[Music] oh hold here yep that's right limited edition j laser hoodies get them now sign everyone nice plug nice plug shirts too so last time we made this thing fully expandable iron man helmet that gets put on your head automatically it's got a heads up display in the eye augmented reality with an ai voice assistant just like iron man definitely worth a watch if you haven't yet but i was reading your comments on that video and i guess it's just not good enough for you no no no you guys wanted the full expandable iron man mark 5 all right i'm almost afraid to ask this now but comment down below what you want me to make in my next video cause clearly if enough of you want it i'll make it happen or at least try to and if you do end up liking this please drop a like and subscribe if you want because we put some work into this one all right let's run the clips so in iron man 2 one of the first scenes was him fighting whiplash where he debuts this mark v armor the suit starts out as a sleek metal briefcase which gets tossed to tony which by the way would weigh way more than he would weigh by the way would the tongue twister would weigh way more than she made it seem but that's just the tip of the iceberg for the seemingly impossible anyways tony steps on the suit and it pops open to reveal about a million moving parts now i do got to give credit to the animation team at marvel just for all the detail they put in this scene i've probably watched the scene about a hundred times now way more than anyone should and every time i notice new things so first some handles pop out that were originally the handles for the briefcase he grabs them and then pushes down into what looked like become the arms of the suit he then lifts the suit up onto his body and places it onto his chest by now the suit is unfolded so you can see the chest and the shoulders which all are sliding into place he then opens up his arms and the pieces wrap around to attach i mean they did kind of use some motion blur to hide what was actually happening but it's all good and the shoulders fold back and the abs drop into place and it cuts into the arc reactor firing up again it really just shows the intricacy of this suit like look at all those tiny pieces on the side all moving like perfectly together also i never understood why he would put like the main power source so openly exposed on his chest like that's clearly the part you would aim for if you're trying to fight him literally a big glowing shiny target that powers the suit it just looks too cool though anyways then it cuts back out to the arms or all the armor armor slides out to cover up the arms and the repulsors light up then it pans down to the legs where again you can see the extremely complex mechanism expanding again they used a bit more motion blur to hide exactly what's happening but in simplest form it looks like it's just pieces sliding out from one another then of course the helmet pops out from the back kind of out of nowhere and folds over his face like we made in the last video so that all happens in like 20 seconds and overall i think the animation team did a great job with this like all the movements and mechanics are based in what seems like physically possible mechanisms and where things aren't quite possible they do a great job hiding it all together this makes for an amazing scene that really shows off tony stark's engineering ability and it's going to be nearly impossible to replicate this like the more parts the more complexity the more things that are gonna break just a fact of life i don't think they could have fit any more parts into this suit to be honest so we're gonna have to get a little creative basically i'll be happy if we can get the entire suit to fit in a briefcase suitcase type thing have it going seamlessly ish like we pick it up put it on our body and it just somehow goes on that'd be great and i'm trying to mimic the movie as much as possible you know stay true to how he did it like i think we could make the abs pretty close maybe the arms and legs uh if we also make it full metal that's that's another thing i want to try maybe we throw in some lights and lasers too for good measure i mean that's what we do here but overall this project's definitely one of those that lies well outside my comfort zone like i'm not in a cosplay i've never built like a full suit of armor or anything so you know taking on a project of this size i really want to do it justice so i started with some research uh you know just see if anyone's done anything like this before and i found this one guy ryan brooks who made something similar to this looks really complex and pretty impressive uh but it's not quite as smooth as i want it like it doesn't just go on you and it doesn't look like it's made of metal either actually i couldn't even find any regular iron man suits that were actually man-made made of metal i found one 3d printed titanium one that like adam savage did but none that actually full down into a briefcase yeah so at this point i realized i was in pretty deep like the closest thing i found was this like ninja armor tatami japanese folding armor which isn't gonna be much help so i thought maybe i could start at the other end take an existing model of the mark five and then just make it full so i bought a full 3d digital model of the mark v uh that was actually already sliced up so you can print it out and make a full foam cosplay armor out of this i thought maybe i could just modify the template somehow so we can like make it out of metal and have all the parts slide together then unfold when we want