and I traveled together in January we got our tickets together we checked in together and my brother is what they call pre-check tsa that means he's done some background checks or something so that when he goes to the airport he gets a different experience than I do he has a different path there's a different route it'll be a sciences pre-check tsa this way the rest of y'all go this way when I was with him they stamped my ticket pre-check TSA and there I was walking I've never experienced this before but when you do this you don't have to take your belt off you don't take your shoes off if take anything out of your bag I think they'll let you walk through with a machete to be honest there's confetti goes off there's a small parade there's trumpet players dancers their hand in the water as you go through it was entirely different than the other experience the next time we traveled was in February together we didn't buy our tickets together we didn't check in at the same time and I got the other line there he was in the pre check TSA and I was in the long line you got to take off your belt take off your shoes take off your jacket just getting undressed it's awkward it's weird you're taking stuff out of your bag and they're yelling at you the whole time it's a really long line I finally and you know while I'm doing this I'm watching my brother kind of marched through and the confetti goes off and I hear the music and people there was a choir that day and they're all singing and but my brother had so much compassion for me just like any good brother would he looked over at me and laughed cuz that's called pressure stew I cut into the area where you do this and they take your picture and the guy the guy that was working the area he goes oh my and then he goes come here I had to walk over and I've never had this said before he said I'm not he didn't say he was gonna frisk me he didn't say he was gonna Pat me down he said I need to search you and just you know that is a different experience than a frisk and right there in front of everybody I had to put my hands in the air and he said this is gonna be invasive he was not kidding he went places ain't nobody ever gone before at one point I yet I let out a Yelp I say yeah and then I told him he's gonna have to buy me dinner that's too far man ma I looked at fifty feet away was my brother standing there he's got like a cup of something that he's drinking a little snack a muffin that he's already eating and he said it's like he's watching a movie and he is just laughing and laughing and pointing and laughing more how many know that when you get around the right people you might have a different experience when I was with my brother I had a completely different experience than when I wasn't with my brother he had that blessing on his life he had that pre-check TSA we need to find people that we surround ourselves with that have that pre-check TSA that different experience they're seeking god they're moving in the right direction they're hopeful they're anchored in life they'll stand with you they'll row with you when the waves and the winds are against you they'll stand in the storm God's got these right people for you divine connections and relationships to bring into your life to help you on the boat to stand with you and encourage you when you get knocked down they're not going to betray you somebody give the Lord a hand clap and you end up with a different experience and there you are on the boat you get loaded into God's boat and he's like okay I'm taking the Tarshish and you're excited you know Tarshish is not a bad place and there's people on that destination they're headed to Tarshish and he loads up your boat he supplies your boat he wants you to have success but somebody got on your boat that isn't supposed to go to Tarshish they're supposed to go to Nineveh it's Jonah Jonah just got on your boat how many know sometimes Jonah get up on your boat how many know sometimes Jonah got to go it says in chapter 1 and verse 4 that the storm that had come upon them the ship was about to break apart they were in trouble they went to Jonah and found out he was the one to blame he he was the reason were having this storm you see it wasn't because they were going to Tarshish that they had a storm it wasn't because they were bad people that they had a storm it was because somebody was on the boat that wasn't supposed to go to Tarshish and so this is what they did the Bible says since the storm was getting worse all the time they asked him what should we do to you to stop this storm the talking to Jonah and Jonah says this throw me into the sea and it will become call calm again Jonah why don't you just jump in man why do I got to throw you into the sea you know it's a picture for us though Jonah's never gonna jump in there's a responsibility of the crew to recognize Jonah's got to go and God's Anna no no y'all got to throw him off you're gonna have to toss Jonah overboard and you know it's not that Jonah's a bad person in fact if anything Jonah's the hero it's not that Jonah's not called of God it's not that Jonah's dead wait he's not a bad person he's the prophet of God but God has something bigger for Jonah than Tarshish and God needs us all to get on board with the calling and anointing that's on Jonah's life watch this he says this instead the state that says instead the sailor's road even harder to get the ship to land what did they do instead of throwing Jonah off they decided to keep Jonah even though they knew what the right thing to do was a lot of times we want to do that we want to save Jonah we want to help Jonah not realizing that the best thing we can do for Jonah's to put them back in God's hands and look at this but