Postman-turned-TikTok star Nathan Evans talks about his viral path to fame l GMA

[Music] and if you're not on tick-tock you may have missed the latest trend that's a serious throwback all the way for the 19th century that is a legit throwback and now we are breaking down these songs and tell you how they have become such a viral hit take a listen to this the name of the ship was a bully of tea the winds blew up her bird upturned below my belly boys that's 26 year old nathan evans from scotland singing the wellerman a centuries-old sea shanty [Music] sea shanties date back to the 1800s folk songs that were sung by sailors working on whaling ships but now centuries later this catchy sea tune the winds blew up [Music] turning into an unexpected phenomenon on social media with millions mesmerized by nathan's rendition it's even taken on a new life people harmonizing and layering in their vocals sharing the remixes now nathan has gone from singing a shanty in his bedroom to striking world fame streams of his shanty spiking 7 thousand percent on [Music] [Music] all right joining us now is the man behind the sea shanty craze nathan evans is joining us live from scotland nathan good morning good morning how are you it's good to see you good to hear you and see you this morning before a couple of the note here says before a couple of weeks ago people had no idea what sea shanties were i didn't know what they were until this morning but you have got people hooked what do you think it is about this music that's got people so excited i think i think it's because of the times we're in at the minute uh and the fact that everybody's feeling a bit down they're all stuck at home and and the pandemics just get everybody and about that downer so i think this kind of boosts everybody's spirits and they can join in through tick tock they can they can do it they can stamp your feet and sing along i think it and it brings that feel good factor so everybody loves it i think it is it doesn't make you feel good it's very catchy until a week ago you were full to you were postman in scotland before you decided to take on this music thing full time so did anyone recognize you on your route from tick tock uh i'd been recognized a couple of times and so before all this happened and before i was on the tv i think i'd been recognized two or three times like at the door handing parcels in and um there's people saying i've seen you on tick tock but since then and uploading the weatherman and been on the tv now no now i'm getting like three people before it's even nine o'clock recognizing me walking up the street and stuff so yeah you don't even have to sing that's the best scottish accent i've ever heard [Laughter] congratulations also you you've you've just got a record deal so what can we expect when's the record going to come out what's going to be on it uh the record came out today uh the remix is out today and it is already i was actually just about to say it was number eight but i've just had a text to say it's number two and the uk itunes charts already so you can listen it now wow that's fantastic oh yeah and your video has been viewed nearly eight million times we've seen a lot of people putting their own spin on it do you have a favorite it's got to be andrew lloyd webber it has got to be like there is nobody else um who's talked that there he goes we're seeing it right there yeah i love that well you know nathan we want to thank you for joining us and now you're going to perform the weller man live so nathan yep take it away my friend there once was a ship that put to see the name of the ship was a belly of tea the winds blew up [Music] she'd not been two weeks from shore and down on her a right whale boy the captain caught all hands and swore he'd take that wailing toe shooting me the willow man come to bring us sugar and tea and rum then when the one was one we'll take our leave and go before the boat had hit the water the whale still came up and caught all hands to the side tarpon and for her when she'd dive down low shooting me the weatherman come [Music] well hey there gma fans robin roberts here thanks for checking out our youtube channel lots of great stuff here so go on click the subscribe button right over right over here to get more of awesome videos and content from gma every day anytime we thank you for watching and we'll see you in the morning on gma
