what's up guys tim halstead here for another episode of pro stock mania continues on with the show and tell now here's the part that's going to blow you away i'm going to reveal to you something that's probably no one's ever seen or at least they've seen it but they didn't know what it was or they didn't pay attention to it because i've seen this in the last two months on two occasions so what i'm going to kind of present to you is a little bit of information on why i think that clinton had a little bit of advantage over the other guys that he raced against whether it was chevy or the mopar guys or you know amc with dick maskin those guys and there's a lot more i just don't know them all because i'm just starting to get into this i kind of got hooked on this pro stock and i've been reading about a lot and then i started to pick up some pictures and started looking and study things and it's like wow i noticed something that no one's ever talked about so i kind of give you a little bit of preview of what's going to be coming on i've been talking with darren morgan you know him and i have been buddies for a long time he's been helping me with all kinds of things with engine building you know from camshafts to setting up heads to engines compression ratio the list goes on so he i got to give him a shout out for that i also been talking with tricky tristan trickus from australia from trick and man sweater now he's a great guy he's got some great stories we've been talking on skype what i want to do is present to you in another episode darren wants to come on and talk about pro stock cylinder heads from the mid 70s and what his experiences with him tricky wants to talk to you guys about cleveland and cleveland oiling and that people sometimes overthink that so we're going to talk about that maybe some of his cylinder head work that he's done if you remember and you can look back on some of the videos i may put it on here at the end where he had some chi heads and tested them from chi that had a t-rex program where they cnc ported him and did the horsepowers on a 451 windsor and then his own reporting that he did on the set of heads you know he he does design and make his own cylinder heads i don't know if he still does but he did there's it's amazing when you hear these guys talk just blows me away but the thing about clinton that that i'm fascinated about is just his win record you know and people have been saying about the big black era that he was using nitrous all that i don't want to get into that i want to stick right now to the small block era you know i may move on to that later and but i want to concentrate today and try to make this a short video on why he was so fast and the secret is the cylinder heads now he may have had the cylinder heads done by somebody else where they cut and put the high port on when it comes to porting though i think he did his own work and you'll see what i mean remember back in the day there was no aftermarket you didn't call up jegs and get a set of cylinder heads or you know dart and get a set of cylinder heads or proline they weren't out there they weren't aluminum heads everyone used cast iron and the only way to modify them was welding and they just don't braise them up they did do the ports they braised them but when it comes to the combustion chamber with the heat they were welded cast iron and that's what i found out it's crazy when you're going to see this let's talk about quick about the stock combustion chamber here's a i'll put a picture you'll see it right now but here's the shape of the combustion chamber classic cleveland combustion chamber they normally are about 62 cc's now one of the things i learned from morgan and you probably already know this one of the best ways to increase your horsepower is to increase the squish that's the flat top of the piston coming up against the combustion chamber and you reduce that volume in the combustion chamber you're going to make more power you're going to increase the compression ratio now the thing that i found out from darren morgan and i'll tell you what he told me with the combustion chamber the key and what you want is a large ball of air fuel molecules to be right at the area of the spark plug when it ignites you don't want it all around the combustion chamber you want it centered around there and if you look at today's combustion chambers that's what their objective is and that's what bob glidden was doing what 1975 46 years ago he was already doing that he was 20 years ahead of his time because i didn't notice those combustion chambers and you guys can chime in because i don't know this is just from my ford experience until probably like the yates heads okay now i've got i showed you the c3 heads i had before let me show you quick by the way here's a piston here this is what happens when you lose a drop in exhaust valve at 7 800 that happened to me but they're talking about the quench area the flat part of the pistons coming up against the combustion chamber now these are the c3 heads i got they've been modified just take a look at that combustion chamber because this is originally looked like this this is the stock cleveland combustion chamber they called it a poly angle or semi-hemi i don't know how they came up with that doesn't really look like that to me but what they did here and this is from the 80s this cylinder head here which originally looked like that they welded this all up in this area to push that ball of air fuel molecules into that spark plug area now the newer heads and i'm going to show you that they had this area raised up too but they were already doing this in the 80s and bob glidden was doing this in the 70s so you see how they've been modified with welding now there may be a debate on this channel about this but to me the number one thing that's going to make horsepower engine is the heads you know the cam's not going to do it the cam helps and is the brain so to speak but it's the heads if they don't have the right combustion chamber shape they don't have the right port shape if they don't have the