welcome to the very end of the road not taken welcome back screen crush i'm ryan airy and let's talk about the final episode of picard and all of those easter eggs now as some of you know we did a breakdown of picard episode one and we wanted to cover the entire season but we just didn't have the bandwidth so before we talk about the final episode we want to go through all those fun easter eggs from the whole season that we noticed but we weren't able to put in a video in episode two q says how yesterday's enterprise have you which is a reference to one of my favorite tng episodes yesterday's enterprise in that episode an event changed the course of history and picard finds himself in a darker timeline where the federation is at war with the klingon empire gainen is also a key figure in that episode general picard's trophy room is filled with easter eggs including the skull of gold cot from deep space nine spock's father saric who q also mentions decapitated on the steps of the vulcan science academy in front of a crowd that included his wife and son and there's also martok who became chancellor of the klingon empire after the dominion war and this armor is of a klingon torchbearer this is a ceremonial role of someone who summons all the klingon houses to come to their aid like we first saw on discovery we also get this name drop i'll come general cisco right away which is a reference to a thong song no commander cisco from deep space in nine or actually it could be his son jake but jake was always more of a writer than a fighter brent spiner cameos as a hologram of adam soon a safe galaxy is a human galaxy foreshadowing his role later in the series and this one is a super deep cut the board queen says which references the show 12 monkeys when a time traveler goes into the past to avert a global pandemic a plague killed seven billion people in that show the red forest was a plane that was outside of time in episode three there's another 12 monkeys easter egg seven and rafi go to mark ridge tower referencing the corrupt mark ridge group from 12 monkeys and when they talk about time travel techniques they mentioned slingshotting around the sun which of course is how kirk and his crew time traveled in star trek iv but also how they time traveled in the episode tomorrow is yesterday in that episode kirk and his crew are trapped on an air force base separated from their communicators just like rio says in this season this season also has many other similarities to star trek iv including using a stolen ship that has problems with its transporters and as a storytelling device this keeps everybody from being able to immediately solve their problems with future tech for instance we also have rios and chekhov who go to hospitals and authorities are suspicious of them because of their nationalities in both instances this helps reveal the prejudice of the times in episode four we also have the return of bus punk from the voyage home but in this episode he's kind of learned his lesson you might stop in that noise [Music] now interesting side story the actor is kirk thatcher who actually wrote both songs the original is called i hate you and the new one is called i still hate you dude is also in spider-man homecoming here but there is a small possible continuity problem here if the timeline had been changed then kirk and spock would have never traveled back in time to save the whales and the punk would not have recognized the danger of being told to shut off his music by a stranger on the bus or actually wait no wait the probe in star trek iv would have still arrived on earth so maybe a version of kirk did travel back in time and tell this guy to turn off that damn noise after all history does tend to repeat itself rio's falling for theresa is similar to bones falling for edith keeler in the best episode of the original series city on the edge of forever that was also a time travel story where the crew was trying to prevent a dark future from happening in fact this delhi sign reads tipton brothers a nod to the writers of the comic book version of the city on the edge of forever scott and david tipton but the best sitting on the edge of forever easter egg is in episode 4 right here when picard and gainan walk by the same storefront window that kirk and edith walked by then later in episode 6 picard throws himself in front of sung's car to save renee the reverse of what happens to edith keeler in that episode now a lot of people were wondering why geinan doesn't remember picard after all they met in the 19 teens do i know you not yet but you will well here's why picard traveled from a different timeline where history had been altered so in his new timeline he never traveled back in time to meet gainan because general picard was off slaughtering alien races gainan says you're looking for a supervisor otherwise known as a watcher so this hilarious look-alike is a watcher but so was gary 7 from the original series episode assignment earth now that episode was actually intended to be a backdoor pilot for a new series that was never picked up in fact picard and talen used the same fog transporting technique that we saw in that episode and she hates time travelers just like gary 7. well i don't like time travelers i am of this time period you are not and you change history you'll destroy the earth and probably yourselves too of course this isn't much of an easter egg because picard actually directly references the episode kirk's enterprise cross paths with a human called gary gary seven the episode