[Music] SuperMario Odyssey is a charming brilliant and addictive game from start to finish it has flaws sure as nearly all games do but it still resulted in one of Mario's finest adventures I suspect that fans will long debate which of the game's kingdoms is the best and it's certainly true that not all were created equal some feel bloated with too many power moons while others seem to waste an amazing level concept on hardly any moons at all many are astoundingly easy while others provide an especially daunting task for such a small man like myself you should see me with the motion controls so today I joke rook will give you my personal ranking of my favorite kingdoms keep in mind that these are my personal opinions and that all kingdoms will be shown and ranked so spoilers will be everywhere but I will not reveal what happens when you hit 100% completion let's get started [Music] starting right off with one of the game's unlockable levels we have the Dark Side of the Moon or as it is officially called just darkside wouldn't want to rip off a certain album this world moon this moon level world whatever is unlocked by collecting 250 power moons and after beating the main story what at first seems exciting turns into a rather uninspired handful of challenges ranging from refighting the brutal x' for the millionth time to redoing a few special stages that have become even tougher don't get me wrong the challenge is welcomed but the overall level itself is tedious and bland and since most of the content here is reused it's hard to rank it any higher also if you love yelling and frustration try out this level it's great just just kidding I hate it it's it's the worst cloud kingdoms Nimbus arena is basically the midpoint of the game's story and the point in which you get to fight Bowser for the first time the battle itself is unique and awesome and features a pretty sexy hair cut from the Koopa King himself it's almost an irony of Bowser's dapper appearance that Mario dressed himself so minimally come on Mario put some clothes on you're embarrassing me in front of my guests much better Mario when returning to the level later on there's a handful of challenges including a fun 2d segment and the chance to recreate a goombas face hmm it's no good perfect all in all it's a wonderful boss fight and cutscene but the lack of additional content unique NPCs huff and puff anyone and a more creative art style prevents it from being ranked higher snow Kingdom is the lowest ranked real Kingdom on this list and for good reason how would you describe it I'd say it has snow heavy snow and there's ice and typical snow enemies scattered around oh yeah and some snow but there really isn't anything else to it the NPCs are cute the village music is nice and the races are okay compared to the other main kingdoms this one is simply forgettable both gameplay and aesthetically speaking it's not bad by any means and there's still plenty of fun and exploring to be had but this kingdom just feels bland and empty so while it may have some nice elements there's no way I'd put it in my top ten guys I'm sorry for that of the two water themed kingdoms featured in Mario Odyssey many will probably come to agree that this is the weaker sure it's gorgeous its massive and it has a fun boss fight but it's also a great example of what I meant by a kingdom that's just too big and bloated and lacking in substance there's tons of power moons here and many are lazily scattered around in the water and the NPC's aren't as interesting as in other kingdoms on the other hand the whole soda water thing is pretty neat I really liked how it fizzled and the level is host to some pretty challenging wall jumps with Cappy wait that's not how I was supposed to do those oh yeah and volleyball is super addictive if ridiculously generous I definitely miss that mr. referee take back my point right now you know what I quit I'm done with volleyball I hate it in my first few hours with Mario Odyssey I wasn't sure how much I'd end up loving the game and to be honest this course just didn't work for me capturing the t-rex really isn't any fun is there's not much you can do with him the course doesn't have a lot to do in general and there's hardly anything to do that's inherently fun or exciting on the plus side it has one of the most beautiful and epic pieces of music in the game and taking control of a Chain Chomp is appropriately exciting I just wish there was a bit more to it all and that the world felt more like it belongs in a Mario game I'm sure many of you disagree but to me it just didn't feel right mmm but those views are so good [Music] wait a second am i dead is this video game hell it's so cool that's basically what my brain sounded like when Mario first ended up in the ruined Kingdom it's the second smallest Kingdom in the game but plays host to one magnificent boss fight that feels right out of a Zelda game in fact the whole level looks like Twilight Princess cross with blood-borne and it's downright beautiful the boss itself is so well done and among the game's best one might argue it also feels a bit off in a Mario game but I personally really enjoy the unique art styles in many of the games kingdoms after beating the dragon for the first time I did make one pretty big mistake I climbed along his back in search of a moon and fell off my untimely death unfortunately the game decided to be a stickler and make me fight him all over again from the start uh also I