Playing My Fans Pieces - Episode III ($1000 Prize!)

final result was that you had the highest score great that's pretty sick this is the first time i'm actually going to give a prize to the winner uh do you want to know what the prize is yeah what is it it's a thousand dollars oh freak what yeah congratulations you're kidding right musical basics fans from around the world welcome to play my fans episode number three so after episode number two we had an insane response from audiences who truly connected with the music and since then the fan composers featured have all seen a huge boost in subscribers we've also seen a huge increase in the number of submissions for episode number three so after i reviewed every single piece i selected three composers from around the world and practiced their pieces for two months straight and oh my gosh i am so excited to show you guys these amazing pieces so the 1 000 grand prize will go to the best piece which will be decided by a small panel of judges okay so stick around until the end of the video to see the judge's decision for who wins okay composer number one is from hong kong and his name is honey beef which also happens to be my favorite dish at panda express his piece is called awakening which is about an orphan who lost his parents and chases his dreams in life let's listen together [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so [Music] so [Music] so i really enjoyed that in fact honey beef told me that he started composing because of michael shen from episode number two which is incredible to me how well he writes after only two months of writing music so let me just give his piece of score so i think the technique was kind of average very expensive decent structure wasn't the most original melody or harmony uh it was certainly playable to some extent so my total score is that we can keep supporting these composers alright our next composer is all the way from canada and his name is ron de los santos his piece is called winter fantasy which is a tribute to winter it's okay so that was pretty awesome so ron tells me that he wrote this piece while indoors and looking at the snow storm outside in fact he's one of the few composers who can actually play his own piece you can go check out his own rendition of winter fantasy link is in the description below alright time for the score so there was some really good harmonies and pianistic writing very expressive decent structure but it was a bit long so i have to deduct points for that very original but not the most playable so my total score for composer number two ron is 43.5 out of 50. before we continue remember to harmonize that like button because if this video gets 50 000 likes then i'll do the next fans pieces video asap our final composer is all the way from the philippines and guess what it's razal again so razal was actually featured in episode number two rozelle's piece it's called cantab and it means luster it's about looking at the stars in the night sky and seeing your entire life flash before your eyes let's listen [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] okay so that was absolutely gorgeous i want to tell you guys a story which is originally i had a rule where i would never feature the same composer for two of these fan episodes in a row but when i first heard this piece i actually broke down in tears because i started seeing my future i saw an old man looking back on his life and i just started crying so let's give this piece a score the technique was not bad extremely expressive the structure is pretty solid definitely original and i think the harmonic progression was kind of unique because it kind of shifted between two key signatures and it was certainly playable so that actually gives us a score of 44 out of 50 for composer number three roselle alright so if it was just me scoring then rizal will win by only 0.5 points but i do think i'm a little bit biased because of how much i connected to his piece so i decided to invite two other judges to help me judge these pieces so before we continue to the official judging process please comment down below which piece you think was the best and why okay so let's welcome our judges bat and jess to the call [Applause] okay nice to have you guys here so they were actually the featured composers from the fans pieces episode number one uh so bad and jess both of you guys are my long-term fans and also very active in the community in fact the number one and number two social butterflies so i really trust both of your opinions okay and uh as both of you know that the winner of this judging process will get a thousand dollars so now we're gonna listen to the first piece which is called awakening and it's by honey beef [Music] great first thoughts before we get to scoring well overall i think it's a very expressive piece uh it's very raw it's just very expressive awesome awesome all right so let's go down the list uh technique score l10 that person and jess i'd say an eight and expressiveness eight eight point five structure seven eight originality eight this is jess's chance two seven give give a score i tried to be nice a vindictive score all right playability seven i'd probably agree with that seven okay cool beans all right so now we can listen to winner fantasy by the second composer ron de los santos okay awesome uh so first reactions it feels like a very deep piece it reminds me of like some of the more romantic style type of music for me uh the dynamic range of this piece was really interesting because it has some very soft parts and it has some very intense parts as well all right let's do the scoring compositional technique eight just nine expressiveness nine nine point five all right structure seven point five seven originality eight eight point five playability eight uh six point five yeah that's why i was surprised that bat gave a higher playability score so it's by results means luster in philippine language so a person looking at the night sky seeing many stars and this site reminds of their own life where they came from stardust and they will go back to stardust when they die cool all right jess first thoughts i enjoy how much it connects with the story the the piece definitely gives the dreamy vibe that connects with the story okay so bat compositional technique uh seven jess eight point five expressiveness seven eight point five structure eight eight point five 7.5 7. playability 9.5 7 for playability you sure very easy it didn't look very good yeah okay fair enough oh my god i'm actually i'm actually really nervous because the final score is gonna be the winner yeah uh i'm gonna pull up the spreadsheet now and now you guys can see my scores alright so now we are gonna sum up all the scores okay drum roll please all right all right don't don't wow so we have summed up all three of these and as we can see awakening has 114 points winner fantasy has 124.5 points and kentav has 122.5 points so that means that ron is the winner close call between winter fantasy and kintob well two points is still still quite a big difference yeah alright so i'm actually going to call up contestant number two right now ron and uh let him know that he won i'm actually a little bit nervous because i've never done this before like give out a monetary price to someone who wants something let's do this hello hello hey man yeah i can hear you how are you doing what's up i'm pretty good i was about like really busy today i had to help my parents with a business thing i like spend three hours outside oh [ __ ] okay you know we're doing the third episode right of the fans pieces yeah we gave every piece of score okay final result was that you had the highest score great that's pretty sick yeah and um this is the first time that where i'm actually going to give a price to the winner guess what the price is um yes i don't know oh vst do you want my vst the one i use for my piano well what was it oh it's the criteria and yours had the highest score but damn i don't know what to say what the frick you're crazy in my you know opinion that your piece was truly fantastic and the other judges i think they agree with me wait who are the other judges oh bat and jess thanks man like lately i've been like doubting myself kind of i don't know because it's you know how in your life april what was his name arima's like not able to hear the piano or something like that well in like my composer mind that's like what's been going on for like months now so which explains why i haven't been composing recent as much oh really it sucks yeah it's like i can't see any beauty anymore which is like freak what am i supposed to do i mean like i can sort of guess it out but then like it has to happen in like very big heaps and sometimes i get like depressed i mean at least this gives me some hope that maybe the that maybe i'm just freaking beauty blind enough that my pieces just suck i mean no it's it's it's very common for artists to doubt themselves you know i think everyone kind of goes through that but i guess just kind of keep in mind that you know we had over 150 submissions this time yeah yours was i think in my opinion it's the best thanks you know once this episode gets released probably get a lot of you know people to come and check you out and possibly to follow you you know so hopefully that provides you some more encouragement on your music thanks man i gotta tell my parents are good today yeah let them know okay so i remember when i was like ron's age i would write music like all day and at that time it was like this really pure love because i didn't think about making money during that time at all uh instead i just wanted to write music that expressed like these fundamental basic emotions that i had in my heart uh and so now whenever i see like a young composer with that same passion i just feel like i want to support them that's kind of why for these fan pieces videos right i try to select pieces that are different than what those like official composing competitions would select because i don't care that much about technical details or like whether you're doing like something really crazy music theory wise the thing i care about the most is finding music where i can hear those raw human emotions like love and pain and like hope you know like music that basically stirs up the deepest parts of your soul that's the kind of music i love the most and so my philosophy is always like you don't need complicated theory to write good music especially music that expresses our most basic and human emotions and so that's why this channel is called musical basics is because that's the kind of music that i want to support all right so if you guys want to