the suit so i started with the legs and i made a cardboard model cut it out just like how you'd make a regular cosplay armor piece put it together and i found out this is actually gonna be way more work than i thought and i already thought it was gonna be a lot um first of all because uh it's supposed to be made of foam they're including bends that just are impossible with metal or cardboard even metal especially then we also have to make it slide together and i also realized i have no idea how to actually edit these files so i think it's gonna be a little bit more trouble than it's worth after several days of just you know spinning my wheels i realized we're not gonna be able to take the easy way out with this project see with a lot of my projects i've figured out that if i you know spend enough time you know do enough research i usually come up with like a creative clever solution for the project that's pretty easy to do the yondu arrow i just used a drone spider-man shrink suit found the nightingale stuff that shrinks when you put current through it but this process is a little different see as it turns out there's no easy way to make a fully expanding metal iron man suit without actually making a fully expanding metal iron man suit i can't find anything like this that exists guess we're gonna have to be doing this one from scratch first started with the legs like they're just fancy tubes right so we can kind of use like a telescoping mechanism i thought they collapsed into themselves we can store it in a case couple issues though right off the bat first iron man's legs have some sort of weird curve to them like the shin goes backwards for whatever reason they kind of get narrower around the knee there's the knee joint we got to worry about so all the parts won't like slide into each other also the biggest issue how are we going to fabricate this i want it to be metal but i've never done anything like this to this scale or with metal so i had to up my game a bit with the help of this machine right here this is a crossfire pro cnc plasma cutter from langmuir it's just an awesome piece of equipment and this project wouldn't be possible without it basically it's going to take all the hassle out of cutting metal you just got to export your 2d files plug in the plasma cutter hit a button boom cuts any part up to about a half inch thick steel i think so with this machine we'll hopefully be able to get super intricate details that we would be impossible otherwise hopefully this way we'll be able to do the suit justice like the one in the movie so i'm thinking i can design the suit on solidworks then use their sheet metal function to convert my 3d shapes to 2d sketches that we can then send the plasma cutter cuts them out then we can bend them back into the 3d models that way we can design everything on the computer first you know make sure it all fits plasma cut it out spot weld it all together we should have our suit obviously easier said than done but you know it's the best plan i got so for the legs i ended up doing a two-stage collapse mechanism basically the shin collapses into themselves and then the upper leg collapses in that way we keep the knee joints separate so it can get a little smaller around there and also bend that way it'll look more natural the goal here is to strike a nice balance between fitting in a case and looking like iron man so i figured we can do both legs like this and the hip piece can slide down around the legs and connect them so all together this piece has a dimension of about like 16 inches by 16 by 12 deep it's not bad but you know we still got to fit in the whole chest the arms the stomach and the back so i cut out and bent the leg pieces from some 16 gauge cold rolled steel and i put them together to see if my plan work definitely took a little bit of finessing but i mean everything seemed to fit together just gonna be a matter of being as precise as possible with like my bending to make sure everything slides all right and i used some kind of thick steel because i didn't want this thing to be flimsy we can't have it breaking when we're putting it on and off and it's also way cooler that i can stop like blades all right hit me i'll get harder i'll get harder any harder okay [Music] it works fire give me a little pop yup yup another pop yup this show is proven a point here all right all right get the gun anyways to connect the segments i used some nylon straps positioned in such a way that the legs could still slide in and out of each other and thankfully the actual suit in the movies features a lot of these leg breaks because it folds up as well you know we're actually getting the design somewhat right so i think we make the other leg you know attach it to the hip piece and the hip piece can fold around everything then we can kind of step into it and slide them on like pants that way we won't need any fancy motors or any other complications that are uh you know just gonna potentially break even still though there's hundreds of pieces we're gonna have to plasma cut bend and attach to make the suit yeah this part is what took a while so about two weeks into this project probably hours of counting today cut some parts out but honestly it feels like i'm hardly even making a dent i way underestimated the scale of this project it's about 2 am now also because there's gonna be a few small cracks in the suit that the metal doesn't quite cover i got some shiny pants to hopefully make it look a little bit better may i present to you the shiny pants dexterity [Applause] then i realized maybe we could even use chain