QUILT AS YOU GO WITH 2.5 INCH STRIPS (Jelly Rolls): Part 1

cool as you go with strips the possibilities are endless let me give you some ideas welcome to how to quilt as you go with strips part one when most critters see this they automatically think of a jelly roll the term jelly roll was invented and trademarked by motor fabrics but other fabric companies also package their fabrics like this with a range of 40 pre-cut two and a half inch wide strips that are the width of the fabric which is normally 42 inches pre-cuts are great because you get such a large variety of fabrics but you can always just cut two and a half inch strips from your stash so today's video is part one in this video i'm going to show you how to sew quilted to go long strips how to keep those strips straight and then how to personalize your quilt by adding a row of applique such as pretty flowers or for those that like the beach shells if you're interested both of these quilts are in my first e-book called quilted to go the moonshine way the instructions include three sizes and it's available to purchase as a pdf download from our website so let's get started you can make your quilt any size you like my backing panels are cut 13 inches wide and 42 inches long so that's the width of the fabric the other good thing about 13 inches is that i know if i had to cut my panels down the length of the fabric i would easily be able to get three 13 inch panels across the width of the fabric i'm going to join my quilt together using my easy cover strip method so my batting is cut the same length which is 42 inches but it's actually half an inch smaller on each long edge of my backing panel now you can use fusible batting if you like i'm just using cotton batting with a scrim and i've actually already held my layers together with just a light application of basting spray cut your two and a half inch strips into 13 inch pieces you'll be able to get three 13 inch pieces out of each jelly roll to make cutting a little bit quicker you can stack maybe three jelly rolls on top of each other they're already folders so that will actually be six layers and on your cutting mat mark with masking tape 13 inches and then you can easily and quickly cut your pieces to cut the third piece put all your folded edges together and measure six and a half inches from the folded edge and cut and that will give you your third piece from the strip at the sewing machine i've threaded up with a neutral color thread so something that's going to tie in with your backing fabric because you are going to see that thread i have a size 80 quilting needle on my stitch length is set at 3 and i have my walking foot on so i have my walking foot on but i do want to have a quarter inch seam so you need to be able to judge a quarter inch seam so you will need to either be able to move your needle position over to the right hand side or find a guide on your foot which gives you a distance from the guide to the needle which is a quarter of an inch arrange your fabrics in an order that you find pleasing and before we start to sew we're going to mark lines onto our batting so that we can ensure that our strips are going to be sewn on nice and straight so your first line is marked two and a half inches from the top edge and then we're going to continue marking lines at a space two inches apart a really great way to make sure that your lines are going to be accurate is to sit your piece on your cutting mat and i have my backing fabric running along a straight line and then i'm going to just connect my two inch lines from the top edge down to the bottom edge before you start to sew roll your batting and backing panel up on the right hand side and that's going to just fit easily inside the c-section of your sewing machine and we're going to start with our first strip facing with the right side facing up just on the top edge of the panel making sure that it is level with our marked two and a half inch line and then take your next strip and put it with the right side facing down once again making sure that everything is nice and level with our marked line and away we go flip your top strip over so that it meets your pencil line or your marked line and press now if your strip doesn't meet that marked line it will mean that your seam allowance is either too big or too small so you will just need to adjust that and adjust before you begin sewing the rest of them on continue sewing the strips on pressing after each strip and making sure that it meets your marked line now if you do feel more comfortable you can pin your strips on before you sew [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] and here's my strippy panel with my strip sewn on nice and straight and even now you can see why this is important when you're making a quilt you want your strips to be level from row to row now to personalize the quilt if you're making a gift for someone make it in their favorite colors and choose an applique design that aligns with their hobbies or interests say for instance like fish shoes purses even use letters to make a quote today i'm going to use butterflies for the applique panels i've cut strips that are seven and a half inches wide my backing fabric is the same and my batting is cut half an inch smaller on the long edges just to reduce the bulk in our seam they're also the same length as my stripy panels now if you wanted to apply your applique shapes and just zigzag or blanket stitch them on you would do that on a separate layer first of all just on your background fabric i'm actually going to cut out one step and i'm going to applique and quilt at the same time so i have held my layers together with some basting spray before i add the applique i am going to quilt my layers first of all and i'm going to do this with some twisty quilting so before i do that what i've done is i have marked a line in the center and then i've marked a line either side which is two inches apart just using a fabric marker that can be easily erased from the fabric to sew the twisty quilting i'm just going to sew gentle wavy lines sewing across my straight lines finish at the bottom edge and then start again at the top the twisty quilting lines help to hold my panels nice and straight and stable while i apply my applique shapes and stitch them on with sketchy applique [Music] at the sewing machine i have a nice hot pink thread i have a size 80 quilting needle on my free motion stipple foot and i have dropped the feed dogs and so i'm just going to go ahead and sketch the applique around the edge of my butterfly shapes i have a detailed tutorial on sketchy applique and i'll put a link in the description ah scratch that that thread kept breaking all the time so sometimes this happens i did everything i changed the needle i loosened up the tension i changed my bobbin thread and it just kept breaking so i've now changed my thread to a nice bright variegated thread and it's working beautifully so sometimes just changing the thread is the answer [Music] [Music] this is what it looks like from the front and this is what it looks like from the back now not everybody likes free motion sewing so you could always just apply your applique shapes onto your top layer first of all applique the shapes and then put the layers together for quilting i'm now going to join my two panels together using my easy cover strip method i do have a detailed tutorial on that i'll put the link in the description but here's a quick demo the cover strip is a two inch strip made up with a one inch bias tape maker i iron strips of fusible web tape onto the back of the strip double check that your panels are the same length before you go to join them together next step is to join the pieces together with the backs facing taking a 3 8 of an inch seam allowance so this is where my secret weapon big ironing board comes in handy i can lay my joined sections out nice and flat and press the seam open easily mark a line that's half an inch away from the center of the seam just on one side peel away the paper backing from the cover strip leaving the fusible web of glue position the cover strip so that one side aligns with your marked line and iron in place now stitch down both long sides of the tram sewing nice and close to the edge [Music] this is what my quilt looks like from the front and this is what it looks like from the back now there's always more than one way to do something so if you wanted to join your quilted sections together using the joining strip method you would cut your batting so that all edges are