ends with q trying to manipulate the mind of picard's ancestor renee who is reading a dixon hill mystery novel picard loved these books in tng and he used them as a setting for his first holodeck adventure the characters our meat are generated by the computer of course yet they feel real they seem real in every way and this whole setting is called jackson roykirk plaza named after the inventor of the ai nomad i am nomad what is opinion nomad was one of the first ai in star trek and there's a fun fan theory that it's the original source of the borg in episode 6 there is a super obscure nomad easter egg here this is the original model for nomad that spock found in the design manuals in the episode changeling by the way that easter egg came from ryan britt at den of geek his writing is amazing you should really check him out follow him on twitter in episode 5 the board queen tries out different voices to assume command like data did when he was hijacking the enterprise in the episode brothers computer recognized picard jean-luc alpha 2 clearance and hey do you know who this is who fired adam sung that's leah thompson from space camp and back to the future she also directed episodes three and four of the show the guy next to her is dr rosenko maybe an ancestor of wharf's adopted parents i want to see everything the whole ship at home i have all the specs and diagrams of the galaxy class starships renee's passport says that she was born on november 22 1996 when first contact was released in theaters that's pretty cool because that is another great track time travel story and the renewal date for her passport was september 24th 2017 the day when discovery premiered and kind of renewed the star trek franchise and here's an easter egg that's really deep it goes to show how much the filmmakers worked on putting easter eggs in this show the number on q's card is real when you call it there is a message that says hello you have reached the queue continuum we are unable to get to the phone right now because we are busy living in a plane of existence your feeble mortal mind cannot possibly comprehend furthermore it's pointless to leave a message because we of course already knew that you would call and we simply do not care have a nice day so on to episode six rene describes this ship as ov-165 shuttle and if it looks familiar it was in the opening of star trek enterprise and the ov here stands for orbital vehicles and nasa programs now one of my favorite parts of this series is how it's tidying up the star trek timeline in the past it was implied that the eugenics wars with khan were in the 1990s obviously didn't happen in our 1990s the eugenics wars were when augmented humans conquered large swaths of the planet but now those events are being more intertwined with the world war 3 that happens in the 21st century picard kind of cleans all this record keeping up when he says the history of this time period is wildly incomplete also i love the reveal that adam sung was partially responsible for starting the eugenics wars he is star trek's original mad scientist this is also similar to his descendant eric sync on enterprise we saw that he was imprisoned for using outlaw genetic manipulation intelligent species reject technology that would enhance ability moving on to episode 7 where we journey through picard's memories and finally get the reveal of what happened to his mom it's great to see this finally come full circle because his mother's haunted past was hinted at all the way back in tng's first season it's got to be you've been dead but i'm always visual you know that gun it's so sad looking at this moment in context with picard living his whole life blaming his dad for his mother's mental illness there's also a brief parallel with the boy in this episode who draws a chalk mural on the wall while picard's mother paints a mural on glass in their atrium his dad is played by james kallus who played gaius baltar on ronald moore's battlestar galactica and of course ronald moore also wrote some of the greatest star trek episodes of all time picard is in his ready room on the enterprise e judging by the nemesis era uniform that his dad is wearing now during their examination he name drops betazoids even at bases we can't get a read and the flashback of his mother playing pretend is likely the root of picard's interest in play acting on the holodeck especially his love for shakespeare you're here to learn about the human condition and there is no better way of doing that than by embracing shakespeare then there's this moment which lives dialogue from several of the best picard-focused tng episodes because this is when picard's identity was first stripped from you are himself they're only victims you made them what they are from the episode the hunted when he's referring to genetically bred soldiers fitting into this season's groundwork for the eugenics wars that i'm going to talk about just in a bit i'd rather die i'd rather die as the man i was than live the life i just saw from tapestry when jean-luc realizes that his mistakes have made him who he is in fact this episode taking place in picard's mind seems like a nod to two of my all-time favorite episodes the inner light best episode of tng and hard time when o'brien mentally lives out a life in prison and deep space nine when rios reveals his past he says i'm from chile i just i work in outer space a nod to this famous kirkline no i'm from iowa i only work in outer space when allison pill enters the bar there's a band playing and get