can't help but noticing something entirely unrelated but when the Odyssey takes flight I feel like Mario's scared out of his mind to me that just looks like a face of fear not of curiosity I'm I'm a little scared for Mario right now actually no while it may not be the best Bowser level in series history it is definitely the biggest and most beautiful I love the Japanese inspired design and music the challenge could use a tune-up for this late in the game but then again Odyssey is never really all that difficult the battle against the brutal machine is fun and reminds me a lot of fighting the Koopa brothers in the Bowser machine in Paper Mario the cutscenes are great even if they did allow for some pretty unsettling pictures of peach you might want to get that looked at when returning to the level after beating the game this toad has become quite the authoritarian and won't let Mario pass shortcut we'll see about that ah what you gonna do about it little man honestly it's a fun level not bad not great and that's all I have to say about it now if you'll excuse me I have a Pinocchio bird to sacrifice he's dead now he's dead there's nothing else to see here lake kingdom has the honorable distinction of transitioning us from our good kingdoms to our great kingdoms lake kingdom is far superior to seaside kingdom mostly due to having more interesting NPCs a focus narrative and a far more developed world that doesn't feel too vast and empty nor small and cramped not only is it the first place you find dory whose presence is always welcome but it's also the kingdom that feels most akin to Super Mario Sunshine no key Bay in particular the way Mario transitions from water to dry ground and the palace interior is awesome and I can't help but notice the clear inspiration from zoara's domain there isn't much to complain about besides the fact that ultimately it's still a water level and so there are some tedious components it's also lacking in any standout segments bosses or a unique capturable enemies then again it does give you the chance to get up close and personal with Goom bet since she's not on a ledge for once I like your mustache mr. moustache what the hell are you talking about woman wowie oh wait a minute hold yourself together man it's just your reflection but what is this OH clipping or my face hey mister wanna hang out sometime I thought the blood do you think so I hate to goombahs wait a second but not true at all Mario I know you're in there get out of my head I feel like more people should be disturbed by this the wooded Kingdom is one of the courses that really grew on me over time after not being a fan of it my first playthru it felt to open and bland and I just really didn't care for it since then however I've come to enjoy the fun platforming fighting one of the best bosses in the game and playing as one of my top five capturable enemies I won't be ranking my favorite transformations but if I were the up root would definitely be at number five as it turns out I initially discovered the deep forest by accidentally falling off pin was quite surprised to see Mario still alive it was actually a pretty special moment and up until recording for this video I had no idea that there were t-rex is in the game that could actually attack you as I'd only ever seen the sleeping beast in the Cascade Kingdom so on one hand that partially redeems the t-rex in my eyes and on the other I can no longer sleep at night or during the day but especially at night so yeah what did Kingdom everybody yay wait you can possess a tree okay forget everything I said wooden kingdom is number one in terms of creativity and overall production value obviously darker side is undeserving of a higher rank than lake or wooded Kingdom but I really wanted to give it some love for finally offering a real challenge even if it's still not nearly as tough as a certain predecessors finale curse you hammer brothers you know what you did the inclusion of most of the games NPCs and the game's standout music is of course welcome and I couldn't help but chuckle at Pauline's usage of the phrase jump man I won't spoil the end of the level but all in all it's a great end to a wonderful game and it truly felt like all of the game's themes were coming together for one epic postgame finale sure I could have ranked it lower but hey I didn't so I'm sorry wait should I be sorry for that in mario odyssey you collect power moon's most kingdoms prominently feature the moon suspended high in the sky and each has its own mysterious moon cube thingy that you know you all expected to have some super cool lore and were let down when it was just a moon cube thingy so what I'm trying to say is it probably wasn't a surprise that the final boss fight was on the moon itself and it's a nice nod to mario galaxy and to a lesser extent the thousand-year door in which peaches also held captive on the moon well I mean I guess she could just walk out right I mean nothing's stopping her come on leave the ring peach it's not worth it save yourself what we end up getting is a fairly standard moon area followed by a beautiful church set piece complete with chiming bells in frogs everything about the boss battle is perfectly executed the return of sexy Bowser a fun platforming segment and my third favorite capturable enemy not that I'm keeping track Oh in the accompanying music though strange at first really complements the ending cutscene quite nicely and speaking of banding cinematic