the stormy sea was too violent for them and they couldn't make it that they cried out to the Lord Jonah's God Oh Lord they pleaded don't make us die for this man sinned and don't hold us responsible for his death Oh Lord you've sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea and the storm stopped at once they chucked him overboard it's a tough thing you know a good Christian maybe wants to jump in and help Jonah I can't believe everybody just threw Jonah off the boat I'm gonna save him because I'm a good Christian it's so important that we recognize that we're called to help each other we're called to encourage each other certainly called to pray for each other and lift each other up but we're never called to save Jesus is the only Savior we jump in we're just gonna hurt ourselves and hurt them the best thing for Jonah is to get back into Jesus hands get swallowed up by that fish and get delivered to his destiny God's got a great thing for his plan too and loving Jonah is sometimes recognizing I have to put you back in Jesus hands because Jesus got bigger things for you than to be on this boat come on and give the Lord some praise right there now your spouse is not Jonah he said I could throw you off the boat I went fishing with my brother my dad would go every year and we go to the North Woods of Wisconsin we get in these little two-man three-man boats and we fish for bass we go fishing on the flambeaux in the North Woods of Wisconsin and the first time that I went with them I took my son Christian the boys get to come when they're a little bit older and we had our own boat just the two of us the Scott had a boat with his sons and my dad had a boat with one of the grandkids one of my brother's sons and and me and my son were hardly catching any fish but they were catching tons of fish just fish flowing in just tons of we had such a really rough day and I remember thinking myself and my brother like somehow anointed for fish or something is like they're like a fish oil on his head or what's the fish seem to just be jumping in and you know we could get a little bit when we see people getting something that we want we can get a little kind of annoyed with that as though it's not fair they don't deserve that what is he more anointed than me for fishing or something why God why can't I get fish the next year I got in my brother's boat one of the days my son went and fished with his cousin since in a different boat and and I sat there with my brother I said to my brother I wanna I wanna I want you to row half the time I'll row half the time and he said I don't row I just float if you don't want a row that's fine we'll just down the river but I don't row well I wanted to get certain places so I decided to do the rowing all the time that I'm rowing whether I row anchor pull up anchor doesn't matter he's never stops casting he never study so why do you care so much he said because I found out that you catch a muskie a large muskie every ten thousand casts my wheels started spinning right he catches more fish because he casts more he's in the water more often than I am he's got a different bait than I use he's very particular about what spot he's dropping his bait in he's got a technique about how he's pulling how he sets the hook I noticed things I didn't know I thought he was just anointed for fishing but what I found out was there things and skills and wisdom that I didn't have in order to catch the fish that I needed to catch when I began to learn these things and make adjustments I started catching just as many fish as he was catching when we get the right people in our boat it exposes us to new experiences we didn't have before it begins to unveil or reveal some wisdom and some skills some things that we can be doing maybe you're so upset because that salesperson keeps getting the salesperson of the month and you think well I don't deserve that god I'm praying that I'd be salesperson of the month and then you get mad at that person not realizing I might be smarter to go ahead and get in their boat for a little while I want to help you next month sell even more because I need to watch to see what you're doing I'm gonna find out that there's some things that you're doing that I haven't been doing I'm gonna learn a little bit because I'm going to get on the boat with someone who already is where I believe God is taking me come on and give the Lord some praise right now following someone who is where I know God is taking me seeing that blessing on somebody's life James and John were fishing and running the business with their father on the boat when Jesus called them the Bible says Jesus called James and John all right come and follow me and this is what happened it says immediately they left the ship and their father and followed him they'd been on the boat with their dad for a while but now a new boat arrived God was taking them somewhere new it doesn't mean that they had a bad dad dad's not the bad guy here yeah he was an amazing dad and he brought them to that position and positioned them to be called into a new bow but when Jesus called they had to immediately disembark one bow in order to get on a different boat and there are people in this room you've been on the same boat maybe for long enough and maybe there are people here today they've been with one group of friends they've been dragging you down holding you back and you know that God's calling you to leave that old way of life because he's calling you to a new way of life and he's gonna put new people in a new boat for you and he's gonna take you places you've never been before when I was young when I was 18 I had all my buddies my friends there are amazing people I love my friends the people I'd gone to