[Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey everybody thanks for tuning into Real Talk this is the show where real faith meets real life and joining me as often right now my good friend Sam Collier in the house Brian Welch thank you for having me yes thank you for being here I just you know most people wouldn't invite someone like me yes well I am NOT most people and your God said yes but yeah okay so check this out guys here's what we're talking about today okay thank you guys for tuning in cuz we are gonna be talking about TV TV the rules have changed right media has changed yes and you know televisions changed in a way that it's funny because I was talking to somebody the other day and they were saying like well you know we we quit cable and we're not really we don't do a lot of TV and then we got down to it what it really meant was they binge watch Netflix on their laptop all day they're actually like do you think we're watching more media today than we used to or less what do you think more more cell phones yeah just more accessibility yeah now now maybe not shows as much as just the social media I think it's all mixed together it's all mixed together we're always looking at screens right yeah yeah yeah yeah we're always welcome is that a good thing or bad thing it's horrible is it yes come on pops because I have an addictive personality and I definitely have binge watched and I haven't watched TV in a couple months you know I just find myself binge watching on pure flicks like constantly so it's I don't fear that exists anymore no it's still there pure flix is there okay I just saw ad but Netflix um I get so like engulfed and Amanda what about those shows slow we're kids the cliffhanger and you had to wait a week no it's just yeah so I got wrapped up and breaking bent Breaking Benjamin Breaking Bad yeah it's Breaking Bad that was on ah is that on which network that looks that show then no mm-hmm do we need to pray no I if we could see a show of hands how many Christians have watched Breaking Bad probably everybody it's a lot a lot of people here making this show with us I held out a long time and then but this story draws you in right it's just you know what it is it's it's it's even though that it's really like negative the content it's really like the art how they put it together is but there's also a redemptive story line a lot of times and some of this so let's talk about convictions with television all right how much is too much of what should we be watching cuz I find myself like trying to watch what I watch right but then I hear everybody talking about stuff and I just feel like I'm missing out so like what are your convictions when it comes to what you watch manases says you know I this is one of those topics I don't know I have I think I'm still trying to figure out what my convictions are because I think as a minister to be an effective one you kind of have to know what's happening in the world and I have to see the latest shows that are out to so you can create messages around certain things or reference certain things or and really to stay up to date on culture so it's really interesting to me cuz I would say if you go through my iPod or my iPhone or my netflix account or Hulu account or whatever it is I have cable I'm listening and watching everything just to stay relevant with what's happening in culture so I don't know if I have a good answer for the normal parishioner or the normal you know Christian out there but what I would say is you know the the basic why don't you put you in your ears and through your eyes yeah because you know the Bible talks about us sending our minds on things above yeah in heavenly places keeping our minds on God that would produce a certain prudent in our life so I would say that as your pastor and you're doing it that's that's the tension for me it's you want to stay aware of what's going on stay relevant and stick because for me people are talking about stuff sure daddy left behind and not know what's going on if I'm trying to speak to a culture I got to know what they're there watching I think it's all about the season of life you're in and where God has you so for me when I first got saved I needed to really change my mind and renew my mind until I got to a place where I started understanding how God wanted me to interface with these different things so for me it was like okay at one time I was just consuming it for entertainment and it was starting to lead me and influenced me until I had to go through a season of okay let me put nothing but positivity in my in my ears and watching positive things and I let me get rid of all negative influences until I am mature enough to enter back into that world now from the perspective of staying aware with what's happened with the mind of Christ you can view to the pure all things are pure right it's interesting because if you were gonna just only keep positive messages in your life there are certain parts of the Bible you couldn't read because you encounter just the book of Genesis alone as we count incest and rape and things that are like well if I visualize some of that stuff those are things I stumble on or I don't know there's a lot of heavy stuff and murder and intrigue and that's the kind of stuff you make good well that make good TV shows yeah so there's a tension there it is I mean I honestly do think one the Holy Spirit will reveal it to you in the moment yeah you will have a conviction you don't need to watch that show right you don't need to do this you don't need to do that like I'll be well I won't say that but yes that's what you get addicted to a show to like it kind of draws you in they're made they always end on a cliffhanger so you have to watch the next one like you were saying yeah and you do you we binge watch that's a new term because when I was a kid that wasn't an option you couldn't binge watch you had to wait two weeks a week till next Friday at 8 o'clock and join us next time when Silver Spoons silver yes sir the Dukes of Oz Mia and now it's like man it's you you get so engrossed and you could watch now on a flight or something like that I've long flights out west for me watch three or four episodes of a show instead of a movie like I love that story that developing plot draws you in and you do learn a lot but like so what are some convictions that do you have any convictions about this like what we should be watching and not watching just for me myself like especially when I'm with my daughter and everything I won't you know