itself it had everything I could possibly ask for sure you can complain peach didn't just simply push Bowser's side and choose Mario but since when is there romance ever really acknowledged I do wish there were a bit more to the moon cube mystery a longer ending cinematic akin to Super Mario Galaxy and a more lengthy challenging level prior to reaching church and so Moon Kingdom doesn't quite hit my personal top 5 but it's still one of the best final boss levels on Mars resume wait but why are they holding the reception in the church like is that a thing the luncheon Kingdom almost flawlessly combines every element of what I expect from a Mario Odyssey level a unique theme yes beautiful graphics and music yes a great boss fun platforming and interesting locals yes it's also another fantastic example of a level that's not too large nor too small and features the perfect amount of moons and objectives actually wouldn't even mind if they had gone further with it yes for the art style I think it's brilliant while others may feel differently but come on watching Mario burn alive and pink yummy new is just the best hey Mario did you have an accident in the kitchen there this is one of the first levels to be a bit more challenging which is nice and exploring the town and countryside pantry whatever it is is a swell time I'm not sure how Forks cook without hands and where are all the spoons and knives - the forks use Forks when they eat do they eat with each other how do they hold each other are the criminals steak knives cruelly the possibilities are endless [Music] where to begin with the stellar cap kingdom well for starters it's downright gorgeous and features a cosy little town full of the adorable cap species oh and geez I forgot to mention the music I think it really may be my favorite piece in the entire game it builds the strange dreary but hopeful atmosphere so perfectly and I've honestly spent so much time just strolling around the town listening to it now back to that art style the obvious comparison is to Nightmare Before Christmas but I get a much stronger tomorrow incorporation vibe specifically World of Goo and human resource machine I mean just look at those buildings so you're wondering if I love it so much why don't I marry it and by Mary you mean rank it even higher on my list well because the top 4 are that good but also because it has - my least favorite transformations in the game the Frog and the para Goomba the pair Goomba in particularly do some pretty boring fog hunts for power moons okay so true story when I first started the game up and began the level I didn't realize you couldn't go in the fog I don't know what I was thinking so I joke pro may hold the record for fastest unintentional death in mario odyssey approximately 4 seconds it hurts to be this good at video games also peaches outfit here wow just wow [Music] if I could get away with it I'd put all of the top four kingdoms tied for first because to me they're all equally wonderful unfortunately I can't get away with it because I'm only an inch tall and y'all will be coming for me if I cop out I can't deal with that unfortunately though I may be dealing with regard list because I suspect this is a really unpopular opinion but my number four without any further delaying my excruciating death [Music] sand kingdom okay okay listen sand kingdom is freaking amazing it easily could have been number one it's huge and filled with tons to do in fact it's the largest kingdom in the game the town and residents are perfectly designed the dancing is mind-blowing the music transitions perfectly when moving from the desert to the ruins and the various locations Oasis ruins and pyramid are all unique and fun to explore both in the freezing night and in the sizzling Sun this kingdom is loads of pure fun also I'm not going to rank my top 5 transformations but if I were the bullet bill would be my number 4 so what's wrong with it well besides these locals not sharing the goods they promised me absolutely nothing unfortunately I just like the top three even more I guess if you really require a complaint from me it maybe has a bit too much empty space I mean that's a lot of desert but I don't mind too much and if we're being honest the views and diving from extreme heights is more fun here than it is in the Zelda oh and I was able to find ways to skip many of the 2d sections fairly easily even this huge one here which saves tons of time just make sure not to grab the ledge on accident as Mario cannot pull himself up and you have to start the whole thing all over it takes lots of practice but you'll get there throughout the entire game I was constantly thinking man all these places are called kingdoms I bet the Mushroom Kingdom will be here and if it has Peach's castle from mario 64 oh man well I freaked well I was right and when I realized I was right I freaked truthfully this was going to be number 1 until I realized that that was nostalgia speaking and that it's really not deserving of anything higher than three ignoring all the mario 64 references it's still a great level with a fun little Goomba community one of the toughest 2d sections in the game beautiful imagery and some pretty challenging second-round boss fights now add in the Mario 64 connections draining the moat plays music staring up at the old wing cap level grants you a power store Yoshi is on top of the castle the Mario 64 costume is perfection and you're able to return to the back