[Music] let's begin our study proverbs chapter 14 now begin with verse 1 because I like to just beat up on the women and it sure feels that way sometimes doesn't it but you know Solomon its blame him anyway verse 1 the wise woman builds her house but the foolish pulls it down with her hands all right here we go I love you ladies somebody once said he speaks of the woman because the women especially in those times were often the one who managed the husband's financial business and so that's what introduces us that thought introduces us to the verse because he's speaking concerning a woman and she's one who builds her home I realized that with the advent of of women's groups and all in the 20th century into the 21st but that for some women the idea of being a woman who builds a home is actually not honored anymore to be a homemaker is not is not honored but here Solomon is referring to the woman as a home maker and it's obviously something that he places in highest value because making a house into a home is difficult and in many ways today is devalued somewhere along the line being a loving wife and a good mother homeless became shameful for many generations such a life was not only valued but was greatly desired and to this day many women would prefer caring for their homes and for their children and obviously the Bible places homemaking in an elevated place and this is true and because it is Solomon says it takes wisdom to build a house and when he says every Wise Woman builds the word build means to establish every wise woman establishes it speaks of causing something to continue he's saying to build a house or to establish a family is a work that continues now how does a wise woman build her home well by using wisdom with finances by caring for and influencing any children they might have to know the Lord by keeping the home orderly not allowing the children to run crazy and Solomon makes it clear that it is wisdom that enables a household to thrive now the Apostle Paul in the New Testament wrote concerning this kind of thing when he was instructing a pastor by the name of Titus it's found in Titus chapter 2 you might want to turn your Bibles with me for a moment and go to Titus chapter 2 verses 4 and 5 and you're saying it took me a long time to find proverbs now you want know Titus chapter 2 verses 4 and 5 in Titus chapter 2 verses 4 and 5 Paul is giving instructions to Titus Titus as a pastor it's similar book to 1st and 2nd Timothy in that Paul is writing to a pastor by the name of Titus and he's given him similar kinds of instructions and he's speaking concerning ministry in the church and women in general as he's speaking here in Titus chapter 2 and he says in verse 4 that they speaking of the older women that they had Mohnish the young women to love their husbands to love their children to be discreet chaste homemakers good obedient their own husband's that the Word of God may not be blasphemed to be instructors to the younger and he speaks about the things that the older women are to be teaching the younger women it seems that simple home duties actually honor God and it seems that home building is an honorable calling and so what makes a woman a wise wife and how does a woman build her home well one when you look at Titus chapter 2 a wise woman loves her husband secondly a wise woman loves her children and to me it just I'll just stop in that for a moment a wise woman loves her children older well how does an older woman teach a younger woman to love her children I remember when we had our first and Marie was a nursing mama and you know she'd never had a child before I didn't know anything about it you may have an instinct to do so maybe within you to do so but it was sure blessing for us to have an older woman whom we knew that Marie could go to and speak to and ask questions to and she did because there were things that that this woman helped Marie to understand she was an older woman she had nursed children she understood things as a husband what do I have to say what can I say nothing and so she spoke to a woman who was able to instruct her who told her about things that that babies do and don't do when they're nursing things that we men wouldn't know anything about but that's what they do they instruct him in a variety of things older women have the experience to do that and they help and so so how is it that a woman builds her home well one she loves her husband but two she she also loves her children three he says that she is discrete when he says this woman is a godly woman and all the word discreet means to be careful to be careful in what is said and to be careful in how they live it speaks about proper behavior the older women teach younger women to be godly the godly young woman loves her husband loves her children is careful what she says and she does a fourth thing is she's chaste and that doesn't mean he runs around the house after her the word chaste means pure in thought and pure e'en in behavior and modest she's a woman who isn't going to draw attention in any way that would dishonor the Lord and then that includes the way that she's dressing she doesn't get caught up with extreme forms of current fashion she doesn't draw attention to herself in a way that isn't proper an older woman can help a younger woman to understand that he says she's also a homemaker that means she cares for the home she takes care of household affairs and she's a woman who isn't neglecting her family a sixth thing he says it's the woman a wise woman is good that word good speaks of being excellent it be it speaks up being honorable she's upright and she's obedient a seven thing to her husband she submits in other words properly and these are the things that he says are the fruit of of being a godly woman and the thing that