in 2011 we realized that there was a desperate need for our christian artists to go beyond the music that they presented and go beyond the music we did these artists before they are presented to you are taken through some baking you know there's lots of mentorship there's lots of skilling to enable them work well within the world and prepare them for ministry and over the years we've had some memorable acts crossing the firefighting present stage with big names like martin circle we've had koopie blair grease the stage we have had the cannon jains who interestingly performed at our wedding as well yes they did we've had the the let mark elvis oh i wonder where he would be right now he was very talented and he too graced this stage andrea presson and many others right and over the last few years we've changed things up a little bit by having more than one artist come on to the stage and it's continues this year with two very special artists coming onto the pi fm present stage this year we have karunji and profit profit with an f right yep and prophet is actually an acronym that stands for it stands for prayer prayer righteousness uh obedience obedience yes faith endurance endurance and trustworthy yep and he believes that these are values that god has called him to live by as he ministers and he's ministered for a very long time starting off at the age of 10 when he performed his first song backed up interestingly by his mother and sister when he was only 10 years old and he's gone on to now where we get to see him as a mature artist what about karunji karunji also started singing interestingly when she was very young at the age of five she used to sing in sunday school i'm sure most of you remember your sunday school days karunji was that star when she was five years old but she only discovered that she wanted to pursue singing as a career when she completed a secondary school back in 2017. right and as we start i want to say a big thank you to our little bit of a journey of where we have come from as part of him present thank you ben and rachel so i'm basically here to give you some highlights of how all this started the journey from its beginning i should be saying once upon a time but today we discuss how profit and currency became the people that we are going to see today how did they get nominated ywanda we actually put out a call if democracy was a person paraffin is that person we asked you to vote we asked you to share with us who do you feel is that artists that needs a platform that needs a stage that needs room to grow that needs an opportunity to be the person that they are today and you guys voted we listened so ladies and gentlemen we chose karanji and prophet then moving on swiftly to the journey that they had to walk i'm sure you people are going to hear not you people sorry that sounds rude i'm sure you're going to hear about what they have learned over the time because they're going to be having conversations here and they're with the hosts but hirefriend presents basically is us doing a training it's like an academy called music school where we give artists insight into the musical journey how do they sing what's their doctrine how do they brand themselves how do they market themselves and to give you some highlights into what happened for karunji and profit we had very awesome florocca we had limo blaze we even had marian who was able to actually do the vocal classes for them it was a great class for them and i hope that you get to listen to each and everything that they get to share but away from that we actually brought them to you as well the on-air experience i'm hoping you guys had had some sort of encounter with them they were featured on different shows um we had clips of them uh doing practice we had clips of them on different shows we had clips of them dancing all that happened on air and we actually gave you a front proceed on that on our different social and our events and online with our intentional audience engagement and in keeping with our parent church what toto parafm is involved in outreach programs like easter in prison in which we visit correctional facilities taking a message of love and hope and of course those basic necessities this year with the love and support of our love family which is the name we use to fondly refer to our listeners through the mutual campaign and their generous giving we were able to visit competing islam and take the youth some love and hope and blessings over easter we witnessed up to 40 youth giving their lives to christ and that was amazing rfm is also out to raise leaders in entertainment and media and that's done through programs like radio apprentice it's an annual program a competition actually in which we identify fresh talent for radio and we do that through a cutthroat competition that keeps everyone on their toes until we finally identify the radio apprentice and now for the reason we're here today which is parafm presents this initiative started in 2011 by par fm of course and from artists way back like martin sekou to our 2019 artists awesome and sammy smiles we took a break in 2020 because of the pandemic and now in 2021 we decided to switch things up a little bit and ask our listeners to nominate artists who they thought were great upcoming voices in the gospel is karen gisela gabriela most of you know me as karunji of course i am karyonji i love god i love music i love to worship god and i love [Music] dance i love acting performing arts generally and yeah i am a gospel artist growing up was let me say it was it was a whole bunch of mixed emotions and everything i i'm i am the only child of my mother and the second one child of my dad i stay with my i have grown up with my mother and my grandmother and my mother siblings and it's been it's been a roller coaster really i have learnt from a lot of people like they say like they say the village raised me my mother's village raised me my mom used to be a music choir director back then so joining music was i studied music when i was a child and i was like fine uh my mom would go for like rehearsals and i would i would listen and enjoy and you know i i coached the feelings and the love for music then and then i joined sunday school i i would follow my mother's young sister whenever she was she would go into sunday school and i would follow her and you know i would enjoy everything about it the singing the dancing and then i grew up and and joined sunday school actually i i enjoyed it i i enjoyed