welcome back to vice grip garage today is day six of rocky mountain race week we've got el toro here in kearney nebraska we're gonna set some new records for the car today but we've got a little bit of work to do first mainly you know we've only literally got second gear seems fine nope need some others [Music] good morning john morning derek spaghetti or meatloaf meatloaf good choice what do we got going on here you've already got tools out and it's 100 degrees we're gonna just start draining some fluids and seeing how bad everything is see all the glitter parties going in there see if it's worth even putting spark plugs in it today i might just run them up huh put glue back in it and yeah got the wix racing filter out if you remember from i don't know what it was day 17 it was probably two we had quite a bit of metal in the pan it could just be new engine breaking and stuff most likely boosting rings we'll just somewhere or bearing-ish so oil is coming out filters going in we're also going to drain the transmission juice because we ran in second gear 480 miles through the mountains pretty much the entire day all day long do you think we reached 300 degrees i think you might have set a record as hot as the tunnel was it was we might have set a record on this one i'm pretty sure we set a powerglide heat record we could have cooked eggs on the transmission tunnel we've got a shifter cable that's supposed to be showing up at the motel have not seen it that's good that's good we're already supposed to be somewhere and relate once we get the juices changed then i think we'll probably just get to the track and do the rest there because we gotta figure out the shifter we've got tires the whole setup everything like that go through the front end again and all that stuff here's something pretty exciting about today along the way somewhere in the path to here we got a call from blueprint engines and they asked me if i wanted to come over with the group and take a tour of the facility it took me about .004 seconds to say yep let's go ahead and do that so we're kind of in a hurry to get stuff done john's smelling oil what have we got not bad don't smell that stick this one's not good oh yeah there's a lot of there's clutch material in there we'll ignore that for right now and just do the engine first but we're gonna hurry get this done and i'm gonna take you guys with me behind the scenes tour at blueprint it's kind of nice under here maybe we just keep making stuff up that we have to do anything come out of the filter nothing too crazy looks pretty thin it's thin but not near as glittery oh i think it's close enough ish if it spills we'll just walk away i guess we'll move the car to a different spot yeah let's start over again gotta go quick john oh there it is well we'll know in a second here well surprisingly this is actually improved john we fixed it but he fixed it just by beating on this thing like a cabin screen door yesterday and the day before and there's a little bit of shimmer in it but that's kind of typical not that a lot less than it was yeah so that's great news it's probably all went into the transmission though so we'll uh what we're doing basically is pouring the fresh oil in and then we dump the old oil into the newer jugs which are now old jugs and then we're carrying like 78 gallons of bad oil with us pretty much just in case we need the top off it's like that uh engine rebuild stuff that has a metal flake in it we're just making our own all right the moment of truth 480 miles it's still red it's second gear really weird wow it does have a little oh it is a little red wow it's like brand new it's fine we'll just put the plug back in and we'll just keep running it yesterday when the shifter linkage first broke i was down here just manually shifting this the pan was so hot it literally blistered my finger in a second and somehow i mean that's why i guess the transmission was probably 11 or million dollars yeah as they build them for abuse we might not have to tighten tighten the band at all pretty impressive what'd you say was hpl i know this is probably really hard for you guys to see but there is quite a bit of metal flake in here what we're going to do is we'll slowly drain this and then at the bottom we'll be able to see if it's clutch material or if it's aluminum or what kind of situation we got going on but the fact that it's still red means even though it got hot it wasn't overheated enough to where the oil broke down and yeah it's a little thin but it's not bad oh good because i didn't want to swap out a power glide i know how bad those bell housing bolts are i just put this transmission in a couple weeks ago well the weather man or woman said it was supposed to be 104 today and they weren't kidding so we did the right thing and spent 14 hours putting up canopy did get some juice put back into the transmission and i'm curious what it was it's just hpl stuff made right here in america i guess never heard of it until today but man if it held up to what we've put it through so far it's pretty good stuff we're gonna pull the sparklators out read on them a little bit see what we got going on we're gonna have to change our fuel table timing table the boost controller upper tables all that stuff because we're like 6 000 feet down from where we were we made a lot of modifications just so it would idle up their denver so want to read where we're at now kind of get an idea