foreign suggested a movie this much in my life but okay guys it's that video I'm gonna check out Puss in Boots 2 The Last Wish I'm sorry I'm so late to this I started working on that Big video and then I had a plan to switch it up and do live action movies but then I was like dang I don't know what video to make and I just hit this creative stump where I wanted to try and switch up my content for more variety but I also wanted to just do another video on anime and movies because I'm always interested in anime movies I'm obsessed with them there isn't a month that goes by where I don't re-watch The Lego Movie or coco they are Hoodwinked and another reason this video took so long for me to make is because I didn't want to make a video on this movie if I didn't have anything to add on there's already been a million video essays where people say exactly what I think people have dived into the anxiety portions which is really cool the villains people have dived into these spectacular animation obviously a video about it this movie has reached all of the internet and I'm so excited about that even more excited because it's DreamWorks who have been kind of the underdog throughout these last few years in animated movies not in terms of sales obviously boss baby 2 did pretty well for the pandemic a little too well if you asked me but in terms of quality they were kind of going downhill but recently they have really gotten that back bad guys was a super simple movie but this was a stepping stone into their next Golden Age which we're gonna get also more Furry Movies is just what I need zootopia 2 Guys zootopia 2 and put some Last Wish has really certified that this is going to be their next big decade you're telling me we're gonna get a Kung Fu Panda 4 and possibly Shrek 5 from probably the same people who worked on Puss in Boots too imagine how cool the fight scenes in the next Kung Fu Panda will be if it looks anything like this okay guys I need to calm down I am way too excited in this video now I did actually have some topics I wanted to explore in this video that I do feel is different from what I've seen specifically the horror elements in this movie because it is something that I feel is so underutilized in the animation medium and it's something I really want to see more of specifically horror has so much unused potential in the animated movie world and it sucks that it's kind of been less done because anime movies have been so closely regulated to appeal to wide audiences and having a character die in a bloody fight scene might look cool to me but probably not kids going in to see the next Disney movie so horror animation has been mostly tied to video games Five Nights at Freddy's undertale bendy and the ink machine the millions of others that are coming out that I don't really like but I guess they're horror we've also also seen it done quite a bit in stop motion with ParaNorman Nightmare Before Christmas Coraline I also think that stop motion works with horror so well because stop-motion puppets have always given at least to me this already Eerie Vibe and we have yet to get full out scary scenes and Anime movies until now which I'm going to get into soon obvious obvious that's not to say that we haven't gotten in 10 scenes and Anime and movies before because oh my god do my hands get sweaty every time I watch Toy Story 3. that movie is terrifying and it works just as well as Puss in Boots too in terms of your intention I really think if Pixar sat down and created solely a horror movie and animation it would be the coolest thing ever if DreamWorks actually picked up the Plants vs Zombies movie they could have definitely added some horror elements but enough about other movies let's get into why I think Puss in Boots 2 does such a great job with animated fear tension and Horror the movie starts off with this exciting build of Puss in Boots in his prime he's dancing we got kids cheering him on this kid sounds weirdly like that new Pinocchio to me anytime I hear a kid voice actor now I just think Del Toro spinocchio instantly I don't know why [Music] but this introduction serves as an overly optimistic foreshadowing to Rock Bottom a cliche that's been done so perfectly in DreamWorks movies and it serves such a purpose here to show that Puss in Boots has won so many of his battles he has started to accept himself as practically God and that only means one thing you're about to get hunted down by the coolest most badass villain to ever be on screen puss has become the biggest jerk and life is going to give him his helping this is a BoJack Horseman situation and everything comes crashing down when Puss and Boots gets crushed by a bell and after a doctor's visit he needs to retire from living life on the edge a parkourist's worst nightmare the whole nine lives a bit definitely felt like a very easy plotline that was expected but boy does DreamWorks make it fun and it builds on his character so much I can't tell you how much I love the sequence of Puss and Boots just doing the most random dangerous stunts it's so creative I can tell it's probably the animator's favorite scene to get to animate after this all happens we get one of the greatest character villain introductions