places where billionaires and celebrities hide when they're off duty where champagne flows like water and diamonds adorn every finger but what sets these destinations apart and what goes on behind the scenes when the rich and famous let their hair down [Music] we had so much fun here i mean it's beautiful welcome to the island of saint barthelemy also known as st bart's the ultimate escape for the rich and famous it's time in this episode we're invited inside the world of the super wealthy as they vacation in paradise [Music] i don't want to say i'm retired but almost we go behind the scenes to meet the people whose job it is to give billionaires a holiday to remember start at 100 000 a week and we're given vip access to an exclusive wedding where no expense is spared the last thing to do is to put the kennels on and and party can begin located 400 kilometers east of puerto rico this caribbean island is tiny just 24 square kilometers in size but it has a towering reputation as the billionaires playground of choice there is a kind of competition for who's going to have the biggest yacht every year we have paul mccartney a serb on my captain because very often red hot chili peppers black eyed peas beyonce jay-z but what makes saint bart's the glitterati's favorite getaway from a nature point of view it's just beautiful to behold as you can see this is paradise we're shooting here because here i have a very beautiful simple backdrop you know there's a sense of europe very much about it you get the blend of the three different grapes pinot noir phenomena and chardonnay it's like france so you get the nice food the beautiful beaches without the crappy french attitude welcome to the lounge of baron rochelle come inside there is a lot of luxury brands cartier and hermes this one actually is 490 euro despite attracting world famous luxury brands saint vargz has worked hard to limit the number of tourists there are only around 30 boutique style hotels on the island with just a total of around 600 bookable rooms [Music] luxury is scarcity uh there is nothing called mass luxury it doesn't exist this ultra exclusivity has made saint barts a haven for privacy seeking billionaires most of the billionaires you will see here you won't notice this beginner it's like they're like me flip flop with a short you cannot see on the outfit is milan roman and bromwich is somebody that wants to be here because he's mr nobody here all these people they come to sambar to don't be annoyed so when they come they just want to be quiet and they don't want to get the paparazzi all around there are no mass transport links to saint bart's cruise liners are banned from its harbour and the only way to fly into the island is by private plane all right it's time [Music] it's time thank you i love you until next time i love you 55 year old retired businessman rich and his wife cindy have been coming to st bart's for the last 25 years we come probably seven or eight times a year we try to come as much as you know as much as we can this time the couple are here to attend a lavish wedding shortcuts he's a famous dj that lives in new york and uh he's getting married so we're looking forward to that saturday night it's gonna be good i think you better picture your seatbelts tight what make sure it's tight for the landings the airport's runway is just 640 meters long one of the shortest in the world and even though pilots need special training to land here touching down can be a white knuckle ride i don't i don't look i just close my eyes on the way in it's kind of tight got to get to the ground really quick here we go planes have to fly between two small mountains and can often pass within just a few feet of people's heads [Applause] [Music] that we've had zach you did good on that one i love you each year there are around 3 800 landings on the island's only runway bringing in around 180 000 wealthy tourists ah paradise we're here finally [Music] st bath's journey from a remote caribbean island to celebrity mecca began when an eccentric dutch aviator landed his plane in 1947 and quickly spotted the island's potential tourism really began with a man by the name of remy de hainan he had this bright idea to build a hotel and he built a place called eden rock in 1950 eden rock became the very first luxury hotel on st bart's and soon remy was hosting parties for fellow aviator and billionaire howard hughes and hollywood royalty greta garbo and robert mitchum very quickly word spread among america's rich elite one of the most famous families that came with the rockefellers well it was mr rockefeller he came on a hydroplane in the early 50s and he just fell in love with the island and from there he invited his friends over and they came with their boats or with their planes and that's basically how saint bart got known with the americans by the 1970s a landing strip was developed for small aircraft and luxury yachts became a familiar sight in the harbour along with superstars of the day such as jackie onassis billy joel and steve martin people found saint parts appealing because it wasn't on the tourist map it made it all the more seductive for them still to come we are about to go swim with some sea turtles we discover what it's like to honeymoon on st barts you come here and you say this is the most pristine beach i've ever seen in my life and we reveal which celebrities cut short their stay here they were supposed to be here for 10 days and i think they left after four [Music] for over 70 years st bart's has been seducing the world's wealthiest holidaymakers built in the 1950s the