this the singer of the band is sonny azelle the wife of patrick stewart well done sir after he wakes up and he's trying to decipher q's plan he remembers know thyself that's what he wanted know myself this is essentially what q's final lesson to picard was in the finale all good things we wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons that is the exploration that awaits you so he goes to gainan for help because remember she had a previous relationship with q before we have had some dealings those dealings were two centuries ago this creature is not what she appears to be also ryan britta denne geek pointed out that the way she raised her hands is how she reacted to cue in that same episode cue who and then we meet jay carnes as agent wells but get this karnes also played a time traveling cop from the 2800s named duquesne in relativity one of the best episodes of voyager he recruits seven of nine and janeway to help stop an explosion that destroys the timeline this guy could be duquesne's ancestor i like to think that he is and his name wells is likely a nod to sci-fi writer h.g wells who pioneered time travel stories with his novel the time machine episode 8 begins with the flashback of young wells encountering vulcans on earth but i thought vulcans didn't make first contact to the 2060s you said sir in your star trek recap well they didn't but they had previously visited earth just secretly in fact there's a whole episode on enterprise about depaul's grandmother and other vulcans being stuck on earth for years and pretending to be humans it's great episode picard is able to figure out their vulcans pretty quickly by reenacting a mind meld and remember he might meld with saric and tng now this episode also reveals that q is dying which could have been foreshadowed by the newest season of discovery when vance says the q continuum were considered as well but as there's been no contact for 600 years and this is unlike anything they've done before we don't believe it's them so like maybe they all died out or they got bored and pulled in arwyn chairs are mortal alive exactly after all there was a cue who got bored and wanted out of the continuum i continued to speak out in favor of self-termination the b-plot of this episode is raffian seven tracking down the board queen and composer jeff russo even repurposed some of the board queen's theme from first contact [Music] and of course she repeats this whole classic line who's in the mood to add a little of their biological and technological distinctiveness to our own on to episode nine where we learn that the board queen is motivated by loneliness which is kind of lame and actually i like the borg better when they were just drones without a queen but that's a pretty old school opinion that i have and i'm willing to admit that i'm wrong in the flashback john luke has a toy spaceship which at first i thought was the classic enterprise in x01 from the show enterprise but ryan britt once again proved me wrong over at dena geek he pointed out that this is actually based off of concept art for an upgraded enterprise that would have appeared in season 5 of that show great catch when agnes is negotiating with the borg queen she sees herself in a deep space nine era starfleet uniform eleanor's hologram is able to move freely about the ship using a hollow emitter like the doctor used in voyager funny enough he got the thing in the episode futures end which also featured time travel to los angeles speaking of voyager we finally get some backstory on seven starfleet shut me down because you were bork janeway went to bat for me threatened to resign gave it up went full ranger bummer that even admiral janeway couldn't pull strings to get seven of commission but you know we saw some of that prejudice in season one with people not regarding the xb's as human anymore this episode also answers a lot of questions like why jean-luc never got into a serious relationship with a woman because he thought that he killed his mom and he didn't want to kill again and he also explains i used to imagine seeing her older which he did in the episode where no one has gone before and that phrase he kept hearing look up is even sadder when you realize that it means that he had to look up to see her dead body so like i theorized all the way back in the very first episode of this show that shattered glass in the opening credits represent a piece of himself that he has lost the episode ends with queen agnes leaving to start a better borg in the delta quadrant which is where the board originated from like we first saw in the episode cue who and now we are finally ready to talk about the finale of picard we're going to explain the easter eggs the ending the con reference and what this means for season two so one interesting thing about this show is how time travel works now i did mention earlier that gainen did not remember meeting picard in the 1900s because the timeline had changed and in this timeline they had never met if picard never captains the enterprise then he never travels back in time to meet gainand and mark twain but in this episode as they begin to correct the timeline events start to line up how they originally played out lachlan picard points out the bullet holes remember family stories of how the chateau got shot up when my ancestors were reoccupying it in the 21st century these are the same bullet holes so what this means is that this crew was always meant to travel back in time and fix the past it's in picard's living memory it's canon but