stands out is verse five in Titus have you turned there with me because the fruit of that is she says the Word of God may not be blasphemed and in other words ladies your lives bring glory to God and because your lives bring glory to God your life does not lend itself to remarks about the ineffectiveness of the Christian life because there are those who will say and you know this they'll say well that person claims to be a Christian but they're no different than me they're just as bad as I am what makes them any different well he says that when they live in this way the Word of God is not blaspheme and so a godly woman is a woman who actually builds her home so back in proverbs 14 he says the wise woman builds her house but he goes on to say in contrast the foolish pulls it down with her hands the foolish one pulls it down instead of bringing on her she destroys her own home instead of being someone who's careful for the things of the Lord she actually destroys it herself verse two he who walks in his uprightness fears the Lord but he who was perverse in his ways despises him so this is a contrast the contrast is between fear and contempt the fear of the Lord produces moral uprightness but contempt produces a crooked life verse 3 in the mouth of a fool as a rod of pride but the lips of the wise will preserve them flippant disrespect is what he's speaking about and sarcasm has a way of getting you into trouble and it surely does you know sometimes when little boys are growing up they begin to think that because they're getting bigger and getting stronger that they can show disrespect sometimes to their mom I remember my son I walked in he didn't know I was walking in one of my son's I'll leave David unnamed and he was in his early teens and I came walking into the house and he didn't know I was walking into the house and I was walking right to where he and his mom were and he was saying something to Marie Marie I apparently had told him to do something and he said and I happened to walk in right when he was saying I won't do it if I don't want to woo but I walked in right when he said if I don't want to and he saw me and then he but I want to forget that I said you better want to you know flippancy gets you in trouble having an arrogant attitude a prideful response this being a smart person a smart mouth it's going to get you in trouble it does be careful how you speak in the things that you say it's what are you saying because sarcasm has away getting you in problems verse four where no oxen are the trough is clean but much increase comes by the strength of an ox well an an ox is there trading out the grain right and the grain feeds that ox and so this is intertwined but the fact is is the oxen is working he's making a mess but life is filled with messes life is messy in many ways and so life in general is not to be seen as something that is just you know filled with trouble when it comes to ministry we've used this scripture in ministry along for a long time because you know you when you have children in a classroom the children you know in that classroom they're busy and there were times when we didn't have many classrooms and so the children's ministers whom we care for obviously we're getting a bit frustrated because it was difficult because there were a lot of kids in one small room and we went to this scripture where it says we're no oxen are the trough is clean if there are no children in the room it'll stay clean all the time I would rather have it messy with kids than to be straight straightened up with nobody there and so you see the value of that and so it just makes sense for us we would rather have messy rooms because of many kid kids then to clean to have clean rooms with no kids and so fact is is when you're busy this couldn't be a mess bottom line we know that verse 5 a faithful witness does not lie but a false witness will utter lies a faithful witness by the way this this could be spoken of in terms of being in a court and being a witness that is giving a testimony and what's interesting is this as a faithful witness doesn't lie false witnesses do a testimony is more apt to be true if the person testifying fears God in his commands there's no doubt about that there was a time when there were people within the society that you and I live in there was time when they would not be called up to give any testimony if the woman was a prostitute they would not accept her testimony in a court of law because they would say that this woman did not have morals she was not known to be upright and thus would be more easily led into or they believe that she would more easily lie for for many years that was true in the United States that if you didn't have a credible credibility about you you weren't going to be given a testimony and a lot of that is found right here when it says a faithful witness does not lie a false witness will utter lies verse 6 the scoffers seeks wisdom and doesn't find it but knowledge is easy to him who understands now a scoffer S confer is somebody who is who rejects instruction now notice something I'm going to develop this with you for a moment notice how it says the scoffers seeks wisdom and doesn't find it it could give on the outside the impression that that wisdom is withheld from someone who is actually seeking it is to notice that a scholar seeks wisdom so on the outside this seems to say that wisdoms with help from somebody who's seeking it but notice again Solomon refers to the one who was seeking as a scoffer and the Bible teaches that scholar actually lacks interest in the wisdom of God a scoffer is someone who has decided he doesn't believe but a wise man on the other hand a wise man fears God and and trust that God can be known in and that one who is seeking after the wisdom of the