I have in front of me a finished disappearing nine-patch block and if you've ever done a disappearing block before this is probably the one you've tried it's the most basic one out there but if you haven't done one before get ready to be really excited because you won't believe that this came from nine charms and turns into this super complicated magical looking block so I have all these beautiful fabrics and I want to show you how I put this together I'm going to start with nine charms I've got four low-volume fabrics and five fabrics that are more saturated in color because I'm looking for things that have some contrast and when I lay the black out I want to lay it out so that I see the color is alternating so I'm going to start by just pulling through my fabrics seeing which ones I think look the best next to each other and one thing to notice as you go through this is that the fabrics that are going to be in your outside corners are not going to get chopped up so if you have some really favorite charms that you think look better unchopped or ones that are a large scale you're going to want to put those on the outside but pay close attention to that middle block because the middle block is the one that's going to get chopped up so when I'm looking for a fabric for my middle block I tend to look for something that's really strong in color something that's going to play well chopped into four pieces and something that's a small enough scale that I'm not going to mind chopping up and spreading it out and once you like how it looks I really like this one I like how the fabrics are playing off of each other here I like that I've got a strong Navy in the middle that will cut up well and be strong in my finished block one more thing to keep in mind before we start sewing is to look at the size of your blocks remember that we talked about from manufacturer to manufacturer that they might not be exactly the same size not everybody makes 5 inches 5 inches so go ahead and trim these up to be the same size if that is uncomfortable for you if they're not quite matching up the ones that I have here I'm pretty happy with how they're look so I'm ready to get selling so I have in front of me my 9 patch block and I've gone ahead and already sown the first charms together and I've shown them in rows so you can see here my 3 rows and I had them chain pieced but that's not something that you feel that you need to do I just like to do it in order to help keep my rows in order and I did want to show you that I have gone ahead and on the back the way I'm pressing these as I'm pressing alternate scenes so that when I go to nest them together I'll be able to do that really easily and I nest them so that I reduce the bulk and you'll also notice that I'm using some really lovely red thread this is not typically the color I would use if I was working with these particular fabrics but I'm doing that so that you can see what I'm doing and I'll be doing that for the rest of the cloth so the way I want to finish sewing this block together is now that I have my rows I'm going to sew them to each other so I'm going to start with the top in the middle I'm going to put right sides together and you can pin feel free to pin I'm a big fan of pins I don't find that I need to do it because I'm nesting my seam so I'm going to hold that and I hold my top edge together and that's really all I hold when I take it to the machine and then I'm just going to sew always fun to get started with different machines so I'm just going to get this going and the one thing that I look out for as I'm sewing is to make sure that as those seams come together that I'm not flipping my seam allowances and of course we've all done it we've all been there so no big deal if it happens just rip it out or just press it out whatever works the best for you I'm going to cut that one and have nice fancy buttons it's really fun so you can see already that I've got my points match up really beautifully because I went ahead and nested those team so it's one of those great tips so I'm going to go ahead now and sew the bottom to the middle and I do the same thing I just hold on to that top that's what I use to put it under the foot and again as I come up on this where the seams meet I just make sure so I'm going to check that one was flipped that my seams aren't flipping and I also always check this bottom fabric because sometimes that gets away for me too so you can pin that if you want that'll help a lot but it goes pretty quickly it's just a three blocks so I have that done and you can see what the finished nine patch looks like and then I would go ahead and I would press at this point I would press all of my seams in one direction I would just finish it up that way so now the real magic is going to happen so I have my block all sewn together this nine patch and I'm ready to start cutting it apart and do the really fun stuff let me just remind you I'm working with a standard rotary cutter I have a ruler an acrylic ruler that's long enough to go across the block that I'm using currently and again I'm using that rotating mat but you can use whatever mat you feel most comfortable with I've gone ahead and lined up my block so that it's centered on the mat and this time we're going right back to that original cutting that I talked about and we're just cutting right through the center in both directions so this mat is great because it tells me my centerline so I love that I'm going to cut right through the center pick up my mat so I don't disturb my block and I keep it as straight as possible in fact that bumped a little so I might even shove it back together and then go ahead and do my second cut then we get to have fun so here you go you have four pieces you started with nine and nine fat four but these are really complicated for that you wouldn't have wanted to sew together with all those little pieces and already you can see that it's going to be really fun we can start turning things around I could turn all of my blocks maybe you put all those big charms matching in the center and you get a great cornerstone going that's a great look I tend to end up flipping one to the center because I usually like seeing how the diagonal start connecting so I think the way that I ended up laying it out it's just up to you you can move them around now that you've got four squares they really can be in any orientation that you'd like but just to show you I ended up really liking this one because I like how these two patterns come together they way they meet and then keeping leave one separate and we have this great Navy diagonal so let me go ahead and show you what it looks like all sewn together because that's just a basic four patch you can sew that together so we take it and then here we have again that finished disappearing nine-patch block and you would never believe you had started with nine charms and what's really great is when we see it and repeat and when you see it in repeat one of the things that I love is that I love that we can still see the charms that I didn't cut up how they're really dominant and they are all over the quilt and in contrast that Navy fabric that got caught up in his so tiny and the movement it out to the quilt but because it's Navy it has a really strong sense to it and it really holds its own so I really love that about that quilt you you
