you hey we're up on the roof and I want to talk to you about my favorite roofing product for a custom home here in the southern US which is metal there's three reasons why I think metal roofs are really the best choice for a custom home number one durability a metal roof can be a class a fire protectant for your house the other thing I like about metal in terms of durability is it's a long life span you know you might see a metal roof lasts between 50 and 100 years and that can be quite a bit longer than a lot of other roofing choices the reason being is incredibly fire resistant and hail resistant the other things I like about metal is energy efficiency you can get a very high reflectivity out of a metal roof which is really important for us as we've got the Sun beating down on that on that lid or that top part of our house and the third reason why I like metal roos is they're very recyclable the steel on the maroof is very valuable and so in 50 years when this roof does get replaced really the the new owners of this house or whoever it replaces this roof is going to have every incentive in the world to recycle this roof and not throw it in the dumpster now let's talk about a few best practices this right here is a perfect scene we've got three things I want to talk to you about number one is underlayment when you're putting a metal roof on incredibly important to put the correct underlayment on we don't want to use a standard tar paper we want to use a fully adhered product this is my favorite out there in the marketplace Carlisle's whip 300 HT this is a full vapor barrier for this roof it also has some self-healing properties as we're screwing through this so this is a really good underlayment and this product you see here this is a 3d mesh this particular one is income mat you can see here what it does is it gives us an air gap or a space so when we put that roof down it's not tight up against our underlayment in this case it's probably somewhere around a quarter to three eighths of a gap and because we've got this morning dew this is a great visual to why we want to do this you can see there's condensation that's formed on top of that underlayment and there's some great compensation you can see here on the metal roof there's probably some of that underneath this metal as well and that's really why we want to space this roof off the deck by just a little bit we've got a really low pitch on this roof and so we're using this 3d mesh but if we had a pitch to roof you know three 12 or above we'd use something like this a one by four that we could put on the horizontal we'd gap these by about 16 inches and then we'd actually have about a three-quarter inch air gap which is even better if you'd like more information on any of these technologies or roofing products in general visit my blog at matt Reisinger comm otherwise we'll see you next time you