right velocity that air fuel mixture is not going to move efficiently things can fall out of place in regards to the molecules you don't get a good mixture distribution you end up with problems less horsepower detonation so that's the key is that head now look at these these are modern day cylinder heads and when i mean modern day i'm talking just for example here's a set these are set of afd heads that i had darren port these are flown close to 400 cfm but look at this look at the shape you see what i'm saying it's almost like a heart shape they call it too so if anybody knows a technical name drop it on the channel here's a set of blue thunder 3.6 the same thing here modern combustion chamber you see it all they want to do is get that air fuel mixture to that spark plug area compress it and push it over that's what these ridges here are pushing over the same thing it keeps it that tight area the quench for the most efficient burn when you increase quench you decrease the burn rate so you're burning everything it's not going out the exhaust port unburned now here's the part that you're gonna be blown away by now like i said what i'm gonna show you now is why he was so fast and i've seen on the internet like i said a couple times but no one's noticed it if you see this picture now right up here there he is in his shop great picture i have a bunch of pictures and these are from the peterson archives so they probably copyrighted but i'm not trying to make anything off them this is for educational purposes i'm saying that so they don't youtube doesn't ding me for that but look at that you see that shop he's happy he looks good the shop kind of looks cool but what i did was i looked at that and what that is is a heater to heat cylinder heads or any part really but what he does is put cylinder heads in there you can see the propane heater back there because in order to weld cast iron it needs to be heated so he heated it now watch this i'm going to zoom in and i'm going to show you this combustion chamber no one's seen this or no one's talked about it until now and this is what's going to make this crazy is because he was a man ahead of his time check this out look at that combustion chamber okay this should be a good zoomed in pitcher look at the shape of that combustion chamber it looks like this here now this part here is more round that part where the spark plug is almost looks a little more like this one this cylinder head and i showed you that a couple minutes ago more rounded he didn't actually get to that point or maybe he didn't i don't know where it has actually bulged out so to speak so it can push that air fuel mixture together and keep it centered in that area where the spark plug is so he had this area raised and these heads here they welded them up and raised it i don't know who thought this up if you guys know put it on there i can tell you this is what darren told me this is off the side is that dick maskin is the original guy that made the first sheet metal intake that's just some trivia there anybody got anything to say about it post it on the channel we'll get some conversation going so he was already making this shape of the combustion chamber in 74 or 75 when this picture was taken you know whether that increased his horsepower 10 horsepower 20 i don't know what the actual amount was so it's pretty amazing that he was doing this at that time and that's what amazes me about him he was like you know they called him mad dog you know i told you that before and that's what morgan told me because that guy was a worker he never stopped he would sit in the shop for a week at a time five days someone commented on this channel and use clay and model the ports and then flow them and see how they change whether the air fuel or excuse me the velocity change i don't know if you had a pivot tube and the airflow didn't like it put more clay change things around and would work on it constantly until he got the best numbers and that's probably why he had made the most power i've talked to darren morgan the other day and he's going to help me with the track boss i think we're going to use those c302b heads i have it's sitting down on the floor over there and i want to send them these pro stock heads and have them look at them i don't want to change anything with them unless it's something that's way off because i want to see what that thing made for power and i can't believe you guys are into this as much as i am and that's what blows me away you know because no one's doing this pro stock it's 50 years old you know and i and i'm into it and i want to bring it to life for you because i hear cleveland's make power so i'm asking you to stay tuned hit that picture of my car because that's where the subscribe button is make that bell ring because now we have 3 000 subscribers 3 000 people that are into this pro stock scene and i want to bring it to you live as i develop this and as i work on these things and get them done i just want to give a shout out to my daughters happy halloween i'm wearing my halloween shirt with a skull on it they drew these pictures my daughter izzy drew this one for the youtube symbol and then my other daughter drew this one it was a picture of flowers and stuff at the yard and i want to get him involved with building motors and doing this you know my wife was saying maybe they'll be driving the race car hey i'd like to see him do it and i appreciate everybody tuning in and like i said subscribe we're going to build this cleveland we're going to put some pro stock parts together we're going to see what we can do you know i've been talking to guys about maybe getting a maverick or a fairmont um doug schmidt is doing a fair amount he said i could put this cleveland that we build in that and and test it i might do that i don't know i i i just gotta things are gonna open the way they're gonna open in regards to doors and opportunities and that's what i'm rolling with and now you know why bob glidden was ahead of his time in the pro stock era so give me some likes let's get this video viral stay tuned you