these we love comedies we love Will Ferrell and and Jim Carrey and all this but if that if it goes too far with the sexual stuff like there's this thing called common sense media yep and it tells you exactly what's in the movie I'm not gonna sit there with my daughter and watch some crazy sexual yeah right and and hear about someone talking about women like that for an hour and a half you know watch it with your daughter it's not gonna happen I don't care if she's twenty five thirty she's 19 right now but so those are my convictions and even with myself um going back to the metal monk that I mentioned on a previous episode uh yeah I kind of I kind of just shut off the TV and yeah and don't do don't watch that because I like to do other things you know I like to uh you know Paul was like thrown into prison but he had the most crazy encounters with God so those that's I haven't had stuff like Paul but like that's my dream so you try to spend time with the Lord we talked about that yeah and I love reading extended prayer worship reading yeah and it's like my life is crazy I'm I play in front of thousands of people in the road metal music and banging my head so maybe that's my my other side that keeps me like at peace and life you know yeah cuz it's so extreme the two right banging my head load music and then my favorite thing to do is just quiet no TV music reading whatever so that's what it's one of those things you mentioned your daughter so for me you got a young one in the house - yeah I've got three teenagers and we share a Netflix account we have a family Netflix account so they see what I'm watching oh yeah sure and there's things that I would watch that I wouldn't want them to watch for me there's things I would watch that I don't really want my wife to watch you know it's like ah this is kind of gritty and this is a man thing and you don't need to be like cuz I know it bothers her and she might have nightmares like she's very sensitive to things yeah I'm not very sensitive whether that's good bad or a product of watching too many like some war stories like yes yeah call man movies I mean that's kind of sexist but like my thing is like the violence just doesn't seem to bother me I don't know that that's a good thing me neither but so so I'll watch that but I don't really want them seeing that and I'm picky about and have been as a dad what we watch but then you know it's like well dad does that show I noticed you've been watching that is that good for us no so you know what what's really helped in our household did angel you mentioned pure flix I think it's the same thing it's an online filter so we watch stuff through like Apple TV and video actually filters the shows so we're able to watch shows that I would never sit and watch with my kids but because it edits the scenes and it edits out the language I think it's pretty cool yeah I mean you know honestly I would say you know just to be really clear for people out there that are going I need some concrete what are you saying yeah I think for me it's like you know run everything through the future of you know obviously the obvious scriptures that say set your mind on things above right yeah watch what you put in your eyes why should you put in your ears why should you show yourself in general I think that's a general principle that that will influence you but beyond that I think the lens is OK God to fo what do you want me to get out of this like what is the purpose of me doing this and I don't think if you can't answer that question then I'm not sure you should be engaging in it because there's no purpose for but can we have so this is part of the this is part of the discussion I wanted to have is this whole binge watching thing can you just have moments like we veg out in front of the TV like man I just need to turn my mind off I need to just sit and watch something sure is that okay definitely just depends on what your binge watching okay you know so watch what you watch but you can see could sit there and as long as it's pg-13 sure I mean you know it is sold I'm an authority on pg-13-rated are so on and so forth right now again I'm still trying to figure it out myself but what I what I would say is why are you you know what is the purpose of it why are you watching it and the biggest question of all aren't you in a season of life where you can handle what you're watching that's a big one that's it is what you're watching influencing you to do certain things that God wouldn't want you to do well and that's why the discussion with my kids is a little bit like you're still forming values you're still learning how to see the world and if you start seeing the world this way actually one of my oldest son started reading a book and it was a Christian novel yeah and he started reading this Christian novel and it was going somewhere but the characters were so depraved it's like dad I don't even really want to read about some of the stuff these characters are doing I just don't even want those images in my head he chose to just put the book down I said well it's a redemptive storyline and God's just showing that you know the the writers just showing us yeah I just don't really want to be exposed to that because yeah I just have a lot of stuff in my head and a lot of questions because that's so you know some people that's my wife yeah well my other one so my other sons kind of like wait that's a thing I want to know about that and he was double-click like let me check let me and he'll he'll even come to us and go I heard this new phrase woody what is this you know where I was watching a show and he doesn't my one son is like yeah I heard that I don't know what it is and it might be bad so I don't need to know about it my other sons like I heard this and it might be bad tell me everything you know yeah you've got one that's just very curious though and I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing but it could be a dangerous thing and so I have to be smart about what I expose you to they tend to like be allowed to watch a lot less than their peers is what we found out but so far the fruit which is a good thing yeah in terms of what you're building in them because they I mean we're living in a world now your first question of do we consume more media then we have of course yes every which means like when I was younger I mean it's even it's a lot I'll use the word worse than what it was when I was younger I didn't have so many act so much access to things and so I could if you will you if I'm using the turn