Lord will gain knowledge proverbs 1 we saw this at verse 7 in Chapter 1 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and instruction in in proverbs 18 verse 2 a fool has no delight in understanding but it in expressing his own heart so a scoffer is not really seeking at all as the point that's being made but somebody who is upright is and the person who is upright and the seeking the Lord is going to give him wisdom but the scholar will not receive it verse 7 go from the presence of a foolish man when you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge this is interesting go from the presence of a foolish man here you go this may sound harsh but its wisdom do not waste your time with someone who refuses good advice anybody here ever spend an hour or two hours trying to help somebody who's asking for advice only to have them leave and do the exact opposite of what you were encouraging them to do ever have that happen it happens every Sunday for me I speak for 45 No no but does that ever happen of course it does you sit down somebody somebody comes to you and and says I need help and and what do you do you take all this time and you share with them and you say this is what God's Word says and this is how it works and and they smile at you and then do the exact opposite of what you spent that 45 minutes that hour that sometimes sometimes I'll give you an example I think I can do that now it's been 35 36 years we had someone calling our house speaking to my wife Marie our church was fairly young at the time a woman we used to give our phone number out and she had it and she would call and she would tell Marie she told Marie you'll remember this that she was wondering about her sexuality and Marie I would come home from the office and she'd be on the phone with this woman and you'd be on for a half hour 45 minutes after I got home almost every day almost every day Marie would be talking to her Marie would be praying for her Marie would sear at church and ministered to her every Sunday the woman would come on a Wednesday she'd grab hold of Marie this went on for some time for some time until the woman finally called and said to Marie well I did it last night I got together with another woman and so we learned very early in ministry that some people are not hungry for help that some people don't desire and you can pretty much discover that with some experience in the Holy Spirit in your first conversation and so Solomon is saying there are times that you don't cast your pearls before swine there are times that you you go from the presence of a scoffer because they have no intention whatsoever of listening to the advice they're going to go and do what they want to do and I have to tell you I've been at this ministry for a long time and I've seen that more than once where you will be with somebody and speak to them even weep with them even weep with them and and and say this is what God's Word says and they go out and do what they want anyway because they're not looking for wisdom they're looking for permission they're looking for agreement they're looking for somebody to do what they want so here's a mouse ready here we go some people would you have your baby dedicated here we have a class some people want to know why do you have a class why do you do that I mean if they love Jesus why not just bring him on up there well I can't give you lots of reasons here's a couple one I got a phone call woman this is many years ago now I want to dedicate my baby and I say to her wonderful of course we love dedicating babies she says great my boyfriend and I and I said no wait a minute I said your boyfriend and I can you explain your situation I'd like to know it so she says yeah we're living together Mike I said do you know what baby dedication is and she says no not really she and she says I come from such and so religious tradition and we just wanted I said well what you want is a religious tradition but you obviously don't want to know what what the truth is let me share it with you about what dedication is and I shared you know we're committing this baby to be raised in the knowledge of Christ and you are not confessing to have a relationship with them plus you're in sin so what you need to do is deal with your sin and and I would be blessed to dedicate your baby when you get things in order and when you decide you really want to follow the Lord so he says oh okay and then two weeks later I get a phone call from a friend of mine who says you remember that because I had shared them you remember that I said yeah well she went to such and so church and she dedicated her baby there they do that how I could give you a story after story story after story where people have come up and have asked for advice and direction and once they hear something they don't want to hear I didn't give them permission to continue in sin and immediately you know while this church is filled with judgmentalism and they have no grace and you name it it's just no what look at we aren't going to violate what scripture says so that you can feel good for a weekend isn't going to happen and so that has happened here many many times and so we had to learn very early in our ministry that some people will ask for advice only to hear you agree with him and if you don't agree with them then they're out the door that's just what they do and so you'll have the same thing that doesn't mean you're cruel because I I hope and pray that I don't ever come off cruel to people because I I don't want to be and I'm not I just didn't wanted to be a pastor and honest and to speak the truth in love and the bottom line is that there are those who don't want to hear and that's why I've told you this probably recently how that there have been times when people have come up and asked