[Music] hey guys richard holder here where are my 351 cleveland fans you know you are down in australia you guys always say the same thing because i read all of the comments hey richard how come the 302 the 5 liter guys and the 351 windsor guys get all the boost where's booze for a351 cleveland here's your test in this video we're going to find out what happened when we ran a paxton novi 2000 centrifugal supercharger on a modified 351 cleveland this despite the fact that paxton did not offer a novi 2000 supercharger kit for the 351 cleveland but you know how we do it i had one for a five liter four just laying around so we decided to tune it and tweak it a little bit and make it fit on the modified 351 cleveland so let's take a look first at our stock 351 cleveland then our modified version and then find out what happened when we added boost from the novi 2000 that was super cool for a lot of reasons first of all we had a 351 cleveland and it was a 4v cleveland not your run-of-the-mill 2v version it started out actually as a boss 351 which makes it even cooler because as we all know now because we've all watched the videos right that the boss 351 in 1971 was the most powerful production small block at least that i've ever tested now i haven't run the 346 pack from dodge to find out if that is a challenger for the throne but none of the chevy small blocks now the production chevy small blocks made as much power as that boss headed 351 so right now it's kind of it's kind of the high water mark so starting there is always a good start now it's a modified version plus we added boost so it has all kinds of like coolness going to it but that's not to say that there aren't mistakes made along the way or things that i would like to change if i redid this test but let's get right into it so we started out with a 351 cleveland instead of doing the normal windsor like we do and this one actually didn't come from wrecking yard i borrowed this motor from somebody i actually they gave this to me it was a it was a 350 351 cleveland but it was not a boss 351. we actually made it into a box 351 we put pistons and rods and the crankshaft was still good as a matter of fact the rods were still good too all we had to do was change the piston to get the compression ratio right for the boss 351 then we put a reproduction of the boss 351 solid flat tappet cam shaft in the the 351 4v heads these were the non-adjustable valve train head so we did have to make adjustments to make the valve train adjustable with uh guide plates and and rocker studs and we put a unfortunately because they're so hard to come by i did not have the boss 351 aluminum intake because those are like i don't know unicorn teeth or something or something else that's equally equally rare hence teeth or something um so i had to run it with an iron intake manifold but we did upgrade that and i'll show you what's going on and why i didn't get to run the aluminum upgrade intake manifold when we ran superchargers so there's so much to discuss now but we ran the 351 with inch and 7 8 headers and i ran it with a holley 750 instead of the auto light carburetor that came with it so you guys can decide whether or not that's any kind of upgrade and whether it's worth any power but run with this 351 this bot 351 it made 383 horsepower and 391 foot pounds of torque again all this on 91 octane pump gas and no it wouldn't make any more power if we had more octane because the compression ratio is not really that high i think it's about 11 to 1 on these things so we ran this combination but the reason that i like it so much is because we made upgrades to it and that's actually the reason that i ended up installing the the pax and supercharger on it because we made upgrades and we actually had a fairly decent starting point so i thought hey look let's do the same thing that we do to all these you know 302 or 347 or even 351 windsor based motors is that we added boost so let's take a look and see what happened when we made modifications to our n a motor and then we'll get right in and start adding some boost so before adding boost to our cleveland what i did was increase the power output of our na motor because obviously that's always a good idea and we did that by making a few modifications we already had really good cylinder heads on here the factory 4b heads flowed very well these float about 275 cfm when we air flow tested them we did put new valves in them although the valves were standard size what i wanted to do was replace the the twin groove um retainer keepers on the on the original valves so we put a conventional like a single groove valve on there so we could have better retainer options for that so but the valve size was the same we did do a valve job on it we didn't do any porting on the heads which i would like to have done now but as it turns out that wasn't the limiting factor when we were trying to get this done but the first thing we did let's take a look and see on our on our cleveland combination we installed we replaced the iron the big heavy iron intake manifold the 4v factory intake manifold with an rpm air gap and even though the rpm air gap the the outlet side basically the port size of the intake manifold was designed to fit the edelbrock cleveland head which is much smaller than a factory 4v head kind of in between a 2v and a 4v let's say but it's much smaller but that intake manifold still we ran it on the big you know large size or large size cleveland port it still worked and obviously it made power and made power not only at the top but basically everywhere it picked our power up from 382 up to 397 torque was up quite a bit uh up over right at the 400 foot pound mark and as you can see you know big big torque gains kind of in the middle and everywhere else the next thing that we did is install a cam shaft we put a much healthier cam shaft in here you can see it made a big difference this was a comp cam and it was a hydraulic flat tappet cam it was an xc284h which is a 240 246 at 50 and a 584 588 lift now as you can see the we know that the cleveland heads flow really well so having it like a near 600 lift cam not a problem at all with those heads because they continue to flow up past 700 the airflow increases as you go up in valve lift so here we had our 351 cleveland it was 11 to 1. it had a good camshaft and it was now making peak power out closer to 6 500 rpm had the rpm air gap on it so we were making good power 450 horsepower so you're thinking yeah if we could put this thing together and run a reasonable amount of boost we can then make some good power so now let's take a look at it and find out what happens when we installed our paxton nov2 351 cleveland all modified and ready to go here's the stock one here's what it was finally when we added our cam shaft but now it was ready for boost unfortunately there were not when we did this test not readily available kits for 351 cleveland but luckily for me i had a 5 liter ford mustang kit and how you know how far off could it be as it turned out it was not that bad it was fairly close all i had to do to get the the mounting bracket for our 5 liter kit to work on the 351 cleveland is to make an adapter bracket that goes from the mounting plate uh bolt pattern basically of a of a windsor to a cleveland and mostly i had it to spa because the bolt holes i think i think a couple of the bolts was actually lined up but all we had to do was get the spacing right and we were getting the spacing right because we were positioning the vortec basically the spacing with the blower plate to line up with the crank pulley and because i didn't have a cleveland crank pulley all i had was a windsor or five liter forward crank pulley which bolted to the dampener on the 351 cleveland without any problem i just had to position the blower to get it in line and get it to be straight uh in in line with the had the line at the blower pulley and the crank plate which i made an adapter plate and for you guys that are going to be sending me messages do you still have that adapter plate or do you have drawings or anything no i don't i just just make it while i'm there at west tech and this was long ago so i don't i don't have that but it's fairly easy to do in almost anybody that can measure something and get a fairly i it wasn't even very thick um piece of uh you know 6061 aluminum t6 it's really easy to do so that's not a problem so that's what we did and we got the blower kit to line up we also got to run at the time which was fairly new what i call the whenever we ran this as a blow through carbureted application what i was going to do was run the 351 cleveland first with the stock intake manifold and then with the edelbrock intake because i always like to show what something does if you looked at the video that i just posted today if you uh the video on the different intake manifolds for the ls application i like to run the intake manifold test both n a and and supercharged or turbocharged to show what happens that these things still do the same thing under boost so this is what i was trying to do with the cleveland because i hadn't seen that done on a cleveland before unfortunately we weren't able to do that but i started running i started all my runs with the factory iron 4v deal and we installed in in place of the 750 that we'd normally run we installed an h50 or an 850 csu blow through carburetor it's the one we normally use in all these applications so we ran the the 850 and then blowing through that we normally use the csu card bonnet but in this case we ran one from paxton or vortec and i call it their saucer section or the or the jupiter 2 for you guys that don't know what that is do a google search for lost in space and if you haven't ever watched it you need to go watch that old series with will and penny and judy and don but mostly you need to watch it for the robot because there's nothing more awesome than the lost in space robot and i also recommend the netflix version of loss in space because it's also very good but not the movie loss in space although i was very excited about it it just didn't turn out as well but the the original series and the one from netflix both of those are awesome so anyway the our jupiter 2 basically was a card bonnet but it had a diffuser in