reply it also says you shall know to put the lord your god to the test when the devil had finished every temptation he departed from him for a time the gospel of the lord praise to you lord jesus christ jesus was led by the spirit into the desert and was tempted my dear brothers and sisters we are now into the season of land it is important for us to realize that our life is a journey a movement towards god and prepare ourselves to receive him fully in the first reading most of speech to the israelites at the end of their 40 years wandering in the desert and he prepares them for their new life in the promised land he tells people if only they remain grateful to god if only they remain faithful to god they would be secure in the promised land and the second reading tells us that salvation is offered to all and faith in jesus and calling his name in prayer leads to salvation in today's gospel we see triumph of jesus in the desert all the temptations jesus undergoes in the desert call for the misuse of his power as messiah the son of god in fact all three temptations of jesus are all rolled into one to be unfaithful to the mission of the father to be unfaithful to the mission of the father the last sentence of today's gospel tells us the devil left him to return at the appointed time the battle with the devil was not over for jesus jesus was tempted not only said but all times for power prestige and greatness at every stage of his life he was challenged to choose the easy way he was tempted to abandon the cross abandoning the cross would mean he would become popular and famous for his name's sake a miracle on the cross would have attracted the crowds jesus chose not to abandon but to embrace the cross and he came out victorious on easter sunday for us too the battle against devil or evil never stops the most basic temptation for us is to replace god with material wealth pleasure power position and vain glory every temptation involves a choice a choice for god or a choice against god the three temptations of jesus may seem different but they are just a variation of one single temptation the temptation to declare oneself independent of god may this lenten journey help us to discover the image of god and true identity as his sons and daughters friends once there was a beggar whose only possession was a begging bowl handed down to him by his ancestors he went around with this begging bowl until a jeweler dropped a few coins in the bowl the coins made a peculiar sound and the jeweler got curious he borrowed the begging bowl and examined he cleaned it and for his surprise the begging bowl was an antique made of pure gold the real value of the ball was hidden behind the oil grim and dust often my dear brothers and sisters our true values our true identity are hidden behind our sin behind our evil tendencies behind our greed and pessimism may our lenten practices help us to discover true identity as his children and may god bless each one of us let us all stand and profess the profession of faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ even claimed lives with humility and faith we pray lord we trust in you lord we trust in you that pope francis the bishops the clergy and the religious will be constant teachers and examples of gospel faith hope and love that they witness to the great power of the divine spirit even as they encourage practical and social actions to alleviate the effects of the contagion we pray lord we trust in you