island's first ever hotel eden rock was purchased in 1995 by the parents of made in chelsea star spencer matthews today regular guests include pippa middleton leonardo dicaprio and brad pitt the hotels on st parts are beautiful and just incredibly well designed ranked by conde nast traveller as one of the top hotels in the world la barthelemy is a small boutique hotel that caters for high-end weddings [Music] if you were to build from the ground an ideal wedding destination it would look exactly like this miami-based cryptocurrency entrepreneurs michael and marina are the latest couple to tie the knot here we have uh quite a few leftovers from the villa what is it let's see they gifted us something oh my god the last thing i needed is oh my god yeah this is the last thing we need the wedding was right here on the beach really had i think around 35 guests so it was very easy to set up some really beautiful rows of tears right there on the beach in between those two palm trees and the newlyweds are still recovering from the festivities we should maybe have a sip i think after after i think after after all of the chaos it might help us what do you think uh i can't believe i'm saying this but yeah i'd like to drink rum at ten in the morning le bath element has around 52 rooms starting at 800 pounds per night plus two exclusive six bedroom villas costing over five thousand pounds per night and the hotel has its own private beach with some unique features hi so welcome to the barcelona something you have to do here it's the experience of swimming with the turtles so you can just grab a snorkeling equipment and you can just swim with them and you can see them all around here so that's the one of the best experience to do at the bartelling well we are about to go swim with some sea turtles [Music] [Music] incredible we found one big guy too really awesome what an amazing thing to do on this awesome island [Music] if you're lucky enough to be one of the 9 900 people who live on st bart's you don't just enjoy beautiful beaches and celebrity neighbors you also enjoy a zero crime rate i live from the under island for six years i still not have closed my door up to my apartment on my house i never lock it it's a safe island where you can still hitchhike as a woman at four o'clock in the morning and you're safe [Music] saint bath's president bruno mcgrath was born on the island he's seen it transformed from a remote french outpost to one of the safest and wealthiest islands in the caribbean i'm 70 years old so i have known the island when it was very poor the electricity came in in june 1962. and as president of st bats bruno mcgrath is determined that the island maintains its european heritage zambada has always been very french because the population that comes in that came in in 1648 was french population st bars is like being in france in the middle of the caribbean every july president mcgrath leads the island's celebrations for the french national holiday bastille day we celebrate in sunbaths we belong to france and at the same at the same time very happy to be french at 7 000 kilometers away from paris and there's plenty to celebrate today the island is debt-free and residents pay no income tax but the limited availability of property means the average house here costs around 4.5 million euros we made an option for quality instead of quantity the housing market in saint bart's is ever booming if you can afford a house on st parts you can afford a house just about anywhere st bart's estate agent zarek honeyset has been selling homes here for 15 years and has been involved in some of the island's biggest sales gustavia is like the main towns there's more apartments in downtown gustavia there's not really houses uh houses are going to be just above the the hill over there it's called la plant on the top of the set there's a few houses over there and someone's going out here but very few and those uh are you know very very sought after just over 10 years ago zarek was involved in a sale that was not only the most ever spent on a property in saint vaats but the highest price ever paid for a villa in the whole of the caribbean there was a large transaction done uh back in 2008 2009 which we were involved with but really can't discuss the property or the sale price or anything about it or who the owner is zarek may have to remain tight-lipped but a quick internet search will reveal that in 2009 none other than saint bart's regular roman abramovich bought a 70-acre estate here for a record 61 million euros just imagine the commission on that [Music] it's hard to find anything today uh sub uh three million euros and then it can go you know to the top end of the market you could be looking at the 30 million range but that's extremely very very nice properties zarek's latest sale is this luxurious waterfront villa located on one of the island's most desirable beaches welcome to palm beach the house we're closing on tomorrow we've got a five bedroom house here all on one level so you have the living room in the middle you've got the two bedrooms on each side and we've got this fabulous pool right in the center great for swimming and it faces the ocean the villa has a huge poolside outdoor living area this is where the family hangs out this is where you spend 90 of your time when you're in this house inside there's a giant tv room and reception area around which there are five large bedrooms all with their own ensuites so here we have a giant shower again so here's the barbecue area this is where you do your cooking or the private chef comes here and