high school with hung out with we bled together amazing group of guys loved them I had my high school sweetheart this was my life that was the boat I was in but all of a sudden one summer God called me out of that boat it was like the voice of Jesus said alright let's go this way now and I had to immediately leave that boat it's an unsettling thing when you leave what's familiar James and John had been with their dad this is their house as to all their needs are met this is their business this is what's familiar and comfortable and yet they immediately left to follow Jesus this guy they barely knew they knew that there was a new boat and a new journey and a new destination they could have said no and missed out on God's destiny for their life what I got out of the boat that I had been in it was super lonely it was super uncomfortable I didn't know where I was going I remember my heart ached for the relationships that I used to have they weren't bad people I still love them I'm still connected to him today but God had a different boat for me and he began to furnish that boat with different people that I would be rowing with people like my wife pastor Kelly Anderson people like pastor Jeff Subic was on the boat people like Erin Nichols was on the by I had too many names that I could list that people who are still with me together we pulled together on the boat it was tough but I can tell you what it's been a better ride God had a different destination for me in my life and he needed to get me around some different people in order to help me get there can I get an amen and although it may feel like heartbreak consider the Israelites who left Egypt it was comfortable it was worse but it was comfortable and when they got out to the wilderness what they say we want to go back to Egypt it's so normal to want to feel that way but when you get on the right boat in your life don't abandon ship it might feel uncomfortable it might be a new atmosphere in a new environment you're gonna see things you never saw before and that might be unsettling but stay on the new boat cuz God's got a different destination for you come on and give the Lord a hand clap when I fly to Uganda there's many stops along the way I'll fly from Phoenix to Denver to somewhere else to so there's like five stops right cliff will get on a plane you just keep popping off planes and the first flight I'm with some people I got a captain of the the plane I got the crew I got people I'm sitting next to that I'm talking to great people but because we're not going to the same place when we arrive in that City I have to get off that plane and get on a different plane because I'm going somewhere different than all these wonderful people it doesn't make them bad people it doesn't mean they're not called by God and treasured people it just simply they're not going where God is taking me it's the same thing with church life we come into a church and we get on a boat and God's called us there and there are people were called for a lifetime there might be also people who are called here for a season then they move off to somewhere else we just had our our head usher for I don't know 15 years who moved away to Michigan and sometimes people might even move just within the city to a different Church just because they're at a different church doesn't mean that they're bad people it doesn't mean that you're bad people we're all on the same Jesus train can I get an amen we can still stay friends with those people it just means that there was a different pit stop a destination we had to disembark and now we're reembarked to keep going or God is taking us can I get an amen don't go back to Egypt Psalms chapter one and verse one says this blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly nor stands in the path of sinners nor sits in the seat of mockers there are the wrong kind of people that can mess with our blessing that's with what God's trying to do is though one of the words this use there is happy happy is the man does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers that's about the people that are in the boat you know we still want to go into the dark places and help pull people up isn't that what Jesus did we want to not just reach forward to people that are already at where we know God is taking us we also want to be the kind of people that are reaching backwards and pulling people up who want to go where we're going maybe as you're on your boat and doing your journey there were people who could have opened doors for you but didn't I don't want to be that person I want to be the person that isn't just reaching forward to the successful and blessed people I want to reach backwards to people who maybe are going where God has brought me so far and I want to be a door opener for those people I want to be somebody who gives opportunities away and helps pull people hire people who are wanting to go where I want to go or where God is taking me that's what Jesus was doing he reached back and what did it take for them to be qualified fishermen in the natural seemed unqualified seem like they should have been overlooked maybe were overlooked in many ways Peter James and John but Jesus reached back because he saw potential he saw that they needed to be where he was and where he was going and he reached back and pulled them up we want to be the same kind of people there are people who are the ungodly they have the counsel of the wicked we don't want to be around mockers and sit in those seats we still reach back and help people we'll eat with anyone we love all people we don't judge people do your thing man we don't think we're more highly than we ought we're not cutting deadweight we don't think of people that way