in all of Cinema I'm not even joking the introduction to the wolf later revealed as death as some of the greatest pacing I've ever seen because it continues on puss being this egotistical not interested in anyone but himself person and then all of that comes to a pit stop and puts his entire mood changes the switch up of death pretending to be a fan and wanting puss's autograph to then death pointing to the word dead actually made me gasp I don't think I've ever done that in a movie theater it was time so well the pacing made me Double Take I think this entire sequence is the greatest start to enact one I've ever seen and it was the movie's moment I got to lay back and be like yeah I'm gonna be all into this the intense relatable fear of puss is so unexpected of him and broke this entire Persona made up by him in a matter of seconds the shadow appearing under the door the slight whistle that we hear when puss is hiding and it's so clear that they didn't hold back and they really got to experiment with how far they can take animation when it comes to a scene that needs tension like compare this scene with a villain introduction in like a Hotel Transylvania movie or the minions also the coloring and composition of the scene and everything else in this movie has such an enhancement to the fear that Puss in Boots has it looks so cool in theaters when everything went red it looked like a really good video game cut scene to me I just have to give this whole scene a 10 out of 10. it's also even better that they kept this strong character opening and was able to make him just as cool as for the rest of the movie's run time you know a villain is awesome when the audience wants way more of them singpos actually give up after this and accept fate was super heartbreaking and something I did not expect them to go full on with and seeing him backtrack as he buries his old self is even more hard-shattering I was tearing up the entire time but I'm glad they chose to go full out with him giving up because I loved puss just being a cat it was comedy gold him just standing there peeing is amazing and then they top this whole sequence with huge action moments after as they try to seal the map to The Last Wish just every scene gets better than the last next we got the introduction to Jack Horner which takes on a more silly approach compared to the wolf and I feel like people on the internet have high them up just as much a little too much don't search his name on rules I wouldn't say he's personally my favorite character just because it's hard to take him seriously which is obviously the point of his character that's what they intended but it's not my cup of tea something about his face makes me feel gross he looks like if baloney was a person I'm not gonna elaborate I do however love how they did not make him care in the slightest he is just the most stereotypical true evil spoiled leader and that just becomes the joke of his character so it's hard to hate him as a character when even he knows he's a bad person what took you so long idiot and John Mulaney put his whole heart into every delivery of every line they also brought Jiminy Cricket which is the second time in 2022 we got to see him Puss in Boots 2 obviously does it better and like I stated in my last video DreamWorks knows how to make small very stylistically pleasing characters I really love this guy's design so much I just feel like he clashes so well with every background in this movie this movie goes above and beyond with the fairy tale ideas I actually found myself watching this whole sequence and being like yeah I get that reference and the reference is like a 100 year old poem this movie gives them actual personalities Beyond just being like Goldilocks don't even get me started on her she is definitely one of those characters who is mean but not mean at the same time I can't explain it I really enjoyed this whole group I love how this movie is so confident with everything going on that it doesn't try to over explain anything which is a huge pet peeve of mine in movies definitely animated ones and it's obviously all about balance I don't need to know the logistics of everything in a movie a better story is told when we start to realize what's happening as we go along and we as viewers can connect the dots on our own but same can be said for under explaining you don't want to make your viewers have to read your mind on what you mean that's also a huge pet peep of mine in stories movies and TV shows will sometimes just skip over things because they know if they dive deep they'll realize it doesn't work in the universe so they just kind of ignore aspects even if they don't work but Puss in Boots too out of all movies and medium has managed to fit the perfect balance and when they do over explain that's usually the joke I'm deaf trade up the whistle I just gotta talk about the whistle it is my favorite part about this movie it's such a distinct sound that whoever came up with that specific whistle needs an Oscar right now I want to best whistle Oscar just for this occasion it kind of reminded me of the shark sound in Jaws I think I love the concept of the scary whistle so much because when I was 10 I actually