being picked you know so i guess the love for music started back then then when i i think when i was in s2 or s3 that's when i discovered man i could sing and i could actually do this you know so i wrote a letter to my mother it was estoya i wrote a letter to my mother and asked her if i could like if she could like use the money she was using to pay for my fees to like put me through music and you know record music and everything yeah it was a very child those were very childish thoughts so i asked her to do that and she actually didn't reply so i went through school and then after a while she she told me she sat me down and talked to me and i was like you know just wait until you've done es6 and there you can decide whatever you want to do so when i finished my essex i i had decided i wanted to do low because i thought you know okay the myth or whatever people are saying was that you can't earn for music music is you know you can do music but as a hobby so i i decided i would do law and then probably later on do music or you know stay stay doing ministry like church and yeah that would be enough so when i finished my essays i i take my choices of you know universities and and courses to my mother and she was like because my first my first course was law then i think journalism then then i think tourism or something like that so i go to han she's like you know what you've always wanted to do music let's look for a school or a an institute or something that where you can do music so that's how i started doing music at the african institute of music it was it's been amazing i have i learned a lot while i was there and then when i was when i when i joined music in 2019 i had a concert with my dad my dad my dad does music he's a guitarist and a musician he does secular but then world music world music as in the genre so i enjoyed his kind of music because it was it was not that you know no more kind that's when i i got into a bit of kenneth mugabe's music and and enjoyed that and by then i had not decided that gospel music is what i wanted to do i i was still in that place of figuring myself out so we had this show at the national theater and i thought man after that i was going to be getting calls from people like we need you to do this we need to do that we need you here we need you there but that did not happen so later that year i i i joined i i think i get up i i i meet smart kids and then as we're doing some wedding washing at somebody and was playing kids he asks me to he gives me the song and he's like you know i want female focus on this song like go and sleep on it and see what you can come up with so a few like a few weeks later he called me into studio we did this song and i thought it was going to be like you know it would it would not sell as much or it would not boom as much because you know it's it's it's it's just a song so i was surprised when it actually hit and i was i was really amazed so i was like this is something i can actually do so we go back to studio with smart keys and do the jesus song and then people actually left the song and i was like yes this is actually something i really wanted to do and then i got a call from power fm and man that was like mind-blowing because i did not expect it i felt like there are people out there that have you know a number of songs and he had one song by then and it was amazing so when i got the call i uh [Music] i could not possibly i could not believe it because i had attended the previous python presents and searched in the queues and i was like you know maybe one day maybe some day i'll you know make it too fast and presents so i got when i got the call it was big news it was amazing and i was honored to be chosen and voted for and nominated by by you know the fans and everyone that was a part of the selection process so they told me we'd have classes in like the next two weeks but then i had to juggle between school work and then and then the classes of part f and presents but i think there's this this saying that goes god's will is god's bill like where there's a way where there's a will there's a way so i feel like god has been there through it all and he has helped me uh he has helped me not you know break down or you know [Music] succumb to the pressure of the busy schedules and everything helped me manage and helped me balance everything uh the class the class that was most memorable was the class with limo blaze it was amazing i i remember like throughout the whole class i was sitting like this and i could not believe that i was actually being like speaking or talking to nemo blaze so the whole journey was amazing and i enjoyed each and every part of it prophet became like a brother to me whenever i would have issues i would call him and be like okay like let's he'll give me advice and everything so i have learned a lot i've gotten to know people that i couldn't i wouldn't have known so they they taught us about uh music distribution online like through spotify youtube uh all these other platforms where we can you know actually put our music and sell man you know uh that was one of the big things i think i learned and it was a class we had with florocca where he told us you cannot put a price on god's on what god has given you and a gift that god has given you yes we can you know find ways of trying to make money out of the music but it shouldn't be all about the money because first of all your call to minister and to the people so i i learned that and took that at heart and it's been working for me working with me it's been helping me you know if someone calls me i think about even the least person that wants to actually listen to my music so it's not all about the money [Music] and then up until now where we are i uh i always just want to thank god and to thank the sponsors i want to thank uh that the facilitators that took their time off to you know speak into our lives and you know teach us and talk to us uh the part like part from people are part of them who believed in us the presenters that keep on playing our music and keep on you know checking in on us i prophet aka the african prince i'm a christian rapper a singer a graphics designer and a drummer i love the lord so much i mean he's he's he's been by my side through a lot of things uh growing up um i didn't grow up with a father since i was 11 and he has surely been my father i grew up in a christian family by the grace of god i grew up i was born when my parents had already accepted jesus christ as their lord and savior so um we have been i was rooted with my siblings i've been rooted in christ since we were young and you know from growing up to having at some point when i was young i remember we've been encouraged to share the word as young as we were so since childhood it's we have been raised in the world and like in a christian setting my love for music started when i was just three years old i was told by my mother that at church i used to get a pen and a pencil and imitate the drum on the chairs and i used to do that every every service quietly so i believe that that's when the the music thing started coming out in me though to actually go on stage and write something that was when i was 10 years old i wrote my very first song and i performed it all ministered to it in church with my mom and my sis so i started at 10 i wrote my very first song at 10 and i ministered with my mom and my sister and through that experience is when the love for rap came through because on that day when i performed actually not know what my sister was going to perform or i did not know her verse but she wrote a verse and amazing she wrapped on that song that i had i had written and when she wrapped um like the whole crowd went up you know and everyone was like you know a girl rapping and uh that's when my desire for rap started first and foremost this is a god-given gift god-given talent and uh i came to realization that i am supposed to use this gift for his glory that's the number one reason why i do what i do i could have used this talented this time that they've given me to you know maybe sing about other things and uh that don't you know connect to the maker but i believe as prophet that he gave me this gift as a tool to draw people to him and that's why i do the music that i do i use my gift and my talent to draw people to the one who gave me the talent in the first place because i believe he chose me as a servant and that's why he instilled it in me to be able to produce good music so i simple times do music to draw people to god mike music communicates um if you look at oh if you look at my songs that i've done so far is that one key factor that that kind of tries to summarize you know so it's a message of hope but i wouldn't say it's only a message of hope alone um in my music i try mostly to try to let the person that is listening um first and foremost to to understand who they are in christ and of course how christ loves them and wants them to you know on his side on the good side on the father's side so that's what my that's what i i really want to to portray or that's what that's the message i want to relate to the people that listen and also of course apart from the message alone i want someone also to listen to my sound and know that i am african hence that's why i add afrobeats or african melodies into my music now you know i want them to first of all and relate to where i'm coming from and then from there on you know i give them that message of hope love and try to make them understand who they are in christ well i got the call one evening and man i was blown a lost words because man this is like i've attended the last out of the last five half represents before this i attended four of them and i've always attended yeah i always came in early always sat behind and watched these shows and i was always asking god to give me an opportunity to just you know proclaim his name and go through this kind of membership program so when i got that call i was like yeah you know i went crazy and uh yeah they was overwhelmed with joy and uh from the time they called me i just knew that greatness is next because i've seen the artists that have gone through this program and i've followed them over and over until today and they're all doing great you know their branding changed and everything changed so i knew that there must have been something that maybe most artists don't get that's the knowledge so i came in anticipating and expecting to get that knowledge and i thank uh you know paraffin presents for you know the opportunity and the classes going through the classes you know um to mention about a few um career mapping doctrine um financial management that vocal classes have never gone through a vocal class like forever i had never until that day and it was really helpful so i've been impacted you know i've got information that i know that most artists out there may not have had the opportunity to get you know and um it was amazing you know you after the classes we started the band rehearsals and it's always there's always that cool feel that i get when my music is being played live you know and i'm doing live because i love live music so yeah it's been so fun awesome though but fun you know having live music singing to live instruments you know for not my very first time but in this kind of setting for the first time so yeah the journey has been um wonderful um the promotion from paraffin the interviews going to radio can you imagine that until this period is when i got the chance to actually be on power fm yeah for the very first time so i'm really thankful that all of these are fast fast fasts all throughout so yeah um i really came in expecting to get great things and the fact is that my expectations have been met and beyond so i'm really thankful to the whole team at powerful i want to encourage a young person out there that wants to do music that wants to join this ministry this industry i want to first of all encourage you to have focus um believe in god read the word and study it let it be part of you because as a gospel artist this is where you get the inspiration this is where you get um the words you know the way you get the messages that are going to impact someone's life i mean you have to read the word let it also do a work a different kind of work in you and then from that overflow you give a good message i'm going to touch someone out there so read the word have focus plan don't just do things anyhow but you should have a plan for your music have a plan of see yourself a vision yourself where you want to see yourself in the future you know where you want to see yourself in the future is what is going to be a guideline of how you're going to be moving in different segments that's how by god's grace i am here i saw myself somewhere in three years or so myself that i want to do this i want to become this one to be this in my music and this is how it shaped me in how i write my songs shape means how i deliver it shaped