mail yeah look at that i don't know kind of looks cool and that way if we wear this underneath it'd really be cut resistant i don't know we'll see anyways for the abs i really like how he puts on the center piece spreads out his arms abs fall down arms go into place i think if we cut a bunch of metal sheets and stack them one on top of each other they should be able to sit behind each other and then slide out when we need them we can even cut and bend some hooks into them so they all latch onto each other and they can just fall out using gravity again pretty simple so once again i'm although everything on solidworks making sure to leave space to fit some detailed plates because there's a lot of detail on the abs in the movies we do have the plasma cutter so you know might as well and i mean digitally it all slides together well but i mean the real world is another story so again i cut everything out and started putting it together i spot welded the detailed plates using a stark spot welder which i thought was pretty funny and i fent the little hooks into place but you know it wasn't quite working as well as i wanted like sometimes it would work but other times you know go at a weird angle you know how metal works if it gets caught it really doesn't want to give and i just knew the more links we added to these abs the worse the problem was gonna get so then i remembered my old friend magnets two magnets this works way better way simpler than the thing i originally made which kind of sucks i spent an entire day just trying to get everything to line up right on solidworks so it would actually slide properly actually ended up using some more nylon straps just to take kind of the weight off the magnets because they're good at keeping everything in line but not so good with the weight so i just kind of used them as a guide and now we go from one ab to an entire plate just like the movies so for the side plates i'm using a similar technique of having the panels slide out from each other then we can attach them with more nylon straps you know do what we just did before and we can paint them red you know add a little bit of detail to match the movie all right day i don't even know what it is another grinder but making progress we got all the legs uh more legs over there arms shops a mess but uh you know at least we got a nice sunset to look at let's talk arms these are going to be a bit tricky you know surprise surprise because i really just want to be able to you know put the chest piece on slide my arms out and have everything you know do its thing and they also got to fit in the briefcase somehow so if we actually throw it back to the movie scene again we see that he actually puts his hand into what looks like the beginning of the arms which is great because that way we can just have the glove inside there as well slide our hand in and we have the first part of the arm already made which is great because you know making a whole metal glove that's retractable is going to be nearly impossible caught a break there so at least now all we got to do is figure out the upper arm and bicep area and i think we can borrow a similar design from the legs you know just have the forearm compact and then the bicep compact and then have it all just you know extend out on the yarn i also added some detail from the movies i like little spikes on the arm links just trying to make it more realistic because again we got that plasma cutter and we can paint it too to really make it look like the movies so just little things we can do to uh really spruce this thing up but speaking of that let's get cut [Music] now i thought it might ease into the whole plasma cutting metal workshop thing maybe cut like one or two parts for a project you know nope full suit [Music] so for the hands we already have some full metal iron man hands left over from my last project uh we just gotta paint them red and we actually gave a pair of these away in my last video we'll pick a winner for that and that is right here congratulations before that we gave away some custom black panther shoes i made to the guy right here sammy all right so for this video's giveaway i asked you guys what you wanted on instagram and a lot of you said 3d printers which i think is just an amazing idea it's just such a good tool for creation now i've always tried to inspire encourage you guys to make stuff so something like a 3d printer will definitely elevate your guys's game um so if you want to win this ender 3 i was just arguably the best beginner 3d printer on the market just drop a like and subscribe obviously then pop on over to our instagram like the post for this video and then follow us over there and now here's some projects that you guys actually made yourselves and then sent to me check them out [Music] love to see these build guys sorry i forgot the segment of the last video but i'm definitely bringing it back because again it's just super inspirational and fun to see what you guys come up with so again if you've made anything cool that you're proud of that you want to share definitely send it my way at jayla's video on instagram or email as well all right so now we got the arms done as well as the side pieces and abs we should be able to just step into the legs slide our hands into the arms and lift the chest piece right up onto our body extend our arms and then break some motors pull the arm pieces to extend over our arm but speaking of that chest piece we got to make that too um now this part actually doesn't have to expand or anything which is a relief uh you know because we're just going to pick