does that mean there was always going to be a timeline where picard was evil well it means that picard was always going to travel from that timeline into the past and that his future would not exist unless he made it so that's awesome i liked it too rios decides to stay behind the inverse of dr taylor's decision to go into the future with wales and voyage home as q is saying goodbye to picard he calls him the french word for my captain that he loved to tease him with in tng when they appear back on the ship we get a brief look at this star chart with lots of names boy i bet it would take a really long time to go through all those names and list every easter egg you're right so i went through every name and listed every easter egg maxia is a system where the ferengi attack picard stargazer gideon is a planet that's overpopulated with beans who don't grow old first appearing in the original series episode mark of gideon inferno prime is a planet where quark was supposed to testify against the orion syndicate all that we know about philippia is this expression when in philibia do as the philippians do vega is one of the earliest human colonies mentioned in a ton of star trek episodes proxima and 61 cygni have been on background charts in tng before arcturus and pyrithia were on star charts back in discovery and all there was name dropped in wrath of khan sigma decronia appeared in the original series episode spock's brain draelax was an early colony where they made relaxion whiskey i've got some relaxing whiskey stashed away if you'd like to join me ben bazaar is where the benzites are from like instant mendo and tng babel was in the episode journey to babel veda and starbase one were mentioned in discovery wolf 359 was the first federation planet attacked by the borg yadalia is the home planet of your mom encounter was in tng now one of the ships in the fleet is the excelsior the third ship with that name and the first was captained by sulu an undiscovered country and the second was in measure of a man then queen agnes has given provisional federation membership to guard a transworld conduit so these are basically artificial wormholes that the borg and other species use to travel through space the ship when entering the conduit is immediately accelerated to an extremely high warp velocity it's like falling into a fast moving river and being swept away by the current then core is approached by none other than wesley crusher who explains what he does now my colleagues and i we dispatch those we call supervisors to help ensure the proper flow of time so way back in the episode where no one has gone before one of these advanced traveler beans meets wesley and he takes a liking to him and he basically says hey i like the cut of your jib you should join me someday wesley is such a person not with music but with the equally lovely intricacies of time energy propulsion and then years later they reunite to stop kardashians from slaughtering a planet of native americans and journeys end that episode also talks a lot about picard's ancestry my father was a strong believer in passing on the traditions and history of her family last time we saw wesley he had returned to starfleet as a junior lieutenant and nemesis but that was obviously just to cover so he could go to riker and troy's wedding i also love to reveal that the watchers are working for the travelers it ties in that weird original series episode with gary seven into the greater trek lore 60 years later they're using that concept to tell great star trek stories now probably the biggest easter egg in the entire show is the paper file that adam picks up after his daughter deletes his work project khan dated june 7 1996. so we did cover this in our star trek recap but khan was the leader of a race of genetic super warriors who conquered large parts of the earth during the eugenics wars when he originally appeared in the episode space seed they claimed those wars happened in the 1990s but earlier this season picard says the history of this time period is wildly incomplete which gave the writers wiggle room to adjust the timeline it looks like the project was originally begun in the 1990s which could explain this historical discrepancy this means that adam sung was the catalyst for the eugenics wars and world war iii which of course obviously led to first contact so in a way he got his wish and he was one of the most important men in history it's also cool because it explains the similarities between the names khan noonian singh and datus creator dr noonian sung it's a very cool way to connect those dots now as for what's going to happen in season three they did film that season at the same time as picard season two so obviously this is all leading into a master plan that's going to wrap things up in a tight nice bow at the end of this season the federation is at peace with the board temporarily and picard seems to have invited love into his life there are rumors that a lot of tng cast members are going to appear in season three such as jordi laforge and commander wharf personally my wish is that all of this spins off into a worf series that michael doran has actually pitched i think that character definitely didn't get resolved at the end of deep space nine and i would love to see him go forward but let me know your thoughts on picard season three down in the comments below tell me what you'd like to see or at me on twitter and if it's your first time here please subscribe and smash that bell for screen crush i'm ryan airy [Music] you