me something and I've said to them do you want me to tell you the truth or do you want me to agree with you which one do you want and it shocks them do you want the truth or do you want me to agree you know I'll talk to you some other time because a lot of times but it's the truth that sets you free and so we need to be aware of these kinds of things and all in and and his when he says go from the presence of a foolish man when you do not perceive in him the lips of wisdom you know this the lips of knowledge this is an individual who is not desiring to really know the truth and you're going to see that he's foolish by the things that he's saying as you speak to him and when he begins to say foolish sometimes even profane things it's time to leave verse 8 the wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way but the folly of fools is deceit so the wisdom of the prudent is to understand the word understand again means to consider or to perceive it speaks of serene so this sensible consider the way they take and they live accordingly fools by not taking into account God in his law will live a life of self deceit but they end up being judged verse nine fools mock at sin but among the upright there is favor fools mocks in and that they Mock the guilt because it requires repentance to be freed from its bondage fools excuse and trivialized sin they'll even call believers unenlightened they think that we're we're backwards individuals because we believe certain things that they don't believe they markets and they trivialize it they do but healing begins at honest repentance and confession as well as forsaking the sin and accountability and so fools Marquette's in but among the upright there is favor fools will make fun of you because you don't do what they do they'll even think it's strange that you've changed they'll say come on I'm RELIGIOUS to you know I believe in God I went to church on Easter I do every year it's the only time I go and they make fun of it but you're so uptight I've had that you have to I yeah don't be so uptight and I and they don't understand it and they'll trivialize it what's the big deal what's the big deal if somebody drank a little bit I mean he was mad he was hurt he was depressed what's the big deal if he goes out on his wife what's the big deal I mean we all need a little variety and after all she wasn't nice to him and you know they can always work it up they they mock it sin they really do they trivialize they make it small they make it something that doesn't matter but what the upright he says there is favor verse 10 the heart knows its own bitterness and the stranger does not share it's joy isn't that's an interesting the heart knows its own bitterness and a stranger does not share its joy bitterness and joy the heart knows these things there are certain joys and certain sorrows that you can't share be careful be wise when you share your joys and be wise when you share your sorrows because sometimes when you share your joys the person you're so overjoyed in you're sharing with gets envious and angry and they go man why is God blessing you you're no better than in it and you're go I didn't say I'm better than you but after what you just said I guess I am no uh yeah I'm real careful with who I share my bitterness my sorrows with and my Joy's with I'm very careful with that because not everybody understands and you have to be aware of that let me give you a piece of advice that some of you already most of you know already it is better sometimes just a weep with someone who's sad than to advise them it is sometimes better to just let them cry than it is for you to come up with five Bible verses as to why it's not right for them to cry be careful Facebook is filled with philosophers and theologians filled with it people who never go to church but they've read the Bible once or something in it and they give their advice a young woman is pregnant she and her husband have desired to have a baby she loses the baby she miscarries she's got sorrow in her heart and she shares with friend and the friend says don't worry you'll get pregnant again don't ever do that don't ever say that just weep with her just be there for her maybe she'll never get pregnant again maybe it's a one-time thing and she'll never have a chance to be pregnant again you don't know that you don't know what she's feeling so just you know I've said this before you know when in the book of Job when job went through all the calamities that he had and finally his friends come to bring comfort to him they did the best job of bringing him comfort when they just sat there silently because once they opened their mouth you've got chapter after chapter of chapter of stupid one thing after another one thing after another you know blaming him you know I've seen that evil only follows those who do evil you know you see this kind of line of reasoning in the book of Job and yet when you begin job God says he's a righteous man the most righteous man on the face of the earth and yet all these people miserable comforters job calls them are giving him advice when the best thing they could have done is just wept with a man who's lost everything we've got to learn that we've got to learn that and so it's true so true in verse 10 the heart knows its own bitterness a stranger does not share its join verse 11 the house of the wicked will be overthrown but the tent of the upright will flourish notice there's a contrast here that may not be evident upon first reading notice the contrast is between a house and a tent the house is something that speaks of permanence but a tent speaks of a temporary dwelling and so somebody said the house of the wicked that they build and beautify and love and that they look upon as a lasting home will perish the hope that they