and start setting up the tune for later today what you got sir [Music] nice thanks man yes delivery kind of precision performance overnight yeah nice where it went to the track and you brought it here yeah we went to the track picked it up and we brought these questions awesome thanks man appreciate it no problem so john ripped the sparkle sparklator out real quick and you can see there the soot doesn't go all the way around the base ring which is telling us it's a little lame but that makes sense because we have it set right now to cruise at like 14 to 15. save on some fuelage does make it a titch bit hotter but are you bleeding it happens with the bigger jobs anyway we're going to put these back in and just say they're all good they should be fine i mean they only have 500 miles and five passes on them so should be fine this was painted with a brush and i'm liking it added some stickers both sides what else did we add oh back here rough country makes sense rides just like a rough country yeah yeah he's one of my favorites this is john's favorite he likes big muds and you don't lie don't look so this is the cable that needs repaired the other one somehow got stretched it's john's fault basically i think it's 100 uh it was like 397 one two shifts going through the mountains and these just aren't i mean that's not designed to daily drive and it's a really firm one two you gotta slam it uh straight cut gears and everything like that so it's stretched a little and basically when we're engaging two no matter how much we adjusted we're at the very end of the adjustment there's like one thread left we can't get it to engage second gear we were just going to run a rod through the floor but we were running so far behind that we just put in second shell went for it so i'm gonna watch john put this in i could do the bottom i'm sure but i don't know how to run that alien looking thing is that trail mix where'd we get that bottom side of the cables out john's taking this thing apart and get the cable through there [Music] at least it's not 400 degrees inside of here we'll take this shifter inside to take it apart i think we're all ready we're going to start cleaning up shifter cables in changed the routing on that a little bit bent the bracket differently and got it more flat into the transmission this is its second cable i think so i wanted to try something a little bit different yeah the other one was used that's somebody at the shops out of his race car oh okay yeah so we think we got her it feels pretty good all the fluids are ready so we'll pack up and we're gonna head over to blueprint still i think maybe we're only like three hours late and then head to the track yeah the only way to make it through you gotta rub some of these here water cubes up on the bar before you get in or you get 12 degree burns look how quick that's i mean it is hot fellers hey john we're only five hours late but we made it to blueprint right on time this facility is actually extremely bigger than i thought it would be pretty excited to get in here are we gonna try to get an engine out of here or what i don't i hope we don't need one for race week but we can try to fit it in the trailer for something else do you think they got a coyote or should we just go straight to ls i i would appreciate an ls so this is a tour before the tour we snuck in the r d room i got a 454 big block here and we're just trying to see how far we can get this thing before someone you know shuts us down we're through uh two levels so far uh oh there's a lot of people in here though looking at us weird but we'll see how far i got to put the phone down well there you go pretty nice unit successful by the way there's like 87 million blocks sitting there oh you want to do it john i think we got it was that hard wasn't too hard all right we are inside the blueprint facility and it is absolutely massive the smell in here is excellent sorry about that we're gonna go on a little bit of a tour here see how to get things done i actually have a blueprint engine sitting in a crate i haven't opened it yet it's coming soon i'm gonna see if you guys can guess what car it's for and it's gonna be it's got all the jalapenos on it extra spicy so these are cast in the usa for us in the midwest so we start with a block casting it's made the foundry comes to us about the only thing that's done to it is when it comes out of the foundry it's got flash build up on it so we they go through and kind of hit it with the grinder and knock off a bunch of excess material then once it comes to us we just make some flat spots in a few areas to make sure that when we load in their fixtures it doesn't mess with machines we got a five-off machining process when they come out of these machines the bore is about 90 percent complete the main journal's about 90 complete the deck height and all the other stuff lifter valley all of that is done so i'll show you the progression of the steps but you can see as we go through watch a step behind it as you go through and machine you can see it start to take shape the timing cover where the water pump goes the soft plugs you can see the crank mains done there cam journal's done lifter valley roller 10 bolt holes all that stuff so that happens over five operations inside that machine once it's done it goes into our machine so if you're familiar with block machining at all no what we're trying to do is to make sure that when that crank is