does a cooking for you the villa was listed for sale at around 13 million euros but it will end up back on the market as a rental property to provide what no doubt amounts to some extra loose change for its new owner so this house is available for rent um the weekly rate for this in the summer so right now is around 25 000 a week in the winter uh so that's you know between january and april you're looking at around 45 000 a week for such an eye-watering amount of money you'd expect a world-class holiday experience and the food available on st bats is no exception i would say that the food on st barts is probably the best of any caribbean island when you're in a restaurant in st bart's you feel like everybody is paying attention to you and everybody is making sure that your meal is memorable [Music] wealthy holidaymakers have around 70 restaurants on st bats to choose from including the legendary bonitos which has been one of the island's top-rated eateries since it opened 12 years ago bonito is a french and pan-american cuisine the goal when we started was to be the best or to be one of the best restaurants of the island benitos can be found in one of the island's hot spots perched on top of a hillside with stunning panoramic views of gastavia harbour when you arrive you get the barge of a drink this view this amazing view on the harbor an average starter here will set you back around 25 euros and a main course of ribeye steak around 90 euros but as you can imagine being a small island there's a lot of fish on the menu we're gonna make for you a tuna loin we're gonna grill it which is gonna give a little bit of flavor smoke flavor one steak on our menu is 40 49 euros if you're lucky enough to get a reservation here you can easily find yourself dining next to simon cowell jeff bezos or pippa middleton we have some uh some stars yes of course we have uh every year we have paul mccartney uh sir mccartney comes uh comes very often and some yeah beyonce jay-z for some actor the most known person came here and i cook a dish for her it was beyonce but we got red hot chili peppers black eyed peas a lot a lot of known people come here every year [Music] but it seems saint farts isn't always to the liking of every celebrity who comes to the island the kardashians they came and they were supposed to be here for 10 days and i think they left after four around 200 000 people visit saint barts each year almost all of them high spending tourists happy to splash out on the latest island fashion at one of the 200 or so boutiques so the last thing you want to do is when you go to saint partisan to over pack under pack and then buy some things when you're there when we go back to mainland france we're often overdressed because we're so used to dressing up when we go out 30 year old emily lab is a fashion photographer living on st bats today she's after the look for her next shoot let's ask which one you want to know how much is this outfit this is one of the most expensive pieces of the collection yeah i can tell because there's a lot of yeah yeah yeah this one actually is 490 euro okay the top is uh almost 200 yeah 190 rules so about 600 665 yes 657 for the outfit we have only high-end things we don't have in between [Music] today emily is looking to capture the latest in st bart's beachwear style so you see it's like hippie chicos [Music] i like this brand [Music] despite all the luxury shopping on offer here this bikini and cover-up combo is the classic st bats look that you'll find women sporting all over the island people are literally all day in a bathing suit with a cover-up and that is like the day look in st park [Music] whether you're staying in a luxury hotel a private villa or a multi-million pound yacht moored in the port of gustavia there's one thing that connects all visitors to st bart's and that's the incredible social scene you go to saint bars in high season and you simply expect that it's going to be party time usually when there is a good party somewhere if all the island knows it so the organ the organizers they talk about their friends and then all the island gets there today st bart's regulars rich and cindy are at a 50 years saint barts has been the ultimate escape for the rich and famous but it nearly all came to an end in 2017 when hurricane irma swept through the caribbean it caused over 1.4 billion pounds of damage to saint barts homes and hotels were swept away and tourism the island's only economy came to an abrupt halt in the months that followed many of saint bart's wealthy regulars played a key role in helping the island bounce back roman and bromwich has been a benefactor for this island he built our stadium he made it first time then the hurricane yama broke it down he rebuilt it we have another guy that gave us a scanner for the hospital so we have a lot of people that are contributing to to the nice way of living on this island and thank you thanks to the help of some rich benefactors the island has since been restored to its full glory and is now back to full capacity and the job of ensuring the big spending guests feel welcome falls to people like willie antonucci head butler at one of the island's most prestigious villas how much how are you [Music] can i stack to put some food on the table today willie and his team are preparing for the arrival of the latest vip there are around 400 villas for rent on the island and prices start at around 20 000 pounds a week this state-of-the-art 153 square meter villa comes complete with willie and his staff who are on call 24 7. in this villa we are dedicated for all staff