found it upon it shall come to a quick end on the other hand the righteous build only a tent on earth and this identifies them as strangers and pilgrims still this abode is more secure and the hopes that are built upon it are more lasting because it continues on unto everlasting life you can build a house with the intent of this world as my home or you live in a tent when you say I'm just passing through that's the point that he's making verse 12 this is a powerful scripture there is a way that seems right to a man but it's end is the way of death I've quoted that so many times there's a way that people think is the right way to go in and they pursue that sometimes with all of their heart but it's not taking them to heaven at all it's taken them in the opposite direction in Matthew 7:13 and 14 jesus said enter by the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction and there are many who go in by it because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life there are few who find it these are there are people that they'll speak to you and you know if you share your faith with people often enough you you will have people you will say no I'm doing just fine I don't need the lot I believe there's there's just one way to God are you kidding me I mean do you realize how many billions of people are on the face of the earth and you're telling me there's only one way for them to get into heaven I can't believe that I don't believe that I'm trying hard I'm a religious person I do my best I am charitable at times you know I pray often and they're relying on their own way there's a way that seems right into a man the end thereof is the way of death and Jesus said no there's a narrow path that you take and it comes through him there's a way and it's Jesus Christ verse 13 even in laughter the heart may sorrow and the end of mirth may be grief that's true absolutely true one it's been said and I think there may be some general truth in this that that many comedians are actually the saddest people that you're ever going to be around they make other people laugh but they're sorrowful in their own hearts is that's an absolute truth and we've seen that many times but something else that I've seen notice again even in laughter the heart may sorrow you know I've done funeral services and I have to tire there been times during the funeral service when someone who is remembering that person remembers something silly that they did and before you know it everybody's just busting up we're just laughing because yeah do you remember when he oh yeah I remember that and so you'll get the best friend up there and say you know my friend he did this when you were kids and and you're laughing but even in laughter their sorrow even at a funeral that is so sad there are times that you laugh so an even laughter the heart may sorrow at the end of mirth may be grief verse 14 the backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways but a good man will be satisfied from above backsliders very often get what they so greatly desire but the problem is it's only temporary sometimes somebody who's backsliding may be enjoying what he's doing or she's doing and they're thinking oh I'll be fine and this will last forever but ultimately they will discover that they settled for Less than what they could have had in second Peter chapter 2 verses 20 through 22 the Apostle said for if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ they are again entangled in them and overcome the latter end is worse for them than the beginning for it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than having known it to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them but it has happened to them according to the true proverb a dog returns to his own vomit and a sow having washed to her wallowing in the mire he can seem like you're having a great old time you know when you go on back when you backslide but the fact is it's a very miserable life verse 15 the simple believes every word but the prudent considers well his steps wisdom protects you from gullibility wisdom gives discernment wisdom gives you principles to make decisions by especially spiritual decisions the simple on the other hand they believe every word but like the Bereans when something is said especially something spiritual you ought to get into the Word of God and check it out acts 17:11 says these were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica in that they received the word with all readiness and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so so just because somebody is saying something doesn't mean you should just believe every single word test and see whether these things are so whether these things are true verse 16 a wise man fears and departs from evil but a full range and is self-confident wisdom produces caution producing concern with consequences of action but not so with a fool he continues in foolishness and ultimately receives judgment verse 17 a quick tempered man acts foolishly and a man of wicked intentions is hated and there's no doubt about that by acting foolishly out of anger you get you end up being disliked and hated by those whom you've injured some people can hide their anger that's the man of wicked intentions they can hide his anger but his actions will provoke others to hate him be aware of that verses 18 and 19 the simple inherit folly but the prudent are crowned with knowledge the evil will bow before the good the wicked at the gates of the righteous honor the honor you receive in life is equal to the wisdom you lived by ultimately the wicked will acknowledge that you were wise because you followed God verse 20 the poor man is hated even by his own neighbor but the rich has many friends oh boy in that sweet money can buy friendship but the