sitting in the mains everything's lined up properly the cnc allows us to hold the tight tolerance we go through we do an inspection we make sure that it's inspect coming out of there and then we do a finished machine here on the line home we'll talk about it in our manufacturing engineering department that this machine was an old lathe base that was taken by our manufacturing engineers that put plc's wiring in it uh tooled it up and got it ready to machine blocks so now instead of having an operator standing out in a manual line holding all day we pick up a semi-finish block load it in the cradle turn on the coolant hit the button and that that mandrel will spin and the block will traverse over the mandrel and back out and that thing is finished and then when that's finished there's an inspection that's done to it to make sure that it will hold the right tolerance on fancy all these are finished here all of these are finished blocks so these they're finished through c and c operation so when they're done we'll put them through the cylinder hone we'll do we'll do the cross hatch so those are really the only two things left after you do that then we'll also put a slight chamfer there on the cylinder to help with piston install make sure we don't get anything hung up on it but beyond that that is a completed block so all these are orders ready to be assembled are ready to be assembled um and there's probably only about five days worth of blocks right here so we go through them pretty quickly it's just part of our machining process that's a lot of horsepowers john i like it it's nice to hear you guys are growing right now absolutely yeah we can't keep up and unfortunately on some of our parts right now our vendors can't keep up with us we've done a really good job of keeping the lights on and keeping everything running with with uh material supply issues but we you know we've really tried hard to make sure we keep product going out the door but uh what do you gotta do fire this up for ya [Music] 383 standard piston that goes in a lot of a lot of our motors got your wrist pin here held on by a magnet stick that in there close the door that button uh starts your mechanism going um see how you rod here this will heat it up with heat induction about 600 degrees takes about five seconds or so wow pushes that wrist pin in centers it perfectly for you that's incredible instantly instead of waiting on the little propane burner and then the slow press burning yourself and whatnot but yeah this process a lot cooler a lot easier a lot safer for us usually let them cool down it does heat up if it does get heated up it does expand so i got one cooled off already for us and then it's an auto ring machine that the engineering team came up with um basically it's easy like a nine-year-old kid came and did it basically just follow the pictures on which direction to put it in the machine and wait a second this will ring it for you yeah so we'll start on the right okay start on the right here you'll put your oil spacer on your oil rings your second and then your top ring um so we just stick it in the machine matching the pictures on what direction to put it in there's your i'm already mind blown i'll put your oil spacer on there and then it's rotated 180 so your rings aren't matching hitting your other oil ring [Music] i don't even understand what's happening right now that takes me five minutes at least and you can just go press press press press press get bloody knuckles and everything doing it the old-school way wow that's really cool and then obviously these are set up spec for whatever engine you're already pre-gap to our best specifications on which motor we build and right yep free gap from both uh so you don't have to do any any ring end gaps or nothing it's already done on certain uh motors that aren't high volume yeah we do ring gap all our rings to uh certain specs very cool yeah after the head is installed that's kind of our first chance to test the engine fully assembled and so when you're using a cast component like a cast block or a cast head you can have ferocity that you can't detect with the thing with your bare eye so what we do is we actually fill up all of the air cavity and the water cavity in there and then we pressurize it to make sure that it holds pressure pressure for a predetermined amount of time and then as he does that it's got a certain amount of time it has to hold and if it starts to drop we know we have an issue there's very rarely is it just a little drop but there's a hole you can tell and then we go through and we do a leak test on it to see where it's leaking at and if it leaks we don't use it these guys you know we put it on a build table for them so they can adjust the work height so if you think about if we built this on a conveyor when this is done the intake and everything is up quite a few more a little bit taller than that so if you're doing that on a conveyor you're up high you're working it's not really that ergonomically friendly so we like to use the build table so that way when we're doing the install you can get a pretty good handle on what's going on and you can actually see all of the different components like when you're going through and you're doing the torque on the into intake bolts you got to torque it to the right sequence you got to make sure everything is in there right you want to make sure your tool is fully seated so that the differences