hey good morning Chuck here's dappled rains today let me show you how to install a downspout adapter properly this is common people do this stuff all the time and I follow behind so many people that say they're contractors and this isn't just not right take a look so this homeowner the gutter company came out and said you must have this oversize gutter to solve your problem because there was so much water coming down and getting under his foundation and all they did was make the problem worse and you can see this is a huge 7 inch commercial gutter with 4 by 6 downspouts and just to give you the example you see the K style gutter up there that's more than enough for you know almost any roof preferably you would want to run you know the 6 inch gutter but this is 5 inch K style better and it works perfectly there's no problem with that but take a look at this and let me show you what the problem is and why you need to call a professional here's a real typical problem that we see from other companies and you can see it right away instead of going straight down into the ground and turning they've used the a elbow and brought it out across the ground it just looks horrible but we're gonna fix that I think they did that because this is an oversized downspout but luckily you know in our trucks in our vans we carry all kinds of parts we do not pull up to a job in a pickup truck the our vans are full of equipment and parts to correct any drainage problems so we're gonna make this go straight down into the ground start by taking this apart then we're gonna dig straight down and put a ninety on it and replace all of this so we find this quite a bit probably the system works good but Wow you know down spouts drains you know this is so easy to do and yes that is a huge oversized downspout and you can see the fitting that we're gonna put on here it is actually six inch we're gonna have to reduce that down to four and tie that into this drain tile so again the real secret is you've got to go straight down the wall for that professional look and if you come off to the side it just won't look right you can see there's a lot of tree roots here that's probably why these people didn't do that and they I know that they didn't have the downspout adapter that's something the drainage companies have that you know other smaller companies just don't have so you notice how we're scraping that wall that's the secret you got to go straight down the wall and then you can put your 90 there at the bottom and make a very good connection and a very nice downspout Jane to give you an example of the size of this downspout this is a three by four this is actually an oversized downspout but take a look at the difference this is a commercial-grade downspout and it's really overkill for the house but this is what they got so and you can see here's another example of a three by four see that you see how much bigger this piece is remember it's supposed to go to six inch and we're going to reduce that to four inch so we've got a couple of different couplings this is a slip coupling goes from four inch to 6 inch and it just slides right inside of here we'll glue all this up here in just a second we're going to get some of our measurements so I'm going to slide this guy up here just to get started then we're going to get the 4 inch 90 and put this down here at the bottom of the trench we're gonna make a measurement from the top of this coupling to the to the inside of this coupling so we can set a piece of 4-inch in there I'm just going to transfer the measurement you can see it's a hole saw okay so what we had to do was go from this oversized downspout remember that this is actually a four by six four by six downspout and that means it's going to go to six inch pipe there's two fittings here the downspout adapter and the forward of a six reducer okay so then we've got solid PVC down to a solid 90 and then we adapted to their pipe which is the 4 inch corrugated so it looks so good this way and again and you call out a company to come do your work make sure that they are a drainage company and again the secret is to go straight up to that wall it's so important and this will come out and look like a professional install and this is something you guys can do yourself if you see that company coming out there and kind of coming off at an angle like that tell them to stop they'll do what you ask just tell them to stop and make it right but doesn't that look so much better so much better this is the way that your install should come out these are professional tips for the DIY you can make this look like a professional install you you know in every neighborhood across the country whether you're up north whether you're in the middle of the country out west New York or down here in Florida if you take the walk in the morning maybe you like to get out and walk and exercise take a look at how many homes have gutters and downspouts but no underground drain tile the downspout drain and do they have problems of course they do if you have a poured wall you're going to have problems you have a cinderblock wall you're going to have problems basements crawl space or slabs if without that downspout drain you're begging for problems and this is such an easy thing to install even the DIY can do this now I'm just going to show you a couple homes right here beautiful home got nice 5-inch K style gutters but take a look over here you can see see the one in the back splashes out see the one in the front you see the hole that it's digging each time it rains take a look at the neighbors they've got six-inch K style gutters and three by four downspouts it just splashes out and you can see the erosion that takes place here's one on the garage splashing out every home in this neighborhood has a foundation issue and I'm just gonna walk along so you can see I mean that's two homes let me show you the third home in a row I mean they're all the same can you see it you see that downspout splashes out look at this one they splashed it out a little bit farther but still what an eyesore look at the one in the back it's just terrible and every home in this neighborhood in any city that I walked into everyone has foundation issues this one's so bad can you see that crack forming in the wall right there look at that that is from the downspout drain and it's it's movement in that foundation it's just terrible number one cause of concrete failure down spouts drains see how that splashes out not only is that an eyesore but take a look see all the cracking taking place in the driveway on the apron this is water and it's not surface water it's subsurface water it's underneath cracking it cracks all over downspouts they just splash out this is a real big no-no if you have foundation problems this is the number one cause of foundation issues you so there you have it we've got that oversized downspout on the air the downspout adapter remember somebody sold this guy the poor guy slow them these commercial gutters and did that move water off the roof oh yeah but there was absolutely no need for that and you know just a regular you know the neighbors take a look they've got you know standard six inch gutters with oversized three by four and that's the way it should be you hey this is Chuck with Apple drains reminding you that if you believe you can do something I guarantee you can do it have a great day [Music] so this is Independence Day weekend and we just made a little repair but you know I just wanted you to see you know what how many homes there are if you walk down the street in your neighborhood if you like to get out and walk in the morning take a look at how many people's downspouts splash out and do they have a problem in their basement or crawlspace I'll bet you they do and if they don't it's just a matter of time whether you have block walls or a poured wall you're going to have foundation issues and it's so simple to solve