poor have nothing that others want money can get a lot when you have a lot of money you'll have a lot of friends I don't know here this is going to sound harsh we can edit it it's it that there's truth to it maybe not a hundred percent but sometimes I've seen some old and homely men with a beautiful woman at his arm she's 50 years younger than he is and I'll say he's rich that's why he's got that arm candy well maybe he's just a great conversationalist maybe she likes him for his mind mm-hmm if you believe that I do have a bridge in Brooklyn that I put up for sale money does buy friendship but a poor person has nothing that people want somebody said and it's like uh looks like a sane prosperous you many friends will own in cloudy days you stand alone and that's true as long as you got the money you're gonna have friends you know we've seen that with athletes we've seen that with with people who have money from a variety of ways I was reading about lottery winners lottery winners did you know that lottery winners that 70% of them lose or spend everything in five years or less lose or spend everything in five years or less that many have been exploited by others including relatives and friends suddenly Uncle Bill you never even heard of is calling you up giving you a sob story that I read about one lottery winner who was kidnapped and killed by his sister-in-law and another lottery winner that was poisoned and then I read of a lottery winner I don't play the lottery just so you know how do you know this I don't play it I looked it up all mighty Google tell me about lottery winners and he did but I read of one lottery winner who received a hundred and sixty four million dollars that's a lot of money and upon winning a hundred and sixty-four million dollars cash he said this he said when you have the money to buy whatever you want you realize it's not the stuff you can buy that's really important it's still being around your family there are things that money can't buy but the bottom line is he's saying here and he's making it very clear a poor man is hated even by his own neighbors so you don't have anything they want they have nothing to do with you but a rich man oh he's got many friends because oh it's always gonna be somebody around hoping you'll pick up the tab verse 21 he who despises his neighbor sins but he who has mercy on the poor happy is he again the poor are generally treated as worthless to be kind shows that you love the Lord as you're kind to them verse 22 do they not go astray who devise evil but mercy and truth belong to those who devise good in other words speaking of devising and that speaks of decisions life is made up of a series decisions if you divide 0 your life will be fruitless verse 23 in all labor there's profit idle chatter leads only to poverty that's an interesting proverb profit is the result of hard work not meaningless talk don't be talking about it but do it it's easy to have these these dreams you know but it's one thing to dream it's another thing to do so he's saying it's easy to talk about things and plan things and never act he said rather than just making chatter just talking about it go out and do something and work hard with your hand because there's a reward to that labor I came from a family my father was a hard worker my dad was a very hard worker my dad was the guy that when he worked for his company the company worked for my dad was the guy that on his vacation they would call because they knew my dad would come into work that was my dad my dad was a hard worker and he came from a heritage of hard workers my grandmother my dad's mother my grandmother had 13 children when my grandmother died my grandmother had 118 great and great great grandchildren we took over the city I mean we she and when my grandmother gave birth to one of my one of my uncle's or one of my aunts my mom told me about she said your grandmother gave birth in the morning and in the afternoon was in the field working next to her husband that that's that's the work ethic that my family had and has that you should work you should work with your hands because in labor there is great profit and it's not always financial it's the joy of being able to put your head on a pillow at night saying I worked hard today and I accomplished a number of things and that's something we need to come back to here in the United States by the way it's working is something that actually has profit to it and that's what the the proverb is making it very clear and I'll labor there's profit but idle chatter leads only poverty the one who's just talking about it isn't working ends up poor verse 24 the crown of the wise is the riches but the foolishness of fools is folly those who become rich while retaining integrity are honored and they're respected the foolish who gain riches are not regarded as wise they're simply rich fools verse 25 the true witness delivers souls but a deceitful witness speaks lies so obviously a true witness in court can save a life of the person on trial but also a true testimony of the gospel produces salvation and deceit will never save anyone verse 26 in the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence and his children will have a place of refuge the fear of the Lord is a fountain of life to turn one away from the snares of death God is a secure fortress for his children running to him produces security and life he is also a fountain of life a fountain of life in a dry land where there is no water all you need to do is go to Israel and these these kinds of statements when he speaks of a fountain of life these kinds of statements statements begin to make sense to you those who recently Kant went with us Israel they can see this differently now because in Israel it's a very dry in many places a very dry