glory and all the angels with him he will sit upon his glorious throne and all the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate them from one another as a shepherd separates the ship from the goats he will place the ship on his right and the goats on his left then the king will say to those on his right come you who are blessed by my father inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world for i was hungry and you gave me food i was thirsty and you gave me a drink a stranger and you welcomed me naked and you closed me ill and you cared for me in prison and you visited me then the righteous will answer him and say lord when did we see you hungry and feed you or thirsty and give you drink when did we see you a stranger and welcomed you or naked and clothed you when did we see you ill or imprison and visit you and the king will say to them in reply amen i say to you whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine you did it for me depart from me community to be holy for god is holy the request affirms the revelation put forth and genesis that we are made in the image and likeness of the holy one the passage from leviticus as a bare-bones sketch of the goodness we are called to reflect do not steal do not lie or speak falsely do not defraud or withhold wages or put stumbling blocks in the way of the blind do not act dishonestly and rendering judgment do not bear hatred in other words love your neighbor as yourself today in the gospel reading we find jesus telling us that nothing that allows us to slide out is our discomfort as a matter of fact these are perhaps the most challenging words in all of the scriptures whatever we do or fail to do to our neighbors and jesus has made it quite clear who is our neighbor we have done or failed to do to that neighbor for the hebrews who had experienced the anguish of slavery and exile holiness had to do with separation adherence to sacred law assured that they would not be absorbed into a foreign culture a legitimate fear for them as a people the law for them was quite functional in preserving their jewish identity this particular worldview or this particular attitude jesus turns this upside down rather than remove himself from sinners he joins with them in love for jesus holiness is about connection not separation holiness is about putting aside the fear of our alienation and annihilation while trusting in love to heal every brokenness once again we are reminded that whoever would save his life will lose it while whoever loses his life for christ's sake will save it god bless us all we now live to the lord all the concerns of our hearts merciful and compassionate father in the name of jesus who rose victorious from sin and death we come to you in this time of the covet 19 virus that has disturbed and even claimed lives with humility and faith we pray lord we trust in you lord we trust in you that pope francis the bishops the clergy and the solidarity and by their conscience in their task to find cures for the infected and ways to stop the transmission of the virus with vaccines and with every possible means available we pray lord we trust in you that government officials and agencies in charge of general welfare and of peace and order be motivated by true love of all that they always give this interested service due to all especially for the poor who are greatly disadvantaged we pray lord we trust in you that the sick and their families find the value of family love that supports and heals and the importance of sincere continuing prayer that bears fruit not just in healing but in the conversion of hearts and minds we pray lord we trust in you that owners of business goods and services and economic managers balance their money making with greater efforts to help their community we pray lord leaders that help frontliners peace and order frontliners and other basic service frontliners be sustained in their health in their family needs and in their moral and spiritual strengths we pray lord we trust in you that the dead find eternal rest that their grieving families find so lays in prayer and in loving and caring for one another we pray lord we trust in you that those who are healthy may not just be indifferent but be constant in interceding for all and in sharing their time talent and treasure to sustain community and church services we pray lord we trust let us pause for a while for our personal and community concerns we pray lord we trust in you father we know nothing is impossible with you