right I could limit my exposure to things that I went that I wasn't ready for easier yes because it just wasn't accessible now yes boom there there boom boom boom boom so certain things like for instance I'll give you a quickie to someone and then I know we gotta go but for me I you know you kind of know my story we shared here real life yeah me and my twin sister we got adopted met our biological family for the first time in 25 years like three years ago Steve Harvey Show whatever people often ask me you know do you do you wish you would have met him earlier and I'm like and I answers always no and then people are a little bit shocked and I'm going I could I did not want to meet out I I'm glad I met them after I was old enough to really understand what was happening right because had I had they entered into my life around 15 or 16 I'm not sure I was intellectually ready to even know where to put that and so I think it's the same thing with television it's going are you in a mental space you ready for this yeah are you or does it enter into your life when you're not ready and at some point it can't just be a void because at some point we're gonna be exposed to things and we can't avoid everything it's how do we filter it alright well let's take a break okay let's talk a little bit about those those nuances in those lines we're talking about media talking about television here on Real Talk taking a break be right back [Music] hey everybody welcome back we can't stop talking so I'm glad you guys are back we took that break but I'm thinking about the being honest about the influence of media movies television in my life and it's it's interesting because I would say well I want a guard and I want to be careful what comes in some of the things that have inspired me have been secular movies that's so true right I love the one you do your hands this week yeah well you know a lot of the hands I do it but it's just but sick so sometimes in the Christian bubble it's like well if it's not Christian you know it's secular and that almost even sounds bad Christian or secular we make this divide yeah and I'm like to the pure all things are pure I find a redemptive storyline and so many things or if it's a nihilistic plot where it's just at all on is bad ago that's life without Jesus and that's why you know like I can always find a thread of biblical truth anything I will pour out my spirit on all flesh that's what he says and so I feel like God's gifts are working in people that aren't Christians for sure so so I get I've God uses things like that you know it's my spirit and they're not even Christian projects or anything so I totally agree remember the movie click with Adam Sandler I was the preview for a movie I love that movie me too but the preview for the movie focused on one like for second scene that was inappropriate with a lady and so I was like I don't want to watch that movie because I just seemed so inappropriate yeah and so like I heard from people it's got a good story I finally watched it one night and I'm not kidding that movie had me in tears and praying over my children at the end of the movie it was all about like the consequences of your actions and like the logical extension of you ignoring your family and different things I'm like lord I want to redeem this moment right now when all prayed over all my children while they were sleeping and like made some decisions as a dad and I've not watched one Christian film that made me do that well I got a watch click listening is incredible well I was talking to a worship leader a friend of mine this past Sunday we just basically on a Christian TV show just recommend everybody watching Adam Sam we go working well make sure you ready for but it is not even crazy I mean it really is a phenomenal it's about time and looking back in any perspective but Mike wish my Christian my worship leader friend we were having a conversation on Sunday see I mean he's if I said his name people were knowing who's Tom primarily in the white space right the white space okay but he's recently coming to kind of taking a step back off off of a church staff but he's still kind of serving the church and I just kind of get into a conversation with them and it's relevant to what we're talking about about okay what's next for you like what are you saying it feels like God is shifting you in some places and he said you know the Lord's really just been rocking my world because he's like you know I feel like there there are three categories here or two main categories that Christians or non-christians usually walk in and it's either you you are a hundred percent just Christian your church all Christians double or you're 100 percent not Christian or just not associate either/or right they said there's a third category that the Lord has been challenging him on of Christians that kind of orbit orbit both of those worlds yeah where you still serve the church but you still have influence and culture which is which I think you can relate to this but there's this third space that he feels which I it totally I totally identify with you because I'm going to I I want to be that third in that third category I don't want to just be all just a hundred percent in the church I don't want to be 100 percent out outside the church I want to be right in the middle helping to bridge the gap I think that's that's what Jesus was he was aware of what's going on he was everywhere he was in the church then he had a bunch of influence and coach and he talked differently in both in both spaces and so I think that and that's a side kind of a sideways answer to relate to relate us back to whether Jesus watch Breaking Bad well again but what would Jesus know what was happening in Breaking Bad it's not what goes into a man that makes him unclean it's what comes out of him that's what he said Jesus you read the Gospels he's so he's wild he's all over the place so I wouldn't I wouldn't even answer that I was too busy I think he was too busy to binge-watch yeah yep but he was a third he was in that third category yeah he was right in the middle yeah and so he was able to under to take things from culture but he was also the perfect sinless son of God so like yes he was able like we talked about trying to have the mind of Christ or a redeemer take every thought captive to Christ he was Christ so for him to see the futility of this thinking or to filter that out or not be tempted by whatever scene is in that movie although he was tempted in every way just like us so he was fully