like Jesus we're willing to eat with anybody willing to lay down our lives for everyone and to serve and to love others but the people that we let close to us and on our boat we don't want to listen to those voices because they'll mess us up when they're the ungodly when they're headed in the wrong direction the final boat that I want to talk about is this boat called the boat of grace in John chapter 21 Peter invited his some of his buddies the disciples to go fishing with him now Jesus had died and resurrected and it was time for them to be about the work of Jesus but Peter went back to the boat fishing he know where Jesus was he felt abandoned I think he felt really ashamed because if you recall on the story he had denied Christ three times he probably felt guilty he felt like he probably was fired Jesus probably don't want me no more he'll find somebody better and he went back to his old way of life I call it the grace boat because on the boat that God puts you on it becomes necessary to have grace for everybody on the crew and to have grace for the leader Peter could have been mad at Jesus for leaving for dying on the cross he didn't realize that first the the magnificence of what had happened he thought that Jesus was supposed to be king he didn't know what was going on he got abandoned what happened to my leader why did he do this to me he yelled at me and called me Satan once I'm not sure I want to be around this guy anymore he could have not had grace Jesus could have fired Peter denied me three times in my worst moment you disappeared you're joking and now you go fishing when you're supposed to be doing what I told you to do but everybody had grace for everybody Jesus had grace for Peter the Bible says that Peter was and he saw Jesus on the shore and he jumped off the boat and swam to shore to see his Jesus his fearless leader Jesus got him resituated and back into what they were supposed to be doing Jesus had grace for the team the team had grace for each other and they had grace for their leader I was looking at the Super Bowl champions this year the New England Patriots how many loved the New England Patriots okay okay and then where's the the other group the haters of them oh that's a lot of you huh but regardless of how you feel about him you know I was looking at at the quarterback Tom Brady and he was taken in the draft you would think first-round may be top pick this great quarterback one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever live six Super Bowls which ties the record whether you like him or don't like him you think at least he went in the second round he was the hundred and ninety-ninth pick the year that he went the draft overlooked nobody saw the potential in him the year of the Super Bowl this year he threw 11 interceptions now that's a lot his contender from the Philadelphia Eagles only threw four interceptions the same year but a team that had grace for their leader to throw 11 interceptions everybody on that team every single time they played a game people made mistakes people on that team made mistakes that cost them penalties cost them touchdowns cost them entire games possibly but they had grace for each other the championship team has grace on the boat grace for the leader to throw an interception grace for the crew to not be rowing correctly and sometimes we're so tempted to see somebody on the boat it isn't pulling their weight and we might think get them off the boat but a better reaction is to go ahead and teach them how to row is to go ahead and settle down with them and invest in them and to have grace as long as they're going where you're going their hearts in the right place and they seek the right things people may not have the same experience that you have it's better to go ahead and invest in people and draw them up higher and teach them the things that you know that maybe they don't know and it's easy sometimes to see a leader make a mistake and jump off the boat I'm not going to be on that boat anymore listen it's better to have grace on the boat there are people who abandon Jesus because they thought he made bad decisions because they thought he taught a wrong message they missed it they got off the raw the right boat and got on the wrong boat grace keeps us moving when you find that boat that God has placed you want when God opens up those doors and puts you around people to energize you that lift you up he's furnishing that boat to get to its destination don't jump off early because you don't have grace for people have grace for people because you need grace too you can't expect everybody on that boat to be perfect but we're all going the same direction you believe in Jesus I believe in Jesus let's keep moving in the right direction you get on that boat don't jump off the boat stay on it and God will take your places you've never been come on and give the Lord a hand clap I'm so glad that you're still watching we're gonna continue this on our wake up show it's a daily Bible study Monday have it you can't work your way to heaven you can't earn it you can't somehow be good enough to do it and so I know oftentimes the enemy wants to make you feel like well I'm not a good person or you don't know what I've done but Jesus died for every one of your sins not some but all and I know that we all are still going to mess up so don't even let that worry you all that today is about is curing your eternity with a prayer say the with us and believe it and you're saved daily father I thank you right now for forgiving me of all of my sins I ask you to Jesus come into my life be my Lord and be my Savior in jesus name a man you're in your and god bless you i would just thank you so much for watching we'll see you next time