courtyard from Mario 64 the list goes on and on and it's all just so much better than I can even Express oh and for a few more stray observations you still can't read the plaque here which I find pretty hilarious I almost was able to jump out of the back courtyard but there seems to be an invisible ceiling too bad we actually get to see the new models and animations with the Mario 64 costume including what Mario 64 is Mario would look like if he were freezing or rolling down a hill in the horizon we see a desert a forest and a large body of water it's obviously the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom but I'm counting it as a deliberate Paper Mario 64 map reference because that's just what makes me happy I do wish the waterfall in Canon appeared and in their proper place and finally my sister was sitting next to me when I got some power stars and was all like that's a star why does it say you got a moon quite frankly I had no idea how to respond to that oh boy I can hear this screaming already I get the feeling that most of you know much like Metro Kingdom but I can't imagine why it's true that it has possibly the least inspired art style in the game and the human ish characters are kind of weird but I honestly don't see any other problems there's tons of verticality but there's also so much to do on the ground whether you're going for the RC World Record which I've spent way too much time on playing some classic Mario in the theater or just running around exploring you're bound to have a good time in new dog city no left turns we'll see about that jump rope is another welcomed minigame die version but for me it's basically the same out of the game as it is in the game though I do wonder why every person wears business clothes is everyone at work where the kids humans are so weird also how the actual heck did these people end a dog get over here can you go into electric wires too or something now of course the highlight of the entire kingdom besides the fact that there's a Death Star in front of the City Hall I'm not even kidding is the festival oh you know what I'm talking about perhaps one of the best moments in the entire game when the talented Pauline seems her heart out while Mario gets the chance to play a Donkey Kong inspired 2d course so many goosebumps the first time I played which for me is basically just plastic melting and bubbling up it's really uncomfortable don't ask I also had a great time upstaging Pauline during the concert in case you were wondering what this is so again Metro is my number two I find it to be pure fun it's not perfect but then no Kingdom is I don't need you anymore Cappy I got this on my own I'll get there eventually Oh maybe it's just me or maybe everyone feels this way but ultimately the lost kingdom just had to take my number one spot until Mario arrived in this astoundingly gorgeous course I liked the game a lot it had some great ideas and fun bosses and would certainly shape up to be a wonderful adventure but once I crash-landed and stepped out into the amazingly detailed Lost Kingdom I lost my mind the game changed I'm a big sucker for a wonderful art style it's one of the reasons I like Wind Waker and the witness so much and Lost Kingdom actually reminds me of those games in a way but with its own Mario touch it's simply incredible the various colored trees the insects flying sporadically around the endless purple ocean this Kingdom also largely utilizes my absolute favorite capture ability the tropical wiggler okay now listen you've got no chance of me rank in the captures but if I did wiggler here is easily number one stretching out with those adorable little worms to navigate treacherous chasms just feels right literally thanks to the HD grumble and allows for some pretty fantastic gamblin it also makes fools out of idiots like me who thought you were actually supposed to jump across these wooden stumps I also really enjoyed Mario losing Cappy for a short time not only because of the brief gameplay detour it provided but also the reference to Mario 64 lost kingdom possibly showcases better than any other course that happy medium I've been talking about this whole video it's a good size and not at all overstuffed or empty I suppose if it were bigger that be fine too but I'm happy with it other fun moments include gliding from the top forgetting you don't have Cappy and trying to use them to get around this wall don't judge and completely accidentally throwing Cappy at these guys who deliver him to a wiggler and transport you halfway across the island and let's not forget that soundtrack especially when Mario loses Cappy I get a wonderful original trilogy Spyro the Dragon vibe from it and it suits the level quite phenomenally so that's my list honestly I could gush about Mario Odyssey all year and I probably will create some more content on it in the near future how do you feel about my ranking I anticipated severely different from the common consensus after all I'm only a Lego so what do I know so it invents me of your rankings in the comments oh and make sure to subscribe and come back for more Odyssey and of course Paper Mario content wait just a minute watch number 2 what's number two oh you mean my second favorite transformation well I'm not ranking those ah I bet I know what it is just to be a Goomba right nope goobers doesn't seem right at all well it's not a Goomba sorry [Music] well I'd better get move on he's a kind of strange fellow