it up and put it on but we do have to add lights for the arc reactor motors for the arms and batteries to power everything so i modeled the plate for the arc reactor i'm using references for the mark v suit then i also modeled the intricate upper chest part that kind of looks like a leaf from the suit as well it's really just a matter of getting everything to fit together and look good definitely took some finessing but i think i got it then for the motor that pulls in the arm i used a gear dc motor along with a little pulley i 3d printed um and all that's attached to an rc relay switch that i can control the remote so we can go forward and backward that way i can control the arms from my hand you know no messy wires to get in the way of all the sliding parts to actually get the arc reactor to light up i used a mini ring light along with a piece of plastic i sanded to give it a nice diffused look then i 3d printed a piece to hold it off then we took that top piece i plasma cut gave it a nice polish and then put it on top almost got the whole body i think we're up to our shoulders and neck now um so for the neck i just modeled the part on solidworks again you know it just goes around my shoulders leaving room for my neck plasma cut it out and bent it into shape then for the shoulders kind of do the same thing these were honestly one of the trickier parts to this suit because we don't have a way to make things round yet we just have a way to make like series of little bends cut out three different sections for each shoulder you know bend them into shape connected them up as best i could again using some more nylon straps but after attaching all those pieces to the suit we finally have all the parts which we then had to paint and polish but this part was honestly super satisfying just seeing it all come together it was just a matter of sanding each part over and over with finer grains adding some polishing compound until we got that nice shine oh yeah then we also had to throw a little hot rod red in there as well i actually used two different colors for this uh one color is like a darker cranberry red then i finished it off with some red metallic car paint uh which gives it that classic red shimmer but a little bit darker just like the iron man suit i mean just pulling off that tape and seeing the nice contrast between the polished metal and the red paint you know i've worked with a ton of other materials and i have to say nothing quite compares to the quality of some nicely finished well-crafted metal which is why this video is sponsored by ridgewater like if iron man were to have a wallet it'd be this one it's lightweight sleek full metal over 30 different colors you can choose from like this metallic blue carbon fiber burnt titanium and because it's metal it protects against rfid tech that people use to try and steal your card just by being near you and holds like 12 cards with a clip for cash [Music] even holds my metal wallet tool too which i always carry around you just press down on this little channel cut out in the back and your cards pop out it's also super satisfying to put cards in they just slide in so pleasantly you know i really like that part it's also super hassle free i mean just because it's so minimal it slides in and out of your pocket without any trouble like this thing will last you way longer than any leather wallet or something plus you can use it for 45 days and if you don't like it just send it back full refund no reason to not try it if you're curious so you can get 10 off today with free worldwide shipping and returns just go to ridge.com jlaser again ridge.com jlaser and you can use the code jlaser uh you know for your 10 off links below all right all right so we're almost done but you might be asking what about the back of the suit and also the helmet so right now basically we just have a bundle of compact parts but we still got to make it into a case uh so used a bit more sheet metal to form sort of a shell around them give it a slightly better aesthetic i also added a handle so we can pick it up um then that shell can actually unfold and we can use some magnets and stuff to clip it onto our back but the better way to go is to use our metal backpack we made in the last video which has the helmet attached to it that automatically puts it on our head so finally after hundreds of hours thousands of dollars spent on this project the suit is ready oh yeah we also added lasers and fire too so you know definitely drop that like if you enjoy it and subscribe okay enjoy [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] so looking back on this project obviously i'm extremely proud of what we did just the sheer detail of all this stuff you know coming from hardly ever working with metal i feel like i know a lot more now obviously there's things i would change like it wouldn't be fair to you if i didn't tell you guys some of the troubles we had with the suit first off i found out why no one's made metal suits before they're heavy as like by the end of filming i almost passed out from wearing this thing they're just so big and bulky and it's hard to move it's not super easy to put on you know didn't quite go as smoothly as we made it look but nonetheless i mean it still was a first version and it's still what i think is the only metal iron man suit that fits in a briefcase someone still call that a win so thank you guys very much for watching this video if you've actually made it this far you're a real one it really means a lot to me so comment what you want me to make next and we'll see in the next video peace you