place it's very arid a lot of desert and as you're there you can see how how the the the the climate the conditions you dry out but one of the things that our our guide is is constantly honest about when you go to Israel is drink water drink water and they carry water in that in the bus and he's their country needed you're going to dry out you're going to dehydrate and me I'm not a water drinker I don't drink a lot of water and so by habit I don't and the first day I was there just this last time I have a splitting headache in the evening and I realized I haven't been drink water so in a dry and thirsty land God is one who provides the water of life and and and when Jesus would stand up and say that that he is though the water of life when he made the comet come and drink of me all you were thirsty I will give you living water they would understand because in this dry and thirsty land he's saying I am promising you something that you won't get with normal water because he had said in another place if he who drinks of this water will thirst again but who he drinks of the water I shall give him shall never thirst again so that water comes from the Spirit of the Lord and so what we are to do is to desire the water of the Lord he is our fountain of life to us verse 28 in a multitude of people as a king's honor but in the lack of people is a downfall of a prince well political power normally is demonstrated by the amount of people in the party a king's power is normally revealed by the size of his empire but if he's overly ambitious he can lose his army through unnecessary Wars verse 29 he who is slow to wrath his great understanding but he who is impulsive exalts folly he who is impulsive exalts folly you sure looked dumb when you blow up in anger in front of people many years ago my wife Marie and I went to a gas station I'll never forget this I learned a lesson I was a young man at the time in my 30s and we pulled into a gas station and I was waiting to get to a gas pump and I was facing the pumps there were the the gas pumps were in front of me I was facing it waiting for a car to exit and so this car on my right an older gentleman probably well I was in my 30s I thought he was ancient you probably my age now and he know I was watching him and he got mad about something and his poor little wife seated in the passenger seat you could see her little hands that she was putting her hands on her face this guy was getting mad in in as he was driving and she you could see that the little thing was afraid and he put his car and he thought he was putting it into drive but he actually put it into reverse and backed up into a pickup truck that was behind him and this older man jumps out of the car I'm I'm watching it you know it's right in front of me and he jumps out and begins to act threatening Lee to the driver in this truck and the driver in the truck got out of the truck and that man was about six four three hundred pounds I'll never forget as his big guy climbs out of the truck and obviously was able to take care of himself and I saw him hitching his pants like and the old man starts yelling and I'm watching the poor woman and there was nothing I could do if I meddle in another you'll see this later on in another man's affairs it's like picking up a dog by the ears there are times that you don't step into things you let them play out because you'll make them worse and I just sat there I thought oh my and then the older man went even further by yelling I'm gonna go get my gun I'm gonna get my gun and I'm thinking how sad is this how sad to get to a place in your life will you blow up over nothing in front of people and the scripture is very very clear about that that's a foolish thing to do it's a foolish thing for us to to get angry in that way and to act in such a way and it just makes you sad to see that he who is slow to wrath has great understanding but he who exalt as impulsive exalts folly verse 30 a sound heart is life to the body but Envy is rottenness to the bones interestingly the word sound heart speaks of health a healthy heart when it speaks of a healthy heart it speaks of a healthy attitude a healthy attitude contributes to good health but envy envy rots you from the inside verse 31 he oppresses the poor reproaches his maker but he who honors him has mercy on the needy caring for people is the mark of a man or a woman who has faith in God because caring for the poor loving and caring for them when when Abel honors the Lord verse 32 the wicked is banished in his wickedness but the righteous has a refuge in his death well notice it says the wicked is banished in his wickedness you see people believe everyone goes to heaven they think everyone is good enough to but the scripture says the wicked will be banished and he's noticed he is banished in his same condition the wicked is banished in his wickedness he's banished in the same condition and he cannot enter into heaven and he goes to what is called his own place verse 33 wisdom rests in the heart of him who has understanding but what is in the heart of fools his made known well that's because out of the abundance of the heart the fool will speak and he reveals what he truly is verse 34 righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people okay I'll say a couple things about this because it's obvious this would this really speaks for itself righteousness exalts a nation sin as a reproach somebody once said America is great because America is good and if America ever ceases to be good America will cease to be great alexis de tocqueville I'll just say this quickly here though this is really a message in and of itself the United States was built on Biblical principles historically we have a tendency today of course to try and find all the evil we can and we do all