in work height can impact the quality so for these we thought it was important to get it lower for the operator to be able to install more stuff so you can see we've got a full exhaust system going on there water pumps coils plugs plug wires and then it's going to have a three-piece intake coming up out of it so that's an industrial it's the same thing as a 632 cubic inch engine for us a 632 the 10.3 liter application that gets a turbocharged um you know system on it so it's kicking out some serious power yeah 1800 rpms will generate 200 kilowatts electric we've started to install more add-on accessories so we'll put all the way up the transmissions on it we'll put trump drives on it um you know we're our goal is to get the customer as complete of a solution as we can so by the time they get to that point they can drop it in and start playing right away instead of having to do all the other stuff we've got good processes and capabilities that allows us to do that for the customer so when they get it they can go have some fun and then you can see that's actually a throttle body styled efi system on there we've got good success good track record of success with those and it runs pretty slick for us now you think about an individual builder putting on all of those front drives and everything if you ever buy the skits you know no two kits are really the same with how everything mounts up it takes some skill but he's actually doing a handful of them at and he's probably knocking out three or four in about the time a guy is getting one done in his garage but he's got all the experience of doing it it almost takes longer to unbox everything than it does for him to actually install it so we kind of joke about it being christmas around here you know he gets to go through and open everything up and get it sorted out are those tvf from minnesota yep [Music] good stuff sounds spicy wow 453 yeah 410 yeah 415. and 422 is about 453. wow first pull so she's gonna come around a little bit more on you wow so as you as we go through and do that dyno test that's only a part of the inspection that's done so he's going to check for blow by he's going to check it we put a die in the oil so if there's a leak our goal is to catch it on the dyno so he's got a number of inspections but every engine that we build it'll have a minimum requirement for horsepower and torque and then every engine will get a dyno sheet you can see over here on this side there's two different types of grafts that come with it there is the the chart that shows the horsepower and torque by rpm and then there's also the grass so most people it's pretty visual you can see the graph you can see what the max torque and horsepower is and then you also can get that readout so you can take a look at it and see so lots of people like you know they mainly care about the sheet that tells them how much power they're making but some guys like all the additional data one of the other things just to kind of give you an idea of all of the things that they look at you can look at all of the cylinders so if you've got a cylinder that's dead or running hot you can see that um and look at manifold pressure horsepower torque air fuel ratio he's got a black light if you want to come on in take a closer look at it jerry's checking for leaks with the dye so one of the areas you got to pay a lot of attention to would be you know here coming out of the intake to make sure that you got a good seal up here the rear main seal is really important and then we do check valve covers and stuff like that also you can also see you know some of the offerings are fully dressed including you know the plugs plug wires distributor carburetor fuel pump all of that stuff on it so again we want to sell what people want to buy our goal is we seem to have better success the more we put on the engine we get somebody they start doing it drop it in a yeah exactly you drop it in and you go and you can start having fun right away that's cool i mean you can see the different flavors pretty much right here i'm sure there's a lot more obviously but absolutely yeah if you look around the corner here you know we got a 376 ls coming around the corner too all right you probably aren't the guys to put an ls and a fox body you know i've seen done this is really cool here's where they design a lot of their stuff so is that like just what is this plastic those are all parts made out of our 3d printer 3d printer here so we'll we'll come up with a design on using solidworks it's like a 3d design software and design the part print it off we'll put this on the engine and check it for fit and function obviously you can't run the engine with that on there but you can get a pretty good idea if it will work or or not that's crazy all the way down to a block huh yep that's our new ford block that we're currently in process with just got cast last month wow you come in here and touch this and you click in like three or four or five places and then create a plane and it knows where this tip is at all times with that sensors in each one of the joints so once you measured that plane you could come down here and maybe measure this here it could tell you the angle from this plane to this snout and you go around measure all the holes and check to make sure they're right um but the really cool part about this thing it has a 3d scanner built in here so we'll just do a quick scan of it so as i scan this it's just