with six people there's one executive chef one head butter as me another butler and three housekeeping girls my favorite bedroom every morning you wake up here you open your curtains and what is the view beautiful sea little island wow and jay-z has been seen on his daily run along the beach but as you can imagine this level of luxury on st bart's is beyond the reach of many mere mortals start at 100 000 a week and finish for new year's eve at 450 000 a week saint bart certainly has a lot to offer but it doesn't have everything it's approximately a one-hour boat ride to the nearest mcdonald's so what happens if you're a billionaire who gets tired of dining out on oat cuisine luckily there's still one bar where you can grab a quick cheap bite to eat so here we have people who's coming for lunch between work so a lot of workers the select bar in gustavia is run by mahay and lowick and it's unlike any other bar on the island so again like what makes the the selector a little bit apart from other bars is actually there is no service table so basically it's a self-service people are walking in they order drinks through these doors same for the kitchen they go to the kitchen they order the kitchen they bring their their own place in the tables is our burger boys he's been here for about like six seven years so here you can see there's a cheeseburger and uh if you want like the best bacon cheeseburger in the island you definitely should come here for lunch and with some of the island's lowest prices the select is a haven for any billionaires who like to count the pennies if you come here you can have like a heineken for 250 and you can have a cheeseburger for eight years you won't find that nowhere [Music] unlike the rest of the island le select has stuck to its avoid progress motto working hard to maintain its beach shack vibe we are keeping it simple and we will not change it we like the local crowd if tourists want to come it's fine but basically the local it's it's the energy of the select that's why people come in this place may look a little basic but the high value of commercial real estate on saint bouts means it's estimated to be worth over 50 million dollars but for celebrities looking for somewhere to feel comfortable sipping a beer in a relaxed atmosphere this place is priceless we had jimmy buffett you know back in the days there was a journey holiday they used to come you know people come in here and they're not we don't ask who they are they're just like regular customers [Music] the idyllic seclusion of saint barts means the rich and famous can truly relax here without the hassle of paparazzi or autograph hunters roman and bronvich is somebody that you can run into at the bass bar and he'll buy you a drink on this island it's not unusual to find yourself suddenly rubbing shoulders with a superstar there was a fire camp on the beach he was playing guitar with a few friends and so we were there with like five six people and he's there playing i don't know the guy but actually he's playing guitar pretty well at the end oh he was the guitarist of the red chili peppers [Music] if you do find yourself mixing with the rich elite on saint barts it's not uncommon to be invited out on a boat trip to explore the island's many different beaches oh there's the boat this must be it today newlyweds michael and marina are off on a cruise with local sailor miguel and a few of his friends [Music] i really do think there is a there's sort of this like shared mentality this shared understanding here that when you come to st bart's like we are all equally here to have the best time okay guys good evening that will be kami and miguel for you tonight on the boat we start from gustav we're going to the columbia beach we're gonna have the paddle board and swim and after we head back around seven o'clock we have some customers from barcelona they just make a wedding and after a few few local people too it's like they come often and they come with friends on board so that's why it's really good sunset on columbia tonight so like a normal day in paradise um everything could happen really quick any moment anytime we all know each other from phrase because the island is really small so everybody knows each other without knowing it's kind of a little of the best beach in sinbad just like paradise here these are some local friends we just met on the island and miguel invited us back to have another sunset sale and uh we couldn't resist so fantastic way to close the week yeah best way to close out our wedding week [Music] the big day has finally arrived for joey and lisa and after spending a small fortune flying over a hundred guests to st bart's for his wedding this international dj is experiencing the unfamiliar sensation of nerves [Music] it's crazy the dj in crowds are 10 15 20 000 people and i don't break a sweat the second you're about to walk in to see your bride for the first time it's a it's a little different it's also an anxious time for the couple's wedding florist georgie hi how are you i have the flowers okay come in can we thank you as he's about to reveal the floral bouquet to the bride so you have one that is a little bit special that guts you can wear it light like this or upside down that's so cool okay okay you can also put it like this very cool on me it doesn't look well though but i knew it's going to be perfect and then i have something very simple perfect that's perfect i love it thank you so uh the important thing is that it stays here until the very last moment because they're not in the water anymore but this is it like it love it