man well one of my favorite scriptures by Jesus is by Jesus right one of my favorite things that he said is when he talked about leaving the 99 to go get the one yeah now here's to me this passage is is huge because at the time he's speaking to everyone Pharisees are their disciples are their non-believers believers and he drops into he drops into that atmosphere an example that is not religious because in the time everybody has she's sure so he was able to take something that was already relevant in culture and then go now let me use this to introduce you to a new truth and I think that's what I think about when I think about just being aware of what's happening in all forms of media you can have in the world you can have without like without like immersing yourself yes right because I think if we were having a discussion about is pornography bad Christian roundtable everybody's going yeah obvious of course there but things that what no but if it we should put a little bit of pornography in your TV show just you know like a couple scenes in episode is that bad I think yes or no like most likely probably not right that's not good for me no is not good for me either I want to see that so it's like yeah but like that's mixed into just about every show now right yeah every show that looks haffley interesting is TV mature which means basically like they're gonna mix it in at some point there's gonna be some stuff that's like whoa I mean you can fast-forward like we don't be legalistic but we don't at the same time like he wants us to grow from glory to glory with him you know yeah we our relationship has got to be growing if this this media all this media stuff is is stopping that growth and it's a problem you know it's all about the relationship with the Lord every we have different convictions right yeah some people watch some people watch sure certain things so they're trying to yeah being honest about the influence yes is it leading me closer to him is this a step in or furthering my relationship with Christ or his distraction a distraction are pulling me away from it yeah cuz there's a lot of things man there it's alluring and then I get into it and I realize minute that's shaped my attitude I started hearing language I'm not normally around and it lowered my standard or my conviction yeah so that word might slip out because I'm just I'm used to these characters that are now part of my life and they say it all the time and now I think I'm a mafia member or a gangster I've been watching shows and a scene came on I had turned TV off exactly yeah that's not appropriate I can't and that was a show that I had to drift away from and then there are multiple times when I'm trying to do research and understand okay everybody's watching the show what is this about that and I'm gonna turn it off here I can't watch that part of it be sure you know so just to your point I mean we just we got to know what's good for us whatever is pure right whatever's lovely wholesome if those are the things we're supposed to really be thinking on and meditating on like you said things above so just being honest about the level of influence it has I know and it is different for adults and levels of maturity in different seasons of our life having the self-awareness because our hearts deceitful right it's gonna be like oh this is fine this isn't a problem I know pastors that watch this that's the other thing for me is it's not only is it okay for me it's what kind of influence is it for the other people that are following me I can watch this and go okay that's not or an issue in my life and I can find redemptive plot lines not everybody's watching it for those reasons and seeing the same things for us with um with one of our kids it was like hey you're listening to a lot of music he's a great musician and his his teacher said well you really need to listen to a lot of different kinds of music if you're gonna be a great musician so he's immersing himself in music but like our rule was how much of it is Christian how much of it at all glorifies God and so he's made it his mission to like find great artists that are Christian yeah and that have good wholesome uplifting and it's not always easy especially if you're into more of a rock oriented you know it's like especially so this is something their mother and I sometimes talk about I think you gotta look bottom yeah Bonham is was anointed by God yes I think you did with his gift yeah yes not very good but anyway yeah closing thoughts I think you know I'm always gonna err on the side of you know two things what has God what does God want you to get out of this if you can't answer that question you probably shouldn't just be indulging in it and then what can you handle yeah and what can't you handle what it what are you watching is it influencing you and your behavior the moment you realize that you gotta get out and am I so that all the time I'm investing in this how much time am i investing in my spiritual progress is growth like exam I my one my older son likes to read the Bible like he's like I think about all the other things I do all the shows i watch and different things i think how much time am i investing in God's Word I'm like that's a lot of maturity that's a good it was convicting to me but then something you said on another episode we were talking about how your body is just the temple of the Lord right I think about that's true these are really his eyes and his brain in his ears like and it comes down to like jesus said my sheep know my voice they hear my voice yeah follow me so we need to follow him and we need to ask him Lord is this how do you feel about this it's okay for me to watch you know and so any he'll lead you and you'll feel the agree with that and we don't usually do that we usually justify and talk to each other and compare rather than just yeah ask the Lord is this good for me cuz what's good for one it's like meat sacrificed to idols yeah I don't touch it but I know you love this stuff anyway that's our show for today thank you guys for tuning in we were talking about TV media we're kicking off the conversation hopefully you kind of keep it going and especially with you and the Lord what's right for me what are the boundaries what are my limits should I be watching this ultimately we want to glorify have it but you shouldn't be watching yeah okay that's how we're gonna end right there thumbs up you shouldn't be watching that's it until next time keep it real and remember that god is crazy election [Music] you [Music]