going to pick up points on that part building on the screen it's almost like it's like witchcraft or something i don't understand what's going on it's got a laser shoots down on there they bounce back and forth in the sensor wow yeah very similar and like i said it knows exactly where that scanner is at all times because all the sensors in the arm so we're going to close it on a million points of measurement here in a second there we go i could load my 3d model that i created in solidworks i could line it up with this part using the probe and you can go through and scan it and you'll compare the two side by side and we'll give you a color map of the differences you can put a little load in here if you want alex whatever you're comfortable with this one's going to make about 25 to 2600 foot-pounds of torque at 1800 rpm called natural gas propane uh let's see got the tent up already because that's important try to get some shade here while we change the tires pretty much sounds like everybody is waiting until later tonight to take a hit because it is super hot don't know how the track's doing yet we'll walk over and try to get some idea how that's going right now we're just kind of trying to get all the tents up again and hide a little bit well you know the deal got to get the coop coppers off get these in the shade and on the car get the chute mounted back up got to change the shocks back around and we got to get into this tune and uh get that tuned up for this elevation what you got there derrick aeromotive performance you call it something like that basically i did some diagramical engineering and this doesn't get enough wind so i'm gonna take this guy and just you know help it breathe a little bit and john found a drain for a concrete sidewalks that we think is going to f150 in the left that's jacob jacob but i gotta find jack staff jimmy because this is his 20 he said so i got to get his approval don't tell doug that's gonna work for sure [Music] we got a battery we need some more horsepower this escalated oh you're too late bro wait until you see what he's about to do there's your twine for someone to take yeah come on you [Music] she's got a whistle now tell you what he's got they're getting in here waiting on john this is what i do every day i'm ready so [Music] oh okay continue it's crooked it's awesome all these metal shavings are going look at this look at that john you did a good job with the screwdriver guy atlantic good guy but we got to figure out how to how to get this i think we just got to shave these off just a hair that's going to slip right in there good call on the green it really pops up yeah better than the black for sure definitely doug are you okay with this or you just i'm supporting everything about it the green is a little uh i might just spray paint it we had an option to black black it'll probably grow on me i think it just makes a statement when it's great all right john it's him right here what do you think we're going to get for 60 foot out of that 127 today you know 127 we're going to gain quite a bit then also look departments a plus plus what do you think john looks department what do we got oh that's 10 out of 10. 10 out of 10 that's solid factory oh you're right that doesn't get maybe we get two hours now rookie rookie i came to look for you so we can get some approvals but we're out we just went forward they just announced that they're gonna put track prep down at eight o'clock it's about 6 30 now so we're gonna do the right thing and just try now we're also not going to turn it down uh we did find out though that when it cut out last night on the shift the day before or whenever it was [Music] it was a boost cut so we removed that raised the rev limiter made a couple other changes so i should have that second positive between shifts there at about 7 300 rpm so we're going to go out and just see if it sticks and if not we'll just wait until it gets some prep down and try it again so first run coming right up yeah so uh so i knew i'm like i got to get out of this we're going to break out i should have just stayed in and got the best time what's your breakdown 850. oh you you so after i let out i'm like i should have broke out and then we could have ran it tonight and yeah well it's all going to get better like you're the driving on that was perfect like it started to get the tire a little bit off the hit but you just drove through and it was perfect as a wheel speed car yeah but yeah let me see what it's 60 foot it fell yeah 131 it's the same 60 foot but this thing was excuse me all right crew chief i was an idiot and let out a thousand feet because i thought i was going to be strategic and get somewhere in an 850 but we still around what 868 and a 542 8 but you went more than a full tenth oh two tenths two times and eight faster so that thing was moving she was moving yeah i mean it's pretty similar 60 foot but between 60 your mile an hour at the eighth and the quarter was the same and you still ran 868 yeah that's where i left that out so we got the car tonight fellers this thing's going to do just fine next time i'm just going to hold it to the floor and if we break out then we'll come back and tune her down a little yeah try to get close to that 850. but man i'm telling you what i'm telling you what so it did sound different huh oh yeah it sounds weird it's crazy well it's got to be pulling better air that's cool parked a little bit the