we can to to remove the myth from the man and also we we want to we want to talk about the leaders and founders of our nation and try and find everything we can about them there are many who do this try and find as much evil about them as they can to prove that America has really just always been an evil nation America the United States is not a perfect nation and I don't believe any one of us in this room think that it is or ever has been and that's obvious but one of the things that we have is we had principles that the United States was founded on that made this a great nation and that's why an observer could say it's great because it's good because they went throughout this new era this new nation and they saw a lot of goodness in it but there's an attack and and we're living in a time when this attack is is is so full it's I don't want to go on and on about this because there's a lot that I I really I could could say that I won't other than the merit marriage and family is under such an attack and we've got to understand that guys we've got to understand that when when you destroy the father and mother the husband wife when you destroy that unit you're undermining the foundations of everything in the nation when you when you when you look in the book of Genesis from chapters 1 to 9 you see that there are three God ordained institutions in those first nine chapters you see the church you see human government and you see marriage marriage is the foundation of the morality of a nation and when we stop valuing relationships between a husband and a wife and reduce them to a significant other of my choice the confucian that we bring on our children and the undermining of the morality of the nation leads to what we're dealing with now and what we're dealing with now in this nation is a nation that is rapidly ceasing to be good I'll give you an example if I may there are many concerned about the shootings that have taken place in our schools as we should be as we should be of course but if you want an example of hip hypocrisy Planned Parenthood was involved in a recent student march protesting what they call dangerous firearms that's the term dangerous firearms as far as I'm concerned firearms are dangerous by themselves about dangerous firearms and this is what they said some of you perhaps saw it in the news or read about it Planned Parenthood statement was we are concerned for the safety of children I wonder if any of you heard that did any of you hear that I'd like to know did anybody hear that okay Planned Parenthood said that we are concerned for the safety of children Planned Parenthood and so I thought really so how many abortions have gone through Planned Parenthood up to now up to right now no from will say January to right now do you know how many nine thousand five hundred and fourteen ninety thousand five hundred and fourteen abortions have been performed by Planned Parenthood the largest abortion provider in the United States your tax dollars support and have how can you say to me forgive me I'm preaching to the choir but how can a person say to me you care about children when you provide for them to be removed from a mother's womb how can you tell me that that is such gross hypocrisy but that's what's taking place you see we Christians who value life are looked at as being backwards and ignorant and and if you should happen to believe in the Second Amendment and you believe in your right to bear firearms then you are looked at as being part of the problem it's convoluted reasoning but unfortunately it's a reasoning that many people have succumbed to I find it appalling that somebody will tell me as an American citizen that I don't have a right to bear arms when there they are telling me this well they have their bodyguard who has armed right behind him so this person is carrying a gun to protect you but I have no right to have a firearm to protect my family are you kidding me and yet we're buying into it and when you have young kids who are marching with no life experiences at all no statistical evidence of the things that they're claiming as profane as the day is long and thinking themselves to be brilliant because they're on TV because after all is it that the goal of every young American to have your face on TV YouTube you name it's got to be out there because I'm important righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people and what we have right now in this nation is reproach Billy Graham once said this if if God doesn't judge America he will apologize the saw and Gomorrah because the nation has gone down the tubes it really has some of you don't know that because you're young and you haven't seen Los Angeles the way I did well you could actually go into the City of LA and there weren't tents everywhere syringes everywhere human feces on the sidewalks Skid Row existed but have you seen it recently or gone into alley and seeing what's happening did this nation to this state we are the lowest in in quality of life the 50th in quality of life in the nation because we are allowing it to go down into a cesspool because the church that cries out says we've got to stop this and listen marriages need we're told to shut up because we're ignorant we have the answer don't be quiet we have the answer be willing to speak we have the answer and so righteousness will exalt a nation obviously we should be active in our voting we should be aware of what is politically occurring but we especially need to be salt in light and we really need to become more of an influence in these last days and then finally Kings favor is toward a wise servant but it's wrath is against him who causes shame a wise worker brings honor to the king and is valued but the incompetent one only gets in trouble and thus we conclude chapter 14