read a story on like Reddit about a guy that had a weird whistle follow him throughout his years and something about that was such a scary cool concept to me I was terrified back then worried I was gonna hear a whistle that's genuinely a true story I'm not making that up for this video it is the concept of fear of the unknown in audio form and the fact they tied it with a character just makes it even cooler because you instantly know who it is when that noise is there and as it gets closer we as an audience are even more terrified for when he's going to actually appear put that with the flare of Puss in Boots fur and you got a perfect capsulated idea of horror intention and anxiety in such a simple way I love it I also love how unlike a lot of anime and movies this movie treats its audience with respect and doesn't try to make anything too cutesy for the sake of kids being able to replay it like it's Coco melon they don't hold back for anybody when I first saw this shot of blood trickling down Puss in Boots head I've looked over to my family like what am I watching this is Puss in Boots right am I did we go into the wrong movie there's a full panic attack scene which is so good and it's so unexpected for what most people would assume is a kids movie and during this moment puss doesn't have some crazy monologue where he says his truth he just sits there Breathing heavily and tries to calm himself and the entire scene is silent and so realistic and it was even more perfect of a moment because earlier in this film perito had already told puss he was a calming dog but puss was like yeah okay and that basically foreshadowed burrito calming him and puss realizing he actually loves this little guy after watching this movie it is impossible to watch the first one with a straight face imagine being the animator who only worked on the first one and having to see the second movie even QT characters like burrito still get their sad moments I made the biggest mistake of rolling my eyes when I first saw burrito in the theater not another comic relief character God dang it this movie was going so well because I was so wrong I judged a book by its cover I ended up loving this little guy every line of his is comedy gold and I even ended up watching this movie a second time just because burrito's movements was so addicting to watch knuckle dragging honey scrounging grub oh fish ing nugget and you're snooter burrito serves a purpose in showing the optimistic view of situations compared to Soft Paws and Puss in Boots Because deep down burrito had just as much of a sad life if not a sadder one than all of these other characters but he's gotten along so well in life because he doesn't feel sorry for himself even when he's been rejected from society he still sees the good and therefore he ends up manifesting that good into reality Puss in Boots and softpaws didn't have this evil World when they used the map because of their hardships it's because the scenery of their past was a reflection of their Outlook and perception of reality which is why purito would have to go through the pocket of posies and Puss in Boots would have to go through Bowser's Kingdom because they already had this perceived notion that they were gonna have to fight something it ended up manifesting and making their Journey way harder than peritos who had walked into it with a clear mind and therefore was rewarded with the smell of flowers oh thank you or maybe that's just what I took from it maybe I'm making this way deeper than it is the first time I realized DreamWorks had a talent in making you feel fear was the scene and Rise of the Guardians where Jack falls into the ice saving his sister for some reason when I was like eight I would just re-watch this scene over again I actually had dreams about it it was just injected into my brain and watching it now being 17 I think it looked way cooler to me when I was younger but DreamWorks killed it with making my palm sweaty when Jack walks on the ice and I really love when a movie can make me feel that way it just makes me hooked and even more entertained and I think the real point of this video is to really emphasize the power animation holds like it has the bonus of you getting to create whatever you want in the exact look you want whereas live action can only work in the style of the real world a tree is going to look like a tree you see every day but in animation a tree can have cool gradients amazing green colors clashing with a bluish Shadow you can give it eyes if you want I don't know and that's not to put down live action because live action can have just as much color and beautiful scenes but I think animation just has a tad bit more personality in my opinion and I really think big animated projects have the potential to use this and make some really cool scenes and connect with the audience whether that's an actual animated horror movie or a movie like spider-verse where it has deeper arcs some of my favorite scenes and Pixar movies are the ones that I hate because they're so sad but I love that I'm feeling sad for these non-existent characters that is hard work paying off I hope I can do that one day even when Puss in Boots 2 offers the most to its audience