it the nice thing that i liked about it it was multi-piece so we could put the base on which has to go in a certain position because the way that the base is it's kind of a drop base and has to fit over the carburetor there are little notches to fit over the adjustments for the fuel level on the carburetor so that has to go in the right spot but luckily there are other bolts and clamps kind of like on a turbo that allow the rest of the saucer section the rest of the jupiter 2 to rotate so you can orient this in any direction and while a lot of these carb bonnets are directional and they want to be mounted in a certain way otherwise they throw off the airfield curve this particular one did not because of the diffuser and the filter inside of it which was kind of cool so we could mount this in any direction so what i did the same thing i normally do is grab my boxes of tubing and configure up a discharge tube that was not available obviously for a 351 cleveland so i mounted this to go into the um the jupiter 2 and voila we had boosts going to the our carbureted intake manifold but the downfall of all this and i'll show you what happened when we ran we were able to run about eight pounds on this thing um and as you can see the power curve is climbing very rapidly i think we were near 670 or 675 or so and uh torque was up around 573 foot pounds i did run this on 100 octane race gas because we were talking about an 11 to 1 motor under boost with no inner core so let's talk about a couple of things that i would have changed for this one is that i would have run an intercooler would have been a good idea the other thing that i would have done and the big mistake that i made here because we kept dealing with belt slippage because i only could find a six rib belt at the local auto parts stores and not an eight rib and an eight rib probably would have cured this and allowed me to rub this thing out cleanly to 6 500 rpm and run a little bit more boost i'm sure that this thing would have been this thing would have been definitely over 700 with the pulley ratio that we had and there were a lot of other pulleys because we purposely went mild on this thing because i didn't know how it was going to work and it had it had high compression and we did not have an intercooler on it back then so you know in hindsight we always want to change some of things but everything worked the cleveland worked it made good power n a it made good power under boost and originally i was going to as i said run the two different intake manifolds but because we had so many problems with getting the right belt on the day that i did it and i should have done all of this ahead of time getting the belt that i needed and with the belt slippage i ended up not doing that test so this particular combination where it made this power was actually with the the stock intake manifold so again there was more power to be had i'm sure with the edelbrock intake manifold and ideally this setup would be maybe a little bit lower compression uh ten to one or nine and a half to one and maybe would even have aluminum edelbrock heads on it to match that intake manifold but as you can see 351 cleveland's even with stock heads can make a ton of power and they also like everything else like boost let's get to our conclusions okay guys what did we learn from our paxton novi 2000 with the 351 cleveland we actually learned a few things one always do a lot of prep work this thing would have gone a lot smoother if i would have had the right belt so we wouldn't have belt slippage we could have made even more power and obviously we learned another thing the 351 cleveland has a really good cylinder head so all we had to do was add a good camshaft and add a good intake manifold now i wish i could have run the edelbrock intake manifold under boost because we would have made even more power but since those 351 cleveland heads flow so well you can make a ton of power with them even in stock form now sure the ports are cavernous and they compare more to probably a period correct set of big block chevy heads than they do to any of the other small blocks offered by chevrolet or dodge but the clevelands can make a ton of power even with stock 4v heads all you gotta do is add right right cam and intake manifold and voila away you go and we're making a good power output n a which means one thing when we add boost we can make even more power now we know that the novi 2000 was certainly capable of making a thousand horsepower and since we were already starting near 450 if we had all of the right things we certainly could have made that power output the compression was a little high but if we were to run race gas run an air to water intercooler and then run the right belt that's me we could have certainly turned that paxton up and made big power as it was still 675 horsepower that's still a good amount it would be super fun driving around in a 5 liter mustang or other kind of fast forward i'm richard holder make sure to like share subscribe ring the bell i want to give a shout out to the guys in australia because i know that they're big cleveland fans i'll keep testing