tires were clawing i could feel it kind of wiggling but i just stayed in it kept it to the firewall pinned the ears back and it didn't really swerve it just did a slight walk slow what pressure is the rear at i don't know i think we just probably leave it maybe well the track's going to get cooler though so i don't know but as far as the tune and the boost controller i think we're just going to let it sit and uh we'll chew on it again and see what happens we're going to give you the first time on this new prep what are you doing also if you have not made a pass we're going to give a little slower the sun's going down it's almost eight o'clock they just said they're gonna prep the track for 8.90 and faster so we quick hurried up got right to the front so if for some reason el toro doesn't hook which it will we'll just hot lap and come right back around john will check the tires and we'll just hit it again so no that's not how it'll go thanks and playing in tomorrow [Music] i don't know it's kind of frustrating because we hooked earlier and then they prep it and this car did not want to hook i mean i pedaled the snot out of this thing and i don't know i must have spun through what 100 foot 200 foot i mean not good but at that point i just wanted to see if the mile per hour was there so i ran her through it's 157 i think so if we can get this thing to hook i know we can put down a good time i'm packing this quick because i'm gonna go right back up yeah switch lanes see if we can get a run in well i think i won the burnout competition at least for distance i don't know how many times i've peddled it thirteen five i ran it out the back door i just wanted to see if the mile per hour was there i think it definitely is 157 we basically started at 200 foot so we packed the chute quick i'm gonna wet down my back neck get back in the staging lane and see if they'll let us rip again [Music] 8 852 chad heck yeah that was awesome oh man let's see 129.60 foot whoa 852 at 161 buddy oh man there it is that's the number we were looking for all week oh it felt good looked really good 549. slower to the eighth than the last battle on the top end is what's doing it i think dude that was a rocket i knew i knew halfway down like it even started doing this and i'm like i ain't letting out i'll rub this thing down the wall i ain't letting out oh we'll turn this thing around let's put some uh koopa cobbers on it and go have a beer yeah it's what i told uh doggy said putting her on the trailer wait we can't do that damn koopacabras and 852 at 161 miles an hour you better get ready i'm telling you that's worth the 10th i guess right yeah it is good job we're gonna pack it up we could beat on it some more try to go faster but we still got another drive to make and some more passes to make so we're gonna put the koopa coppers on it have some cold snacks hang out a little bit and maybe we'll go faster a little faster tomorrow right then we'll go faster don't you worry [Music] yeah that was uh i think he's got her in the 4w 4wd it's like wait a second he's not spinning then i realized what's going on and then you got a work truck over there with toolbox and a terpsky [Music] here we go so the truck in the right lane is the one that's leading our class right now [Music] and he just ran an 857 so tonight we actually beat him maybe unless he runs again yeah he's still going for a number if he's still making passes yeah he can't get me yeah it's shut down so we beat him messi's got like gotta slip faster but i don't know about that baby look at that beautiful tonight you can see red he's recording the tires [Music] run [Music] uh [Music] 867 and a whole bunch of water [Applause] madness has begun everyone's switching the cars over to street mode we got the trusty old kupacabras standby this is tomorrow's route john it looks like 250 miles from kearney to great bend it's a short trip tomorrow yeah that's not so bad compared to today nice yeah our checkpoints in beloit kansas sure looks like a neat building get off of there oh we got another one my bad wilson that looks pretty cool i don't know what it is largest czech egg or is it seasoned because it kazach anyway it's an egg that's what i'm saying so we'll get hustling on this we're getting pretty fast and getting this done actually hopefully by the time he gets that off and the hitch on i'll have maybe four lug nuts off so that's good and uh dog's about ready andy's about ready we're good he's got to strap the cooler down slater's getting there there's nothing good well there's oh there's one good thing yeah we got to make a stop this is not looking good it's terrible our hitch is bending off and we decided to do the right thing and just ignore it for now and we'll deal with that tomorrow maybe but otherwise yeah otherwise i think we're ready to go brother our hitch also has a cracked well your setup's nice so you don't have to like take it off for nothing you just yeah it's part of parachutes yeah that's sick i like that you gotta do something like that huh and we don't have to change right tomorrow why don't we just weld a coupler on it be done okay that's gonna do it for tonight we're all packed up we're gonna get some grub hit the motel tomorrow we have 250 or 280 miles something like that great ben kansas we're going to get a safe a2b pass we're going to turn it up even higher thanks guys for watching appreciate it very much we'll see you next time [Music] you