it still does the work of making you feel interested Beyond wow this wolf is scary you should be scared it manages this mix of entertainment and also tension in a way where it doesn't feel too random when something big happens because a movie can't just be a ton of cooler like I stated horror elements just randomly thrown together that doesn't work it only works if you have all this other stuff that makes us like this movie this movie throws whatever it can to the wall to make this movie appeal to more than just being a tale of a hero overcoming fear it actually does the job of making everything entertaining and the character is then able to reflect on his path and connect with us this whole sequence was so creative and then the wolf knocking them down to show that they're gone is even cooler oh yeah let's get into the ending this movie geniusly decides to not have death die at the end of their fight sequence which is the best way to go because that would defeat the entire purpose of his character but that fight sequence I kinda was going on the notion he was going to get defeated for some reason and thankfully they didn't choose that route or I would have been pissed except for Jack Horner he dies death doesn't die because he's deaf obviously he isn't something that can be erased no matter what everybody will experience him in one way or another maybe he has different forms for each person he is a manifestation of something that will eventually get Puss in Boots when it's time so instead we get this amazing Forfeit of his character because he realizes that plus is no longer running from the problem shadowing him so it builds this realization of how the life he has is so precious and such a less cliche way also the flashback scenes are so greatly executed and they reveal the love plus is hiding so well the flashbacks focus more on his friends than him showing this character development and the ego leaving his body I did at first feel the end was a little anticlimactic with them not getting the wish and I think that's just because their whole mission was about it so at first it's kind of hard to take in that they're just okay with not getting their wish but unlike Lightyear with just them accepting they should stay on this planet that they're on I feel this movie has that world and character building that it actually works for me Goldilocks accepting her family as they are was so beautiful I cried and everything scary in this movie drifts away at the end and we get to remember how perfect this movie is not just the focus of this video which is the dark elements to this movie because none of that would work if we didn't get such great characters and Great Character scenes it wouldn't have been as scary if Puss in Boots wasn't so Fearless in the beginning it wouldn't have worked without perito calming puss down everything just comes together to make everything else work the movie's fear and tension is built solely on these characters and their own fears in life making it so much more personal it doesn't bring on this random villain and expect us to care about it right off the bat it brings on this villain who has the most distinct characteristic and importance in puss's life and it's perfectly animated horror that I want to see more of maybe they can go even scarier either way I would love it the movie truly ends with a fun scene of them becoming Sailors I'm digging the Beards they all look so fashionable and then we get the most exciting setup to another Shrek movie or at least I hope that's what this means my mom looked over to me and whispered does that mean Shrek my mom's not even that huge on the Shrek franchise that's how good this ending was I don't know how exactly to end this video but I think recently in animation a lot of the general public is starting to realize how how much importance and potential the animation medium has and to see this crazy Improvement of anime and movies has been so cool we've gotten deeper stories characters are having some actual Stakes that we can care about and although I will always appreciate just a simple fun animated movie I think Puss in Boots 2 is able to capture that you can do both of that in a perfectly balanced way you can make a movie that can appeal to not only people who want a simple character-driven story but also people who want a deep interesting physiological message and they can tie together in a perfect knot yeah I think that's good for an ending to this video I feel like I'm giving a speech I hope you guys enjoyed this video I wasn't able to get too deep into the soundtrack because this video was already getting too drawn out but I want everyone to know in case it's asks that yes I love Fearless hero I bang my head every time I listen to that song I really really like the guitar bass songs in the soundtrack especially in the flashback scene at the end so good lots of stuff are coming now that I'm getting back into the groove of making YouTube videos uh I guess another update for you guys is that I just turned 17 so that's pretty cool I'll be a 18 in one year yay literally nothing will change I don't feel 17 let alone 18 so I'll just be like Yay I'm 18 and go back to watching The Lego Movie stay awesome