i love it thank you so much thank you thank you he's the best and i trusted him i like simple and you know understated this is a very special moment and and we are just an hour and a half before the before the ceremony so i think that she's a little bit you know crazy in a positive point of view but i think that she's happier like many of the weddings on st bart's the ceremony is outside to make the most of the beautiful scenery this is where the ceremony is going to take place we are putting some some lovely garden roses uh on the top of the ceremony structure look at the beauty of this english garden spray roses beautiful i ah sorry my friend we need to do the ceremony structure in the very last moment because it's outside and it's really hot here but even in the caribbean having your wedding outside does carry a few risks one thing you never want to see through already rain i'm pretty sure right now joey and lisa is probably having a stress fit right now still to come the race is on to save joey and lisa's big day i would be panicking with you be panicking with you but listen we'd rather have the rain happen now than in the middle of the ceremony so let's get it over with they say it's a blessing after a 10-minute shower the rain clouds appear to pass but the wedding venue is waterlogged and staff scramble to dry everything out we are 20 minutes before the ceremony the rain stopped which is a very good new and uh and now we are we are trying to to put away the water and to make it possible to ceremonies to happen [Music] the last thing to do is to put the candles on and and party can begin this is my favorite moment it means that we are on time and everything is ready happiness to the bride in the groom despite the last minute weather worries joey and lisa kick off their nuptials dry and on schedule can i have everybody's attention please to everybody by the times when clouds drift across the face of the sun in your lives remembering does not mean the sun has gone away [Music] one and near when you're side by side and warming near where you're in separate rooms or even distance [Music] i give you this ring as a sample of my love for you [Music] the weather held out yes thank god and now it's clearing up we're so excited for joining lisa [Music] st park's got the best romance in the world it's the best place on the planet so happy worked out most weddings on st varts are small celebrations of between 60 to 150 people but there are a few times of the year when the whole island comes together for one big party [Music] every year the port of gustavia hosts what could easily be the world's largest collection of billionaires in one place everyone wants to be in new jersey in some arts on a yacht or in a big party starting thanksgiving is when the super yachts start arriving these very very rich people who have huge yachts celebrate in the part of gosavia in 2019 52 of the world's most expensive superyachts were spotted in gustavia harbour including the 162 meter long eclipse owned by yes you guessed it roman abramovic there is a kind of competition for who's going to have the biggest yacht during new year villa rentals can start at around 100 000 a week and in 2019 when mariah carey performed at a club here a table cost upwards of ten thousand dollars prince he gave one his last concert just before he died here on new year's eve so that was very special aside from new year there is another annual event that's celebrated here every july st bart celebrates bastille day and newlyweds michael and marina have decided to extend their stay and join in the festivities just last minute touch-ups to my makeup for bastille day because why not uh we need to celebrate it's very festive this island is going to be the most celebratory today so we're going to look our best the couple have checked out of la bartholomy and into this palatial villa overlooking the harbour which will be the center of the bastille day celebrations this evening there's plenty of excitement down and music down in the harbor a lot of people on boats partying having a good time the eden rock over to the left phenomenal cocktails we were over there last night i imagine also a great party tonight we have a dinner reservation at seven and then fireworks at eight and the party kicks off after that so let's do it bastille day is a sunrise to sunset celebration full of music and dancing this is it this is the main party and like new year's eve tonight's celebration climaxes in a huge firework display over the harbour it's the best day so it's french holiday uh so we have a pretty cool firework find the city center of gustavia with a lot of people everyone is coming here [Music] that's something you have to do here whatever the occasion if you're ever lucky enough to find yourself on saint bouts it's hard not to celebrate the unique charms of this tropical island paradise where the world's most famous faces come to let their hair down yes yes we have some uh some stars yeah but actually they're like people like uh like everybody [Music] such a cool chic island that once you're here we're all just local saint bards [Applause] we don't care who you are you're a person in the swimsuit and i think that's why they love to come here i'm very confident for the success of some bards through the years to come thailand is a little rock in the caribbean but it's famous all over the world luxury is something that is hard to find and hard to get and if it's easily accessed then it really isn't luxury next time we're in the jewel of america's crown the hamptons it's the playground of the rich and
